Year 11 student Rosa Hook represent JPC at the NZCT Chamber Music competition BOP district round last Monday. Her group Utopian Trio (including Zach Jans and Grace Tak) were the overall winner, they also won the best work by a NZ composer. They will be heading to Auckland this Friday to take part in the next round of competition. Rosa has also been named a finalist in the 2019 Rising Stars Competition being held on the 30th of June. Submitted by parent

The U14's had a weekend off while the 1st XV travelled to TWOM. This is traditionally a big test and TWOM would be looking to make a statement after losing to JPC in the 1st Division final last year.

JPC started well and dominated the first 10 minutes but they could not get over for that try. There was some ferocious defence from TWOM and they managed to keep JPC to just a penalty goal. Another missed penalty goal from out in front hurt JPC as TWOM scored a length of the field try against the run of play. The 1st half ended with

TWOM in front 5 - 3. The discussion at half time was based on belief and want. It appeared that this had not worked as TWOM scored early in the 2nd half to go to a 12 - 3 lead. JPC put their heads down and played to the game plan to eat away at the lead. They continued with the dominance in the tight five and scored by utilising the pick and goes. A highlight of the game was seeing Patrick Gillam showing a good turn of pace and run for 25m to score a try on the left flank. 13 - 12 and JPC looked to be relaying. TWOM looked out on their feet and JPC sped the game up to score another two tries to win 23 -12. Luke Veltman was man of the match with some courageous defence Saturday 22nd June 1st XV Trident v JPC, Midday @ Trident U14's JPC Bye Richard Haigh - Manager 027 7773445

Be consistent and fair in my decisions

Modify your approach to suit the participants level of ability

WHAT’S YOUR ROLE AS A COACH? As a coach you will be required to fill a number of different roles at different times. For example: A teacher … passing on knowledge, teaching new skills. A role model … setting a good example. A motivator … setting challenging but realistic goals, providing positive reinforcement. A scientist … applying sport science principles to the training programme. A counsellor … providing advice, managing conflict. A fair play coach believes and teaches that sport is an activity that develops character and shapes attitudes. Fair play is about playing hard, but playing fair, whether you are coaching, playing, umpiring, or standing on the sidelines. Teach your athletes to accept rules and decisions, and treat umpires, officials and opponents with respect.

JOHN PAUL COLLEGE PARENTS Encourage your child. Respect their efforts. Always be positive. Let them enjoy the game. A child plays sport for their own reasons not yours. Never place undue pressure on a child to perform. Show appreciation to the people who volunteer their time so your child can play sport.

The particular style of taiaha and its focus highlighted the male role as guardian, protector mediator and productive community member while positively role modelling appropriate behaviours for men. The students spent 4 nights and 5 days on Mokoia Island. On the last day they had a Whanau day, where family and friends were invited over to the Island for the students to showcase their taiaha skills and celebrate with a hakari (meal). The boys learnt many skills such as independence, good safety habits, self-discipline and whanaungatanga - which is relationship building through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging. The students are also able to pass on their Taiaha skills to help support the Junior Kapa Haka boys this year.
