Stop your child from chokingBabies and young children constantly put thingsin their mouths – it’s one of the ways they learnabout the world. But in children under five, there is a high risk of choking. Marbles, beads, coins and toys with small parts are all possiblecauses of choking, but the majority of chokingaccidents are caused by food. This is partlybecause young childrenhave a very narrowairway. Also, babies andtoddlers are stilllearning how to chewand swallow, and inparticular, how to timethese actions with theirbreathing.

They’re most likely tochoke on foods that aresmall, round, hard orstringy. Some foodsshould be avoidedaltogether, but otherscan be prepared in away that makes themless likely to cause aproblem.

Avoid altogether:

Nuts – especially peanuts, one of the mostcommon causes of choking.Boiled sweets – usually round and hard, they

can easily be swallowed whole, blocking thewindpipe.Popcorn – because this is small with sharp, irregular edges, and is also very dry, it’s acommon cause of choking. Raisins, sultanas – best not given to the undertwos, but fairly safe for older children if soft and

moist, or cooked in cakes orbread.

Prepare carefully:

Hot dogs, sausages – oneof the most commonchoking foods. Cut in twolengthwise and then intobite-size pieces.Apples, pears, carrots, swede – most kids love tosnack on hard fruits andvegetables. Serve choppedinto small pieces, grated orcooked until soft.Celery – remove thestringy outer layer and cutinto small pieces.Green beans – remove thestringy part and make surebeans are properly cooked

and cut up before serving.Peanut butter – can act like cement in thethroat. Spread thinly and serve with a drink.Don’t let them eat it on its own.

StoryBox is ideal for children aged 3 – 6 years. The quality ofthese 52-page magazines is outstanding. When you receive one,you realise what good value they really are. For a start, they lookand feel more like a picture book you’d pay around six poundsfor in a shop. And StoryBox really is ‘more than a book.’ It hasfun magazine content which sits well alongside the full length, beautifully illustrated story. And don’t worry, you won’t bethrowing these magazines away! They will soon become firmfavourites on your child’s bookshelf where they’ll come back tothem again and again.

A regular feature is ‘Wonder with Whizkid’ whichcovers some big questions we’re all curious about, such as ‘Whydon’t the stars fall on us?’ and ‘Why do nettles sting?’ Each topicis presented in an easy to follow format. Whizkid (a cute little

character) navigates you through the answers tothese burning questions.

SamSam is the StoryBox cartoonhero (which can now be found as an animatedcartoon on the TV channel Pop!) Children lovehumour and SamSam provides plenty of it.

Other regulars include another comicstrip ‘Polo,’ a page of poetry, ‘Time for aRhyme’ and ‘Animal World’ which focuses ona different creature every issue, for example, the Komodo Dragon. It gives interesting factsin short, easy to understand sentences, alongside colourful photos.

StoryBox even has games andpuzzles to play too. A gift subscription makes along-lasting and unique gift for any childbecause the excellent content feeds their

growing curiosity about the world and gives them plenty of things to do and learn. When my son went to stay with his grandparents recently, what did he choose to take with

him? His big pile of StoryBox magazines!

For more details about how to subscribe for a year (tenissues) go to www.bayard-magazines.co.uk. Prices for theUK are £39.00 for one year (only £3.90 per issue) or£49.50 if you would also like to receive a CD every twomonths. Payment by Direct Debit is £9.75 per quarter.

by Susan Elliot-WrightWhen you’re pregnant andspending every lunch hourwandering dewy-eyed aroundbaby departments packed withgorgeous things, it’s easy to seehow you can spend a fortuneeven before your baby is born, never mind the cost of the firstyear. But it is possible to kit yourbaby out without breaking thebank. Here’s how:

Talk to othermums about what itemsthey found most useful, andwhat just stayed in thecupboard. For example, youprobably don’t need a cribas well as a cot. And whilea Moses basket might bevery pretty as well as beinguseful for transporting yourbaby, a good car seat –which is essential – willprobably do just as well.

Before you shellout a fortune on the latestcot or high-tech buggy, consider buyingsecond-hand. Ebay willprobably be your firstoption, but don’t forget thelocal paper, cards in thenewsagent’s window and ofcourse car boot sales. Youcan often find these items,as well as highchairs, playpens and so on, inexcellent condition for much lessthan you’d pay in the shops. Some National Childbirth Trust(NCT) groups organise sales ofnearly new baby equipment –and they’re a great place to meetother mums and swapinformation and experience. Youcan order an information packonline. Visit their website atwww.nctpregnancyandbabycare.org.When it comes to buying a carseat, though, you should always

buy new. The Royal Society forthe Prevention of Accidents(RoSPA) warns thata second-hand car seat may notcomply with current safetystandards, or may even havebeen involved in an accident (notall damage will show), so it’s justnot worth taking a chance. Formore car safety advice, visit

www.rospa.comIf you’re only going to

use something once or twice - atravel cot, for example – do youreally need to buy one, or couldyou borrow from a friend.

If you’re buying new, shop around. Prices varyenormously and you can makegood savings by simply spendingthe morning on the internet orsearching through variouscatalogues to compare prices.

There are hundreds ofbaby books and manuals on themarket – borrow from the libraryor from friends rather thanbuying new. And check out allthose baby magazines youbought while you were pregnant- they may well contain theinformation you’re looking for.

For clothes, go to carboot sales. Babies grow out ofthings so quickly that it’s easyto pick up good quality clothesthat have only been worn onceor twice. Boot sales are alsogreat for baby baths, fireguards, changing tables, slings, highchairs, playpens, toys, etc.Invest in a blender so you canmake your own healthybabyfood and freeze it.

Using real terrynappies can work out cheaperthan using disposables, especially if you can use themagain for your next baby.

Shepreth Wildlife Parkis going tiger crazy in 2010With the opening of their brandnew Ringo’s Play Barn, staff atShepreth will be making the mostof its function room for the animalparties planned for the yearahead. As well as the award winning‘Tiger Day’ on 4th August,Shepreth Wildlife Park will also behosting a series of fun filledevents, including the opening of‘Bunny City’ and their traditionalfour-day Easter egg hunt over theEaster weekend, lots of primatefun and games at the annual

Lemur Funday on 3rd June andthe ‘Tiger swimathon’ in theAutumn. The animal fun doesn’t stopthere either, with an influx ofnew arrivals set to explore theirnew surroundings at the wildlifepark, including Azara’s agouti, who will be joining theRed-bellied tamarins on MonkeyIsland, along with four Littleegrets making friends in thenew ibis exhibit, and a malesnowy owl to pair up with theresident female. But by far themost exciting news this Spring isthe expansion of the SheprethWildlife Park ‘Polecat BreedingProgramme’ in the NativeSpecies Wood. After thesuccessful release of last yearskits back into the wild, a newbreeding pair has just joined theprogramme, extending theproject throughout four of thepark’s existing enclosures. Thekeepers at Shepreth now waitin anticipation for lots morebabies this summer!

Finally, Animal Manager, RebeccaWillers, will be swimming her12km tiger swimathon on 8thSeptember, in preparation for thebig Channel attempt in 2011, all inaid of saving tigers in the wild.So there couldn’t be a better timeto visit Shepreth Wildlife Park, especially with the recent launchof their cost-saving ‘SeasonTickets’, re-vamped AdoptionPackages and extended AnimalExperience portfolio, all availablefrom their information packedwebsite at:www.sheprethwildlifepark.co.uk.
