Tomorrow’s Leaders
CREMONA SCHOOL NEWS
The staff and students at Cremona School
would like to extend a huge thank you to the
Lions Cremona Branch. They are a pillar of
support to our school and continue to enrich
our students’ experiences. Many of our
programs and organizations such as the
Breakfast Program and The Cremona School
Enhancement Society have benefitted
immensely from the Club’s generous
donations. The Cremona Lions are dedicated
to our youth, many who have had their first
volunteer experience with the club. The
relationships that the Lions are fostering with
our students are priceless. We look forward to
continuing to work with such an inspiring
group of philanthropists!

The Fantastic Friday that took place on October 18, 2013 was a huge success as our students
participated in 18 different engaging activities – the Fire Truck demonstration even made the
newspaper! The remaining dates are February 14, 2014 and May 9, 2014 and the sessions will be held
from 2:00-3:00pm. We hope to offer a variety of activities to our students this year and we are
currently recruiting presenters from our amazing community!
The potential for engaging and authentic learning in this program is immense. The philosophy is
that this program gives all Cremona School students opportunities to focus on areas of special interest
or talent that may not otherwise be offered in the regular classroom. Each age group (K-3, 4-7, 8-12)
will have multiple, age-appropriate activities from which individuals (or their parents) may choose to
participate on each ‘Fantastic Friday’. Students will benefit from the expertise and passions of people
in their community and be exposed to a wide-variety of hands-on activities. Additionally, students will
be working in multi-age groups where positive relationships will be fostered.
If you or someone you know would be interested and able to provide a unique learning experi-
ence for any of the age groups that can be completed in one hour please contact Shaleen Kellert or
Shauna Ward at the school so that we can arrange the details.
Thank you in advance for your support,

Focusing on health and wellness
A message from the Superintendent
It is fitting that we start the new year with a renewed focus on efforts being made to support the health and well-being of our students, staff and families. We know that ensuring a healthy physical and social environment in our schools can positively impact student performance and academic achievement, and people in our schools work hard every day to help each of our students reach their full potential.
Ensuring the health and wellness of our students begins with their safe transportation to school each day. Through the efforts of our division and school leaders, and with the support of our Board, we have been able to begin structur-ing a new approach to how we will respond as a division to Inclement Weather. We are working on updating this pro-cedure so that our students, staff and families can begin each school day with safety foremost in mind. To review the December 17th letter which outlines the changes to our Inclement Weather response, please visit our website at www.chinooksedge.ab.ca.
I thank everyone whose efforts are supporting these priorities, and I wish all of our Chinook’s Edge families a happy and healthy new year.

Counsellor’s Corner
The current Grade 12s are well on their way to Post-Secondary! All but four have had their interviews, the rest will be complet-
ed the first 2 weeks of January. They have made excellent and informed choices which include the University of Calgary, Uni-
versity of Alberta, University of Lethbridge, Mount Royal University, Red Deer College, Olds College, and SAIT! Parents and
students, our “local scholarships” will be arriving soon so please call if you have questions! This includes the Lion’s Volunteer-
ism one and the Mountain View Credit Union scholarships. Also remember post-secondary schools offer their own scholar-
ships so be sure to check this out on their web-sites.
I would like to thank the grade 12 students who talked to our younger students about the importance of good marks, attending
Post-Secondary Open Houses, and the Encounters Program.
I will begin the Grade 11 interviews in February, some of them already have next year planned and others are still researching.
We will also do some personality surveys for those who have no idea!
I will also be spending some “career time” with the Grade 9s and 10s in February and March and hope to take a bus to Calgary
to tour SAIT and Mount Royal University towards the end of the year with the grade 10s and 11s.
GRADE 8 PARENTS: I have worked twice with this group and cannot believe their questions and interest level! We discussed
the importance of their marks NOW for high school and looked at the differences in colleges, universities, and trades. They
then looked at brochures for post-secondary and talked about how much money it costs to attend a college or university.
Parents or students if you have any questions on Post-Secondary, High School graduation requirements, or scholarships please
call me!

Spring Break of 2015 current Grade 9, 10, and 11 students (and or parents) are invited to spend 12 days in France and Italy! The tour begins in Paris, then to Nice, Cinque Terre (Italy), Siena, Rome, and finishes with the Capri. Please contact Mme. Dougherty for
details!

