It’s that time of year when the big yellow thing in the sky hopefully makes an appearance. Fingerscrossed we see more of the sun this summer than we have so far this year!

Like most, I love summer. We can play outdoors and it’s also BBQ and wedding season. Additionally,I’m a summer baby so I usually gather my friends together to celebrate the passing of another year.Having a summer birthday means there’s always more options open to me with the big outdoors athand. When I was growing up however, I seem to remember most birthdays consisted of having friendsaround for pass the parcel, jelly and ice cream! I must be showing my age as it seems there is now aplethora of different party activities to do for all ages and the old fashioned parties I fondly rememberare not as common. It seems today’s mums are always searching for novel party ideas. We thought wewould help you in this quest by having parties as the theme of this issue. Emma explores the differentparty options in our ‘Organising a Child’s Party’ article, we have also compiled a Party Time guide of localparty suppliers which we encourage you to cut out and keep for when it’s time to plan your little one’sparty. Or even better keep this issue as it’s got lots of advertisers in who can provide parties.

To carry on with the party theme Jenny looks at Baby Showers while Heidi looks at childcare at weddingsand other special occasions. You can even win a pottery painting partyfor four at Crafty Monkey in St. Neots so it’s all party, party, party. Wellnot all…

I recently had the pleasure of meeting with the lovely lovely BuckfieldTwins – stars of Grange Hill, Hollyoaks, 2point4 children and Dancing onIce to name a few. Both girls have recently moved to the area and hadbabies so I invited them to Crafty Monkey to have a chat over a bit of ababy prints on pottery session. The girls are great and you can read allabout them on page 8 & 9.

I have also checked out the new Bowling Lanes in St. Ives so read thereview on page 10 and if your child is starting nursery or school inSeptember then enter into our Easy2Name giveaway. That’s not all butI’ll let you turn over the page and see what else is inside…

Parties are a very popular topic of conversation in ourhousehold, especially as in between his ownbirthdays, Gregory will revisit the topic appoximately364 times. His pirate and princess party last year wasa great success and he has maintained ever since thathis wish is to have an identical party with exactly thesame cake. Happily, I still have a few months topersuade him to think outside the box a little.

The problem with parties as far as Gregory’sconcerned is although he loves his own birthdayevent, when he actually attends somebody else’s, hetends to stay in a corner with me and buries his headin my lap for at least half of it until he eventuallyovercomes his ‘party shyness’.

Recently we attended a party at his little friend’shouse. It was a small gathering of children and thebirthday boy’s mum had put on a lovely buffet for thechildren and had arranged for them to play a fewparty games and partake in a spot of dancing. Allperfectly traditional and pleasant activities. Gregoryhowever, true to form, sat in a corner with me anddidn’t want to join in with the disco dancing. It wasonly when he realised that there was potential to wina prize for the minimal effort activity of handling apackage within a circle of children, that he decided tomake an appearance on the carpet. After not winninga prize, he spent the rest of the party on my lap, refusing to join in or eat any party food.

When the birthday boy’s mum came over to ask himif he was staying with mummy because he feeling abit shy or wasn’t hungry, he replied, ‘I’m a bit shy, butreally I don’t like the food because it smells horribleand the party’s really boring.’

I think it’s fairly safe to assume that next year, thisparticular friend might not be inviting Gregory tocelebrate with him...

I recently had the pleasure of meetingthe lovely Buckfield twins at one ofHinchingbrooke Hospital’s Maternityopen days. The twins have recentlymoved to the area, had babies veryclose together and both had emergencyc-sections. I invited the twins to cometo Crafty Monkey to immortilise theirbabies’ prints on pottery and to chatabout new found motherhood amongother things for this issue of Jolly Tots.

Many of you will have grown up seeingboth Clare and Jules in various TVshows such as Grange Hill, Hollyoaks,2point4 Children and Dancing on Ice.Between them, the girls have a long listof other acting parts on TV and intheatre.

The twins who grew up in Hertfordshiretold me that when little they lovedshowing off and started disco dancing

at a young age, winning severalcompetitions. Their acting careersstarted at the age of nine incommercials. It was around this timethat they started to attend Sylvia YoungTheatre School on Saturday morningsuntil Jules and later on, Clare got theirroles in Grange Hill and they went fulltime at the school.

Their lives seemed to follow similarpaths as they went on to win roles indifferent TV series. After their initialseparation when Jules lived in Liverpoolfor her Hollyoaks role, and Clare wastouring the country, they lived togetherfor a further 20 years up until last year. They said that living together workedwell as they have the same tastes inthings and if one was away on tour theother was usually around to keephouse.

