Greetings and welcome to this month’s edition of the “award winning” TheDrifter Newsletter, Sacramento Valley Region’s number 1 choice for your local Porsche news, and do we have the news!

Since the last edition of the newsletter, a lot has happened that I need to catch up on before I go into the Porsche Parade.

On June 1st our SVR VP, Rik Larson along with Richard Wetzel put together a wonderful TSD class and rally held at Porsche of Livermore. It was a beautiful day and what better way to start a Sunday morning than a drive to Liver-more. Rita and I were part of about 40 folks from many regions to learn about the lingo of TSD. Thank you to the folks at Porsche of Livermore for hosting the class and rally!

On June 7th there were two events going on, the SVR AX at San Joaquin Fairgrounds led by Collin Fat and his AX Team and the monthly breakfast at Brookfield’s hosted by our “Share the Wealth” Chair, Herb Hoover and his wife Jan! Then on June 8th the Zone 7 SVR Concours was held at Niello Porsche in Rocklin led by our Concours Chair, Kent Brandon. If my sources are correct you should find more information on these events in this edition of TheDrifter. A big thanks to Collin, Herb and Kent and all the volunteers that helped bring these events together! I want to personally thank Kim Nelson for stepping up while Kent was out of town.

Porsche Parade 2014I hate to admit it after talking with so many people about how many times they have attended Parade, but yes, this was our first time! And as they say, you’ll always remember your first time! I can’t be prouder with the turn out we had representing our region! Not only that, but wait till you read about all the awards! The cars, oh my word! Somewhere around 1400 cars registered for the event. With all the activities scheduled for the week, it was a bit overwhelming at first. Putting things in my Outlook calendar helped a lot.

My number one experience was getting to meet with Hans Peter Porsche, Sandy Mayr and Paul Gilbreath. It turns out Paul and I have something in common, HP! The surprise I got was having each of them sign my hat!

Also on my list I had the chance to meet with Vu Nguyen, Executive Director as well as Manny Alban, President PCA and of course our Zone Representative, Paul Czopek

The second best experience was taking a couple of laps around Laguna Seca. I heard Rita let out a scream that I was going to lose my phone out the window as I was recording the corkscrew! From the gimmick rally to the dinners and getting to hang out with the other presidents was something I’ll always remember!

What’s coming up?As we roll into July there are still many more events to keep your oil warm and your tires turning! Let me know if you have any ideas for a tour or a dinner and we can put something together that everyone can enjoy. For all the events planned be sure to read about them in TheDrifter or on the SVR-PCA.org website.

I look forward to your comments, suggestions and thoughts and hope to see you at the next club event!

Till next month, Steve [email protected]

• A couple of corrections and updates to the calendar to note:

The August 5th dinner at Joe Caribe Bis-tro and Café is in Auburn, not Foresthill

The SVR New and Old Member BBQ will be held on Sunday, September 14th (instead of Saturday, September 13th)

The SVR Wine Tour originally scheduled for September 14th has moved to October 12th. The host is Frederick Rauch.

And I keyed the wrong date for the SVR Dinner at Rudy’s Hideway. It is Monday, October 13th

• Speaking of calendars ---- the month of August (2014) will feature something that occurs only once every 823 years ---- there are 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays, and 5 Sundays. The Chinese call it “Silver pockets full.” So, send this message to your friends and in four days money will surprise you.  Based on Chinese Feng Shui. This info is courtesy of SVR member Arnold O’Shields.

• The Werks Reunion event in August in Monterey is gaining momentum. There are now more than 200 entries. Registration closes August 2nd. You can register at werksreunion.com. And spectators can enjoy this event at no charge!

• Have you visited the new PCA website? A lot of changes and some great news coverage. I still have not figured out how to view the PANORAMA online yet.

• 1.9 miles of track have been added to the Thunderhill Raceway up in Willows. That now makes for a total of 5 miles. Should make for some interesting events.

• TRG (one of our advertisers) is involved in the Aston Martin Motorsports Festival at Laguna Seca at the end of August. The price is right --- $20 for each day.

• The California Automobile Museum has just opened a new exhibit ---- “Selling the Dream: Sacramento’s Early Car Deal-ers.” It runs through Sunday, November 30th……..which just happens to be the day of the CAM Christmas Tree Decorating and Pot Luck. More about this later.