Leadership News
Welcome 2014! Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative this year and we will be able
to get all of our events completed. Due to the loss of class time in December a lot of our
events had to be cancelled such as our Movember campaign ( which we hope to do this
month), middle school Christmas dance, door decorating and much more. We appreciate
your patience and understanding.
Thanks to all that brought in food for the food drive, even with our shortened collection time
we still collected over 1200 food items! Congratulations to grade 4, grade 8 and grade 10 for
earning the most points. On Friday January 10, we will be having our first middle school
dance, a New Years dance, entrance is purchase of $2 party favor, at the door. In honor of
our exchange teacher Mr. Fuller, January 10 will also be Aussie Day. Dress up in the coun-
tries colours, wear your UGGs, use your imagination. January 22 will be Pajama Day, in hon-
or of the last day before exams for high school. A big thank you to all that purchased Rafikki
bracelets, we raised $560 for the people in Africa. If demand remains we will be selling them
again for Valentine’s Day.

Test Stress: What to do for your wellbeing!
It’s that time of year. Does the word “test” make your stomach drop? Test stress is very common, but there are ways to
beat so can arrive at test day feeling prepared, relaxed and calm.
How it feels:
Test stress usually starts off as a nagging worry. You might want to put off studying because you don’t want to face it, or
you might think negative thoughts, like: “I am going to fail this test”, or “If I fail the test, then I am a failure”. On test day
or during the best you might experience the following:
Pounding, racing heart
Difficulty breathing
Sweating
Upset stomach and diarrhea
Dizziness
Mind going blank
Put it into perspective:
Studying and preparing for the test are the best ways to decrease test stress.
Study as best you can and try to relax, deep breathing helps if you are feeling tense, and you can do this at
any time.
Try to remember that tests are only one part of how you will be graded; teachers also have other
means including presentations, essays and group projects in which to determine a grade.
If you find yourself thinking negative thoughts like “I will never do well on tests” or “I am going to fail” try
to replace them with more realistic thoughts, like “I just need to try my best” or “I know I can do
this”.
If you put pressure on yourself to get perfect on your tests, it’s important to know that this just isn’t possible.
Remember that everyone makes mistakes, and that’s okay.
Here are some helpful test taking tips.
Arrive on time – at least 5 minutes before so you are settled and don’t feel rushed.
Come prepared – Bring any materials that you need.
Take a deep breath – try to stay calm, you have studied and you are there to do your best.
Put your first and last name on the test … you would be surprised how students forget this.
Read it over – after you receive the test, read through the questions, this will help you manage you time.
Read the instructions carefully – try to do what the question is asking and you don’t have to write any
more than you are asked.
Move on: If you don’t the answer to a question, circle it so you can come back to I later and move on to
the next question.
Manage your time – spend you time on questions that are worth more marks.
Multiple choice – with multiple choice questions, try to think of the answer before looking at the choices.
When you are done the test, read it over before you hand it in. When the test is over remind yourself that
you did try your best. Don’t fret about what you got wrong, the test is done and you can’t change the
outcome. Reward yourself by hanging out with friends or participating in your favorite activity.

EVENT DATE: Thursday, April 10/14, Robb Nash LOCATION: Cremona School (206 –3rd St E. , 403-637-3856)
SHOW TIME: 9:15-10:15am (setup begins at 7:45am)
ROBB NASH – CONCERT AND PRESENTATION
Robb is becoming nationally known for leaving a successful music career in order to share his dra-matic story and inspire young people from coast to coast.
Robb was the victim of a serious car accident, a head on coll ision with a semi - truck. He was found with a fractured skull and pronounced dead. Before the ambulance arrived at the hospital, Robb’s pulse had miraculously returned. After a diff icult recovery, and despite signif icant physical and emotional scars, Robb was left with a new outlook on life.
He started his band to share his philosophy through the medium of music, and soon had songs in the Canadian Top 10. Robb saw musical success as a platform from which to inf luence and moti-vate young people. Robb put aside the stadium touring circuit, to speak to youth in their schools across the country, playing his songs and sharing their meaning.
Robb and his band bring their presentation to more than 200 schools through 150 shows each year. He speaks to over 50,000 students directly, and touches another 500,000 through other mediums like Facebook and YouTube.
Robb exudes posit ive energy in story and song, and sensit ively deals with many serious issues that he’s experienced f irsthand. He relates directly to the youth of today and inspires them to make changes in themselves and the world around them.
“I ’ve spoken to thousands of young people across Canada. So many are missing out on their desti-nies. The issues they’re dealing with are consistent, and I knew that i could use my inf luence and my music to help. I went through a severely traumatic experience before I realized how important each day and each decision is. I don’t want them to have to f ind out the same way.”
