Teaching your baby to swim could save their lifeSummer’s just around the corner and the combination ofholidays, sunshine, water and children is a seductive, butpotentially lethal, mix. Drowning remains the third highestcause of accidental death among children in the UK, and33% of child drownings occur in or near the home tochildren under six. Moreover, a recent study revealed thatmore under 5s know how to play a computer game thanswim - so it’s vital to get your little one into a pool as soonas you can. With progressive training, even very youngbabies can be taught life saving skills, such as turningonto their backs or swimming to the nearest solid objectfollowing a sudden submersion.Swimming is one of the most complete and beneficialactivities, as well as being one of the few things you cando from birth - as long as the water’s warm enough.Generally, however, babies start swimming at around sixweeks, when their mums feel able to bring them. There’s no need to have taken your baby for theirimmunisations first, but if you have any concerns checkout the NHS Choices website. If your baby was bornpremature, then you should consult your doctorbeforehand – as you should if you have any other medicalconcerns.

Swimming is excellent for stimulating your baby’seating and sleeping patterns. The multi- awardwinning Water Babies course teaches using voicecommands, and learning to respond to these isexcellent for your baby’s mental development.Lessons last half an hour, and although they mightlook very gentle, each provides your baby with acomplete physical work out – exercising andstrengthening lots of muscles they’d never even findon land! It’s also fantastic for strengthening the bond betweenthe two of you. Lots of mums (and dads) find thatbecoming confident in water makes them moreconfident on land. Others say the best thing is findingan activity to do together that they and their babyboth adore. With an emphasis on having fun, lessonsare generally very sociable occasions and often yoursession will extend beyond the pool as you and therest of your class move to the nearest café for coffeeand cake – or an ice-cream in the park - whilst(blissfully) most of your babies doze. For more information on Water Babies classes inBuckden, Colmworth, Caldecote and Cambridge, callDebi Hogston on 01933 651790 or 07814059594,email: [email protected] or visitwww.waterbabies.co.uk.

When we take our little ones toa restaurant, we hope they’llchat pleasantly over the meal, display excellent table mannersand sit politely at the tablewithout complaining thatthey’re bored. But when eatingout is a new experience, it cansometimes be a challenge toget them to even sit still for tenminutes. So how can you makeeating out with your kids anenjoyable and rewardingactivity? Eating at home is obviouslyless formal than eating out, soexplain that we behavedifferently when we’re in arestaurant because dining outis a special occasion where wecan dress up and enjoy nicefood together in attractivesurroundings. Have a practice run at home.Lay the table with a cloth, nicecutlery, candles and flowers, then dim the lights and put onsome soft music. Instead ofone main meal, serve threesmaller courses, soup, perhaps, followed by a maincourse then fruit or ice-cream.You could even pretend to bethe waitress! They’ll love theritual and it’ll get them used tositting at the table for longerthan usual. Make sureeveryone’s on best behaviour –don’t let dad slurp his soup andlaunch his peas across theroom with his fork! Start with child-friendlyestablishments such as pizzarestaurants with waited serviceso they can get used toordering food from a menu and

saying please and thank you tostaff. Next, try family orientatedrestaurants such as thepub/steakhouse chains. Beforelong, they’ll be ready for moreformal dining. Chinese, Indianand Italian restaurants oftenwelcome children, but may nothave the same family-friendlyfacilities as the big chains. Young children may get boredso, if the restaurant doesn’talready provide these, takesome colouring or puzzlebooks to keep them occupied, and try not to let the meal dragon for too long. If your kidsare well-behaved and happy, they’ll be a big hit withrestaurant staff and otherdiners!

A taste of what’s on offer: The ‘children’s menu’ oncemeant a choice of sausages orchicken nuggets, but thesedays family-friendly restaurantsoffer increasingly appealingand varied kids menus:

Childrens feet are very so and can be easilymanipulated into a shoe. It is as important asgoing to the denst to have your child’s feetmeasured regularly. It is also important thatthe child has well made shoes from naturalmaterials with enough room for the toes tomove around and grow freely. We have puttogether some frequently asked quesons andanswers for mums and dads.