It was clear that both girls have beenvery career orientated throughout theirlives however, Jules talked of theserious car crash she had a couple ofyears ago which made her stop andthink about her life. It was then that sheand her husband decided to try for ababy. It didn’t take long for Jules to fallpregnant and it was in fact Clare whopicked up the signs that Jules waspregnant before Jules did!

It wasn’t long after this, that Clare, outof the blue, fell pregnant. While Julesslowed down, studying all thepregnancy books during pregnancy andanything she could get her hands on,Clare was busy working on tour with theVagina Monologues and worked rightup until her eigth month, leaving littletime for preparation. She said that shewas lucky to have landed this part as itinvolved sitting on a stool so it was theperfect role while pregnant!

A year or so ago, Jules decided tomove up to the area to be near hermum who lives in a village near St. Ivesand a month before Jules gave birthClare moved to a nearby village. Thegirls spoke how they love living in thearea and are enjoying going for countrywalks together.

Both had pretty uncomplicatedpregnancies although Jules sufferedwith carpel tunnel and in the last part ofClare’s pregnancy she suffered with abit of fluid retention. Clare said how shetried to go for lots of walks duringpregnancy and even climbed SymondsYat while 7 1/2 months pregnant whiledoing her tour.

What is perhaps remarkable about thebirths of the girls’ babies is that theywere both induced and ended uphaving emergency c-sections after theirbabies’ heart beats suddenly droppedduring labour, with both babies havingtheir umbilical cords wrapped aroundtheir necks. Jules who gave birth firstwas able to provide good support sevenweeks later when Clare went intolabour.

The girls both gave birth atHinchingbrooke Hospital and both havesung the Maternity Unit’s praises. Theyspoke of the new ComplimentaryTherapy Unit for people who are

Basement Lanes at One Leisure,St. Ives, which opened at the endof February 2013, is the newestten pin bowling venue in thearea. I decided to pop down for agame or two with a friend and hischildren to try it out.

Basement Lanes, a modern five lanebowling alley, is a great addition tothe Leisure Centre. Their aim is tomake bowling a fun and socialexperience accessible to all.

As well as being able to book a lanefor you and your family or friends, they also hold exclusive daytimesessions for different groups. Onesession is called Little Pins which aresocial bowling sessions for parentsand under 5s where you will sharebowling games with other mums andtots. These sessions are only £3.50per parent which includes free teaand coffee and bowling for up to twounder 5s.

I hadn’t been bowling for a few yearsso I was quite impressed with someof the features I found here:

Shoe hire or wear your ownShoe hire is included in the price ofyour game. What’s more, they haveVelcro fastenings making it easier forchildren who cannot tie their laces. However, if you are far too fashionconscious, struggle with changing the

children’s shoes or worried you havesmelly socks, you can wear your ownshoes if they meet their requirements.

No complicated screensTo make it quick and simple to getstarted, your dedicated lane hostenters the names on the screen so bythe time you have put your shoeson... you are ready to bowl. I likedthis as you don’t have to try and workout how to type names into thesystem.

Lane serviceThere was no waiting to be served atthe bar avoiding holding up yourfellow bowlers. If you want food ordrinks, your lane host comes andtakes your order and arranges for it tobe served at your lane.

Bumpers with brainsI loved this feature. You basically saywho in the group requires bumpers atthe start and they are thenelectronically preset before you startbowling and the bumpers only appearwhen it is their turn. This was greatas it meant us adults didn’t have toplay with bumpers. They also havethe obligatory ramps for the littleones.

Special MessagesFor birthdays or special occasions, your host can arrange for a birthday

message to be displayed above wherethe pins were – this could be a novelway to propose!

Glow BowlingWe went on a Friday night so did a bitof glow bowling where they turn thelights down low and the pins glow inthe dark.

All in all we had good fun. We werewelcomed by friendly staff who wereonly too willing to help and receivedgood service while there. My onlycomplaint was that I was almost beatby the five year old in our party!

Amy Gold from St. Ives asks:

Help! My child bites other children –what can I do?

If your child is a biter then you may be reassured that at least a quarter ofall children will bite other children. In fact my eldest did his best to devourhis pals. Happily this was a transient phase that caused me immense worryand acute embarrassment for only the few months prior to him turning 2 ¼years old, the age at which he mastered the art of speech. Coincidence?Probably not, for while children can bite for many reasons, the inability toeffectively communicate feelings such as the frustration felt at another childtaking a toy away from them is, I believe, one of two key reasons for biting.

