The business school at the Université Catholique de Lyon

ESDES Ecole de managementESDES is an international business school founded in 1987.Highly reputed in France as a leading institution of highereducation, ESDES has also won international recognition forthe quality of its teaching and research. ESDES has achieved the highest level of accreditation by theFrench Ministry Education. This means that out of a total of230 business schools in France, ESDES is one of the 89whose degree carries the ministry’s ‘visa’ of approval. Ofthese only 42 are able to add the ministry’s quality label of‘grade de master’ to the degrees they award. ESDES is also one of only 37 business schools who aremembers of the prestigious association of business and en-gineering schools known as the ‘Conférence des GrandesEcoles’ (CGE). Not all business schools in France accept students directlyafter high school. ESDES belongs to a highly select group ofonly five business schools in the whole of France which doso, which use the ‘grade de master’ label and which aremembers of the CGE.

The school places great emphasis on the students’ develop-

ment and it gives them access to academics who are experts

in their field, whilst providing an integrative environment that is

extremely conducive to learning.Throughout the five years of the “Programme Grande École”,students will be faced with academic and practical challengesto develop their knowledge and the competencies necessaryfor their professional live. The Université Catholique de LyonThe Université Catholique de Lyon (UCLy) was founded in1875 and today welcomes 7400 students of every nationality.Since its creation it has constantly developed new coursesand areas of research to respond to the changing needs ofbusiness and society. Each course prepares the students fora career in their field of study. French Higher Education SystemFollowing recent reforms in the French higher education system, there are now three distinct parts or L-M-D (licence-master's-doctorate) as the system is popularly called. To beawarded a Licence (Bachelor’s degree), a student must earn180 credits in six semesters, and for a Master's degree thestudents must earn 120 credits in four semesters after theLicence.

ESDES International DevelopmentESDES opens its doors to international students through a re-puted exchange program that has adopted the EuropeanCredit Transfer System (ECTS) and offers a wide variety ofsubjects to students from across the world. The purpose ofthese programs is to enable international students to benefitfrom ESDES’ core competencies and experience in businessand management.

International students are attracted to ESDES for its diverseand flexible programs that can be easily integrated into theircurrent undergraduate programs. The ESDES experience isan extremely affordable educational opportunity proposinghigh quality academic programs and opportunities, with agreat location and state of the art facilities.

International Business Program TeamThe IBP team provides a full range of support services to in-ternational students including an intensive and comprehen-sive orientation program to help students blend into the localstudent life; an opportunity to meet key administrators; adviceon housing, internships, external scholarships, employmentrequests, foreign exchange issues, social security issues andcultural adjustment.

International ExchangeTeamESDES provides comprehensive support for its students whospend a semester in a partner university. The International Ex-change team manages the students’ applications and depar-tures to their university of choice and ensures continuedcommunication and support for the students throughout thesemester.

Lyon: a great location2nd largest urban site on the UNESCO World Heritage list,after Prague.2,000 years of history: its Gallo-Roman heritage, its Italian architecture and cosmopolitan population testify to the city'sopenness to multiple influences.A multitude of landscapes, and leisure activities: Lyon Rhône-Alpes is among the top 5 tourist destinations in Europe.The cuisine is a source of great pride: Lyon is home to 22 ofthe best restaurants in France, according to the MichelinGuide.

Excellent travel connections to other major European business centers and destinations. Lyon is less than two hours away by car from the French Alps,and three-hour from the Mediterranean Sea. Support for studentsESDES facilitiesESDES offers students a wide range of state of the art facili-ties to accompany their studies including WIFI access, fivefully equipped amphitheatres, a comprehensive multi-media library and an onsite refectory.

AccommodationThere are various accommodation options available to international students, including living with a French family,sharing an apartment with French students, or staying in astudent Residence Hall which is situated in close proximity tothe ESDES buildings. Students who are studying at ESDESfor at least one semester can benefit from government hou-sing subsidies to off-set the cost of housing.

