Dear Friends,Greetings St. John Berchmans Community!

And Happy Catholic Schools Week! If you are already part of our school community, you’re probably gearing up for the coming week, full of activities and events meant to celebrate who we are and what we do at SJB! The days ahead include a parent appreciation spaghetti dinner, open house, science fair, 8th grade vs. teachers basketball game, all school service project, pep rally, and teacher and student appreciation lunches. Our activities will certainly celebrate all the “intangibles” that make SJB such a great place to be – the way we connect as a community, our efforts to serve others in need, and how we support one another in big and little ways. I always look forward to this week and all the joy, togetherness and fun it brings!

If you are not yet a part of SJB’s school community, you might be wondering, what exactly is it about SJB that makes it so great? What am I missing and how can I learn more? You might be thinking, why Catholic school? Why St. John Berchmans? And, why now?

As a member of today’s Mass congregation, it’s easy to see that you are already invested in our parish community of faith. Our school is an incredible, wonderful and important extension of our parish faith community! As we work together to make an impact in our neighborhood, city, country and world, our students become an integral part of our mission as Catholics – to walk, talk, live and love as Jesus did. Our teachers are exceptional models, exemplifying for our students in their everyday lives what it means to live a life of faith.

And that’s only the start of the things that make SJB so great! Our students from PK through 8th grade are academically challenged, socially and emotionally supported, and encouraged daily to grow in body and mind. Our 21st century classrooms integrate technology and learning so that students are able to navigate the digital world in positive, productive and engaging ways. Project based learning, STEM initiatives, early literacy, fine arts, differentiation, and accelerated math all come together to create an educational experience for children that activates curiosity, challenges limits and encourages growth in unique and amazing ways!

The question you might still be asking is, why now? What makes this year the best year to apply for admission to SJB? Right now, for the first time EVER in Illinois history, the state is offering TUITION FREE scholarships for students in Catholic schools! This is an unprecedented offer that will open our doors to families who may see the expense of tuition as a barrier to their access to a Catholic education. And we couldn’t be more excited to welcome you!

This Sunday, January 28th, immediately following our 9:45am Family Mass, we will open our doors and classrooms so that you can come in and see for yourself all the wonderful ways our students learn, grow, serve and lead at SJB. Our science fair will be in full swing, teachers will be in their classrooms to answer grade specific questions and parent ambassadors will be available to offer school tours! Lent begins on February 14th. The following is a listing of all of the great events happening at St. John Berchmans. Please mark your calendars to join us as often as possible to make this Lent your most prayerful one yet. More information on each event will be presented in upcoming bulletins.

Bilingual Stations of the Cross will begin at 7pm each Friday during Lent (except March 9th which will be Taizé Prayer Around the Cross,

also beginning at 7pm). On March 23rd, the Junior High will enact the Living Stations.

Please Make Your Gift to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal

“Come, Follow Me”Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.The ACA theme for 2018 is “Come, Follow Me.”Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me.”After our parish goal of $17,389.00 is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs.If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend.

COLLECTING PALMS FOR ASHES

Next Sunday, we will begin collecting old palms so that they can be made into ashes for Ash Wednesday which falls on February 14.

Please bring your old palms to Mass and leave them in the baskets in the vestibule. Begin the holy season of Lent by coming to Mass on St. Valentine’s Day with your loved ones!

¡Y Feliz Semana de Escuelas Católicas! Si ya es parte de nuestra comunidad escolar, probablemente se está preparando para la próxima semana, llena de actividades y eventos destinados para celebrar quiénes somos y qué hacemos en SJB. Los próximos días incluyen una cena de espaguetis de apreciación para los padres, puertas abiertas, la feria de ciencias, el juego de baloncesto de estudiantes del 8º grado contra los maestros, proyecto de servicio escolar, pep rally y almuerzos de apreciación para maestros y estudiantes. Nuestras actividades ciertamente celebrarán todos las cosas “intangibles” que hacen que SJB sea un lugar tan genial: la forma en que nos conectamos como comunidad, nuestros esfuerzos para servir a quienes nos necesitan, la forma en que nos ayudamos unos a otros de forma grande o pequeña. ¡Siempre espero ansiosamente el gozo, la diversión y la unión que esta semana ofrece!

Nuestros estudiantes de PK al 8° grado son desafiados académicamente, reciben apoyo social y emocional, y se les anima a crecer diariamente en cuerpo y mente. El tema de la CCA para 2018 es “Ven, sígueme.” Cada promesa de donativo hace una diferencia, porque todas las parroquias participan en la campaña y los donativos de muchos permiten a nuestra arquidiócesis ofrecer los ministerios y los servicios que son tan necesarios para responder al llamado de Jesús. “Ven, sígueme” Después de alcanzar nuestra meta parroquial de $17,389.00 en efectivo, el 100% de cualquier fondo adicional que se recaude regresará a nuestra parroquia para ayudar a cubrir nuestras necesidades. School NewsSTEM Journey

SJB’s STEM Journey Continues!

During December’s Junior High STEM lab, the students were introduced to a simple version of a drone, which they used to replicate some of the tasks carried out by more advanced unmanned aerial vehicles. They experimented with the drone in a variety of ways and learned about drone safety regulations and flight planning. They planned and executed a race and figured out how to measure velocity and acceleration. It was truly a day filled with inquiry, excitement, and fun!

Look for more information in the upcoming Bulletin regarding January’s Light Lab, where students bent laser beams in order to create a laser maze!!! Want to learn more about experimental learning at SJB - come to the PK-8th grade Science Fair, immediately following the 9:45am Mass on January 28th (11-12pm).
