Introducing Airbus Group NV: More than just a new nameDisappearance of ‘too long and confusing’ EADS brand heralds new era

The name European Aeronauti-cal Defence & Space Co (EADS) became a thing of the past ear-lier this month when the group started trading under the Airbus Group NV moniker, 13 years after the company was formed follow-ing the merger of aerospace com-anies in France, Germany, the UK and Spain.

The new name will help to rejuvenate the image of the group: EADS was branded by The Wall Street Journal as one of the business world’s “most unaerodynamic” names, and Rainer Ohler, head of Air-bus Group communications, commented that it was “always much too long and confusing for effective marketing”.

Airbus Group NV will now com-prise three divisions: Airbus, manufacturer of commercial airliners; Airbus Defense and Space, created through the amal-gamation of existing defence and space businesses, and Airbus Helicopters, formerly Eurocop-ter, a manufacturer of civil and military helicopters.

The European Aviation Safety Agency said that air travel has nev-er been safer, with worldwide fatal accidents involving large passenger jets lower last year than in any other year in the past decade. It said that there were 17 accidents in 2013, compared to a yearly average of 27, and fatalities also plummeted to 224 worldwide, compared to a yearly average of 703 between 2003 and 2012. There were also no fatal accidents involving large commercial aircraft in European Union skies, where airlines carried out some 6m commercial flights transporting 800m passengers.

Brazil World Cup air chaosBrazilian president Dilma Rousseff is considering a presidential decree to open more air routes to foreign airlines in June and July, as some 600,000 soccer fans are expected to travel to the country for the 2014 Fifa World Cup. The decree would be aimed at smoothing trav-el between the 12 host cities and would help combat “abusive’ air fares. When it first entered service, the A340 opened true long-haul operations, expanding the Airbus wide-body family. The A330 and A340 have since become the best-selling wide-body family of all time.In an ever-changing world some flag carriers like to keep their fleet age very low, it’s natural that a proportion of their aircraft will move to the used aircraft market, the A340 is no exception. The A340 Family of three variants, the A340-300, -500 and -600, is now available at very competitive lease rates which makes them economically affordable prospects for carriers looking at long-haul opportunities, especially as they await delivery of new-generation aircraft, such as the A350 XWB.

A340 appeal The A340 appeal is based on its availability, commonality with other Airbus types, its performance as well as its excellent payload accommodation. Now that older B747-400s are well into their retirement phase, the availability of significantly younger A340-600s equipped with modern avionics, make them the smart interim upgrade. The four-engined A340 is not subject to “Extended-range Twin-engine Operations” (ETOPS). Operators can fly the most direct routes and operate efficiently from ‘hot and high’ airports, potentially off-limits to other aircraft. Furthermore, the A340 fits seamlessly alongside other Airbus aircraft, especially the twin-engined A330, with which it shares the same modern technology, such as the cockpit, fly-by-wire architecture and systems. The A340 cabin can comfortably accommodate from 280 to 440 passengers depending on the model. Most A340s available in the market today are fitted with full Audio-Video-On-Demand (AVOD) IFE system in all classes, which is today’s standard. Moreover, when it comes to making the most of cargo revenue opportunities, the A340 can carry as much cargo as direct competitors if not more, with 18 to 25 tonnes of revenue earning cargo capacity.

The bottom lineSo, has the A340 performed as intended by its designers? The answer is definitely ‘yes’ because today’s A340 is a mature product delivering high reliability. With its very competitive ownership costs, its passenger and cargo revenues, its availability and its comfortable cabin, the A340 can be considered an efficient long-haul solution in today’s market.

AIRCRAFT & ENGINE NEWS A350 XWB in Bolivia for high altitude testing

The A350 XWB development aircraft, MSN3, is in Bolivia where it will perform a series of tests at the high altitude airfields of Cochabamba and La Paz. Cochabamba is around 8,300 feet above sea level, and La Paz is one of the world’s highest airports at 13,300 feet. Operations at such high altitude airfields are particularly demanding on aircraft en-gines, Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and systems. The aim of these trials is to demonstrate and validate the full functionality of engines, systems, materials as well as to assess the overall aircraft behaviour under these extreme conditions. A number of take-offs with all engines operating and with simulated engine failures are being performed at each of the airfields to collect data on engine operating characteristics and validate the aircraft take-off performance. The autopilot behaviour will also be evaluated during automatic landings and go-arounds. Since the A350 XWB’s first flight with MSN1 on June 14th 2013, over 800 flight test hours have been performed in close to 200 test flights by both MSN1 and MSN3. In total the A350 XWB flight test cam-paign will accumulate around 2,500 flight hours with the fleet of five aircraft. The rigor-ous flight testing will lead to the certification of the A350-900 by the European EASA and US FAA airworthiness authorities, prior to entry into service in Q4 2014.

