Jin Shin Jyutsu for All Beings

A New class starting in 2015 By Jed Schwartz

After twenty years of teaching and continuing to expand my own understanding and knowledge of the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu, I recognized that there was a part missing in the material that I present in our 5-Day Basic Seminar. Although I speak briefly about working on animals, the seminar is primarily geared toward working with humans; it does not really cover how our practice can be adapted toward other species, even as many students ask what they can do to help their pets and other animals they may encounter. In my personal practice, I occasionally work with animals, dogs in particular. And my clients often ask how to help their nonhuman companions that don’t come to my office. It is wonderful that Adele Leas has written Jin Shin Jyutsu for Your Animal Companion to fill part of this void.

When I was young, I thought I would become a veterinarian. As a high school student, I worked at an animal hospital where I stayed overnight and took care of the sick animals and attended to the ones who were kenneled there. Because of my love for animals, I am interested in how we can help all beings with Jin Shin Jyutsu, both human and nonhuman.

During my first nine years of studying Jin Shin Jyutsu, I took many classes with Mary Burmeister. Since then, I have attended different classes with other members of the Jin Shin Jyutsu faculty, as a student and subsequently as a colleague after I became a member of the faculty almost 20 years ago. Each class provided me with a new frame of reference and enhanced my own grasp and knowledge of the Art.

In our Basic Seminar, we do not take the time to work on other species. During classes with Mary, when asked by students, she would describe how to work with the spine when treating pets. I remember her speaking about holding a bird that was injured and working her hands along the Main Central Vertical line to bring it back to harmony. She would often mention her and Pat Meador’s client who brought a Poodle in for weekly sessions at the office.

I read Adele’s book when it came out, but I did not take one of her classes until last September 2013. I attended her class in Destin, Florida, in order

to experience how she teaches people to work with Jin Shin Jyutsu on animals and to work with the diverse species at the Alaqua Animal Refuge. Adele teaches Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help from Mary’s Self-Help Books 1, 2, and 3 throughout the 4-day class. The morning sessions are devoted entirely to students practicing self-help, as well as learning the simple

concepts of Jin Shin Jyutsu. The training – learning the concepts of Jin Shin Jyutsu and the locations of the Safety Energy Locks – helps prepare students to practice on the animals later in the day. The morning sessions take place at the beach, where everyone lies down on a blanket or towel while Adele guides the group through different flows each day from Self-Help Book 1.

As you can imagine, the class was full of animal lovers, all of whom came to learn how to share Jin Shin Jyutsu with their own pets, so they could have a healthier and longer life. A few of the students had already taken the basic Jin Shin Jyutsu 5-Day Basic Seminar and were now wanting to get more experience working with their own animals. A large percentage of students had never experienced Jin Shin Jyutsu; this was their introduction to Jin Shin Jyutsu.

It is amazing to witness those new to Jin Shin Jyutsu, who have no expectation as to what they will experience. Feeling the harmonizing in their bodies for the first time transforms and surprises them. The realization that we have to know ourselves before we can really help another becomes very clear. To help one’s pets, one must start with one’s self. As the days progressed, new students were asking more and more questions that were deeper than could be explained in this Self-Help oriented program. It was great to see the students who had already taken the 5-day class helping the beginners, during the break time, try to understand some of the concepts from the Basic 5-Day class. I kept a very low profile so that I could see how people were able to process and share the information.

In a 5-Day Basic Seminar, the content of the last two pages of Text 2 is typically covered on the last day. From the students’ stand point, at the end of five days filled with masses of information, it is nearly impossible to focus on and pay enough attention to the instructor. The “hard drive” of our mind seems to have used up every single byte, and this is not made any easier when the title of this new piece of information is as perplexing as LIQUIFIED GRAIN and COMPRESSED OXYGEN.

As a student, I have been through it often enough, and no matter how hard I “struggled” to understand, as the end of the class drew near, the sound of those two expressions seemed to trigger a blocking mechanism which added to stress, making it virtually impossible for me to take in anything else. And my only expectation was that it would all end soon.

As an instructor, after twelve years teaching this class, I have observed very similar reactions in students, usually expressed as a nervous giggle that spreads like wildfire when the “ominous” last pages of the book are announced, or in desolate expressions that seem to silently profess, “I’ll never ever get that.”

