I was a Graphic Design Intern at Madwell in Brooklyn, New York

Getting started...

I spent a lot of time researching alumni and other potential connections in the industry, and then reached out for informational interviews. It was very helpful to hear about experiences in the industry and the path to get where they are today. In most cases, forging a relationship with someone on the inside helped to ultimately get an offer! I thought I’d like working at an agency, and interning was a perfect way to try it without a long-term commitment. I learned that I really love the problem-solving element of design and the fulfilling experience of seeing

your work positively impact the lives of others. Now, I know I definitely love working in the field! Bringing my story to life...

My classes in Sam Fox have prepared me for the real-world demands and pace of an agency. In the Communication Design program, we have a diverse range of classes, allowing students to explore various facets of the broad graphic design industry. I attended Jen Meyer’s weekly career workshops, which were especially helpful because the design industry operates much differently than others.

She helped to break down the application process – with everything from resume design to follow-up thank you letters – and made the process much less intimidating. My internship take-away...

At Madwell there was no set “internship program,” which I was thankful for. I had the opportunity to essentially function like any other designer in the company, and had the same opportunities as all the full time employees. I was able to pitch my own ideas, design for a wide variety of real-world projects, and see final results and client feedback.