Q. Why wear shoes?A: The role of a shoe is to protect, and a foot to follow itsshape. The look is of lesser importance that the fact thatthe child’s shoe “cooperates” with a child in allmovements. A shoe needs to adapt to a foot rather thana foot to a shoe. Wearing shoes that are rigid, hard tobend and made of inadequate materials which imitatethe adults’ shoes, is harmful for children’s feet.Inadequate shoes are often too short, too narrow, toolow, too hard and can even have too high heels. Free movement in a shoe enables proper muscleoperation, good blood circulation and proper

development. The cap at the front part of the shoeneeds to be broad and high enough in order to providesufficient spacing for toes. The sole needs to be soft soas to enable flexible walking and also to facilitate thework of the feet muscles.

Q. What shoes should we choose for our child?A: Children’s shoes need to be comfortable andfunctional. The material chosen for the production ofshoes needs to be soft and natural – it should not harmthe child’s foot. The inner material needs to absorbmoistness, while the external material needs to repel it.These requirements are best met by top quality naturalleather. Here at Zebedee we do our best to source theseproducts for your children.

Q.Why do physicians stress the importance ofcorrect shoes?A: Because shoes form an essential part of children’sgarments – they guard the function of feet and enabletheir correct development.

Q. How can we be sure the shoes are the rightsize?A: Research shows that a large number of childrenwear inadequate size shoes. Very often they wear evenup to three sizes smaller shoes than necessary, butsometimes they wear too large shoes. A shoe needs tobe 6mm larger than the foot in it. Children’s feet arevery soft and the bones do not fully form until a child isaround 7 years of age so a small foot can be easily putinto small shoes. Development is of key importance tothe structure of the foot (tendons, bones, muscles) aswell as final formation of feet and acquiring firmness lastuntil the end of the period of growing.

Q. Can a shoe be too tight?=A: Of course! Children of the same age have feet ofdifferent lengths and breadths. The breadth of a shoecreates the same problem as the length of a shoe. Unhindered growth and development of small feetrequire a lot of space. Little feet and toes develop bestwhen children walk on some uneven surface becausethere they have absolute freedom of movement which isnecessary for the correct growth and development. Bystanding, jumping and running without any shoes on,leg muscles are strengthened, and this is a preconditionfor a healthy and tough child’s foot. The foot condition isbest walking barefooted on natural elastic surfaces, such as sand, grass etc. Take your children’s shoes offas much as possible!

Q.When does a child need to be fitted with theirfirst shoes?A: Do not rush to buy your child their first pair of shoes.Little feet are best developed without shoes. Forgetabout all the sales arguments about high, low, protectiveor any other kind of shoes. Your child will learn best towalk, run, and jump without wearing any shoes. I alwaysrecommend that the child can walk the length of the room.

Q. Does the time of buying shoes matter?A: It certainly does. Feet increase by up to 4% duringthe course of the day: they become longer and wider. It

is recommended to try and purchase shoes in theafternoon.

Q. Measuring FeetA: Measuring feet is as important as regular check upsat the dentist. Choosing quality shoes in which yourchild’s toes can move freely in all directions and in a waythat the foot is not tightened. Below is an example ofhow your child’s foot should appear in their shoes. For more information go to:www.zebedeeshoes.co.uk

Almost all parents in the UK (93%)let their young children watchtelevision, according to findings ofa new poll of 1,000 parents ofchildren aged 2-6 years. Contraryto popular belief, seven out of tenparents do not feel guilty aboutallowing their children to watch TV.Of those parents, 42% think TV isa great way for kids to learn butonly 16% always watch with theirkids for ‘bonding time’, with 25%using TV as a ‘babysitter’.The poll was carried out to markthe launch of a new programmefor children of pre-school age –Raa Raa the Noisy Lion – and anew ten point plan for parents onTV Time, devised by experts tomark the Hello campaign, 2011national year of communication. For television to be a valuablelearning opportunity, expertsrecommend that parents co-viewwith their children. This meanswatching programmes that are ageappropriate and specificallydesigned for children with parents

joining in and commenting on theprogramme to spark offconversation and introduce newwords. The findings however highlightthat more than half of parents withpre-schoolers (54%) allow theirchildren to watch ‘adult’programmes with Eastenders,The X Factor and CoronationStreet being voted the mostcommon for parents to co-viewwith their kids. Nearly 78% ofparents’ claim the two hours theirchildren spend watching TV eachday is done alone. 66% of parents don’t know thecharacters or storylines from theshows their kids are watching andwhen parents do co-viewapproximately 20% sit in silencewith their children. Very few (15%)are using TV programmes as a‘conversation starter’ when the TVis turned off. Wendy Lee, spokesperson for theHello campaign with over 25 years

