(NC)—Are you concerned about paying costly energy bills to keep your home air conditioned during the summer? It is possible to keep your cool without remortgaging your house.

The key is using energy wisely. Here are a few ways to keep your air conditioning equipment running efficiently while reducing your cooling costs.

•Keep grass clippings, leaves and other debris away from your outdoor air conditioning unit. •Keep furniture, carpeting and draperies away from vents and grills in the home. •Change or clean your system filter once a month (depending on the type of filter). •Use a programmable thermostat that allows you to cool your home only when you need to. •Keep west-facing drapes or shades drawn in the afternoon. •In some cases,it may be advisable to keep your furnace fan running to keep air moving. Ceiling fans are even better, because they draw less power. •Consider installing an attic ventilator – pulling

hot air out of your home can keep your home cooler in the summer. •Have your cooling system checked annually. Having a qualified service technician check your equipment will help ensure that your air conditioning works efficiently and will not let you down when the heat is on.

For further advice and for regular service, contact a cooling contractor who is a member of the Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI). HRAI membership tells you that the company has the appropriate licenses to install and service the cooling equipment that they sell.

More information about locating an HRAI member company in your area is available online at www.hrai.ca or by calling 1-877-467-4724 (HRAI).

Today’s modern fireplaces are continually creeping up in the market with slender landscape designs that have ribbons of flame dance across the entire length of the fireplace box. These inspiring new fireplaces have stylized flames that are surrounded by colored glass and shiny metal - which are worlds away from the traditional brick fireplaces of yesteryear. Modern fireplace design is pushing boundaries with radical ideas that incorporate both function and beauty. As the focal point of a room, fireplaces are where people gather, relax and enjoy time together. Today’s contemporary style fireplaces with sleek, vogue designs gather crowds as readily as traditionally-designed fireplaces, except with an artistic allure. They are quickly gaining momentum, resembling something you’d see in a fine art museum, rather than a cabin in the woods. The rules have certainly changed, opening new doors to design.

The classic shape of traditional fireplaces are now getting updates with clever designs that stand out. For example, many European inspired styles are linear in shape, show-casing a panoramic flame pattern. This design trend is similar in proportion to today’s plasma screen TV, theater style. Non-traditional shapes are also a hot item now.

These new fireplaces are also being reconfigured in a vari-ety of sizes so they will fit into the smallest of rooms. With new ethanol-based fireplaces on the market, there is noneed for any elaborate installations.

Options are endless when choosing materials to surround modern fireplaces. Think beyond brick and look at choices like black onyx stone, stainless steel and colorful tile. Even the glass fronts are changing and are now available in a variety of colors. They add a new, modish appearance that is attractive whether the fireplace is turned on or off.Traditional fireplaces rise from the floor, are surrounded by brick or stone and are topped with a mantle.Modern style fireplaces rebel by being placed higher up on the wall, resembling the placement of a piece of art. Fireplaces are also popping up in unique settings like between floor-to-ceiling columns and as focal points for home theatres and entertainment areas.

Contemporary designs use gas technology in new and exciting ways. Frequently, log elements are not used and the fire emerges from below the frame so you see only the flames. These fire features are custom-created to comple-ment the shape of the fireplace frame, creating real fire art that is captivating. There are slender landscape models with ribbons of flame that dance across the entire length of the fireplace box. With all the benefits of a traditional hearth, these mod-ern style fireplaces express your creativity and are, in essence, functional pieces of art. Whether you want a por-trait fireplace in your living room, a small square option for your bedroom, or a see-through model between the kitchen and dining room, you can find the perfect fireplace for every location.

The average human body contains enough potassium to fire a toy cannon, phosphorus to make 2,200 match heads, carbon to make 900 pencils, fat to make 7 bars of soap or 75 candles, iron (0.01% of body mass) to make a 7.5 cm nail, water (70% of your body) to fill a ten-gallon tank, and enough sulphur to kill all fleas on an average dog. Sulphur is necessary for the production of keratin, a protein that promotes healthy hair and skin. You can calculate how much sulphur your body contains at WebElements. Of the 117 known elements, 24 are found in the human body, making up about 5% of your body - half of that is calcium. A combination of elements make up minerals. Home Office Design can offer everything from a computer desk to space saving ideas for smaller spaces. With a wide range of finishes there will be furniture to fit in with your existing decor to suit your budget.

