UmbriaDubbed the green heart of Italy, Umbria has a gentle pastorallandscape and a high mountain wilderness.

Perugia, the regions capital, dates from Etruscantimes and has had many rulers, all of whom haveleft their mark. Visitors are able to stroll through the

squares and narrow streets, bordered by medieval towerhouses, visiting churches and museums in 13th and 14thcentury palaces with their priceless Etruscan, Roman,Medieval and Renaissance treasures.

The hilltop town ofAssisi, in the heart of Umbria, isindelibly associated with St Francis. The narrow streetsafford lovely views at every corner, many lined withgolden-pink stone buildings with owers in window boxesand on balconies.

Gubbio, once dubbed the city of silence, is a delightful,historic hill town and lies at the mouth of a gorge on thesteep slopes of Mount Ingino. The town seems hardlyto have changed for centuries, the medieval buildingsforming a tting backdrop to ancient ceremonies andtraditions still performed with enthusiasm by the townsinhabitants. There is much to see in Gubbio itself and,outside the town walls, is a rst century Roman theatre.

Montemelino, a tiny, ancient hilltop hamlet, just 11kmfrom Lake Trasimeno (Italys fourth-largest lake) and 14kmfrom the medieval university town of Perugia (the cultural

centre of Umbria) is set admist olive trees, vineyards andwoods. The village church is the Sanctuary of Our Lady ofLourdes a destination of pilgrims for over one hundredyears. Montemelino serves as an ideal base from whichto explore the town ofOrvieto, a medieval town built ona plateau and dominating the surrounding valley. Famousfor its wine, the Duomo and the Etruscan necropolis, thecity is rich in historic buildings, good restaurants and

bars. Rome can easily be reached on day trips by trainfrom Montemelino.

South of the region lies the medieval town ofSpoleto,one of Umbrias most enchanting treasures. Its grandeurdates back to the 9th century when the Lombards,the early rulers, had laid claim to the Imperial throne,making Spoleto, for a short time, the capital of the wholeRoman Empire. Today, the historic town is known morefor its impressive 240 metre span bridge, designed bythe Gubbian architect Gattapone and extending acrossa beautiful panorama of Umbrian countryside. Anotherattraction is the annual arts festival Festival dei DueMondi which is comparable to the Edinburgh FringeFestival, drawing crowds from near and far throughoutearly July. Visit Spoleto at the end of May and you will ndvast poppy elds surrounding the town.
