July 19, 2020 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

BUENAS SEMILLAS Hoy Jesús continua hablando en parábolas con sus segui-dores. ¡Qué rico tesoro nos regalan las tres parábolas sobre el Reino de los cielos! El Reino se parece: a un hombre que siembra buena semilla en su campo, a una semilla de mosta-za y a la levadura que se mezcla en la harina. Al igual que la semana pasada, hoy los discípulos piden que Jesús les inter-prete una de las parábolas –la parábola del hombre que siem-bra buena semilla. Para que no pensemos que estas parábolas son simples anécdotas entretenidas, la interpretación de Jesús debe considerarse como lo que es –una advertencia. Llanto y desesperación esperan a los hijos del maligno. Esta parábola señala la lucha del creyente de hoy. A veces, por el pecado, sembramos cizaña y evitamos que el amor de Cristo florezca. Que el Evangelio de hoy nos ayude a retornar al buen cami-no. Comprometámonos a prepararnos para los días finales, para el tiempo de cosecha, floreciendo como buenas semillas creadas por el amor. GOOD SEEDS Today Jesus continues to speak to his followers using parables. What a rich treasure we are given today in three parables about the kingdom of heaven! The kingdom is lik-ened to a man sowing good seed in his field, a mustard seed, and yeast mixed with flour. As they did last week, today the disciples press Jesus for an interpretation of one of the parables—the parable of the man sowing good seed. Lest we think that these parables are simply amusing little anecdotes, Jesus’ interpretation should be seen for what it is—a warning. Wailing and grinding of teeth in a fiery fur-nace await those who are children of the evil one. This par-able points to the struggle for today’s believer. Sometimes, through sin, we sow weeds and prevent the love of Christ from blossoming. Let today’s Gospel help put us back on track. Let us recommit ourselves to preparing for the last days, the harvest, by blossoming as the good seeds we were created in love to be. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Uno de los pasajes bíblicos más bellos tiene que ser el de Isaías 11:6. El profeta proclama la paz mesiánica como una paz en donde animales voraces como el lobo, el leopar-do, el león y la osa habitarán tranquilamente con animales mansos como el cordero, el cabrito, el ternero y la vaca “y un niño pequeño los conducirá”. Esta es una paz donde la justicia rectifica las desigualdades y pone fin a la violencia. En esta profecía el Cristo es un niño que pastorea el mundo con una eficacia sorprendente. Él hace lo que los gobernan-tes del mundo pretenden hacer pero nunca logran, pone fin a la guerra, la pobreza y el hambre. Por esta razón hay muchas imágenes del Niño Jesús como el Santo Niño de Atocha, el Niño Jesús de Praga, el Divino Niño de Bogotá y el Niño Jesús en manos de san Antonio, entre otros. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the dawn of the fourteenth century, the sacrament of confirmation was ripe for a rescue, since vast numbers of the faithful never received it, and when it was celebrated, it was done so in isolation from baptism and Eucharist. A bishop named William Durandus set out to reclaim this liturgy, but he had a creative touch and added some things into the mix that had never been thought of before. One was a slap. Oddly, he replaced the kiss of peace at the end of confirmation with a slap on the cheek that endured to modern times. This “wake-up call” was related in his imagination to a custom in the military, wherein ceremonies of knighthood and investiture involved a symbolic wound as a sign of willingness to suffer. Within every congregation today there are people who have memories of fretting through their confirmation liturgies, anxious to know how enthusiastic a slap the bishop would be-stow. Durandus loved symbolism and had a reason for every ritual and practice, but his creative spin on the celebration shows how sadly adrift confirmation was from its anchorage in baptism, how far off-course from its home port of the eucharis-tic community. —Rev. SANTA BRÍGIDA DE SUECIA (1303-1373) 23 de julio Brígida fue una persona bendecida por Dios, no sólo porque desde muy pequeña abrigó en su ser el deseo de ser santa, sino porque en su proceso de santi-dad Dios le concedió tener visiones de la Pasión de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo. En estas experiencias místi-cas recibió mensajes de Nuestro Señor, que después transmitió a los líderes de la Iglesia. También fue es-posa y madre, pues aunque se casó muy joven, supo inculcar en sus hijos el amor a la santidad, tanto así que una hija suya, Catalina de Suecia, es venerada co-mo santa. Junto con su esposo Ulf, fueron parte de la corte durante dos años, de hecho, ella podía llegar a ser la reina, pero no se interesó por los puestos o por la vida cómoda, antes bien, vistió con sencillez y mo-tivó a los reyes de Suecia a que fueran santos. Vivió la caridad de una manera profunda con los pobres y en-fermos, pues una vez que enviudó, fundó la Orden Re-ligiosa del Santísimo Redentor, dedicándose de entero a la caridad con los necesitados. —Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. SAINT SHARBEL MAKHLŪF (1828-1898) July 24 The convenience store owner chatted animatedly in Arabic with coworkers, but hardly at all with his Ameri-can clientele. So soon after 9/11, he probably figured, with my accent, the less said, the better. That changed when an American customer recognized Saint Sharbel’s portrait on the wall: “So you’re Lebanese Maronites!” The owner was happily incredulous: “You know our saint?” “Not at first,” the customer admitted. “But we help the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, and their magazine published that picture and called Sharbel the ‘Paradoxical Artisan of Peace.’ ” “Everyone thinks we’re Muslims,” said the owner, “and some of my workers are. Saint Sharbel helps us live together in peace!” A hermit for twenty-three years, little is known of Sharbel’s life. He died after suffering a stroke while celebrating the liturgy. Miracles attributed to his intercession number in the thousands, and in war-torn Lebanon, Catholics, Ortho-dox, and Muslims pray together where his incorrupt body is entombed.