Choosing the best room to situate a home office also depends on your type of home business. If your activities require daytime phone calls operating in the same time zone you can easily operate from the living or a dining room; unless you have children. Hen you will need a room that is set away from the noise.

Organization of office space is far more than merely desks, files and equipment. It is also how the organization complements the type of business and office purpose. You can create a home office as pleasing to the eye as it is practical.

Custom lighting, window treatments and floor mats add the finishing touches to a great workplace. Custom home office furniture means that you are not limited to pre-fab dimensions or colors you don’t want. There is a wide range of colors and finishes of melamines, laminates and veneers.

The lighting should be adequate for your particular vision. So; be sure to have enough light to see what you are viewing. Also; keep looking away from the computer now and again to give your eyes the

necessary rest they need. And; use a wrist rest for the keyboard to help prevent carpal tunnel. Of course; most new keyboards already have wrist rests attached.

Be creative a build a unit with two bookcases and attach a desk top in-between or use a free-standing desk. Use bi-fold doors, a folding screen or drapery panels to conceal the desk area. Built-ins may be too expensive, and computer armoires won’t be a good investment because they usually don’t contain enough work surface. A modular office-furniture system, which typically includes desks, computer tables, bookshelves, and file cabinets, is the most affordable option.

Glass and ceramic jars work well for pens and pencils. For personal papers, mail, stationery and magazines, use magazine holders in a color that ties in with the surrounding decor. Add pictures or business posers to the walls so he office area doesn’t appear to stark and un-inviting.

Look in your garage to see if there’s an underutilized area to store extra supplies. Low cost copiers and fax machines, sometimes integrated into an all in one machine with a flatbed scanner and color printer, have enabled the home office to become an efficient and productive place to work. Many of us can now work at home part of the time, and save commuting time and energy costs in the bargain!

Above all; dress like a professional. If you dress like you are hanging out at a gym you will be tempted to lounge around and not get much done. You are in a work environment and will be tempted to take a break and watch some TV. Remember; you can’t do those things when working in a business building. So why would you do it when you have your own business? You shouldn’t. Be professional at all times when working in your office. Dressing in work clothes creates a professional atmosphere.

Earth is not exactly round; it is slightly pear-shaped. The North Pole radius is 1.73 inch (44mm) longer than the

South Pole radius. Plates carrying the continents migrate over the earth’s

surface a few inches per year, about the same speed that a fingernail

grows. Which also is about the speed at which the moon is moving away

from earth; the moon is moving away at 1-and-a-half inches (3,8cm) per

year. The reason probably being that earth is rotating ever slower - 1.4

milliseconds per century slower, some sources calculate 3 milliseconds per century - meaning less gravitational

pull on the moon. Earth is also moving away from the sun at 5.9 inches

(15cm) per year.

Tea can be bought in bags or, if you are into herbal tea, you might purchase the herbs to make your own tea mixtures from. But brewing loose leaves is different from bagged ones, or is it? Luckily, learning how to brew loose tea is not that much different than any other kind of tea.

One important aspect in tea brewing that a lot of people don’t pay attention to is the water. You want to be sure to use the best water you can as even the finest tea can be ruined by water that is heavily chlorinated. Water can also get “stale” meaning that it will absorb odors from the air around it. Certainly you don’t want to use stale or chemical laden water for your fine brew.

Another thing to watch out for is calcium carbonate. If you notice a white powder build up around your spout or drains then you probably have this in your water. Don’t worry, it’s not harmful but it can make your tea darker. Iron is another mineral you might have in your water that isn’t anything to worry about but it can affect the taste of your tea giving it somewhat of a metallic twang.

The next thing in learning how to brew loose tea is the temperature of the water. You probably just put the kettle on to boil and dumped the water into your cup when it whistled, right? Well the truth is that boiling water can be too “aggressive” for tea. You want to use water that is a bit less then boiling water that is too hot can turn green tea bitter but is OK for black tea. Oolong likes a lower temperature as does white. For your herbals, you’ll have to experiment to see which temperature yields best results.

Next, you need to figure out exactly how much tea to put in the cup. You’ll probably have to experiment with this too. Start with 1 teaspoon per cup and add or take away as needed.

You should steep your tea for between 2 and 3 minutes. The longer you steep it, the more caffeine, tannins and color you will get. But some teas will become bitter if steeped

too long due to the added tannins. If you like milk in your tea, you can steep it a little longer but be warned that tannins can get in the way of your mineral absorption so you might be negating some of the health benefits of tea if you steep

it for too long.