Editor’s CornerBob Jacobson, SVR Drifter Editor

The Sacramento Valley Region Drifter received 2nd place in the PCA National Newsletter judging at the 2014 Parade

in Monterey thanks to our talented staff of hard workers. This is a very important step as in last year’s judging The Drifter was almost in last place. This year’s first place went to Der Auspuff from Santa Barbara Region, but we are looking forward to obtaining that award next year. Chief editors Bob Jacobson, Rik Larson and Bob Cannon, with team work, share the position which years ago was staffed by one editor. Technical changes with the Internet have made this shared position possible and enjoyable. And with the wide use of cell phones, there is always a collection of pictures available from each event. Associate editors, Ron Reagan tech, Collin Fat autocross, and Steve McCrory concours work monthly to provide the latest information in their various fields of interest. Not to forget Jeff Kinder our official photographer. Thanks also to the strong

support of our very active President Barker and SVR board. And, last but far from least are the many mem-bers of SVR who volunteer, or when asked, stepped forward with stories and articles about themselves, cars and adventures. Last month we reached 32 pages in one issue with interesting pictures and articles. Looking back at the past two years our monthly newsletter articles have traveled to England, Germany, New Zealand, and around the USA. We had the honor to do SVR’s 50th Anniversary issue in August 2012 and a special ladies issue in

January 2013. We even did a cover photo with three excellent 356s! Our newsletter goals are still to inform, to educate and to entertain.

Thanks to you all for helping raise the bar and making The Drifter the winner that it is.

As always, It’s not the cars, it’s the people.

Each autocross season, SVR hosts a Zone 7 event as part of the Zone’s Autocross Championship series. The

Zone series allows those drivers to compete for year- end awards and bragging rights. This year, along with SVR, Golden Gate Region, Loma Prieta, and Redwood regions are hosting events and the series will consist of 7 events. To qualify for year-end awards, each competitor must compete in at least 5 of the 7 scheduled events.

The club’s Zone 7 event was held at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds on June 7th. The attendance continued the trend I have seen at the prior events with 58 drivers competing on a very warm, June morning. Temperatures were forecast for 100 degrees but only got to a high of 94 degrees with a good Delta breeze which made the conditions fairly tolerable. The autocross team did a fantastic job of setting up the course the day ahead and allowed the driv-ers to get an early start and beat the heat. All

drivers got 6 timed runs in the morning session and 4 additional runs in the afternoon.

Past Zone 7 events which SVR has hosted have only seen a handful of drivers from other regions. This event was exceptional with 28 drivers from other regions competing for Zone 7 points. We had members from Golden Gate, Sierra Nevada, Redwood, Diablo, and Yosemite regions in attendance. A whole contingent of board members and autocrossers from Red-wood region included club president, Vern Rog-ers, Secretary, Craig Steele, Autocross Chair Grady Carter and Co-chair Bob Schoenherr and his friend Anita Benzing. Zone 7 representative Paul Czopek and Zone 7 autocross chair, Larry Adams were also in attendance and competing for points.

The June event was the week before Parade and I think from the showing of hands at the driver’s meeting, there was a large contingent of drivers using the event as a warm up for the Parade autocross in Monterey. That being said, the competition was fierce with 6 out of the top 10 times going to the SVR drivers. Top time of day for the men’s and women’s division were captured by SVR members, Steve Nieslony with an unbeatable time of 37.052, beating his nearest competitor by more than .5 seconds. Joy Nieslony controlled the outcome in the

Monthly, we see an average of 6 new members join our region. Some may have just recently purchased their

first Porsche, while a small percentage have moved to our region from other parts of the country. Niello Porsche recently introduced a Porsche Club membership offer which rewards the owner of a newly purchased Porsche with a complimentary one year membership to PCA, and as a direct result of this program, we are picking up a few members a month. Thank you Niello Porsche for your generosity and support.

I try to do a feature article on at least one new or interesting member who also has decided to compete in the region’s autocross series. One new member who really caught my attention was Dave Parker. Dave has competed in all three of our recent autocrosses and has placed in the top 6 every time out. It really caught my attention on his second event after finishing a solid 6th in his 2014 Cayman S. Who is this guy, I asked? I thought I would share with you what I have discovered.