However, for worthy representatives of Scorpio like myself, there can be nothing more enticing than solving a puzzle, and so, understanding these last two pages became a personal quest. The very act of looking at these pages as a riddle and approaching it as a challenge helped melt away the blockage, unveiling before my eyes the depth of these pages and the elegant beauty of Mary’s presentation of them.

During nearly all the 5-Day Basic Seminars, we talk about ENERGY that emanates from the Dot, how this ENERGY creates us and how it keeps us alive. As we go deeper in the study of Jin Shin Jyutsu, we understand the concept of Depths and the movement of ENERGY through them. We also study how to use our Jumper Cables to better activate or harmonize the flow of this ENERGY that creates us, protects us and repairs all our body.

When at the end of Text 2 we present the Liquified Grain and Compressed Oxygen, we are talking about something different. We are talking about the energy that our body obtains from the food we eat and from the air we breathe.

This is completely different from the ever-emanating ENERGY from the Dot, transported through the Light and individualized in what we call the Sixth Depth, manifesting first as the Main Central, then as the Supervisors and Mediators, and finally as all the other body functions.

This difference is one of the factors that hinder the understanding of the theme. All through the class we present ENERGY, and now we talk about another energy... a more concrete and dense energy stemming from the transformation of dense objects like food and air, which are equally important for the maintenance of life in our body.

Another disconcerting factor is the expressions coined by Mary to define the energy obtained from the food we eat (liquified grain) and from the air we breathe (compressed oxygen).

Perhaps if she had given page 60 of Text 2 the title: Ingested Food Function Energy and Breathed Air Function Energy, rather than: Liquified Grain Function Energy and Compressed Oxygen Function Energy, students might be less unresponsive and more receptive to the information presented.

However, those who have been studying the work presented by Mary for a longer period are fully aware of how carefully she selected every single word of all the books she wrote, including their numerological weight. It was not lightly that she wrote: “Numbers are centers of enormous force and power, each one being a particular focus for specific emanations of God in their evolutionary work with humanity.”

As a reminder of that, let us look at page 2 of Text 1, where she wrote: “3. EXHALE – Unload all dirt, dust and greasy grime.” She carefully selected the words Dirt, Dust, and Greasy Grime, because of these four words, two start with the letter “D” and the other two with the letter “G”, which are, respectively, the fourth and the seventh letters of our alphabet. Therefore: exhale the dirt (4) dust (4) and greasy (7) grime (7), means a lot more than unloading what no longer suits us, but also to exhale from our 4s left and right, down to our 7s left and right (i.e., all through the descending ENERGY to our 7s.)

J I N S H I N J Y U T S U ® N E W S L E T T E R

If we use the same logic for the expressions Liquified Grain and Compressed Oxygen, we obtain the following numerical relationships:

• Liquified Grain – L (12) and G (7) where 12+7=19, simplifying: 1+9=10 and 1+0=1

• Compressed Oxygen – C (3) and O (15) and where 3+15=18, simplifying: 1+8=9

Therefore, Liquified Grain is numerically 1. Safety Energy Lock 1 is movement (the primordial/prime mover), which is exactly the function of the food we eat: to give us the energy required to move. Numerically, Compressed Oxygen is 9, and Safety Energy Lock 9 tells us about the end and the beginning of cycles. This describes very aptly the act of breathing, since every breath is, in itself, a complete cycle. Lastly, the combination of Liquified Grain (1) and Compressed Oxygen (9) results in 10, and the Safety Energy Lock of this number is exactly: “the overflowing and unlimited life power”.

The beauty of “playing with numbers and words” leads us to discover wonderful “coincidences” like the one demonstrated by Siew Kim, the student who dedicated herself to taking JSJ to Singapore over a decade ago and has since been working untiringly to publicize it. She showed me that the Chinese word for ENERGY is 氣 (chi), and this word is the combination of two simpler ideograms: 气 which means breathing (compressed oxygen) and 米 which means grain (liquified grain). And in Chinese numerology each ideogram has a numerical value equivalent to the number of individual traces required to write it. In the case of 氣 (chi), specifically, it is 10. The same 10 we found using our alphabet.

