2007 (less than a year after I
started with MS&F  in 2006).
Not only am I proud to be doing the 200th issue this
month, but I am happy to say
2016 marks a decade for me
being this magazine's Editor in
Chief and Creative Director.
This year is just full of
milestones for many of us! Max Muscle turns a quarter century
this year (read all about how the company got started on pg.
20). Dr. Phil Harvey, who has been with Max Muscle nearly as
long as I have, now has 200 product creations under his belt.
And, did I mention this is the 200th ISSUE of MS&F ??? Exciting
indeed!

Plus, check out the recipe for a refreshing Shredded Brussels

weight-loss supplements and learn about three foods that will

MAX'S MAJOR MILESTONES It’s hard for me to believe that this issue
of Max Sports & Fitness  magazine is
our 200th issue! When we started this
magazine, it was a 20-page black and
white newspaper publication. Over the
years, it has grown and evolved into what you see today. We are very proud
to have kept the magazine going all of
these years and to be able to deliver
such a high-quality magazine full of great
content to our valued customers. We
get so much positive feedback from our
readers that Max Sports & Fitness  magazine provides incredible value
and it is often compared to the paid newsstand publications. Being able
to give this magazine to our customers for free is just one of the many
reasons Max Muscle is unlike any other retailer in our industry.

customers, awesome franchisees across the country, international
partners from around the world, and all of us here at the corporate

brand is the best in the business.
I believe it is the best because of the integrity of our company. We
have always focused on delivering products that are not only backed by
science but are also safe for our customers and contain only the highest
quality ingredients. And because of our commitment to quality, the
bottom line is that Max Muscle customers get results.
At TellMaxMuscle.com, we get feedback from customers telling us that
after switching to the Max Muscle brand they notice a difference and they
actually start seeing gains and progress being made. This is validation forus that our commitment to quality and doing things the right way makes
a difference and it is the main reason why I’m able to write this editorial

FEEDBACK   Results, photos, comments and thank you's
from people across the United States who make up the great Max Nation.
On October 1st, we were honored to receive the Gold Seal Award in a special ceremony inside our store full of Chamber of Commerce members and City officials along with other community-minded individuals and families. The award recognizes outstanding community service. Mayor Eugene Montanez said that our business is one of the only local businesses that’s done what we’ve done. The “…amount of work we did in our community before even opening our doors was significant in both scope and scale.” The mayor said he “…hadn’t seen this level of community commitment or presence since Taps moved in” 10 years ago. As a business family, we and our employees spent weekends and evenings giving back to the people in our community. One weekend we spent the day with the Corona Fire Department filling Vials for Life alongside them and another afternoon supported the firemen in a Wing Eating Contest to raise money for charity. Another day we joined the Food Runners charity helping to sell water bottles to raise money for their youth. We’ve participated in Community Outreach programs for the Police Department, supported the Riverside Sherriff’s Department in charity golf tournaments, worked with a local mom to raise money to help her son have reconstructive surgery, and been a key contributor in the Healthy Corona Organization. Not to mention our support of local athletes from an array of backgrounds (Crossfit, Jiu-Jitsu, BodyBuilding, Weightlifting, Ladies Football, MMA) reach for their dreams. It’s been a whirlwind, but doing what’s right for our community is ultimately what’s right for our business.
–Amanda Boyd, Max Muscle Corona Franchisee
As a strength and conditioning coach, I know firsthand that a weak mind and body cannot compete at the championship level. We as a Herriman High School Mustang
Family are truly honored that Mark Painter, owner of Max Muscle South Jordan, Utah chose our team to sponsor. There's no doubt that the fuel provided by Max Muscle gave us a safe and effective means of keeping our players hydrated and ready to dominate. We are also thankful for the support of Max Muscle headquarters, which provided post game T-shirts for our team on very short notice. The shirts made it just in time to be presented during the post game Utah 5A football championship celebration (we beat Lone Peak High School 17-14). Since the football program began six years ago, we have become the sixth-youngest program to earn a championship banner!
–Christian Sandoval, Herriman HS Football Strength & Conditioning Coach
YOUTH ATHLETE OUTREACH Max Muscle South Metro, CO hosted the Arapahoe High School Boys Lacrosse Program at the Centennial location for a
nutritional seminar to kick off the preseason training. Tryouts are in March and they wanted to be 100 percent prepared.
Congratulations are in order for Dr. Phil Harvey, Max Muscle's
Chief Science officer and head of product development!
Not only is this Max Muscle's 25th year in business, and
the magazine is celebrating its 200th issue, but Dr. Phil is
celebrating his 200th product with Max Muscle! Thanks for all
the hard work and dedication over your nine and a half years
Dr. Phil! We're sure Max Muscle customers are grateful for you
too! Here's to many more years of continued success!

