UTS MusED program
The International Research Centre for Youth Futures at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Australia Piano Quartet (APQ), Ensemble in Residence, are collaborating to present the inaugural UTS MusED program based on new Australian repertoire. The Resource Kit, Premiere Concert at Sydney Opera House and series of practical educational workshops have been developed by highly-skilled, experienced music educators Robyn Staveley, Peta Harper, APQ and composers.
Robyn Staveley, editor of the MusEd kit and program, and Senior Lecturer at UTS, is widely known as a music educator and writer. She has
more than 40 years experience teaching in schools, for professional organisations, conferences, teacher training and workshops, both in
Australia and internationally. Robyn’s current activities involve research in cognitive neuroscience and its impact on music pedagogy.
Peta Harper, presenter and writer, has been teaching Secondary Music for more than twenty years, has degrees in Music and Education, and completed
post-graduate studies in Austria. She has presented professional development teacher training courses, workshops, and conference presentations nation wide, as well as written education materials for the Sydney Symphony and Musica Viva Education programs. Having been a marker and judge for performance and written components of HSC Music, Peta is highly experienced and well-respected in the field.
Peta and Robyn have worked together on the UTS MusEd program that combines their collective practice, experience, creativity and research into music learning.

MusED RESOURCE KIT
The UTS MusEd Resource Kit is designed to support students and teachers to achieve maximum results in composition, musicology, aural and performance practice via comprehensive activities as part of the study of HSC Music Courses 1, 2 & Extension. Content also applicable to Stage 5 Music.
The Resource Kit assists schools to meet the syllabus requirements in a practice-based and fully-integrated way, featuring: key lesson plans,
repertoire, video tutorials and techniques in performances, listening and composition.
PREMIERE CONCERT at S ydne y Opera House
The highly acclaimed Australia Piano Quartet (APQ) will perform new commissioned works by Australian composer Ross Edwards together with vibrant works by Elena Kats-Chernin, Lachlan Skipworth and Jack Symonds. Students can engage in direct and personal dialogue with APQ and some composers in the intimate Utzon Room.

TEACHER WORKSHOP
UTS MusED: HSC Australian Music Education (Music 1, Music 2, Music Extension)
Our day will be spent exploring and developing deep understandings of the repertoire, leading to conceptual development and experimentation with composition techniques.
Teacher Workshops will include:
Experiencing and performing activities from the teaching resource based upon the APQ repertoire for study
APQ performing excerpts of the musical works
Discussion about the pedagogical reasoning behind the activities
The opportunity to discuss with APQ performance practise considerations for development of performance and composition skills
Introducing and exploring new Australian repertoire
Activities that engender personal engagement through playing, improvising and composing
An active, multimodal, creative approach, resulting in deep, personal engagement with the repertoire, concepts and composition ideas.

STUDENT WORKSHOP
UTS MusED: HSC Australian Music Education
(Music 1, Music 2, Music Extension)
Students and their teachers will receive 10 hours over the two-day practical workshops taught by Music Educator Peta Harper with possible visits from composers.
Student Workshops will include:
Experiencing and performing activities from the teaching resource based upon the APQ repertoire for study
The opportunity to work with students from other schools, providing opportunities to expand instrumental combinations and share and expand a wealth of ideas
APQ performing excerpts of the musical works
APQ to perform some of the student’s composition ideas
The opportunity to discuss with APQ performance practise considerations for development of performance and composition skills
In-depth analysis of the works through practical activities.
Developing an understanding of the repertoire through experimenting, exploring, improvising and composing with key ideas of the repertoire
Playing together, developing conceptual and technical knowledge
Preparation for HSC Music through interaction with the Australia Piano Quartet to further develop composition and performance skills.
