21 January 2019 – LA REPUBBLICA – AFFARI & FINANZA (Business and Finance section of Italian daily “La Repubblica”) THE STORY Italian machinery makes a splash with intelligent packaging This Italian company is partnering with two multinational chemical giants – America's Dow-DuPont and Germany’s Henkel – to design and produce new machines for packaging foodstuffs and many consumer products. It has been working with another giant – German high-tech multinational Siemens – for 20 years to produce integrated automation machinery, that is models which allow communication between themselves and the company. It has also signed an iron-clad agreement with Australian company Amcor, the world’s leading supplier of flexible packaging for fresh products, which has allowed to install in 37 of the group’s plants its own machines, of over 3000 produced. These are just some of the partnerships which Nordmeccanica, a stand-out international success in Italy’s packaging industry, has developed over 40 years in business, an anniversary celebrated in grand style last month in Piacenza. The group's northern-Italian home town welcomed hundreds of guests and big players in the sector from all over the world, from Africa to India and China. The company, run by Antonio Cerciello alongside his sons, both vice presidents – Vincenzo (technical director) and Alfredo (financial director) – exports 95% of its production, and is the world leader laminating machines for flexible packaging (with a market share of 75%). “Ours is a sector which is more fragmented than many – just 30-40% is in the hands of large multinational groups, no more,” clarifies the president. Nordmeccanica's turnover has grown from 45 to 110 million Euros in the last decade, with an annual growth rate constantly hovering at around 10%. The company spends 5% of its turnover on R&D, with 300 employees spread across five plants: three in Italy, one in China (Shanghai), and one in the USA (New York). It also runs two offices providing technical support in Argentina (Buenos Aires) and India (Mumbai), plus an extensive network of agents which covers 87 countries around the world. “We are expecting to close 2019 with turnover of 120 million Euros, because production has begun at the former division of Officine Galileo in Florence, which we took over and relaunched. We are already working on a 14-million-Euro order,” Cerciello reveals. The interesting aspect of this company, Galileo Vacuum System, is its production of metallisation machines for paper and plastic films: “It is a technique which allows us to produce alternative packaging sheets and films which do not use aluminium,” the entrepreneur explains. “It provides a product which is as shiny and impermeable as typical aluminium products, but offers significant savings in terms of raw materials.” Metallisation is an innovative technique which has the potential to represent a further mainstay of Nordmeccanica's business. The company's core business is the production of machinery – which ranges in size and price from models costing 200,000 to over a million Euros – which produces laminated multi-layer packaging, used above all for foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals. One of the selling points of the company's machines is their ability to laminate the outer films, printed with the product branding and details, to the inner films which come into contact with the foodstuffs, using non-polluting adhesive technology. “Our customers are the producers of packaging, the so-called converters, who manufacture the packaging for the end customers, 80% of whom in our case are in the food sector, such as Barilla or Ferrero, “ observes Cerciello. “But flexible multilayer packaging, produced using Nordmeccanica machinery, is also used for high-tech products such as solar panels, technical clothing and special packaging types.” The goal of the Piacenza-based group is to ride the packaging trend which is developing in China, where a new food safety law came into force in 2015. This has begun to have its first effects, imposing ever-higher quality standards on the food industry – also in terms of packaging, which must be completely solvent free in order to reduce the risk of contamination. “Demand in China is currently for 55 machines per year, and this is destined to grow fast. It is something we have already seen happen in Japan and in Korea,” the businessman concludes. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ______________________________________________________________________