1st Show at Age 55
On Sept. 19th, I did my third Men's Physique show in Fresno, CA and I took 2nd
place. I dedicated this show to cancer surviors, the ones who are fighting cancer, and to the ones who lost their lives to cancer like my mom did. This is why I was
in pink. I am a Max Muscle sponsored athlete by Max Muscle East Bakersfield. I love to compete in the Men's Physique shows. Some you win or place and some
you don't. You just have to keep moving forward and train harder next time.
My next goal is to turn pro in Men's Physique. After doing four MaxFormations, I thought i would try a different journey. After people said I could not make it to
compete, I proved them wrong. I know my mom is watching over me from heaven
and is proud of her superstar. –Eric 'Superstar' Coronado
A few years ago, I relocated to Loveland, Colorado from California. Shortly after my relocation, my mother died suddenly and tragically. I felt myself sinking into a deep hole. My sadness placed me at an all-time low. The only exercise in which I participated was walking to my kitchen! I decided to join a gym in an effort
to perhaps help myself. Within days of my first visit to the gym, I noticed a Max Muscle storefront. I stopped in only to learn it was their second day open! I had no clue WHAT I needed or WHY I needed it. I was counseled to start with a few good supplements and MaxPro Protein.
Every few weeks thereafter, I stopped in at Max Muscle Loveland. Ryan and Tony were my new “best friends”…both mentioned to me that perhaps I should consider “competing.” I had absolutely NO CLUE what they were talking about. Ryan and Tony “educated me.” However, I remained at a total loss as to how anyone could think a 54-year-old woman could put on a bikini without being arrested for indecent exposure!
Ryan and Tony wanted me to talk to Erin Brady. When I met Erin, I was almost in tears. I was uncomfortable in my own
skin and almost had a heart attack when I had to show her my “problem areas.” Erin is exceptionally beautiful, which made me feel even MORE uncomfortable.
Erin was kind and encouraging. She told me, “WE can do this! I gotcha, Sister.” I knew then “WE” meant I was not alone on this journey. She proceeded to create my stacking, and counseled me on everything from my Max Muscle supplements to what to expect when competing. She invited me to training sessions, Max Muscle functions and events…and she checked on me regularly to see how I was feeling.
Tony even steered me to a NEW gym and a great trainer where I could focus more on “competitor training.” When I became overwhelmed with “meal prep”…he even helped me find a solution! This continued for over a year!
FINALLY, it was SHOWTIME! Erin and team were my greatest fans…as I proudly donned my NoCo Max Muscle robe – I realized that without Erin and her team, THIS would not have been possible. Here I was, about to take the stage at 55 years of age, at the Jay Cutler Wyoming Classic. Erin, of course, was there, posse in tow, to support me and others she had coached to the stage.
I was no longer sad, unhealthy, and out-of-shape. I was happy, strong, and in the best shape of my life! At 55 years of age, I even placed halfway through the pack of competitors 17 years old to 32 years old! I can’t thank Erin Brady and her NoCo Max Muscle Team enough! These folks don’t just sell Max Muscle products and supplements…they CHANGE LIVES!
–Renee’ Roamingwind Hencey, Nationally QualifiedGrand Masters Bikini Champion and Competitor
Irma Pritchard is a dedicated and loyal Max Muscle employee who works out of the Los Alamitos store. In addition to being a loyal and dedicated employee, she is a true believer in the Max Muscle products. Over the course of the last five  years, Irma has transformed her life by giving back to her customers. At the age of 56, she is a true testament to women and men that age is only a number. She decided to begin transforming her body as well as helping customers transform their bodies. By using the high quality Max Muscle supplements, this gave her
a jump start as she began her journey.Irma transformed her body into a work of art, she continues helping others do the same.   Irma has competed in women's bodybuilding shows under the physique category and took first place. This was a huge accomplishment based on the younger age group she's had to compete with. Irma has also inspired her customers and trainees to compete as well. Her focus on helping others without
asking for anything in return is a genuine quality. Her love for Max Muscle and helping others reach their goals should be applauded.   In closing, I am so proud of how Irma has helped others, including myself. Her hard work and dedication to Max Muscle should be acknowledged. Thank you your consideration and I am confident that you will be pleased in showcasing Irma on your magazine.