The other key reason is the inability of the biting child to deal with anemotional situation such as not being the first one down the slide or anotherchild sits too close to them. Given the tender age of most biters, typicallybetween two and three years old, perhaps this is understandable.

So it’s important to work out what situations causeyour child to bite – and then you can work out how tostop it. Intervening by removing your child from thescene just as he/she has bared their teeth in readinessto bite will save screams and sore skin. It will also giveyou opportunities to teach your child that biting iswrong and to give him/her an alternative way ofexpressing their displeasure.

Just be aware that negative attention is better than noattention so try to avoid lengthy explanationsand descriptions lest biting is perceived by your childas having its advantages…

Provided this is done consistently then over time thebiting should cease. Finally, remember topraise your child for their “non-biting” behaviour!

A popular topic ofconversation between usmums is children's birthdayparties. Year upon year wefind ourselves racking ourbrains to come up with a morenovel or cost effective partyidea than last year. Even if ourkiddies’ first couple ofbirthdays have been quietaffairs, by the time they’re oldenough to have an opinion, wesoon find out that they arevery much in favour of youhosting a party for them!

Whether you're catering for a smallcircle of close friends or areobliged to invite each one of their45 cousins; there's something tosuit everyone of every age. Youmight relish the thought ofcreating the party magic from startto finish or you may prefer to makeone phone call and have someoneelse do the hard work for you.Read on for some inspiration!

Stay at homeIf the size of your house can easilyaccommodate the number ofattendees (don't forget to includethe parents in your head count)and isn't full of valuable antique

furniture and plush white carpets, then you may consider holdingyour child's party in the comfort ofyour own home. If the activitiesare planned carefully and thecatering is handled well, thenthere's no reason why your partywon't be a roaring success! Manypeople find that if they are hostinga party for a first or secondbirthday, then the stay at homeoption is practical, especially ifthere will be a number of babiesand very small children presentwith mums and dads. It doesn'tmatter if you need to use twoseparate rooms for entertainingand then eating- just as long asyou can fit all children into onespace for party games or

entertainment.

Again, if you're lucky enough tohave a good sized garden, thiscould be an ideal space to

transform into the party arena ifthe birthday is in a warm month.Just ensure that you have a largegazebo or a ‘plan B’ should theweather decide to play tricks onyou!

Hire a hallIf you'd rather have theblackcurrant cordial spilled oversomebody elses wipe-cleanflooring, then a village hall is agreat space for the little tikes totear about in and you don't haveto worry about the weatherholding out. Hiring them isgenerally fairly low cost; but dobook your local one early so thatyou don't miss out as they tend tobe a popular choice, especially atweekends.

Filling your party with fun!So you have your venue in mind, all you need to do now is sort outthe entertainment and food! Themost cost effective option is to doit yourself (with the help of friendsand family of course!). Childrenabsolutely love themed parties asit gives them the opportunity towear fancy dress and take on theroles of their favourite characters.Whether the birthday child loves

pirates, princesses, superheros orpop stars; a theme will not only addto the excitement, but will alsoprovide you with a good base towork each aspect of the partyaround. Shop at party shops, supermarkets and online to find yourthemed decorations, tableware, balloons and cake toppers andresearch or invent some themedparty games. Get your grown up palsto muck in and rustle up a themedbuffet; if you pop your theme into asearch engine, you'll find stacks ofrecipe ideas to satisfy the tummies ofthe little characters!

If after reading those suggestions, you're already exhausted, then whynot hire someone to do all the hardwork for you? There are a range ofchildren's entertainers locally. Fromtraditional clowns and magicians todrama and play entertainers, it'seasy to sit back and let somebodyelse keep the children laughing andhopping around!

Have a look at creative parties whichare not only great fun but will usuallyeliminate the need for party bagfillers as the children take theirpieces home. Hosts can come alongto you with activities such as modelmaking, pottery painting andmaking their own teddies to name afew.

Also have a look at some of the moreunconventional party entertainers asyou might be surprised what youfind! There's a world of weird andwonderful including science expertsto fill your room with bubbly greenpotions or animal handlers to fill yourroom with ugly green reptiles.

If this still leaves you worrying aboutfood, decorations and party bags;then don't. There are plenty ofcompanies locally that will cater foryour every need. And don't forgetthe centrepiece...the cake! If yoursupermarket doesn't have whatyou're looking for then there are ahost of local cake makers that candesign something especially personalfor your child.

