On Thursday, May 16, 2013 IVEDC hosted the Imperial Valley Economic
Outlook Roundtable meeting with Acting Deputy Under Secretary of USDA
Rural Development, Judy Canales. Led by IVEDC's VP of Business Services,
Sean Wilcock and IVEDC's Board Chairman, Tom DuBose, topics discussed
were maquiladora activities and history, bio-fuels, local algae development,
agricultural exports, ports of entry and the state of Imperial County's economy.
The positive economic impacts of renewable energy were a highlight of the
meeting and referred to as a shot in the arm to the economy of Imperial County.
The meeting was packed with interactive participation from all stakeholders in
attendance that offered valuable insight to local economic development and
challenges. Topics of workforce development and jobs were also featured along
with Salton Sea issues and transportation.
Ms. Canales discussed just a few of the USDA's more than 40 programs
designed for rural communities and development as tools that we as
developers of the economy can access to enhance the strength and stability of
valley businesses.
