A Great Day Out!

Kimbolton School Open DaySaturday 2nd October 2010With small classes and a friendly, caring atmosphere, Kimbolton PreparatorySchool has the feel of a village school yet the facilities and opportunities thatonly a bigger one can offer. Its pupils receive plenty of individual attention buthave enough classmates to develop a wide circle of friends. They cover theNational Curriculum and more besides: modern foreign languages and weekly

swimming lessons from age five, an extensive programme of trips and visits in support of theirclassroom-based learning and a huge range of activities at lunchtimes and after-school.

As children progress through the School, formal sports coaching and inter-school fixtures areintroduced. Music is taught from Reception onwards and individual instrumental lessons from specialistvisiting music teachers are available once a child is ready. There are various ensembles which regularlyform the School’s orchestra for formal and informal concerts. ‘Kim Club’ provides before and after-schoolcare for all ages.

Life at Kimbolton Preparatory School is busy, hugely rewarding and great fun. The academicresults are excellent but the School’s approach is one of balance so that children are stimulated, developed and challenged in many different ways.

Kimbolton Preparatory School caters for children from ages four to eleven. Almost all of themprogress, with their friends, to Kimbolton School for their secondary education where the ethos continues. The Prep and Senior Schools are located at opposite ends of Kimbolton School’s stunning 120-acrecampus which includes extensive parkland and the historic Kimbolton Castle, the former residence of theDukes of Manchester and once home to Queen Katharine of Aragon. FOR KIDS FROM 2 YEARS TO 7TH BIRTHDAY.

Call 05602 609413

A new way to introduce youngsters to the beautiful game has kicked off inPeterborough. Little Kickers provide pre-school children (18 months - 7 years) with a fun, positiveintroduction to football. The programme was developed by FA qualified coaches and nursery teachers with input from childhealth specialists. Each class is run by 2 coaches and enables the children to develop football skills whilstencouraging the development of Early Learning Skills. We feel our classes are different from otherfootball classes because they are specifically tailored to suit the development needs of such youngchildren. It’s probably worth reiterating that Little Kickers isn’t about finding the next generation of Lampards,Gerrards or Rooneys. Our sole goal is to provide an informal, footy-themed environment wherechildren can begin to learn essential, elementary life skills, (confidence, co-ordination, control andcamaraderie) in a friendly, fun-packed, pressure-free environment that stimulates curious youngminds. With our 10,000th child recently signed up and 528 classes sprinkled throughout the country, wetruly believe that in our own small way, we’reproviding a positive introduction to sport andan energetic solution to a morehealth-conscious lifestyle.Classes are run in Peterborough and Stamfordwith more being planned for the region. For more information or to come along for a free taster session please contact the Little Kickershotline on 07976 179899 or visit our website www.littlekickers.co.uk

A JEWELLERY KEEPSAKE OF YOUR LITTLE TREASURESA local woman who dreamed of starting her own business has realised herambition through a chance encounter with a company called Smallprint.

Smallprint creates beautiful pieces of hand crafted jewellery thatcapture children’s (or adult’s!) fingerprints in polished silver keepsakes, including pendants, cufflinks, keyrings and charm bracelets. As well asfingerprint jewellery, we can also create pieces featuring a treasureddrawing, handwriting, or even hand/footprints and paw prints.

Ruth Campbell from Warboys near Huntingdon, mum to Morganand Caitlyn, was made redundant 18 months ago. “I had thought aboutstarting my own business but I just didn’t have the time to do the researchrequired. Then I came across an advert for a franchise opportunity so Iemailed that day and the rest, as they say is history, six months later I wason my training, and now I have my own business.”

Each piece of jewellery is hand made by Ruth using a productcalled precious metal clay. Your child’s fingerprint is taken directly into theclay, which when fired becomes the piece of jewellery which means itreally has been “touched by someone you love”.

There are a number of ways that you can have the jewellerymade, either by visiting Ruth at her home, arranging a party with friends orvisiting her stand at a local event. If you are interested in having a piece made from the Smallprint range email Ruth on [email protected] see our advert above for more details.

Television – friend or enemy?Recent research suggests that watching toomuch television can have a serious effect on achild’s development and language skills. A USteam monitored 329 children aged between twomonths and four years over a two-year period. The results, published in 2009, showed thatwhen the TV was on – even if it was only in thebackground – the number of words spoken orsounds made by either child or adult wereconsiderably reduced. Experts have long beenaware of a link betweenlinguistic problems andheavy TV watching inyoung children; in fact, theAmerican Academy ofPaediatrics recommendsno TV at all for the undertwos. However, there’ssome evidence to suggestthat, for children over two,at least, some programmescan actually improvelanguage stills. So what’sbest for your child? The important thing is to beselective, and to thinkabout quality as well asquantity. The best type of viewing isinteractive family viewing, where issues raised ontelevision or DVD can bediscussed. It’s a good way to initiateproblem-solving in older children, and withyounger children, it’s a chance to explain thedifference between fact and fantasy. But itshouldn’t be used as an electronic babysitter, nor should it be used as a substitute for otheractivity. It can however, be a useful startingpoint for imaginative play.

TV Tips Watch with them when possible and discussthe programmes afterwards.

Monitor their viewing to make sure whatthey’re watching is age-appropriate. DVDs/videos may be better – they tend towatch them several times and the repetition ofwords can help with language development. Make rules and stick to them. For example,no TV in bedrooms or during mealtimes.

Encourage them to be selective, choosingwhat to watch and switching off afterwards. Remember they’ll learn by example, so if youhave TV on all the time, that’s what they’llexpect. Plan viewing in advance so you can sort outdisagreements between siblings in plenty oftime. Maybe they could take turns in choosingwhat to watch.
