A range hood is essential in any kitchen, but how to choose the right one for your home? Style, colour, and performance options are the obvious criteria, but homeowners should also ensure that their chosen model has been independently tested and certi ed.

It’s important that the range hood be a match for the size of the kitchen and type of stove. The fan must be powerful enough to renew the air of the kitchen approximately 10 times per hour, which is why you must know the size of the kitchen before choosing one.

Another factor to consider is that there should be at least a 20- to 24-inch clearance between the cooking surface and the lowest part of the hood. If your hood’s fan is powerful enough, it could be installed up to 30 inches from the cooking surface.

Hoods should be installed with a duct leading to the outside, preferably with a 3 1/4 inch-diameter metal pipe with smooth rather than undulating sides. If it isn’t possible to install an outdoor-evacuating range hood, there are models available with carbon lters. Never evacuate the air from a hood into an

attic, walls, garage, or crawl space, as the humidity and heat from the kitchen could damage the insulation or even the structure of the house.

Before making a nal choice, keep in mind that even though stainless steel range hoods are often the most eye-catching, they are also the most dif cult to maintain and clean — be sure to choose a hood that you will be able to care for easily and clean often.

As the old proverb says “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. And this is very true when it comes to your driveway, the main entrance to your home.

Although some driveways are made of concrete, asphalt is much more common because it is so much cheaper. And it is here that the ravages caused by our severe climate can be the most visible.

As with anti-rust treatments for cars, the best solution remains preventive maintenance. It is recommended to apply a seal coating to asphalt every three years. This coating fills any small cracks or holes, preventing water from penetrating under the surface, especially during periods of frost and thaw. However,

before starting that stage of the work, the driveway should be cleaned with a pressure washer, adding some special detergent to the water for a better degreasing action.

If the passing of the seasons has had time to cause damage, any holes and cracks must be repaired. The problem of cracks is easily solved with specially designed asphalt crack-filler. To repair a hole, the surface should first be brushed clean and then washed down with a hose. Fill the hole with asphalt patch, taking care to use a little more than necessary. Heat this with a dual heat gun and then, using a trowel, tamp it down level with the surrounding area. Finally flatten everything with a brick or a piece of wood.

Who said that the kitchen was the no man’s land of the house? This is certainly wrong, particularly now that the kitchen is regaining its place as the heart of a home. It’s especially true since the central island became such a popular item; as practical as it is user-friendly.

Positioned in the heart of the kitchen, the central island brings warmth and beauty to large rooms and an unhoped-for practicality to smaller rooms. A central island is the perfect item to make the most of the kitchen; a focal point around which family and friends can gather.

As far as lay-out is concerned, the island modifies the kitchen’s volume and creates an imaginary separation. What’s more, it can become multifunctional depending on your habits and your mood. It is, therefore,

possible to integrate into the countertop, a sink and a cooktop. However, before choosing any of these options, the available space must be ascertained, as it is impossible to create a central island in a kitchen which has a surface area inferior to 15-20 m2 (160-215 ft2). The reason for this is simple: a space of at least 60 cm (24 in) must be planned on either side of the island to allow adequate room for circulation and up to 120 cm (48 in) of associated space when a dishwasher is incorporated. If a cooking space is planned, it’s recommended to allow 40 cm (15 in) on each side of the cooktop for the removal of hot cooking pots. Once this is said, if the island is used exclusively as a storage unit, 80 cm (30 in) is ample space for good circulation.

As for decorating, it is preferable if the central island blends in with the kitchen cabinets... although if the island is made from some of the newer materials, such as satin lacquer, this nerve centre can adapt to all interior styles, including the most futuristic.

Why choose vinyl? These days, vinyl siding is the largest market segment in the flexible cladding industry. It is an inexpensive material. However, care should be taken when choosing this type of siding as the price can fluctuate depending on quality and thickness.

An insulated vinyl is now available on the market. Depending on the style of the product and the brand, the insulation value can vary from R 3.0 to 4.0. Insulated siding is thicker than traditional vinyl sidings.