I AM PROUD to announce in 2016 Max Muscle will be celebrating 25
years in business. These 25 years have gone by very fast and honestly
it’s hard to believe we have been doing this for 25 years! The reason
I am so proud of everyone here at Max Muscle is that we have strongly beaten the odds. It is estimated
that up to 95 percent of businesses fail within 5-10 years. I am sure we
have survived miniscule odds to be in business 25 years, and that makes me
very proud of our team. One of my favorite Steve Jobs
quotes is, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” This
is a simple yet very truthful statement that I love to apply within our work
ethic at Max Muscle. I am proud to say that Max Muscle has always been
an innovator. As I look back at all of our great accomplishments over the

HEALTH BEAT  From measuring happiness to going barefoot, here are the latest blurbs about health and nutrition. BY LINDA HEPLER, BSN, RN
CAN HAPPINESS BE
MEASURED? Happiness is a subjective experience. And it’s difficult to measure because what
makes one person happy may not float the next person’s boat. But recently,
researchers from Kyoto University found that those who describe themselves asmost happy have more grey matter mass in the precuneus (a part of the brain)
on MRI testing. Why is this significant? The scientists say that by learning what
things increase the grey matter – such as meditation, yoga, exercise, and taking
omega 3 – people can take action to improve their happiness quotient.
Barefootin' for Healthy Feet Want healthier feet? Then kick off your shoes, says a study from Ithaca College. Contact with the ground, especially during activities like yoga, martial arts, and dance, strengthens the foot’s core stability and prevents common injuries like plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and shin splints.
PERSONALIZING NUTRITION Are you doing everything right and still can’t lose weight? A recent Israeli study demonstrated that how various foods are metabolized differs greatly from person to person. Participants were asked to record their food intake in a mobile app food diary and measure blood sugar levels on a glucose monitor after eating. Surprisingly, foods that are considered “healthy” such as tomatoes, were found to be “unhealthy” for some people, provoking high blood sugar levels. The scientists hope that the research will help dieticians and doctors move toward a more personalized nutrition model.

Do you feel like smacking your husband (or at least lashing out verbally) when he crunches an apple or the ice in his drink? Do soup slurping sounds drive you berserk? If so, you may have “misophonia,” a poorly understood condition where human eating sounds intensely irritate you. While researchers believe that misophonia may
be associated with other mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and OCD, there is good news. A recent study at Northwestern University demonstrated that those who are affected adversely by sounds score high on tests gauging creativity. So just call yourself creative – and move along.

in big changes in a relatively short amount of time, there are many other changes we can make that, while having less visible results, have a huge impact on our health over the long haul. What bad habits should you consider breaking in 2016? Here are FIVE you can’t afford not to consider:

Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
Shortly after New Year’s Eve last year, a study published in the Annals
of Internal Medicine  suggested that those who sit for prolonged periods of time – even those who exercise regularly – are at increased risk for heart disease, diabetes,
cancer, and death. It seems that prolonged sitting, whether in front of TV or in front of your computer at work, or driving,
slows down the biochemical processes needed to break down harmful fats and sugars in your body. That hour you spend a day at the gym? While any amount of exercise is good, it simply is not enough to counteract the damage spent by sitting, say the experts.   What to do – especially if you have a sedentary job? If you can’t get your hands on a standing desk, at least stand more during the day said Katy Bowman, MS, biomechanist and author of Don’t Just Sit There . “Walk for three minutes every KDOI KRXU WR NHHS WKH EORRG ÀRZLQJ VPRRWKO\´ VKH DGYLVHG

Leaching is increased at high temperatures (think food microwaved in a plastic
container or covered with plastic wrap, or hot liquids placed in a plastic bottle or

How to avoid plastics? The best option is to eat fresh foods and to avoid

Use glass or stainless steel containers for food storage and for drinking, and

In the cutthroat industry of health and fitness, companies come and go without warning. With 140+ stores across the United States, not only has Max Muscle remained a force to
be reckoned with, but it’s also proven to be a cutting-edge brand that consumers know and trust. This year, as Max Muscle celebrates its 25-year anniversary in business, CEO and founder Joe Wells shares the story of how it all began and his high hopes for the future.

in a way it was a selfish motivation.
As time went on and the business grew, that passion

Now it is more about doing it to get our customers the

I remember when the Max Muscle magazine was a traditional

It has truly been a privilege to photograph nearly a quarter of the covers for Max Sports & Fitness magazine. Over the past few
years we've had the opportunity to work with fitness competitors, professional athletes, military Veterans, weight loss champions,  personal trainers and more. The unifying thread is they all shared a passion for striving to achieve a better life. Our featured
subjects not only inspire the readers, they also inspire our team as well. Happy Birthday to Max Muscle and looking forward to the
next 200 issues. – James Patrick, Max Sports & Fitness' official photographer
I love that you are always asking for the Franchisees feedback on the magazine, that you take article ideas from us, and our

I could start by saying so much great things but it will take a long write-up about it. ... I truly don't have a favorite issue, I love them