One of the biggest questions about how to brew loose tea is how to avoid getting a lot of leaves and sticks in your drink!. This has an easy answer. You can buy a little strainer that looks like a puffed out double sided teaspoon with holes in it and put your loose tea inside, then dip it in the hot water in your cup and swirl until you feel it has steeped enough! Then simply enjoy!

Its name has roots in the Middle East, but today shish kabob has a global reputation as a skewer full of mouth-watering food.

Several sources site Turkish and Armenian as the original languages of the term “shish kabob” or “shish kebab,” but it’s linked to an Arabic word meaning “cooked meat in small pieces” and an Aramaic word meaning “to char.” Whatever its word roots, the top 5 ways to build a shish kabob spell out “delicious” in any language.

1. Lamb shish kabob. This classic dish is probably closest to the original recipe that sparked so many culinary inventions. Lamb shish kabob consists of pieces of lamb alternating with green peppers, large mushrooms, cherry tomatoes or slices of medium tomato and white or red onions. Lamb is cut into 1-1/2-inch cubes and marinated in oil and spices of choice, then threaded onto the skewer with vegetables and grilled until done.

2. Beef shish kabob. This version substitutes beef for lamb in an otherwise classic recipe. Sirloin is the preferred meat cut for a beef shish kabob because it will hold together well on the skewer. Beef often lends itself to some experimenting with the marinade to create interesting new tastes. Cooks have traded out the traditional oil marinade of lamb kabobs for soy, wine or even Japanese teriyaki for beef kabobs.

3. Chicken shish kabob.Chicken shish kabobs offer cooks the opportunity to get really creative with flavors and spices. Only white meat chicken is used for this type of kabob. Marinades have featured pineapple

juice mixed with dry mustard, brown sugar and soy sauce; a Japanese “yakitori” version with soy sauce, sake, molasses and grated onion; and a spicy “shish taouk” featuring lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, cumin, black pepper and cayenne pepper.

4. Shrimp shish kabob.“Shrimp on the Barbie” has become an Australian cliché, but it’s still one of the most popular forms of shish kabob. A classic version uses no vegetables at all. Instead, one pound of shrimp is marinated two hours in olive oil with garlic, lemon, pepper and chopped parsley, and then grilled for just five minutes. Devotees report this recipe “bursts with flavor.”

5. Fruit and/or veggie kabobs. While it may be sacrilege to meat lovers, there are vegetarians out there who love nothing better than skewer full of grilled fruit or vegetable slices. Here’s where there are no holds barred to the recipe. Simply cut up favorite veggies and fruits, season as desired and grill until lightly charred on the edges. Kabobs of this kind are often served with a sweet or savory dipping sauce.

Veteran kabob cooks add that the kind of skewer used for kabobs is very important. Most prefer stainless steel skewers rather wood ones because they say the meat and vegetables will cling better to metal. However, wooden skewers have their fans as well. Whatever type of skewer is used, coating it lightly with oil before threading the meat and vegetables will help the meal slide easily onto the plate.

Dear Reena,Someone egged our front window last night from top to bottom. How can I clean it? Any help you are able to give me will be much appreciated. Thank you, Judith

Judith,Using a razor blade is the best way to get dried and hardened egg off of a window. Be sure you get a razor holder type tool, (don’t just use the blade alone). Soap the window and carefully make short strokes with the razor blade. Use caution because a razor can scratch low quality heat-strengthened or tempered glass. After the window is clean use my ‘Squeaky Clean Window Cleaner Recipe’: In a 16 oz. spray bottle, combine 1 tsp. inexpensive shampoo or dish soap, one quarter cup rubbing alcohol and fill the remaining portion with vinegar. Spray and wipe. Taken from Household Solutions 2 with Kitchen Secrets

Dear Reena,After using my baking sheets for several years they now look terrible (so bad that I am embarrassed to pull them out when company arrives at my house for supper). I have tried cleaning them with baking soda and water but the pans remain stained. Signed a huge fan! Vanessa

Vanessa,Some old, stained baking sheets require more than surface cleaning and what I use on my baking sheets is sandpaper. Fill the bottom of the pan with dish soap and water, let soak for 15 minutes. Leave the water in the pan and rub the pan using small pieces of 000 grit sandpaper and a little elbow grease. As the sandpaper becomes soaked, switch to fresh, dry sandpaper. I have never found this option to damage the finish of my baking sheets. Extra tip: Before using baking sheets, line them with non-stick aluminum foil. Makes clean-up a snap!