The Main Central flow is the first expression of the ENERGY in our body, and it has a connection with the number 10, too, considering this flow is presented in 10 steps on page 37 of Text 1 and the number of the page coincidently shows us again to 10 (3+7=10). This leads to the conclusion that, at a philosophical level, both the ENERGY and the denser energy obtained from the food we eat and the air we breathe converge to the same thing when we consider the numerical value, which is the same (10). This is confirmed in the last paragraph of Text 2, when it states that this denser energy called Liquified Grain and Compressed Oxygen,

after combining at the tip of the middle toes, “...ascends through the center of abdomen, chest, throat and up to top of head (This intermingles with all Combined Energy of All the Functions)”. The Combined Energy of All the Functions is nothing other than the subtle ENERGY that emanated from the Dot.

Moving from physio-philosophy to the dimensions of physio-psychology and physio-physiology, we conclude that some areas of our body are quite relevant when we study both the Liquified Grain Function Energy and the Compressed Oxygen Function Energy, because they have several common areas.

Common areas for LG and CO:

• Center of Sternum: in this area we find the beginning of the LG function energy and the end of the CO;

• An inch below the navel: in this area is the beginning of the CO function energy and the end of LG;

• Tip of the middle toes: this is where the two functions combine;

• Top of head: in this area part of the combined energy LG and CO intermingles with All Combined Energy of All the Functions;

• Sides of the spine: it is along the sides of the whole spine that both functions flow, differing only in direction: the Liquified Grain Function Energy flows down (the opposite movement that both follow when moving on the front of the body).

• Area of the gullet: this is the area where the conflict generated by the imbalance between the energy of the two functions occurs, and where the effect of such imbalance is often felt.

According to page 60 of Text 2, the Umbilicus and Kidney Function Energy are very important for the LG and CO function energy, because they control the circulation pattern of both. I would like to point out that the text says Suprarenal Gland Function Energy, and the 1979 version describes the Auxiliary Kidney Flow, but I believe (in my limited understanding) that they refer to the Kidney Function Energy, or at least to part of this function’s circulation pattern.

Based on the content of this page, we can say that to help restore the balance of the energy of these two functions (LG and CO), we can resort to either the Umbilicus or the Kidney function.

The Umbilicus Function Energy, among its many qualities, helps harmonize any kind of relationship. Since we are dealing with the relationship between the Liquified Grain Function Energy and the Compressed Oxygen Function Energy, this harmonizing quality of the Umbilicus function is not only necessary, but always very welcome.

The Kidney Function Energy also plays a very important role in this. So much so, that page 39 of Text 2 describes how the imbalance between LG and CO affects the body and the very flow of energy through the circulation pattern of the Kidney Function, making it separate and overflow. Important to remember that the Kidney Function, as a toe flow, has the quality of activating the required energy to keep life in the body.

The importance of the two other toe flows, Spleen and Liver, are clearly presented in the last page of Text 2 because, in brief, the first paragraph states that it is thanks to the Liver function that the air we breathe becomes the Compressed Oxygen function energy, and the second paragraph demonstrates that the Spleen function is responsible for transforming the food we eat into the Liquified Grain function energy.

When we follow the circulation pattern of the Spleen function we notice something very interesting: the right flow (illustrated on page 17) starts its circulation on the

medial side of the right big toe nail and goes up towards the area of the Spleen organ. The left flow starts in the left big toe and goes up to where the Liver organ is. Something similar happens with the Liver Function (page 35, Text 2): the left flow starts its circulation on the medial side of the left big toe and goes up to the area of the Liver where it becomes Lung function. The right flow starts on the right big toe and goes up to the Spleen area, where it also becomes Lung function. Therefore, either of these flows (Spleen or Liver), irrespective of the side chosen, will start in the same area and will flow towards the same organ (Spleen or Liver), thus revealing a very deep connection. Lastly, the other toe flow we mentioned earlier, the Kidney flow, irrespective of the side (whether right or left), goes through both organs (Spleen and Liver) and through the opposite Kidney organ.

All this leads to the conclusion that to help balance the Liquified Grain function energy and the Compressed Oxygen function energy, we can resort to the Umbilicus flow as well as to all the toe flows (Spleen, Liver and Kidney). Listening to the pulses will tell which will be more effective in each individual case.

When teaching JSJ classes, Mary Burmeister used to say: “Simplify, simplify, simplify, know (help) myself is to simplify.” To honor this great teaching, I would like to finish by suggesting an extremely simple procedure to help harmonize the Liquified Gain function and the Compressed Oxygen function: hold the tips of the middle toes (because in their tips the energy of these two functions combines to bring warmth and harmony to all relationships).