Dave recently moved from Woodinville, Wash-ington where he was a member of the Pacific Northwest region in the Seattle area with his two sons, Steven, age 15, and Andrew, age 17. He is a computer science professor at Sierra College and also worked in the high tech industry as a software engineer and manager at Microsoft. Dave was active with Pacific Northwest PCA, SCCA, and is a PCA certified race instructor. He has ten years of experience with SCCA and PCA as a club racer having raced at Portland International and Bremerton raceways. He also raced in the 24 hours of Daytona with 7 other PCA club racers in a pair of Porsche GT3R’s. Wow, I would have been lucky to attend Daytona let along have the

skills and opportunity to race at this prestigious event. Most of Dave’s competitive mo-torsport experience is at the track though he told me he had done a few autocrosses quite some years ago. From watching him compete at the last several SVR autocrosses, I don’t think he needs too many more events to really challenge the top autocrossers of SVR for the top time of day.

Dave competed in his first race with his 1993 Toyota Supra Turbo and progressed with racing a 1993, 964 RS America. Presently he competes in his 2014 Cayman S. Dave honed his driver skills at Skip Barber and the Bob Bondurant School in Arizona before qualifying for his race license. Having observed Dave’s smooth driving style at our recent events, I can truly say he is a very good driver with an aggressive driving style that will easily transfer over to Dave becoming an ace autocrosser.

Dave has enjoyed the SVR events he has attended and “Aside from the fun of driving, and meeting and chatting with other Porsche enthusiasts, there is something very satisfying about getting a chance to take your daily driver street car up to the limit and little past. The Cayman is so stuck to the road….”

The performance driving skills learned whether as an autocrosser or track driver are similar. Only the speeds and number of turns on a course differ. Learning the line, braking, corner entry and exit, and steering control are appli-cable to both sports. I asked Dave to compare the two and he responded: “Compared to track racing, I discovered that I was not as

obsessively competitive as some of my fellow drivers during a race. I would stick my nose in under them and push them out of the way just to win. However, I am very motivated to get the best time I can and better my previous times.” Regarding the differences he sees between a track and a temporary autocross course in Stockton, Dave commented, “Seeing the line is much harder in autocross.”

Dave definitely seems to have a very competi-tive side to his personality and is a true motor-sport enthusiast. I asked him what his favorite tire was and he responded, “Oh my gosh, don’t get me started on tires.” He admitted to having a preference for Hoosier R compound race tires and is thinking of upgrading his Cayman with a set for autocrossing.

I hope Dave will continue with his autocrossing in the future and become a member of our autocross team. He certainly has the talent. In addition, he did ask how he could become an instructor so that he could get his 17 year old into the sport. Now that is something I would endorse. Welcome to the club, Dave!

women’s competition with a time of 39.399, which not only put her on top of the women

but landed her a 8th place finish over-all. Rounding out the top ten times of the day were Grady Carter, Redwood Region, Collin Fat, SVR, Ed Hunter, Golden Gate, Terry Zaccone, Golden Gate, Larry Sharp, Loma Prieta, Dave Parker, SVR, Dave Schnitzer, SVR, and Greg Zajic, SVR.

The Matt Deter de-signed course proved challenging to less experienced drivers

with its open course design. Special recogni-tion goes to SVR member Gino Cortopassi

for his heroics at the end of one of his runs. He did a show boat 360 degree spin out as he crossed the finish line in his 2005 Porsche 996 turbo. Way to go Gino! Gino, if you had not spun out after crossing the finish line, I would have pulled you aside to tell you otherwise and perhaps given you a warning!

The events attendance of 58 drivers was a record for any Zone 7 series event that SVR has hosted and is the first time in many seasons that attendance has exceeded 50 driv-ers since our last event at Mather. I would like to personally thank the other region autocross chairs for spreading the word and for support-ing a great event.SVR’s next autocross is July 27th with registra-tion opening on June 27th. Based on attendance for the past four events, I think we can expect another great turnout.

SVR Charity AuctionBy Mike and Deb Dunn, Charity Chairs

It’s time to mark your calendar to attend SVR’s Annual Charity Auction on Sunday, September 28th 2014. This year’s event will feature a catered Mexican lunch at Kim and Rachel Nelson’s showroom/facility in Shingle Springs. A special engagement of the “Speedsters” will supply music for this fun event.