Hi Reena,I would like your suggestion for cleaning an oven and racks. Thanks, Val

Val,The world’s easiest way to clean an oven is to sprinkle the bottom of the oven with baking soda. Pour white vinegar over the baking soda, let bubble and soak for 30 minutes. Wipe and rinse with water. In the meantime put an old towel on the bottom of your bathtub, fill it with hot water and 1-cup of washing soda. Let oven racks soak overnight and in the morning (while wearing gloves) rinse the racks and wipe with vinegar. Clean as a whistle!

Hello Reena,How do I get rid of mushrooms and toadstools in the lawn, obviously something is rotten under the soil. Thanks, Fred

Fred,Mushrooms reproduce by the millions of wind-spread spores. To get rid of mushrooms, you must destroy the mycelium, the part that grows underground and eventually produces the part we see above ground. Some gardeners try to remove mushrooms and mycelium with a shovel. This is tedious, especially if the mushrooms cover a large area, and you could do more scattering than removing. Although removing

mushrooms may make your lawn look better, it will not kill the mycelium from which the mushrooms grow. If you can tolerate the mushrooms for a while, they should decrease in sunny, dry spells. Some people sprinkle dry laundry soap lightly throughout the area where they are growing but this really is not necessary.

Feedback from Fabulous ReadersHi Reena,

I read your article on removing nail polish from carpet and wanted to share my success story. Several years ago my daughter spilt brown nail polish on our forest green carpet. It was there for three weeks before I noticed it so I feared it was there to stay but thought I would try to remove it as it was in the middle of the floor. I mixed half cup vinegar with two liters cool water and attempted to

remove it. To my utter amazement the color lifted easily from the carpet like magic so I now bring out the vinegar for most carpet stains with excellent success. A

friend of mine used it on an old coffee stain on a light carpet and it pulled it out beautifully without changing the color of the carpet. Vinegar is a constant in my

household.

Wonderful email Donna,Vinegar is a constant in my home as well. A few weeks ago I burnt myself on the

BBQ. I poured water onto the area but that didn’t help. I then poured vinegar over the burnt area and the burn was soothed immediately. Each time the burn began to sting I poured more household vinegar onto the area. I was a little hesitant to pour acid on such a sore area but it really helped. For severe burns, consult a

doctor.

Dear Reena,Let me share a great way to remove a small hornet nest without the use of chemicals. Bees, hornets, and wasps are beneficial, preying on harmful bugs, and pollinating our flowers and food plants. When I found a nest at my house I decided the nest had to be removed because the door where they built is used several times per

day.

During the night when the hornets were sleeping, I removed the nest. It was a simple matter of using an empty soup can, large enough to surround and contain the nest and seal against a piece of boxboard slightly wider than the can. I used the board to shear off the nest and cover the can. Then I carried the intact nest to a tree branch far from the garage. Finally I shaped a plastic shopping bag in the form of a nest around a wooden screw, and put it up where the nest was. We

haven’t been bothered since. Regards, Darryl

Recycling is a noble effort in which everyone should participate. Sadly, the inconveniences sometimes faced by potential recyclers are enough to dis-suade them from actively taking part in the green movement. What better alternative than to easily dispose of trash and recycle at the same time? With a compost bin, that becomes a possibility. The days of painstakingly separating paper and plastic will be over with the acquisition of a compost bin. Composting relies on trash and food scraps, and the process is as simple as dumping those things into a bin and letting nature do the rest of the work. As the refuse decomposes, a valuable fertilizer is produced. Not only has trash been reused, but it’s actually useful!

Minor separation is a necessity, though. Basically, biodegradable items like vegetable peelings and uneaten food are ideal fodder for a compost bin. The bin itself is (usually) placed outdoors, while scraps are steadily fed into it. The sun and oxygen take care of the science, breaking down the materials into usable fertilizer. The organic substances provide ideal nutrition for plants, and it all comes from your home! Compost is fairly simple to produce and saves money and time that may have been spent at the hardware store lugging around heavy bags of manure. That is definitely something to consider the next time you are at the grocery store, as eggs and coffee will do the same work with much less effort.