Ten years ago, MS&F was a gritty, hardcore, nitch magazine focused almost exclusively on men and their pursuit of putting on
muscle. Today the magazine has evolved into a mainstream publication that is sought after by men and women alike and the focus
is on maintaining good health through education, proper diet, responsible supplementation and exercise. This magazine promotes
a lifestyle that is healthy and it is educational for the whole family. – Scott Herkes, MMSN Franchisee in Illinois & Iowa

According to a Nielsen survey, some 45

During the new year, we all have the best of intentions to begin a healthier lifestyle, but many of us fail to keep the momentum going. As motivation (which is based on wanting something, like a skinny bod or NOT wanting something like a fat one) diminishes, we depend upon willpower to keep us going. But willpower is a finite
resource. How can we take advantage of the willpower we have to begin and sustain new and healthy habits? Here are five tips on how to be successful!
Did You Know? According to the Statistic Brain Research Institute, people who actually make New Year’s Resolutions are more likely to commit to their changes than
those who just try and change.

weight. You’re so discouraged, you’re ready
to give up.
lose weight is often genetically based and
outside of your control. If your goal is a lowerweight or BMI, you can’t control the precise
outcome. The challenge here is to have
‘outcome based goals,’ which are goals you
can control. If you set a behavioral goal of
how many times you’ll go to the gym each
week, how much water you drink, or how
many fruits and vegetables you’ll eat each
day, you will be able to control the outcome
and feel more successful.”
had your name written all over it. But you
didn’t stop there – why bother, since you already blew it? So you followed up with
chips and dip, ice cream, and a breakfast
Cinnabon.
a balance between self-discipline and self-
compassion. Your discipline can fall apart
sometimes, so you must have compassion for
yourself. Think of it as how you would speak
to a friend in a similar situation. You’d tell
that person that they made a mistake, but
they can start over and be successful.”
PROBLEM: You’re trying to stick with your
workout plan. But it seems like every time
you tell your buddies you’re going to the gym,
they have other ideas. More often than you’d
like, you find yourself at the sports bar, tossing
back a few while you watch the game.
NICK’S SUGGESTION: “It’s bad for your
confidence when you don’t have a support
system in place; your belief in yourself is borne
of a communal experience. If you’re willing to
find new friends, your ‘tribe,’ those who are
doing the same things you are, you’ll be more
successful. But if you’re not willing to go that
far, you can take the stance that ‘maybe I can
help my friends out by being a role model.’
PROBLEM: It’s week two and you feel your
motivation for living a healthy lifestyle waning
in a big way. What to do?
 NICK’S SUGGESTION: “Motivation can’t
be relied on – it’s fickle, it suffers whims of
emotion and mood. Lasting change is more
about consistency than motivation, and more
about action than feeling. Feelings don’t
dictate your actions all of the time; many
times you do what you need to do in other
situations, such as get up and go to work even
if you feel like staying in bed. Think of your
resolution in the same way. ‘This is how I feel,
but this is what I do.’”
PROBLEM: OK, I know it’s good for me. But
it’s just not fun!
NICK’S SUGGESTION: “This is all about
deprivation. For a lot of people, healthy food
and exercise is just not fun. Unhealthy food
and relaxing is fun. If you’re feeling deprived
of what used to give you joy, you need to
find things that bring you joy, pleasure,
good feelings, and relief f rom stress. Find a
replacement for unhealthy behaviors that can
give you the same feelings, such as painting or
drawing, learning a new language, or playing
an instrument.”

There are many qualities of successful people, but
many will concede that drive, passion, and patience

For 25 Years Max Muscle has always done things differently. The company was founded based on the
principle that we would lead and not follow. In creating our brand, we would only make products that were safe
and effective. We would use only the highest quality ingredients. We would manufacture our products in the
USA. We would develop formulas based on scientific evidence.

In creating our franchise system, we would ensure that our customers get results by having certified nutrition
coaches in stores, offer nutrition consultations and customized meal planning, utilize the most advanced body
composition analysis to track our customers progress and provide an in-store experience like no other. We
would educate, not sell. Many of these innovative approaches have been copied by our competitors and as
the saying goes, “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. We are flattered and it validates for us that being
the first to introduce these unique approaches is the better way to do things. For us it’s always been about
doing what it takes to get our customer results.
In Celebration of our 25th year in business , we are offering an unprecedented opportunity to become
a Max Muscle franchise. Now you can own your own Max Muscle store and pay NO Initial Franchise Fee
and NO Royalties*! This is a limited time offer though so if you want to take advantage of this incredible
promotion, then you must act quickly.

If you have a passion for helping people achieve their health & fitness goals, Max Muscle provides the
opportunity to change lives. There’s been no better time than right now to get into business for yourself and do
what you love to do!