“Liquified Grain...” cont’d. from page 5

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

The holidays are always such a wonderful opportunity to honor the spirit of giving, and we hope you will consider making a tax deductible donation to The Outreach. Please help us provide the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu to those who desire the education but otherwise cannot afford to become practitioners. Through the generosity and efforts of many we can continue to see that the global grass roots movement that Mary ignited will continue to grow for many generations to follow.

Happy Holiday Season!

It was clear to me the difference between those who had taken a 5-Day class and those just being introduced to Jin Shin Jyutsu. Those who were feeling the Self-Help for the very first time were amazed at how different their bodies felt. They had come not for themselves but for their pets, but they gained so much from it for themselves. It brought to mind that I came to my first 5-Day with Mary in 1981 to learn Jin Shin Jyutsu so I could help my patients in the Children’s Hospital where I was working. At the time, I also had no idea the power of Jin Shin Jyutsu and that I was the one that needed to receive it. As the days progressed, I began to daydream about having a class that allowed people to be able to practice Jin Shin Jyutsu on all beings, humans and nonhumans alike.

After the morning sessions, we reconvened at the Alaqua Animal Refuge. This is a truly beautiful facility with a greater variety of species than I ever imagined. Most notable was the loving dedication that the staff had for these animals. Their compassion and tender loving care was inspiring. How the animals respond to this attention was so healing after so many had experienced abuse and negligence from their former human owners. It is amazing to see NO attitude or resentment from the animals toward those caring for them, even though humans were the very same species that caused them harm. I saw the gratitude and respect that the staff had for Adele and Jin Shin Jyutsu. The staff was able to see firsthand the impact Jin Shin Jyutsu had on their animal residents to help them heal quickly from their physical and emotional wounds.

I have never touched so many different species at any one time – cows, horses, donkeys, pigs, goats, dogs, cats and chickens. What this opportunity allowed me to experience is how the flow of energy is the same yet different. Feeling the energy stream through each of these different anatomies and body types gave me a deeper understanding of how we are all basically the same. I was reminded by Mary and Kato Sensei’s stories of how Jiro Murai early on in his research would purchase the heads of recently slaughtered cows. He would observe the life force and flow of energy as it began to recede from the animal. This way he began to understand the pathways of this energy.

When we are in harmony with the Divine Stream of life, we are all One. Watching the faces of each animal as they

experienced Jin Shin Jyutsu was no different than what I see on my clients’ faces. Treating the bull Lover Boy, who was taller and probably ten times my weight, was a humbling moment. Though he was a challenge to reach around, he was no different in his appreciation and transformation than my two-legged clients, except that Lover Boy had no modesty about peeing on my leg, farting and dropping a pile of poop that I needed to avoid while working on him. I have seen countless clients fall asleep while getting Jin Shin Jyutsu on my treatment table, but when Coda, a beautiful golden horse, started yawning and fell asleep standing up, that was a new experience. The opportunity for me to allow my jumper cables to feel not only the Oneness of all life but also the distinctive dignity of each species was transformative. It was at this moment that I envisioned the 5-Day class as an opportunity for students to feel Jin Shin Jyutsu in this way and not just on people. I spoke to Adele about this and we both grew excited about the possibilities.

The class is seven days long: Part One, the first four days, will cover Text 1, and Part Two, the next three days, will cover Text 2. This will give students time to practice with each other as well as on some of the many animal species at the Alaqua Animal Refuge in Destin, Florida. Animals at the Refuge include horses, cows, pigs, donkeys, goats, sheep, chickens, turkeys, dogs, and cats.

This class will focus on how to work with animals and humans in a way that is supportive, caring, and efficient for both practitioner and client. Class includes body reading, appropriate hand positions, and methods to adapt flows to accommodate size or other variables presented by creatures great and small. We will take time to share how it feels and the differences that we encounter.

The Refuge hopes to have opened its new teaching center by then, as well as be able to provide places for students to stay during classes. However, we will not know if they have completed the facility till closer to class time. We will provide information at that time for alternative housing. This class is for anyone interested in Jin Shin Jyutsu and not

Jin Shin Jyutsu for All Beings is a new seminar that combines Mary Burmeister’s Jin Shin Jyutsu 5-Day Basic Seminar with Adele Leas’ class Jin Shin Jyutsu for Your Animal Companion, merging Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy for humans and for animals into a single seminar for all beings.