Compost bins come in a number of styles. The bins are usually simple, and will not take up an excessive amount of space. One thing to consider though is

that the smell may be something you will want to keep away from nearby doors and windows. A quiet corner of the backyard is a perfect place for a compost bin. Many bins are designed to be placed either on grass or concrete. This guarantees that no matter what sort of landscaping your home has, you will be able to place a bin nearly anywhere. Bear in mind though, that the typical bin is open-bottomed. Any compost contained therein will come into contact with the ground.

The bin should be placed in an area that will receive a fair amount of sunlight and minimal wind. Wind blowing through the slats will dry out the compost. Sunlight is very necessary as it raises the temperature of the compost inside the bin to proper levels for successful decomposition. Excessive dampness should also be avoided, as it will adversely affect the decomposition. Despite the fact that compost is essentially decomposing organic material, there should not be an overly offensive odor coming from the bin. If this occurs, then it may be due to the placement of the bin in an area that is too damp. A level of moisture that is too high will lead to a smell that won’t be too pleasant. The normal smell emanating from a bin that indicates all is going well is something similar to dirt or earth. Think of a forest after rainfall.

MOTIVE

Issue #30- July 30/09Page 28

To the everyday man, a motorcycle is all about speed. The adrenaline rush experienced while going full throttle head-ily- there is nothing like it. Have you thought of a helmet then? Probably not.

Granted you might be confident as a rider, and well-trained as well, but road safety measures do not exist for nothing. You should always protect yourself form possible harm and accidents while driving, especially if you are driving a two wheeler. A helmet is the first precautionary step you can take. In crunch times it can make a difference between life and death. In fact, you need not be apprehensive about wearing one because they have become a style statement today.

New trends in motorcycle helmets are really striking today. For example, Scorpion helmets have been at the forefront of new generation motorcycle helmets and other driving-safety gear. It is not only their engineering excellence that makes Scorpion helmets stand out, it is also their innovative graphic designs. In fact the never-before graphic designs of ScorpionExo Helmets are said to be created by their designers spread the world over from Europe to Southern California. Isn’t that fantastic?Which one suits your style is your choice. But we can guarantee this- You have a lot of choices.

Obviously, before buying a helmet, you would want to combine style with comfort. The first thing you should do is visit the websites of major helmet manufacturers and shortlist the ones you like, based on what you like in them. Make sure

that the helmet you choose meets the specified safety standards like absorbing certain impact energy and fastening quality. Fit is another important criterion.

Try on helmets and see what fits you the best. While you can buy both helmets covering a part of your face and ones covering the entire face, and while both will protect you from the fatigue and the noise of the wind, the full faced one is more advisable since it will also prevent insects from entering the helmet. In case of a crash too, a full faced helmet is better since it protects you from the full impact of the crash. Though helmets are available in a wide variety of prices, think about your safety before you think about economy.

Most helmets today are made of state-of-the-art materials, which means that the outer shell is made of fiberglass and Kevlar matrix to withstand the highest impacts during any crash. The helmets made in the other eras were not as efficient as these because they were not wind tunnel tested and aero tuned to ensure aerodynamic superiority.

ScorpionExo helmets feature the HelmetPump which helps the riders have a perfect fit, and the advanced SpeedView feature in the face shield automatically adjusts itself according to the intensity of the sunlight. This is especially helpful when you are driving on bare stretches or in cities.

Always look for features that will provide the most of your money’s worth while buying helmets, and at the same time ensure that you have maximum safety while driving.

It can be a lot cheaper to do things yourself rather than paying to have a professional do it. Installing your own car alarm is another of these things many people opt to do on their own. It requires some time and patience as well as a few tools but it’s not all that difficult. Make sure you plan ahead before you do it so that you have all the time that you need and you are not missing any important components. When you open the parts required for your alarm, double check that they are all there and in good shape.

Make sure that you disconnect the battery of the car before you start this process. You will reconnect it after. After you disconnect the power to the battery you can start looking for a good place to mount the control module of the alarm. Often the underside of the hood is used for this. Make sure that wherever you put it, it will not obstruct anything else under the hood.

Your car alarm system should come with a set of helpful instructions to guide you through the process of installation. Pay close attention to it. The point is for the instructions to help you not hinder you. Look at the instructions to see where the sensors must be mounted. They need to be in the right spot for optimum efficiency.

Make sure to connect all of the appropriate wires so thesensor is linked to the control module.