Through the generosity of club members and the community, the auction items collected so far have been fantastic. The collection to date includes: 2 tickets to the 2015 Concours at Pebble Beach, special wine parties hosted by local wineries, Porsche memorabilia, a unique wood carving of a golfer that has to be seen to be believed, a baby quilt and blankets, a video camera – excellent for taping your auto-xing or touring experience. In addition, the Sander’s have donated another popular Bi-plane ride and a handcrafted bench complete with Porsche logos. This bench would be a show piece in anyone’s garden. Also donated

If you haven’t participated in the California Automobile Museum (CAM) Car Cruise in the past, then you should put that on your list of things to do this summer. Besides being a great car show and cruise, it is also becoming a music festival this year with six bands playing in different locations.

One of the best parts of the entire day is seeing all the great cars that come out to participate and the opportunity to talk with other people who are just as passionate about their cars and car club as we are about ours. The day starts out at Sacramento State where everyone gathers and we have a car show just for the participants. After a drivers’ meeting with the CHP, we’re on a 5 mile complete street closure cruise to Fulton Avenue between El Camino and Marconi where the streets are again completely blocked off. Once parked on Fulton Avenue, there will be plenty to do and see including live music, a Beer Garden, Food, Product Vendors and much more.

You can see all the event details and sign up for the Cruise by going on the Museum’s website at www.calautomuseum.org - click on the 6th Annual CAM Car Cruise link. Signing up by July 26th will save you $10.00. Last year we had about 40 Porsches in the cruise and I’m hoping we have many more this year.

Please feel free to send me an email ([email protected]) if you have any questions, and I look forward to seeing you on August 9th !

Upcoming Events - Close Ups...

are 2 tickets to the “Jersey Boys” production coming to Sacramento in November. Look in next month’s Drifter for a preview of additional featured items.

This is a list of a select few of the items – but we need more! Your additional donations would be graciously accepted on behalf of our two charities - Alpha K-9 and Ride-to-Walk. Alpha K-9, a veteran non-profit organization, trains rescue dogs as service companions for

those veterans suffering from PTSD that need help adjusting to daily routines. Ride-to-Walk helps kids and young adults with neurological challenges to enjoy horseback riding as part of their therapy and confidence building. The SVR club can be counted on to support this yearly event. Your donations…..be they large or small, will make a difference to those who need our help. As club members, we have the easy part in this event. We come to have a good time with friends, listen to great music, score a bargain, and as a bonus do some good for two deserving charitable organizations. So bring a donation and go home with two or more treasures.

In addition to the donations, we need volunteers to help make the auction a success. Call us for a donation pickup or get on our list of distin-guished volunteers. Call us at 916.837.0203 or email to [email protected]

Sunday, June 8th, dawned warm and promised to get warmer, as we turned off the alarm clock, and prepared for

the downhill drive from Grass Valley to Niello Porsche in Rocklin for SVR’s Zone 7 Concours. Quick detail wax...check. Window cleaner...check. Microfiber towels...check. Wide brim hats to defend against the rising sun...check.

The predicted high temperature of over 100 was a factor in the smaller turnout of both judged cars (21) and displayed cars (40), but it worked out in favor of those who attended. Almost all of the judged entries were directed into the relatively cool and shaded service bay area of Niello. Last minute preparations went smoothly as the judges broke up into teams and sharpened their focus with coffee and pastries.

Light conditions are always a factor in Con-cours presentation and judging, with the softer light inside the service bay working to show the cars at their best advantage. Twenty-one Porsches were evaluated the judging teams in classes ranging from Wash and Shine through Street, Restoration, Preservation to Full.

Niello personnel provided a roll-out seminar for the new Macan, revealing the goals and

engineering develop-ment that has gone into the latest addition to the Porsche vehicle family - attractive visual design, perfor-mance and utility in abundance.

After a lunch prepared by SVR volunteers, and time to reconnect with Porsche friends, and make new ones as well, Kim and Rachel Nelson began the awards ceremony that duly recognized the efforts and enthusiasm of entrants in each group.

Niello provided door prizes that included a certificate for a “Spa Treatment”...no, not for you, but for your Porsche that includes a complete service, detail, and the use of a loaner Porsche for the day!