experience working in speech andlanguage therapy says; “Parentsplay a crucial role in supportingtheir children’s communicationdevelopment. This surveyhighlights they are not sufferingfrom ‘guilt overload’ but there areareas where parents would benefitfrom more information and advice.Quality TV programmes like RaaRaa the Noisy Lion can provide agood starting point for face to faceinteraction, conversation and playand we encourage parents to grabthe ‘communication opportunity’ toco-view with their child.“TV can be used as a fantasticopportunity to bring children’sfavourite characters and shows tolife beyond the box as well.Chatting about characters, making up stories and evenacting out adventures can helpparents to develop their child’slanguage and communication.Today, we are publishing a newten point plan for parents withpre-schoolers with simple and funtips to ensure TV time becomestalk time.” The Hello campaign aims tomake children and youngpeople’s communicationdevelopment a national priorityand is championing Raa Raa theNoisy Lion as a quality television

programme designed for 2 - 4 yearolds. The new series exploreschildren’s communication skillsthrough the use of Raa Raa’s 4 Rs– repetition, rhyme, rhythm andretelling. Controller of CBeebies KayBenbow says: “We’re delightedthat Raa Raa and his friends arejoining us on CBeebies and willhelp us continue to encouragechildren to develop theircommunications skills. We werepleased to see the results of thissurvey which supports what we’vealways believed that, usedappropriately; our programmescan aid children’s developmentand learning.” The poll found that only 7% ofparents in the country actually stoptheir children from watching anytelevision. Surprisingly dads aremuch stricter than mums (12% ascompared to 4%). The findingsalso suggest that parents inScotland are much stricter thanparents in Wales (12% ascompared to 3%). Raa Raa’s adventures, narrated byLorraine Kelly, is on CBeebiesevery weekday at 3.30pm and onCBeebies iPlayer. “I’m veryexcited to be involved with thisadorable new show. Raa Raa theNoisy Lion is a hoot,” saysLorraine Kelly. “I love the idea ofmaking learning fun for kids, andas 2011 is the National Year ofCommunication, this series ismore relevant than ever!”

TEN POINT PLAN FORPARENTS WITH

PRE-SCHOOLERS ON TV TIME2011 national year of

communication To help parents plan theirinvolvement:If you let your child watch TV,watch it with them (as much aspossible). It is really important toalways remember that childrenneed quiet time where you turn offbackground noise and have timejust to play. This is really importantfor listening and languagedevelopment. When you do watch programmesmake sure they are at the rightlevel for your child – not toocomplicated or for older children(CBeebies for example is good for2 - 4 year olds).Have fun and encourage yourchild to really engage with theprogramme. Join in with your childif there are familiar songs orrhymes– each episode of Raa RaaThe Noisy Lion includes the 4 R’s(Rhyme, Rhythm, Repetition andRetelling), which provides a goodopportunity for you to participatewith your child.Make TV time ‘communication’time. Briefly comment on what ishappening in a programme tospark off a conversation orhighlight something that ishappening i.e. ‘Look at Raa Raa –he’s hiding’.

Be sure to answer any questionschildren may ask – they mighthave lots! And talk about theprogramme afterwards – which bitthey liked best and why. Tell themwhat you think. Pretend games are fantastic forchildren’s language andcommunication development. Whynot make believe you are in aJungle - make a den with an oldblanket across a couple of chairs, use soft toys as the animals. Youcould even act out one of theadventures from shows like RaaRaa The Noisy Lion that youhave just watched with your childadding in their imagination tocreate a whole new story.Remember not to put pressure onyour children and give them theopportunity to communicate withyou. Get down to their level andgive them time to listen as well astalk. The most important thing forchildren is adults who listen andtalk with them, alongsidestimulating experiences andmaterials that give themopportunities to interact and play.Too much TV can get in the way ofthis, so it is important to try and getthe right balance. For more information, visitwww.raaraathenoisylion.com. If you at all concerned about yourchild’s communicationdevelopment, log on towww.talkingpoint.org.uk. The survey was conducted by