With this new class, students will be able to practice on all kinds of bodies and different species – to learn to feel how to engage with Beings who do not use our verbal language, for students to open their intuitive mind to feel where there is congestion on different bodies, to truly get beyond the dependence on having your client tell you what they need or why they have come for a session.

just the animal lover. It will provide a greater diversity of practical experience, which can enhance the awareness and understanding of those who exclusively treat humans.

Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc., will count this class as attendance at one Jin Shin Jyutsu 5-Day Basic Seminar, with the two additional days counted as attendance at a Special Topic Class. It will also count as one class credit towards the Jin Shin Jyutsu for Your Animal Companion Certification Program that was established by Adele and which is recognized by many animal sanctuaries and refuges. This past July 9-13, 2014, we welcomed Philomena Dooley to Louisville, KY to teach what was an amazing five-day seminar! She was accompanied by her husband Roger Stevens and many dear friends including Susanne Carigo and Joanie Millspaugh. In total we had 73 students and 25 new students.

Students attended from Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Virginia, New Jersey, North Carolina, Michigan, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Maryland and California.

Over the course of the five days, we celebrated and honored Philomena’s thirty-plus-year career as a Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioner and instructor. Students brought food, gifts and tokens of their appreciation. We could feel the presences of

Mary Burmeister, Master Jiro Murai and the recently departed Haruki Kato Sensei.

It was very important to Philomena that she impart to us the understanding of “As it is above, so it is below.”

Philomena shared with us so many stories from over the years about the use of Jin Shin Jyutsu in critical situations and with children.

At the end of the five days Philomena received not one but two standing ovations from all of the students in the class. Debora Williams presented her with a signed photograph from all of the students who attended the class. We are eternally grateful that Philomena came to Kentucky to share her knowledge, stories and wisdom with all of us. Who really knows what tomorrow holds?

Wishing Philomena health, happiness and long life so she may continue to share her wisdom with all of us, I am reminded of Mary’s wise words and simple truth:

“In this moment we are forever new.”

Philomena arrived several days prior to the Louisville 5-Day class to make a few special visits to help bring more awareness to the integrative programs that are developing in Kentucky in both Lexington and Louisville.

Jennifer Bradley’s Integrative Program atThe Markey Cancer Center, Lexington, Kentucky

Submitted by Jennifer Bradley and Kelly Mount

Philomena and Kelly toured the integrative program that Jennifer Bradley has established at The Markey Cancer Center, which is affiliated with the University of Kentucky. We began by meeting Jennifer at Markey in her private treatment room where patients receive Jin Shin Jyutsu sessions free of charge. Jennifer presented us with folders containing Markey’s informational Jin Shin Jyutsu brochures, which each patient receives in their new patient folder and are displayed throughout the hospital and clinic areas, self-help pamphlets for the fingers and attitudes, Main Central and assistance with the immune system, plus links to Markey’s Jin Shin Jyutsu informational and self-help videos which are available through the Markey website and a dedicated YouTube channel for the program (http://tinyurl.com/l97wza3).

Our first meeting was with Dr. Edward Romond, a breast cancer oncologist and reknowned researcher in that area. Dr. Romond noted the difference between testimonials made by individuals and the value of research to determine if a cancer treatment result is unique to an individual or possible over a wider group of individuals. Dr. Romond stated that because he hears so many positive testimonials from all the patients he sends for Jin Shin Jyutsu, he feels

that the positive results are not a unique occurrence and encouraged research involving Jin Shin Jyutsu in terms of quality of life improvements.

We next met with Dr. Mark Evers, Markey’s Chief of Oncology & Surgery as well as Director of the facility and Mr. Dave Gosky, Markey’s Chief Financial Officer. Dr. Evers and Mr. Gosky spoke about the positive impact the Jin Shin Jyutsu program has had at Markey and the move toward a larger integrative medicine program at the facility.

L. to R.: Dave Gosky, Philomena, Dr. Mark Evers, Jennifer Bradley

We then had a full tour of the facility including Radiation Medicine, Hematology, and the Chemotherapy Outpatient Clinic. In total we met with four of the many oncologists who directly refer patients to the Jin Shin Jyutsu program. All of the doctors noticed improvements with their patients from the reduction of stress and anxiety, decrease in pain & discomfort during chemotherapy & radiation treatments, and the lessening in patients’ need for pain medication. In the Chemotherapy Clinic we spoke with and observed Karen Thomas and Terry Caudill, two of four JSJ volunteers who give JSJ sessions as the patients received chemotherapy. The nursing staff in the chemo area noted that Jin Shin Jyutsu “makes our job so much easier” as patients are more relaxed and comfortable during treatments. They also noted the use of JSJ self-help in their nursing support group meetings as a way to reduce their personal stress.

