Swimming with your baby.Sounds lovely. And it is.In fact, it’s more than lovely. It’s one of themost memorable, thrilling and bondingthings the two of you will ever do.But, along with the fun and developmentalaspects, there’s a lot of technical stuff toconsider. And that’s where we come in: WaterBabies, the UK’s leading baby swimschool. We’ve got the wealth of knowledge anddesire to ensure you’ll experiencesomething truly extraordinary. This is oneof the most magical times in your life, andwe hope to enhance it for you.Extraordinary instructors:them to train. More than 50 hours in the pool; at least 25 assessed lessons; internal and external exams. There’s a lot to do.And that’s why we’re proud to call them world-class professionals. (Although, incidentally, many are alsoex-doctors, psychologists, international sportsmen, lawyers and teachers too).Who’d have thought that how a baby is held in the water will influence their future swimming position? But it will. And how do you interpret the range of subtle signs your baby will use to communicate their feelings in the pool? It’s all this, and so much more, that our instructors are trained to show you.Extraordinary programme:start watching a film half way through? There’s a reason why our courses have a beginning, middle and carefully monitored progression. Becauseonly then can your baby benefit from the meticulouslyconstructed building blocks that will see them swimmingby around thirty months. We have an individual lessonplan for every week of the course (190 in total). That’s alot of technical preparation.Leading us to win four national awards – the first babyswimming company to do so.Extraordinary Results: have saved themselves from drowning in the past 24months. Utterly fantastic; especially when you considerthat three of them were only two. Or watch a bunch ofthree year olds launching into the pool, glorying in theconfidence they enjoy in water. Not so dramatic - butequally inspiring.Water Babies is the baby swimming company mostrecommended by parents to other parents. When we’re exasperated withour children, we cansometimes say things withoutthinking, and if we’re notcareful, we can confuse avery young child. Try to bedirect, and remember thatyoung children don’t reallyunderstand subtlety orsarcasm. Here are just a fewof the daft things wesometimes say to our kids:

1. Don’t answer back

How else can he answer, other than ‘back’? What youprobably mean is: ‘I want toyou to understand and act on

what I’ve said withoutcomment.’ Depending onwhat your child actually saidin response, try simply, ‘Ithink that comment wasrude/unnecessary.’

2. What’s the magic word?

Plenty of mums have usedthis one, only to receive theinnocent answer, ‘is itabracadabra?’ Obviously, ifyou say this often enough, they’ll understand what youmean. But it is sarcastic, andif you use sarcasm, they will, too. Why not just explain thatit’s polite to say ‘please’

when they’re asking forsomething? Once they knowthis, you’ll just need toremind them with awhispered, ‘you forgot to sayplease.’

3. Do you want a smack?

This is confusing for a youngchild and he’ll innocently say‘no’. You probably mean, ‘Ican’t believe you’re stillbehaving in this way eventhough I’ve told you to stop.’Smacking really doesn’t helpand many people feel itshould be made illegal. Ifyour child’s behaviour needs

15

attention, try simply tellinghim what will happen if hepersists, for example, ‘If youpush your sister off the swingagain, we’ll go home’. Andthen be prepared to carry itout!

4. Why don’t you grow up?

This is doubly daft becausefirstly, if they could, theyprobably would, and secondly, when they do grow up, you’llprobably wish they were stilllittle! You’re likely to say thiswhen you’re exhausted andtheir behaviour is getting onyour nerves. By telling themto grow up, you’ll end upmaking them feel foolish andhumiliated. Instead, addressthe specific behaviour that’smaking you angry. Tell yourchild why what he’s doing isnot appropriate, what youwant him to do instead, andwhat will happen if hecontinues to misbehave.

5. These are the happiestdays of your life

Childhood may seem idyllic toadults worrying about how topay the bills or whether the carwill pass its MOT. Butchildren have problems too,and these can be just asworrying, keeping them awakeat night and making themnervous or unhappy during theday. Try to get your child totalk about what it is that’sworrying him – it might be

something you can help with.Or it may be something hefeels he has little control overbecause of his age. Tell himthat you know that being achild can be difficult. Explainthat we all feel worried aboutthings occasionally, but wecan learn to deal withproblems, especially if we talkto other people about them.

6. Father Christmas won’tcome / your birthday will becancelled

We all make wild threatsoccasionally – often whenwe’re tired, frustrated, anddesperate! But unless you’reactually going to cancel Santaor the birthday (or cinema orice-skating orother big treat),you’ll make thebehaviour worse, because yourchild will knowthat theboundariesyou’ve setsimply aren’treal. Make alesser threat andfollow it through. For example, notelevision for theevening, nocomputer use, oryou could cancela regular treat, like swimming, the park orhaving a friend totea. If you carryout your threat

initially, you’ll probably neverhave to do it again.

7. Stop playing with yourfood

Is he really ‘playing’, or doeshe just not want to eat? If thisis the case, simply remove itwithout a fuss. If he’s reallyplaying with it – flicking peasacross the table for example -explain that food is for eatingand that it’s bad manners totreat it in this way. Andbeware of telling him off forplaying with his food if youspent the first two years of hislife making each mouthful intoa train or aeroplane!

Sophie's Butterfly Party Sophie runs into the room followed by her friends. They all have butterflies painted on theircheeks. There is a buzz of Ooo’s and Ahh’s as the girls swarm around boxes filled with brightlycoloured beads, silver charms and buttons. Sophie grabs some pliers and snaps them in theair.

“Are we really going to use these?” she asks. “Cool!”Teresa, the designer today, has been a jeweller for over ten years and her status as a qualifiedteacher helps her tutor the girls.

“Sophie loves making things,” her mum says. “And when my friend told me aboutButterfly Party I thought, what a great idea – the girls make a piece of jewellery and decoratecupcakes. Oh, and they have their faces painted too.”The girls are busy happily discussing the progress they’ve made. One little girl puts her pliersdown. She looks sad. Teresa sits down next to her.

“Wow, what beautiful colours you’ve chosen – are you going to put that button there?Give me the pliers. I’ll show you.” They work together then Teresa hands the tool back. Thegirl chooses another bead and smiles as she twists the loop herself.Little girl’s parties are always going to be fun, right? But what about a party where they canlearn something about design principles and basic jewellery-making techniques too? Sophieand her friends had a great time!Enter our competition above and see our ad on page 7 or go to www.butterflyparty.co.ukfor more information.