As you go you may want to test all of the parts to make sure that they are as they should be and that they are all hooked up properly. When it comes to installing the LED status indicator you may have to do some dash drilling. Consult the instructions to see a diagram of the exact location on the dash so that you get it in just the right place.

After you get this all completed you can look for the wires that work the door locks. You will have to connect these wires to your alarm system which will be indicated in the guide. You may also have to connect your starter wire to the relay on the alarm system. Not every alarm system is the same so look over the steps you have to take before you decide to take on this job yourself.

When you have successfully hooked everything up you will have to connect the alarm system to the battery so that it can take power from your car. Reconnect the battery after this and go through a few trials to see if everything is working as it should be. It’s important to test the system before you drive away. And make sure you didn’t leave any loose wires anywhere. They all must be properly connected according to the instructions.

Always follow the directions that are given to you when installing your own car alarm. Gather all of the necessary tools needed ahead of time too so you don’t find yourself partially done and in need of something. Pay attention, follow direction and installing a car alarm will be a breeze.

Think of the battery as the heart of your car. You need a battery you can count on to get your motor running and keep it pumping all day long. The car battery is an essential element of the intricate network that makes your car start and keeps the engine running. The battery powers most of the car’s electrical components and accessory structures, such as the headlights, turn signals, fans, etc. While the alternator provides most of the electrical needs of the entire car system, the battery can keep them going in the event of an alternator malfunction. There are many batteries available at automotive supply stores, and it’s important to know exactly which model is the right choice for your car. The wrong battery won’t work in your car, and it may even cause damage to the vehicle. Knowing which battery is right for your particular vehicle is extremely important, and it can also help to learn about the various battery manufacturers and automotive supply companies. You should only have to buy a battery every few years, so make sure you’re buying the right one. Size Matters: Buying a battery for your car is like choosing a pair of shoes for you. One size does not fit all. The size of the battery itself is important, as it needs to fit snugly into the space allotted under the engine’s hood. If the battery is too small there is the risk of it becoming dismantled and causing vibrations or damage. Further, the battery will either be a top post or side post model, which will determine how it fits and operates. Power Up: You need to know your car’s specific powerrequirements before purchasing a car battery. Some cars need an 8-volt battery, while others require a 12-volt. There are a number of considerations to take into account, such as the size of the car and the number of accessories that must be powered. A huge sound system, for example, can easily suck the life out of an average car battery. A 12-volt battery should be able to maintain at least 7.2 volts when the vehicle is starting and while it is operational.

Chill Out: If you live in a cold-climate area, it’s important to check the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) before you buy. CCA is a measurement used to determine a battery’s ability to start an engine at 0° Fahrenheit, within a 30 second period. A higher CCA rating means the battery will start your vehicle faster and more effectively in freezing weather. Get it in Writing: No matter how well known the manufacturer is, you need to get a written manufacturers warranty with your battery. Make sure that the battery is in original condition, and is not a recharged model. The quality and dependability of the battery you choose should be indicative of the warranty you’re offered. Make sure that battery is guaranteed for the duration of the battery’s life (ie: if you plan on using the battery for five years, look for a five-year warranty). Keep it Fresh: Whether you’re buying bananas or batteries, you need to make sure they’re fresh and damage-free. Just because it’s a piece of car equipment, it’s not OK for your battery to waste away on a stockroom shelf. Make sure that the battery you buy is produced by a known and respected manufacturer, and that it’s fully charged and ready to start your car. If you’re not careful, you can run the risk of purchasing a fake or recharged battery. Look on the side of a battery casing for a special label or decal. You’ll find the month and year that the battery was shipped from the manufacturer’s plant. The letters ‘A’ through ‘M’ represent months of the year. For example, ‘A’ is January and ‘M’ is December. The letter ‘I’ is not used. The numbers 1 through 9 denotes the year of manufacture. Therefore, if the sticker on your batter reads L4, you know that it was manufactured in November 2004. A car battery provides starting power to your vehicle, so make sure it’s dependable. Understand your car’s requirements and know how to verify the quality of the battery before you make the final purchase. Buying a boat is a dream come true for many. They provide a great outlet for getting away from it all, kicking back and relaxing. Buying the boat, however, isn’t where the shopping ends. Boat trailers are necessary purchases for anyone that wants to transport their new purchase from lake to lake or sea to sea. These handy devices aren’t one size fits all though.