Be Hands off! There's nothing more satisfying thanseeing your child beam from ear toear, revelling in the sheer enraptureof his/her dream party...especially ifyou haven't had to lift a fingerbeyond writing the party invites!

Have a think about what kind ofactivity your child would enjoy themost and consider the number ofchildren and age range, then have alook at what's available. There are ahuge choice of venues locally; belowis a taste of what's on offer.

Soft PlayWe're lucky enough to have a rangeof soft play centres in our area. Mostof them offer party packages andadditional extras. Let your childrenrun round and make their own funthen get fed and watered whilst yousit back and let the happiness unfoldaround you!

FarmsCheck out the local farms' partypages as between them, they have ahuge range of fantastically uniqueparties to choose from. From fireengine and tractor rides to discosand equestrian fun- you'll be spoiltfor choice!

Bouncy Castle PartiesAlthough there are many companiesthat will hire bouncy castles to you, ifyou don't have the space or thepatience...throw your party at achosen venue. Many leisure centreshold parties of this nature.

Pottery PaintingA great idea for older pre schoolersto show off their artistic flair! Let apottery painting studio run a partywhere the children can enjoycreating a piece of art that they cantake home and treasure forever.

Bowling PartiesGather a group of pals together andget on down to your local bowling

venue for a few games, some partyfood and goody bags. Most bowlingalleys will provide several excitingparty packages to suit all ages andabilities.

Pizza MakingMany well known pizza restaurants(and other venues) host pizzamaking parties for little ones. A greatidea which incorporates both fun anddinner in one fell swoop!

Party on a BudgetIf you have several parties to pay foreach year, then you may find thatyour purse starts to feel the strain. Achildren's party never has to cost theearth and with a bit of forwardplanning, you can throw a fantasticparty on the cheap.

Firstly, the key to keeping the costdown is to keep the numbers down.Just invite four or five little friends for'birthday tea'. You'll find that you canprovide sandwiches, crisps, fruit, biscuits, squash and a birthday cakefor less than £20 if you shop wisely.

Fill party bags and pass theparcel/musical bumps prizes withtrinkets and treats from pound shopsand supermarkets.

After party games, let the childrenplay with bubbles and dance; you'llfind that the time is filled beautifully(as it generally takes them so long toeat anyway!).

You can make your own birthdaybunting and decorations and finishthe room using low cost colouredballoons.

Whether you spend £20 or £200; aslong as the tots have played, enjoyed treats and had fun then it’sbeen a success!

I was recently a guest at a wedding and witnessed oneparent, in particular, struggling with her two year oldson. During the service I observed the mother (whosehusband was best man) trying to keep her young sonhappy and quiet throughout the ceremony by using herphone, sweets and books. Unfortunately she wasn’table to fully enjoy the ceremony and looked thoroughlystressed by the end!

Outside the stately home the wedding partycongregated for canapés and fizz. Blessed with a lovelyday, the Victorian garden provided a perfect back dropfor the photos and a great hiding place for two yearolds. He hid behind pillars, ran around in the maze, investigated the ponds and rolled down banks. Thepoor mother was dashing in and out of the groundschasing her son and returning him to the safety of thecourtyard. The finale came when the 100 or so guestsgathered for a photo just as the two year old had gonefor tumble in to the lavender bush! He was having awhale of a time, although the same could not be saidfor the mother who hadn’t had the opportunity tosocialise with the other guests during those couple ofhours and ultimately, both mother and son missed thephotos!

During the reception, the lady’s husband was making aspeech, she looked anxious as he stood up and so shequickly began rummaging in her handbag to find thingsto distract her son from causing raucous interruptions. As it turned out the little lad, no doubt exhausted by allof the running around the country park, fell asleep andstayed asleep allowing her to enjoy her meal, althoughthis was short lived and he woke with renewed energy!

So why am I writing about this? Well, if you arethinking that parents can look after their children atyour wedding or party then you are right, they can andwill. Just be prepared for unexpected noise while youare exchanging vows, unpredictable behaviour andabsent guests during the photos, and babbling orsquawking throughout the speeches.

My suggestion would be to have a wedding nanny ortwo to remove the likelihood of the above happening. It is affordable, and I suspect that parents would bemore than happy to contribute to the cost if theopportunity was there. Then they too could enjoy yourspecial day without worry!

You can find wedding and special occasion nanniesthrough specialist childcare agencies. Do an onlinesearch to find a local one and make sure you bookthem well in advance of your special day.