Wencor Group signs long term PMA contracts with major U.S. airlines

Wencor Group entered into significant long-term supply agreements with two major U.S. airlines. Both agreements leverage Wencor Group’s broad Parts Manufacturer Ap-proval (PMA) parts portfolio and PMA development capabilities to reduce the com-ponent maintenance costs for these two leading airline partners. The first contract includes more than 500 PMA parts for use in components, engines, airframe, and cabin interiors and will significantly reduce piece part costs across the aircraft. The major US airline will also benefit from Wencor Group’s inventory management programs, which will allow the airline to reduce total cost of aircraft ownership by minimizing inventory investment on select parts.

The second contract is a long term part-nering agreement for on-site material supply and new PMA parts development. This unique program provides “power by the hour (PBH)” support that leverages Wencor Group’s ability to provide a com-plete system solution through the use of extensive PMA parts and repair capabili-ties. Avia Solutions Group, a WSE listed global provider of one-stop-shop aviation business solutions, recently signed a cooperation agreement with the largest Russian state-owned holding company Rostec. Both companies have agreed upon establishing a joint busi-ness venture and implementing the project of the development and management of the fourth Moscow airport hub on the basis of existing Ramenskoye aerodrome. Avia Solutions Group is to invest RUB 1bn ($30.3m) into the company’s share capital and control up to 75% of the newly established company stocks. The Russian industrial gi-ant Rostec will contribute to the project by bringing in the land and real estate currently under its ownership in the territory of Ramenskoye aerodrome. In seven years’ time the total investment into the development of the fourth airport in Moscow is expected to top $236m. Avia Solutions Group together with Rostec, which currently unites more than 600 companies and employs over a million people, will conduct the Ramenskoye development project in three stages, planned to be completed in 2014-2019. At the moment the airfield of Ramenskoye, also known under the name of Zhukovsky, has two landing strips one of which is the longest in Europe (5.4 km). In order to transform the airfield into a full-fledged international airport the company needs to build a passenger handling complex and establish all the appropriate services. Therefore, in the first stage of development the existing facilities of Ramenskoye aerodrome will be supplemented with a brand new 7000 m² passenger handling terminal (capable of serving up to 1.8 million of passengers per year) as well as short-term and long-term parking facilities. Avia Solutions Group has embarked on establishing all the required airport services as well as taking care of all the relevant licenses and permits. The first Russian airport specifically built to serve low cost carriers will start its activity as early as in the summer of 2015.

Commsoft signed a two-year, three con-current users’ contract with GGAC Aviation Consultants for the use of OASES. OASES, de-signed to combine ease of use with a technical sophistication that allows for the full integra-tion of all maintenance and engineering func-tions, is structured in a modular format and GGAC will be using the following modules: Core, Airworthiness, Planning and Materials Management. GGAC is providing fleet man-agement support for a small fleet of Boeing 737 ‘classic’ and Airbus aircraft, working both with lessors and a major European airline.

China Eastern Airlines’ new Airbus single aisle fleet will fly with Thales’s newest avionics solutions. The selection includes surveillance systems, flight management systems and head up displays. Following Airbus’ announcement to integrate Thales’s ACSS T3CAS surveillance platform as the preferred solution on all new single aisle aircraft, China Eastern is the first major Chinese airline to select this new gen-eration system. Also equipped on the aircraft will be TopFlight, Thales’s Flight Management System (FMS). This system, developed with GE aviation, is the number one choice for Airbus single aisle jets with over 60% market share. The Thales Head Up Display (HUD) is the sole solution certified on Airbus aircraft and compli-ant with the latest Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) roadmap for HUD integration in Chinese registered commercial aircraft.