Buying boat trailers isn’t at all unlike buying a boat itself. The options on the trailer market are pretty plentiful and some research will be necessary to make sure the trailer purchased is the right one for the boat in question. A trailer than handles a John boat, for example, likely won’t be the best for hauling a cabin cruiser. Trailers can run the gamut, too, from those with every imaginable bell and whistle to more simplistic versions. What works and what doesn’t for a particular boat and budget will be the biggest questions to address in advance.

Some things to consider when looking at boat trailers include:

* Size of the boat. This is a paramount concern whenlooking at trailers. It’s important to make sure the boat you’ve purchased will fit snuggly on the trailer. Look at manufacturer recommendations on size and weight before choosing a particular trailer over another.

* Safety features. Good trailers offer their buyers a number of safety features to ensure the boat, its owners and other people on the road are safe during transport. This can range from special locking mechanisms to break and turn lights. The lights, however, will likely be required by law, so it’s not a good idea to consider a trailer with this necessary feature.

* Ease features. There are manual boat trailers and then there are those that come with special devices to make loading and unloading a bit easier on their users. Adjustable trailers are chosen by many simply because it makes hauling a snap.

* Pricing. Boat trailers can cost a lot of money or they can be fairly inexpensive. It’s a good idea to decide on a budgetbefore going out and shopping. A trailer with every bell and whistle might not fit a budget, but one that’s safe and secure very likely will be.

* Performance reports. There will be a lot riding on a trailer, so it’s a good idea to check the reputations of different makes and models before deciding to buy a particular brand. Check with consumer reporting agencies and even look up past reports from owners to see how trailers fare.

* Hauling vehicle. Some trailers are meant to work with any type of hauling vehicle, but others are designed more specifically to work with trucks. Make sure the trailer you’re looking at fits the vehicle in question.

Buying a boat can be a great way to get away from it all. There’s just something about hitting the open water to kick back and relax that helps make a week of workaday grind melt away. Whether it’s for sailing, cruising, skiing or fishing, however, all boats that will be transported need good boat trailers. Do some research in advance, and this purchase should be a snap.

Due to the nature of the sport and the risks involved, climbing requires a great deal of training and experience. The equipment involved in climbing is not only to get you to where you want to go but also to protect you from injury and fatality.

There are many pieces of equipment but the first basic ones to familiarize yourself with is the karabiners (carabiners, or “biners”), rope harness and ropes. These are basic pieces of equipment for most styles of climbing, excluding the more dangerous style of free climbing.

Karabiners come in a variety of sizes and are made of durable yet light aluminum. There are two types of biners; locking and non-locking. The type you will use for your climb depends on the type of climb and thus the degree of safety required.

Non-locking biners are oval shaped and have a swing clasp opening. With the use of ropes, they are used as a stay to connect a rope harness, pitons and other gear. The rope is pushed against the clasp, enters the loop, and a spring action quickly closes the clasp.

Locking biners are very similar to non-locking ones but they provide an extra measure of security. There is a sleeve on the clasp that locks

it into place after the rope is in the biner. While some are self-locking, most require a simple twist to secure and lock it.

Karabiners are made to hold your weight and that of your equipment. They will rarely break but it does happen especially in extreme cold weather. It is suggested to use two biners when attaching a rope harness.

The rope harness is another piece of basic equipment that is used in all styles of climbing. The harness is what cradles you while you are climbing and attaches you to the ropes with the use of biners. There are different types of rope harnesses and choosing the right one depends on the style of climbing you’ll be doing.

A sit harness is used for rock climbing and abseiling and is only worn around the chest and shoulders. There is a waist strap and two leg loops and it offers you freedom of movement. A chest harness is sometimes used along with the sit harness to prevent you from flipping around and to provide more stabilization. A full body harness is essentially a combination of the sit and chest harness. It provides less freedom of movement but is usually preferred by beginners since it gives the climber a higher sense of security.

Climbing is a sport that requires you to know the equipment inside and out. Doing so will ensure you have a safe and enjoyable climb.

The movie Gone With The Wind has been the best-attended film since its release in 1939. When adjusted for inflation it also is the biggest grossing movie, having raked in more than $1.4 billion.

Without a doubt the most famous line in Gone With The Wind is when Rhett Butler tells Scarlet O’Hara, “Frankly me dear, I don’t give a damn.” According to Cuss Control, a book by James O’Connor, Gone With The Wind director David Selznick was fined heavy for that curse word: $5,000 - a lot of money in those days.

