Trace the appliqué patterns onto paper side of fusible webbing. Cut out leaving about a 1/8” border

around each shape. Iron to WRONG sides of fabrics. Cut out on line, remove paper backing.

Iron appliqué shapes to cream background, noting areas of overlap (dotted lines) on patterns. Machine

appliqué. (For the eyes, you do not need to appliqué around the edges- these pieces will be secured

with embroidery- just iron on for now.)

Trace Hen and Chick feet, and words, onto background fabric. Embroider with a backstitch, using 3

strands of floss (orange for feet, brown for words).

Use brown floss to make a French knot in the center of each eye (this will secure the white circle of the

eye), and to dot the “i” in “petit”.

Trim the background square to 12 1/2”.

Sew 2 of the Yellow borders (3 1/2” x 12 ½”) to opposite sides of cream square. Sew the other 2 borders

(3 1/2” x 18 ½”) to the remaining sides of the cream square. Press seam allowances toward borders.

Place a Red square RIGHT sides together with a Blue square. You will have 12 “square pairs.”

Use a ruler and a pencil to draw a line diagonally from corner to corner, on the WRONG side of the fabric

of each “square pair”. Then draw a line 1/4” on either side of this line. I like to use a see-through ruler

for this step. (You can also just draw the line down the center, and use your 1/4” foot to sew 1/4” away

from that center line… but I like the accuracy I get by drawing in all of the lines.)

Pin the pairs together, and sew on those “side” lines (not the center line), then cut on the center line:

You will now have 24 HST (half-square triangle) units. Press the seam allowances

toward the blue.

Trim the HST’s to 3 1/2” square.

Sew the units into pairs; press seam allowances open (units should measure 3 1/2” x 6 1/2”.) Sew the

pairs together to create 4 border rows; press seam allowances open (3 1/2” x 18 1/2”)

Sew 2 of the pieced border rows to the sides of the quilt. Press seam allowances toward borders. Sew

yellow border corner squares (3 ½”) to each end of the remaining 2 pieced border rows; press seam

allowances open. Sew border rows to top and bottom of quilt and press seam allowances toward

borders.

Sew 2 blue borders (1 1/2” x 24 ½”) to sides of quilt: press seam allowances toward blue borders. Sew

remaining blue borders (26 ½”) to top and bottom of quilt; press seam allowances toward blue borders.

Quilt as desired. Bind with Brown fabric.
