The team at Kelsall Hill began their preparations at the beginning of March for their British Eventing affiliated horse trials on April 24th, 25th and 26th. “Our event caters for riders from the grass roots BE80(T) right up to Advanced Intermediate and we’re delighted to be offering £1000 prize money to the winner of this class along with the Perpetual Winton Family Memorial Trophy. Unlike the other classes the AI starts with dressage then cross country with the show jumping competition running last and riders will then compete in reverse order to add excitement in the arena with tension building as the competition progresses. We hope the atmosphere will create a great experience for both competitors and spectators” says Phil Latham, Land Owner.

Kelsall Hill is fortunate to have Captain Mark Phillips as the course designer. We asked Mark what he sees as the advantages of the venue and to describe what he sees as his role at Kelsall Hill. “Kelsall Hill is renowned throughout the country for its unbelievably good footing come wind, rain or shine. I enjoy the challenge of giving the lower level riders a taste of the questions facing the riders of the upper echelons of the sport while at the same time providing an educational experience for the younger horses with the country’s top professional riders. The great viewing at Kelsall Hill cross country course provides spectators with a unique opportunity to watch the stars of tomorrow crossing the country.”

There’s no doubt that the course will benefit again from the close attention to detail and creativity of course builder David Evans and Mike Pope. Under their waatchful eye the course comes to life with cunning use of sculptures, colour contrasts on treated timber fences and strategic sanding on the natural timber which will aid horse and rider combinations on their journey round. Once the course builders have finished the fences will be beautifully dressed by Ring Craft’s Mary Kennerley who started her career at Kelsall back in 2006 and who now dresses courses all around the country at the highest levels.

“We are working hard to provide competitors with what they want with a well organised and friendly atmosphere” says Jane Whitaker “but we also want to develop our events so that spectators can enjoy them too. We will have plenty of food concessions and range of trade stands catering mainly for the equine market for people to shop at. If you’re not competing we hope to see you here!”

The goal of the Airowear BE80(T)It is hoped that those who enter will learn from their day and also will want to come back for more.

The intention is that the competition is straightforward and ‘friendly’ so that everyonehas a good experience with the emphasis being on fun and education.

We are extremely pleased to announce that Airowear, a brand committed to innovation in the equestrian safety market, has recently taken on generous sponsorship with British Eventing as title sponsors of the BE80 Training series in 2015.

Introduced in 2009, the series has received a fantastic response as an introductory step in to the sport, prompting BE to increase the number of BE80(T) hosting events to 80, boasting over 140 classes around the country.

The purpose of the BE80(T), where T stands for training and 80cm denotes the fence height is to introduce people to the sport with the emphasis being on education, safety and fun. Riders taking part also get the support from dedicated BE Accredited Coaches who are there to help all BE80(T) competitors, completely free of charge.

Airowear are division of Charles Owen, long standing sponsors of the extremely successful BE Pony Programme. Roy Burek, Managing Director of Charles Owen commented: “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to sponsor the BE80(T). It extremely important to us to provide support the entry level riders in Eventing, this series not only offers a great step into the sport but also gives excellent opportunities to gain training and ultimately create good and competitive riders.”

BE Chief Executive, Mike Etherington-Smith commented on this generous sponsorship agreement: “I am delighted to welcome Airowear to the sport as BE80(T) sponsors. This is a rapidly growing area of the sport, their sponsorship is vital in helping our events host this valuable training class for both horses and riders.”

Veredus goes cross countryVeredus ambassador Andrew Nicholson has teamed up with leading horse boot manufacturer to launch its brand new eventing boots, E-vento.

Following extensive research and rigorous testing the E-vento aim to combine maximum protection together with comfort for horses going cross country.

The boots are made in microperforated neoprene AEROX, together with 3D mesh ducted fabric to guarantee double ventilation.

Fully waterproof the boots don’t absorb or retain water, meaning they stay dry despite weather and going conditions. And, although they offer robust protection, the boots are lightweight – allowing greater freedom of movement and flexibility. They also boast protective pads in polyurethane foam which help reduce the shock felt during high impact.

‘My horses’ legs matter,’ said the six time Olympian and five time Burghley winner Andrew Nicholson. ‘The E-vento boots fit, protect and don’t restrict movement - that’s what I need from a cross country boot - it’s that simple.’

Available in black, sizes medium and large, the boots retail at £100 (front) and £110 (back).

Rowan BarbaryFeeding for PerformanceThe nutritional requirements of the competition horse vary greatly depending upon the type and intensity of work being performed but the importance of correct nutrition cannot be over emphasized as diet can have a significant effect on performance.

The energy requirements of the horse are dependent upon a number of factors including the level and intensity of the work being performed, temperament, the individual horses metabolism, temperature and management. Too much energy and the control and concentration may be lost, too little energy and the horse may lack the power and impulsion required to perform at its best.

In the early stage of a fittening programme fibre alongside a low energy feed such as Calm ‘n’ Easy that supplies adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals are quite often all that is required. However, as the horses workload increases so does the horses energy requirements so the diet must be supplemented with additional sources of energy and nutrients to help meet these increased demands.

If you have a horse that tends to be naturally very forward going or can become easily excitable a high oil diet such as Show ‘n’ Glow should be fed. These types of horses will often initially perform well but will often lack the stamina required. Adding oil to the diet will provide an excellent source of slow release energy helping improve stamina and promote sustained performance. For horses that are naturally laid back Leisure Horse Mix will provide cereals to help provide that instant fast release energy, this is useful for horses undertaking short sharp bursts of work. However, a horse in hard or intense work will need a combination of energy sources including fibre, oils, protein and cereals to meet the demands of work, and for this Hunter Competition Mix is recommended.

However, no two horses are alike. A highly strung Thoroughbreds diet will vary dramatically to that of a laid back Middleweight so if you are unsure on how to get the best from you horse contact Rowen Barbary Horse Feeds on 01948 880598 or visit www.rowenbarbary.co.uk