The movie is based on the book by Margaret Mitchell. It was the only book she wrote.

The most basic piece of equipment required for fishing is fishing tackle. Fishing tackle is a generic term that refers to equipment such as lures, bait, lines, rods, reels, nets and trawls, downriggers, outriggers, gaffs, harpoons, clevises, floats, and traps.

The kind of fishing tackle that you will require depends on the kind of fish that you are angling to catch. It will also be dictated by your experience in fishing. A fishing tackle can be as simple as a soda can with fishing line attached to it, or a pole with a line tied to the end. These simple forms of fishing tackle are used to fish near the bank.

Advanced users may want to consider a rod and reel arrangement. This type of fishing tackle uses reels to store a large amount of line. This enables you to cast your line further. A rod and reel arrangement is essential for fishing in deeper waters and for tackling larger fish. There are many different types of fishing tackle that employ the rod and reel arrangement. The four basic kinds are: spin cast, spinning, bait cast, and fly casting. For more information, visit our website at http://www.seaisletackle.com.

Spin cast

Spin cast fishing tackle is ideal for beginners as it is easy to use, after a bit of practice. A spin casting rod has a straight handle and line guides to prevent the line from running awry. The reel is mounted on top of the handle of the fishing rod. The fishing line comes out of a small hole in the cover of the reel. Spin casting is used to catch fish such as bluegill, crap-pie, and other pan fish.

SpinningSpinning fish tackle is so called because the casting reels spool spins as the line is cast out. The design is similar to spin casting fishing tackle except that the reel is usually mounted on the underside of the handle and the line is released by using the index finger. This sort of design takes a bit of practice, and is only recommended for more advanced users. The advantage of a spinning tackle is that it allows you to cast your line over a larger distance and lets you use a variety of fishing lines.

Bait castingBait casting is one of the most difficult forms of fishing tackle to use. As the line is controlled by your thumb, you have to put in many hours of practice to ensure that you can control the line properly. The advantage of bait casting is that it gives you an unbelievable amount of accuracy and control. In fact bait casting is the preferred method of fishing tackle for professional bass fishing.

Fly castingFly casting is regarded as the pinnacle of fishing tackle. This is the most difficult of all fishing tackles and requires a lot of practice and patience to master. The basic movement is similar to spin casting; however in fly casting, instead of relying on a weighted lure, the weight of the line itself carries the artificial fly to the fish. Fly casting allows you to cast your line with speed, accuracy, and gives maximum range. Fly fishing is a highly competitive sport and attracts thousands of enthusiasts every year.

Have you ever enjoyed the pleasure of spending an afternoon boating on a lake or an ocean? If so, then you know how fun boating can be. You know that there is nothing quite like the feeling of being on the water and enjoying time in beautiful weather.

Boating is a great activity for many reasons. First, it is great because it allows people to be outside in the beauty of nature. There is no better way to spend a spring, summer or warm fall day than boating. Not only do you get to be outside, but you also get to enjoy being in and on the water. Boating enables you to enjoy the warmth and the sun. It is necessary and helpful for people to get outside and boating is one of the best ways to do that.

Boating also provides time for family and friends to gather and enjoy the company of one another. Busy families can get away from the rush of work and activities and enjoy a quiet day away from all distractions. Boating can be a perfect activity that combines rest, beauty and fun. Friends can come together for a day or a weekend and enjoy renewed friendship and conversation during a special boating trip.

A great thing about boating is that it includes several different ways to have fun. Boating allows you to enjoy the quiet and peace of anchoring at a spot on the water or you can enjoy the wind in your face as you speed from one side of the water to another. For many people, boating also means swimming, tubing, and even waterskiing. Once you are out on the water there are so many ways to enjoy the day. You can anchor the boat and spend hour after hour jumping into

the water and swimming. More adventurous people will want to try out a tube or a waterski to enjoy boating even more. Some will love the thrill of watching the tubers or the waterskiers from the safety of the boat. Whatever water activities sound fun to you, boating is a great way to enjoy them all.

If you have never learned how to handle a boat you can take lessons and learn how to lead your friends or family in a boating adventure. If you do not own a boat and are not sure if purchasing one is right for you, look for a family member or friend to lend you theirs for a week-end boating excusion. In no time you will be so excited about boating that you will want to purchase your own. Your family and friends will look to you to provide the endless hours of outdoor fun that boating is sure to provide.