Our final stop on the Markey tour was to meet with social workers in the Psych-Oncology area, which regularly refers patients for Jin Shin Jyutsu who are under extreme emotional stress. We also viewed the conference room area where monthly Jin Shin Jyutsu self-help classes are given for patients, caregivers and all interested University of Kentucky Health Care staff.

After a very brief break, we moved to the main University of Kentucky Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We met with Dr. Lori Shook who oversees the program for addicted infants where Jennifer has volunteered her JSJ services. Dr. Shook noted the significant changes that have been observed in the babies who have received Jin Shin Jyutsu. She will be applying for NIH funding this fall to scientifically study the results of JSJ treatments on this infant population that is ever increasing across the country. Philomena agreed to assist in the development of the JSJ protocol for this research which, if funded, will begin in the spring of 2015.

Chery Plain’s Integrative Programs at Kosair Children’s Hospital and Norton’s Hospitals, Louisville, Kentucky

Submitted by Cheryl Plain and Kelly Mount

Philomena also took time to meet with Cheryl Plain who has been instrumental in starting an integrative program at Kosair Children’s Hospital and Norton’s Hospitals in Louisville, KY. Cheryl Plain was diagnosed with polio when she was four years old and spent many years receiving treatments at Kosair’s herself when she was a child. Now as an adult with a fulltime integrative practice of nearly 30 years, which includes Jin Shin Jyutsu, she sees this opportunity as everything coming full circle for her to share with children in our community the joy of receiving complimentary integrative care while undergoing medical care in the hospital.

Cheryl’s dear friend and longtime client, Dr. Mary Fallat, collaborated to offer an integrative program in the hospital which began in 2007 by starting a special fund through her clientele called C. Plain and Friends at the Norton’s Foundation. Dr. Fallat is the Director of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Louisville and is Surgeon and Chief of Kosair Children’s Hospital. This fund was originally established to offer scholarship monies for integrative classes for the nurses and hospital staff. C. Plain and Friends began sending some of the nurses from Kosair to attend Jin Shin Jyutsu classes on scholarship. Since that time nine nurses have been awarded a total of $18,365 in tuition and have taken 33 classes. Through the generosity of C. Plain and friends close to $100,000.00 has been raised to date. Three

nurses have gone on to become practitioners and they are Mary Kemper, Debora Williams and Leah Fredrickson. Debora is the System Educator and is in charge of the all the educational programs for the nurses in all of the Norton’s Hospitals. Together Debora and Cheryl have made several presentations about Jin Shin Jyutsu at the Norton Health & Wellness Center.

Cheryl has also taught self-help classes for continuing education to the nursing staff at Kosair. Thanks to special permission from David Burmeister, posters with images of children utilizing self-help from Fun With Happy Hands are now in the hospital, and the children also receive these images in their exit packages when they leave the hospital.

For Philomena’s class, the Norton’s Foundation paid for four Child Life Therapists to attend the class as new students. Each therapist represented every hospital location from all over the city. The hope is to have nurses, Child Life Therapists, physicians and practitioners all trained in the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu in all of the hospitals affiliated with Norton Hospitals and Kosair Children’s Hospitals.

On Saturday, September 27, 2014, the Louisville, Kentucky, Jin Shin Jyutsu community held their second annual Harmonize-A-Thon, benefiting the Mary Burmeister Jin Shin Jyutsu Outreach (MBJSJO). Last year in 2013 we started coming together to host a JIN SHIN JYUTSU community awareness day where students and practitioners could gather outside of the classroom to share sessions with one another and bring awareness to the community about the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu and about The Outreach.

The 2nd Annual Harmonize-A-Thon in LouisvilleBy Kelly Mount

In the morning we began with hands-on sessions in trinity with students and practitioners. At noon Sheryl Williams presented a free mini self-help class (above) that the general public was invited to attend. Several guests were introduced to the art of JIN SHIN JYUTSU and stayed to receive sessions. Then in the afternoon we exchanged sessions again in trinity.