ActivitiesMany activities are on offer during your stay: a city tour, skiweek, international dinners, wine and cheese tasting, trips to Paris, the Loire Valley, Museum visits, Festivals,Sports, but the list is endless.

TransportLyon has an excellent public transport system both within thecity centre and to and from neighboring regions. Its two maintrain stations also provide TGV access from across Franceand neighboring European capitals. Within the city centrestudents can make use of the subway system, the tram, thepublic bus service and the ‘Velo’V’ public bike service, whichstudents have access to through their transportation cards.

Eating out and aboutESDES is located in the 2nd district and the heart Lyon whichhas a wide range of bistros and restaurants proposing worldever wide gastronomy at reasonable prices to students. Theschool is on the Place Carnot and next to the Rue VictorHugo, a pedestrian shopping street which has many cafés inaddition to shops. Students can also benefit from the school’scafeteria which offers a wide selection of hot and cold mealsand take-away snacks, as well as a pleasant seating area inthe school’s atrium.

Programstructure The first two semesters concerncore study areas coveringinternational business func-tions and strategies. The thirdsemester is dedicated to thedissertation which has to bewritten entirely in English. Stu-dents can choose their owndissertation topic. Professorsmay also suggest topics whichare in their domain of expertise.

LanguageThe program is taught inEnglish. Students can choose a French language course as an elective module. Non nativespeakers must provide evi-dence of English language pro-ficiency, for example TOEFLscores or a letter of recom-mendation from an Englishteacher.

ClassesIn the European system, a full-time student takes 30 credithours (ECTS) per semester. Theoverall program is thus worth 90ECTS. All MIBA students haveto take all of the compulsorycore courses plus two electivecourses each semester. Theelective courses bring a highvalue-added format to the core

courses by helping students toput into perspective the busi-ness skills and knowledge gai-ned in the program.

FeesProgram fees are: 7,850 eurospayable in 2 installments. Livingexpenses are not included inthese fees.

MIBAacademic staffQualified and experienced academic staff of ESDESSchool of Management,along with professors fromNorth American and Europeanuniversities and also businessprofessionals will bring theirexperience and knowledge tothis Master.

The program is a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experiencesprovided by academics and professionals.It aims to give students the capability of evaluating the complexity of the internationalbusiness arena by providing them with analytical tools for key decision-making pro-cesses. Students will also develop their communication, leadership and teamwork skills.Interactive learning methods are used in the program such as business simulation,conferences on international business issues or storytelling by corporate leaders abouttheir successful export or internationalization projects.

International Business Program

The International Business Program is an exchange program designed for students whoare enrolled at ESDES partner institutions in their home countries. Classes are offered pri-marily in business in the areas of Finance, Marketing, Law and Strategy. Classes are avai-lable at both the Bachelor’s and Master’s level. Additional courses are offered innon-business areas such as the European Union, Geopolitics and Art & Architecture. Thelanguage of instruction is in English, although students have the option of taking some bu-siness classes in French every semester if their French is good enough. Students are stron-gly encouraged to take a French Language class, although it is not mandatory. There areclasses in French for students at every level, including for those students who have neverhad French before or for those students who are already bilingual.

Length of programStudents have the possibility ofstudying in the InternationalBusiness Program for one ortwo semesters.

Candidate profileStudents from our partner institutions should:

have completed at leastone year of university studies at their home institutions,be in good academic standing,have at least a B2 or C1level of English.

Students from other institutionsmay apply to study as freemo-vers.

Class creditEach class is worth a certainnumber of ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer Sys-tem), enabling students to obtain both credits and gradesin order to satisfy the require-

ments of their home institu-tions. In general, in the Euro-pean system, a full-timestudent takes 30 credit hours(ECTS) per semester. It is pos-sible to take a few extra creditsbut students usually find thatthey need time to adjust andexplore their new environment.

