MISSION
To promote the welfare of children and adults
with intellectual and/or developmental disabili-
ties (and their families) by providing opportuni-
ties for education, growth and employment in a
normalized setting, in order to facilitate each
individual’s achievement to their maximum
potential.
Words from the Executive Director BLYTHE BAUGHMAN: DEDICATED & ACCOMPLISHED
BY SHAWN CARROLL
Blythe Baughman recently en-
tered into a well-earned retire-
ment after 26 years with New
Perceptions. The work ethic
Blythe learned long ago helped
her shine in her career.
Blythe grew up on a farm in Minnesota. She
was the eldest of seven children and once told
me “she was carrying babies on her hip while
she was a baby herself.” While working on the
farm she learned the requirements of good,
hard labor. The cows needed milking every
day. The horses’ stalls needed to be mucked,
with fresh straw for their beds. I won’t talk
about the chicken and pigs that fed their family
and how they ended up on the kitchen table.
This tremendous work ethic carried through to
her career.
Although Blythe held a degree in economics,
she was fascinated and delighted by the strides
she saw in children’s development. At New Per-
ceptions, she embraced change: learning new
ideas and ways of helping children sparked an
interest in her heart and mind. She was a mod-
el employee: arriving at work before dawn,
completing her paperwork, holding a large
caseload, and excelling at her interactions with
children and their families.
In 1994, Blythe began an Early Childhood De-
velopmental Evaluation team to help families
better understand their child’s development.
And the year after, she became a Primary Ser-
vice Coordinator, the position she retired in 20
years later.
Blythe is a true professional with the child and
family’s interest foremost in her heart. Thank
you, Blythe, for so graciously serving children
and New Perceptions. Enjoy your retirement!

Bridging the Gap Program Helps Transition Children Into the School Year
BY MARY BOLGER
New Perceptions was pleased to offer another exciting and successful
year of the Bridging the Gap Summer Program. This was our seventh
year offering a therapeutic group program for children ages 3-5 years
who may be behind in their development in one or all of the areas for
Occupational, Physical or Speech Therapy needs. These children may
have received services through First Steps Early Intervention Program
or through public preschool and would not be eligible to continue ser-
vices during the summer.
When we learned that many families desired to continue therapies for
their children, we decided to design a program to “bridge the gap” for
therapeutic intervention, social communication, and basic preschool-
type routines. This type of setting facilitated the children to not lose
skills over the summer and to continue to progress in all areas of de-
velopment. Due to the success and demand of the program, we began
to offer the program on-campus at New Perceptions in 2014.
Some of the topics covered during the course of the program included:
Becoming more aware of their bodies in relationship to
other friends
Learning to "trade" or "exchange" a toy with a friend
Developing the social skills needed to stop, watch and
listen to the words, phrases and gestures
Being able to sit and wait for friends to complete an ac-
tivity or sit, listen, and respond as a book is read
Using motor skills to move through obstacle courses
requiring strength, balance, and motor planning
Introducing self-help skills and feeding as children ob-
serve and learn from positive reinforcement
Following routines through visual, tactile and verbal
cues
Using language and sequencing when engaging in free play and structured fine motor projects
that facilitate preschool readiness
This year’s eight-week summer program was
successfully completed by 19 children, with
each child improving their scores in at least one
area of development. Therapists and volunteers
have been so privileged to work with each child;
not only did they learn new skills, but we also
continue to learn from them!