Since the event was held at the Rock Creek Riding Club, we also invited horse owners to participate by allowing their horses to receive sessions, too. Corrie Brian (photo on right) who is a local JIN SHIN JYUTSU practitioner and certified animal practitioner worked with six horses throughout the course of the day. And their owners made contributions to the MBJSJO!

We had so much fun spending the day together and celebrating the art of JIN SHIN JYUTSU in our community. Everyone who came brought food, and we had a TV set up playing The Art of Living DVD and the Simply Help Myself DVD throughout the day. I also had a table set up with class brochures, information about the art, the new Outreach signs and brochures, and a small bookstore with items like The Touch of Healing and the Safety Energy Lock charts.

We closed the afternoon with a guided meditation led by Cheryl Plain. Mary said, “If you can breathe, you can heal.” And Cheryl spoke to us about the breath as we practiced our 36 harmonizing exhalings and inhalings. It was a beautiful fall afternoon and we raised $1,110 on behalf of the Mary Burmeister Jin Shin Jyutsu Outreach.

My name is Kelly Mount, and I am the class organizer for Louisville, Kentucky, as well as the new director of the Mary Burmeister Jin Shin Jyutsu Outreach. I recently attended the Organizer Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona, and at the request of Susan Schwartz and Cynthia Broshi, I am writing to introduce myself and re-familiarize you with the grant application process.

I know that the grant application process is unclear to some of you, and I just want to review how everything works. The Mary Burmeister Jin Shin Jyutsu Outreach is fiscally sponsored by the United Charitable Programs (UCP) which is a registered 501C3 charity. Whenever I receive a grant application I forward all of the information to Katie Kern at the UCP. We ask that grant applications are sent 4-6 weeks in advance of the class the student is applying for because Katie actually meets with a committee to review the applicants to make sure they meet the criteria for grant approval.

A student may apply for a grant up to their first three five-day classes. After this time they are considered a practitioner and eligible to earn an income to pay for future classes. In addition to the grant application I am required to collect a letter that describes why the student is applying for assistance. An applicant’s current IRS tax filings are also required. In instances where an IRS filing is not available, the UCP will sometimes accept other financial records, bank statements, etc. All of this information including the grant application is available at www.JSJinc.net if you click on the menu button for JSJ Charities. A review student may also apply for the Living The Art class. At this time we do not offer grants for special topic classes or to students who have had more than three five-day classes. If any student contacts me who does not meet the criteria to receive a grant I will always reach out on behalf of the student to the class organizer and the instructor to see if other arrangements can be made. I always find where there is a will there is a way!

During the Organizer Meeting (August 1, 2014), I shared some of the new things I am doing to bring more awareness to the MBJSJO and increase donations. Jody Friday in the Scottsdale office will soon be receiving new materials to distribute to all of the class organizers when she sends their class packages. The first item is a new brochure for The Outreach. The other items are a sign for the organizer to display on their bookstore table with the brochure and a donation collection envelope. Each organizer will receive two envelopes: One that is a collection envelope

with instructions for tax deductible donations and the second is a pre-addressed envelope to me. The collection envelope will fit inside the larger envelope addressed to me. When donations are collected during the class, all the organizer will have to do is put a stamp on the outer envelope and mail it back to me. I hope every class organizer will mention The Outreach when they announce the opening of the bookstore. I cannot be in every class to speak on behalf of the MBJSJO but the awareness can be in every classroom with your help.

I also made a presentation to the organizers during the meeting about my idea for a community awareness day called a Harmonize-A-Thon that benefits the MBJSJO. For any organizer who agrees to host such an event in their community, I will earmark any funds raised to go right back into their respective community in the form of tuition grants!

Thank you to those of you who have generously contributed to The Outreach over the years. In 2014 we have seen a decline in giving, and I hope to encourage you to consider making a donation. The holidays are always such a wonderful opportunity to honor the spirit of giving, and I hope you will consider making a tax deductible donation to The Outreach. Please help us provide the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu to those who desire the education but otherwise cannot afford to become practitioners. Through the generosity and efforts of many we can continue to see that the global grass roots movement that Mary ignited will continue to grow for many generations to follow. Mary always encouraged the spirit of giving with this famous saying “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Thank you for helping me continue to raise awareness about the Mary Burmeister Jin Shin Jyutsu Outreach. Please feel free to contact me anytime if you need assistance with a grant application. With your help I am certain we can assist more students, increase donations and continue to grow our communities.