FeesThe program is free of chargeto students who are studyingunder an exchange agreementwith their home institutions.Students wishing to study inthe IBP exchange program, butwhose home institutions do nothave an exchange agreementwith ESDES, may apply tostudy at ESDES as fee-payingstudents.

French social securityIt is mandatory for non-Euro-pean students to purchase theFrench social security which isa French health-care coverage,provided under the social se-

curity system. Students will beexpected to pay ��207* for theFrench Social Security beforearrival.

DiplomaStudents receive transfercredits at their home institu-tions for coursework which issuccessfully completed atESDES. A certificate of studiesis awarded attesting to the stu-dent’s participation in the IBPprogram.

Student lifeIn addition to the challengingacademic courses which stu-dents take, there is also a widerange of social activities andtrips that students can partakein. While there are many thingsto do both at the Universityand in Lyon, ski weekends inthe Alps, dinner with a Frenchfamily and wine tasting in theBeaujolais are very popular.Students can also enjoy a widerange of social events whichare organized by the IBP Club.

Important Dates

Applications due: Fall semester (September-December): May 15th

Registration

Registration occurs several days prior to Orientation. During this time, students will meet with an ad-visor to finalize their class choices, take a French placement test, obtain their student ID card and otherimportant details. Registration is open several days prior to Orientation and is done on an individualbasis. Students are asked to send the required documents prior to arrival, so that the Registration pro-cess is speedy. Both Registration and Orientation are mandatory.

Orientation

Students receive their final schedules at Orientation. They also have the opportunity to tour the cam-pus, sign up for trips and other activities, and learn about important administrative areas such as pre-paring for their appointment at the Immigration Office, setting up a bank account, using publictransportation, applying for Housing subsidies, etc...

Housing Check-in

Students who have been assigned housing by the Université Catholique’s Service Logement (hou-sing desk) may go directly to their residence halls or families in Lyon in order to obtain the keys andsettle in. In most cases housing check-in is between 9:00 - 4:00 on weekdays. Students who arriveon weekends will generally not be admitted to their residences until Monday. Therefore, it is strongly re-commended that students arrive during the week unless they prefer to stay in a hotel.

Candidate profile“Doing Business in and with theE.U” Summer School programis open to undergraduate andgraduate students in busi-ness, management, econo-mics, finance or marketingcoming from ESDES partnerand non partner universities.

LanguageThe program is taught in En-glish. Students can chose aFrench language course as anelective module. Non native speakers must pro-vide evidence of English lan-guage proficiency, for exampleTOEFL scores or a letter of re-commendation from an Englishteacher.

ClassesStudents must do all three mo-dules of Finance or Marketing,and choose elective modules.

Accommodationand FeesThe Summer School costs1,900 euros per student. It in-cludes tuition, accommodationand cultural activities. The stu-dent residence is situated inthe old town, a few minuteswalking distance from the bu-siness school.

Credit transfer(ECTS : European CreditTransfer System)Participants must study eitherthree modules in finance orthree modules in marketing (6ECTS credits), together withelectives (3 ECTS).The overall program is thusworth 9 ECTS, which is equi-valent to about 4 credits in theAmerican system.

Student lifeThis program will also offermany social and cultural activi-ties. This will be a great oppor-tunity for international studentsto get to know each other, aswell as to discover the life andculture of Lyon, a UNESCOWorld Heritage city. Activitiessuch as city bus tour, visit ofthe Lumière museum, the in-ventors of the cinema or thetasting of the French cuisinewill be organized and coordi-nated by the ESDES School ofManagement.

An Ideal Mix of Management Studies, French Culture and Leisure ActivitiesThis is a four-week program for undergraduate students in finance or marketing. It is agreat way to give a real international dimension to your studies.You will join a group of students from all over the world who have come to the ESDESSchool of Management to enjoy an ideal mix of studies, culture and leisure. Professorsof different nationalities will set out their business experience of the E.U.
