Cover Letter !! Throughout my semester at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, I took over one large project and a small, occasional assignment. During my first few weeks at the Cowgirl, I was given the task of researching potential Hall of Fame nominees and filling out Nomination Forms. If someone wishes to nominate a woman for induction into the Cowgirl’s hall of fame, they must fill out a nomination form and submit it to the museum. There are some forms, however, that come in with little material or information about the potential nominee, but that the Cowgirl sees as inspiring and worthy. After the right people reviewed these forms, I was given the insufficient forms to continue research on the nominee and find more materials pertaining to her impacts on the west. In addition to working on the nomination forms that had been submitted by outside parties, I was also put in charge of starting and completing nomination forms for women that were chosen as nominees by the Cowgirl. Filling out these forms required me to do research on each woman, through the internet, and finding articles, stories, ancestry, photographs, and videos of what the nominees did to earn an induction. After I completed a handful of nomination forms, I was assigned a larger project that I worked on for the rest of my time at the Cowgirl. On their website, the Hall of Fame has a biography written for each member. Some of these biographies were written five to ten years ago, so my job was to go through, re-research the inductees, and rewrite the biographies with more updated and adequate information. Similar to the smaller project of filling out nomination forms, this larger project required me to do various types of research on each woman. Although I had the biographies that were already on the website, many of them were poorly written, and contained information that was very vague. By re-researching and re-writing these biographies, I am able to present the reader with more accurate and up-to-date information about the hall of famers. During my time at the cowgirl, I did a lot of research. As an undergraduate student about to attend graduate school, this research will help me in so many ways. If I were to give one piece of advice for future interns at the Cowgirl, I would advise them to pay attention to detail while during research. Many of the women who were inducted into the Hall of Fame made an influential and well-known impact on the west and information about them was plentiful. Yet, there were a handful of inductees that were not very famous, and therefore research became more complicated. It is important to pay attention to detail because, whether there is an abundance of information or a lack thereof, it is important that visitors (to the museum or the website) know exactly why and how these cowgirls changed the world’s perception of the west.

The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is a museum that focuses on the women who have impacted the West. Their mission statement concludes that “The National Cowgirl and Hall of Fame honors and celebrates women, past and present, whose lives exemplify courage, resilience, and independence that helped shape the American West, and fosters an appreciation of the ideals and spirit of self-reliance they inspire.” The staff at the Cowgirl strongly upholds this mission statement and emphasizes the important roles that women – featured throughout the museum and in the Hall of Fame – have fulfilled. As an intern at the Cowgirl, I had two projects that demanded a variety of tasks and skills. My first project was the completion of multiple nomination forms for women who wish to be inducted into the hall of fame. In order to do this project, I had to go into the internship with an experience in research. Since I was only able to pull information from online sources, I especially had to know what defined a website or article as a credible source. The Cowgirl provided me with usernames and passwords to important sites that required membership or payment. My second, and bigger, project was to rewrite the biographies of the women who have been inducted into the hall of fame. The original biographies were already available online, but my responsibility was re-research and rewrite each biography. This task was very important because I had to make sure that the new biographies were current and as specific as possible. Although I did take some of the information that was already in the previous biography, I had to completely rewrite a handful of them. Given that these biographies are going to be online, they had to be short and as specific as possible. Rewriting the biographies took a lot of time and effort, as well as detailed research, which requires a great deal of patience. Here is a list of typical tasks you might be asked to complete as an intern at the Cowgirl: - Research (and plenty of it) - Compilation of research findings - Including articles, photographs, and videos - Start – and completion – of nomination forms As an intern, you will be required to have the following skills: - Excellent writing and grammar - Research (online) - Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel - Determine accurate sources from inaccurate sources - Common knowledge about the internet As an intern, my experience at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame was one of delight and enjoyment. The staff always welcomed me and I liked the fact that I was able to dress in casual business attire. The atmosphere at the Cowgirl is laid back, yet every staff member gets the job done. I would recommend this internship to any student who is eager to learn about the cowgirl industry, and who wants to build on multiple areas of expertise.

LINDY BURCH (1997)

Lindy holds the distinction of being the first woman to win the NCHA Futurity, and she set a record score while doing it. She was also the first female president of the NCHA. Lindy was raised riding horses but did not see her first cutting event until she was fourteen. Now a respected horse trainer and cutting champion, she promotes cutting internationally through clinics and competitions.

Lindy Burch was raised in Chino, California and grew up riding horses. In her teenage years she competed in gymkhana events and worked with a local trainer to learn the mechanics of cutting horses in rodeo competitions. Today, she is considered to be one of the cutting horse industry’s top all-time trainers, owners, and riders. In 1979, Lindy became the first woman to claim the title of NCHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion and, to this day, she remains the only woman to have earned that distinction. Another first came in 1995, when she became the first rider in history to win all 4 go-rounds of the NCHA Open World Finals. Five years later, Lindy was the 1st woman to win the NCHA Open World Championship and was also elected president of the National Cutting Horse Association. Today, she is ranked among cutting’s All-Time leading money earners and chairs the NCHA Horse and Cattle Welfare Task Force.

BERNICE DEAN (1986)

Bernice was one of the most versatile Wild West and rodeo performers. Her act included singing and dancing, trick riding, trick shooting, knife throwing, tricks with Mexican maguey ropes and bull whips, juggling, and a balancing trick on the rolling globe. She and her husband worked as an exhibition team for 45 years in every state and thirteen countries. Today, Helen carries on her family’s legacy as president of the Robert J. Kleberg and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation, which helps to fund countless projects in Texas and across the country, mostly in the areas of biomedical research, health services, higher education, and veterinary and wildlife projects.

WANDA HARPER BUSH (1978)

The 150-year-old Harper Ranch is home for Wanda. Here, like her ancestors, she raises livestock and trains horses. Instrumental in the organization of the GRA, Wanda has been one of its most awarded champions, winning 33 World Championships, including three All-Around titles. After curtailing her rodeo activities, Wanda turned to raising horses and established herself as one of the premier horse trainers, garnering praise for both her horse skills and training clinics.