Childcare for thatSpecial Occasion

Have you overlooked the seemingly trivial matter of childcare at your wedding orspecial occasion? If you’re not having children at your wedding, then read no further. If on the other hand you’re having fond thoughts of the parents looking after thechildren or the children amusing themselves, then I urge you to read on.

Baby Showers

Jenny Barrett is an antenatalteacher for the NCT. She

teaches a variety of classes inSt Neots including Relax &

Breathe sessions which are agreat way for mums-to-be torelax – details on her websitewww.mantenatal.com/relaxor use www.nct.org to findNCT classes in your area.

Such parties are most common in theUSA, but interestingly the term ‘BabyShower’ is thought to date back toVictorian times when a bridal showerwould be held before a wedding andgifts for the bride would be put into aparasol and ‘showered’ onto her asshe opened it.

Usually at a Baby Shower, guests bringgifts for the baby of clothing, nappiesand toys. Games are often played - anexample of which might be puttingdifferent types of melted chocolateinto nappies and guests have to guesswhich kind of chocolate is in whichnappy!

If you have a friend who is expectinga baby then here are somesuggestions for a baby shower whichis more focused on the mum to makeher feel really special at this importanttime.

• Organise a pampering party wherethere is an opportunity for themum-to-be to have treatmentssuitable for pregnant mums with herfriends. The guests could be asked to

bring along a gift to ‘pamper’ the mumsuch as some lavender bath oil orsome new pyjamas.

• Ask guests to each bring along abook from their own childhood thatthey would like to pass on to the newbaby. This is a lovely way to pass onpositive memories from their ownchildhood and encourage themum-to-be to think about theenjoyment of sharing books with hernew baby.

• Arrange to take the mum-to-be outfor a meal and ask guests to bringalong promises of food that they willmake for her after the baby is born.Having homemade cake in the housewhen you are likely to have so manyvisitors is a huge plus and a homecooked meal when you are sleepdeprived is probably the mostwelcome gift.

• Organise the party around helpingthe mum-to-be out with jobs thatneed to be done, such as painting thenursery. Or guests could offer a gift oftheir time in some way, perhaps

offering to do some gardening, shopping or housework either beforeor after the baby arrives.

• Co-ordinate each guest to bring asmall gift for the mum to put in herhospital bag, such as some really niceshower gel for that first shower afterthe baby is born or a water spray thatshe can use to keep cool during labour.

These are just a few ideas, I am sureyou might think of others, but I dothink it is a great opportunity forfriends and family to pampermum-to-be, after all there’s plenty oftime to focus on the baby after they’reborn! By Jenny Barrett

Baby Showers are becoming more popular in this country as mums–to-be get together with their femalefriends and family to let their hair down and celebrate the imminent arrival of their new baby.

Boost your child’s IQ withLittle Language Learners! My friend is annoyingly intelligent: he speaks fivelanguages fluently! He started French at nursery, and listened to his Guatemalan granny gabbling inSpanish on their weekly visits to her house. By theage of 14 he had 4 A-grade language GCSEs! Isthere more to this than a knack for languages? Ithink so.

Research shows that between 0-7 years, foreignlanguage acquisition is completely innate. Betterthan that, early exposure develops exceptionalcognitive and communication skills, particularly inareas of reading, writing, comprehension, analytical, communication and social abilities, thishas been proven by better performance in schooland higher scores on IQ tests.

Do you want to help your child soar in later life?Established by a mum of two young boys and anexperienced language teacher, Little LanguageLearners is a fun and innovative programme thatteaches parents and tots Spanish through musicand play.

Get your kids moving withLittle Kickers!

Hundreds of energetic children aged 18 months to 7 years old inthe Cambridgeshire area now take part in Little Kickers, one of thefastest growing children’s sports programme in the UK.

A reason for this huge success is Little Kickers “play not push”approach to football which is a real hit with both parents and kids– as young children get an introduction to sports in a friendlynon-competitive environment.

Classes have now sprung up across Cambridgeshire and includevenues in Cherry Hinton, Cambourne, Impington, Cambridge,Stamford and Peterborough. In these classes football is used toencourage the development of confidence and social skills, as wellas providing a first class grounding in football basics.

All Little Kickers classes are run by FA qualified coaches, ensuringthat appropriate coaching ratios are maintained, but also so thatthe hard-working parent can enjoy a well earned break andsocialise with other like minded parents.

Little Kickers run classes throughout the year so there are nospecified start and end dates. Enrolment starts on the first day ofclasses.
