It is an athletic throwing event where the object is to

throw a heavy metal ball attached to a wire and handle. Like other throwing events, the competition is decided by who can throw the ball the farthest.

The men's hammer weighs 7.257 kg and measures 121.5 cm in length and the women's hammer weighs 4 kg and is 119.5 cm in length.

Description of technique of throwing the hammer

Participant stands in a throwing circle with his back towards the throw direction

He grabs hammer’s handle with both hands Then, the thrower swing the hammer above his head to set up the

circular motion. Then he applies force and pick up speed by completing one to four turns in the circle.

The thrower releases the ball from the front of the circle Until the hammer hits the ground, the thrower cannot cross the

circle line.

• Anita Włodarczyk, born 8th August, 1985 in Rawicz, is a Polish hammer thrower.

• Włodarczyk qualified for the 2008 World Athletics Final and won a bronze medal. The following year, she took part in the 2009 European Team Championships, winning her first gold medal at a major international competition. On 22 August 2009 during the World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Germany Włodarczyk set a world record with a throw of 77.96 metres. On 2nd of September she received Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

Anita Włodarczyk set a new world record in hammer throw.

• Anita Włodarczyk suffered a backache because of a contusion. During the strenght training she started to feel pain in her back. She was transported to the hospital where she undergone complex examination.

It turned out that one of her vertebrae slightly moved out of her spine which

caused pain. Now Anita is undergoing a few days rehabilitation.