About a year ago I decided that I would like to pursue another auto restora-tion project. I had just completed a

detached 600 square foot “post-modern” metal garage of my own design at my home in Car-michael. I equipped it with 220 volt power and bought all new Miller welding equipment. About 5 years earlier, I had completed the restora-tion of a 1983 Mercedes 240D, 4-speed. It is finished in a creamy “Manila Yellow”. It makes me hungry for banana cream pie every time I drive it. This car was my daily commuter as it is equipped with air conditioning, a huge power sunroof and it is a great riding, handling, safe, and fun to drive automobile.

I am not new to the restoration game. Over the years I have restored VW bugs (’56 convertible, ’68 sedan), Volvos (’71 142E GT, ’67 Amazon wagon, ’72 P1800 ES) a Peugeot (’67 404 wagon) and a ‘58 Cessna 180A airplane. None of these were concours restorations but finished to be daily drivers that anyone would have been proud to drive. As you can see, I have a passion for European cars (and airplanes too). In trying to decide a worthy project, I reviewed all the usual suspects: Jaguars, Alfa Romeos, Triumphs, and finally Porsches. While attending a summer birthday party I ran into my friend, Gene Wong. He had driven his beautiful red ’74 911 Targa that he has owned for over 25 years. That inspired my hunt for a suitable Porsche. I narrowed my search to ’67 thru ’73 911 and 912 cars in need of restoration. Finding a good 911 project at a fair price was next to impossible. Having, in the past, driven both the 911 and 912 I had remembered the 912, of the ’67 thru ’69 era, handled much better than the 911. The 912 is 220 lbs lighter because of a lighter engine, and the 911 had to be ballasted with 60 lbs of iron weights in the front bumper to help balance it. The 912 is also, at this time, a more financially modest acquisition.

In talking to John Roland, a member in the local MG club, he mentioned that a lot of car trading goes on between club members. This got me to thinking, and a look at the Auto section of the Friday Sacramento Bee made me aware of the club’s 1st Saturday Breakfasts. Many great ideas from club members helped my search immensely. Then, on the May breakfast, Raleigh Morrow said he had a ’67 912 he might consider passing on. You all know him with his beautifully original ’67 911S in Bahama Yellow. Upon visiting his vineyard in Lodi and examining his 912 in his barn, I knew it was the car for me. The day after my birthday we had come to an agreed price. Then, back to Lodi with my good friend, Douglas Hubbs, and my car trailer. Every time I looked in my truck’s rearview mirror and saw the froggy smile of the 912, I smiled too. Doug also smiled as he helped me

A 1967 912 ProjectBy Jim Devore, SVR Member

push it into my garage in Carmichael.

The Restoration ProcessAs with any restoration project, it must be approached cautiously. It is not a matter of just pulling it apart and filling up labeled white, lidded “job termination” boxes and expecting it to go together right. I have seen too many of those projects being sold off as “works in progress”. Research is essential. One of the best books that I think should be read from cover to cover is, The Complete Porsche 912 Guide, by Duane Spencer. This book can save you a lot of time and misdirected effort.

The internet also has a wealth of informa-tion. The best site is the 912 registry: www.912registry.org. The www.texas912.org is another great site with full factory repair manuals on PDF formats. There are also many individual sites that share in detail their restoration odysseys. Start collecting needed parts, both used and new. Even though they are expensive, they will never be this cheap again. But, do not order rubber body seals and parts until you need them. They will shrink with age, and if they don’t fit they can’t be returned at that point. I am not planning a “Certificated Original Restoration”. I will keep to a totally original look, original 912 color, but I will be doing a number of upgrades for safety and performance. I will highlight some of the restorations plans and progress.

Engine, Transmission, Fuel System and Electrical The engine has not been run in many years but fuel remained in the gas tank. The 912 has a drain plug on its fuel tank but never use it to drain any large quantity of fuel. It could lead to a very costly and dangerous accident. The best way to drain it is to disconnect the engine side fuel line and connect a small electric fuel pump and transfer it to proper fuel cans. This fuel pump is inexpensive and available at O’Rielly’s. The remaining left in the tank can be drained from the drain plug; only about a quart will remain. Then dispose of the vintage gas at a proper toxic waste site. Sacramento offers a free service on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday on Roseville Road. I drained all old motor oil as well.

I am currently rebuilding the carburetors as my first attempt to start the engine resulted in short running with a flood out. Both needle and seats were corroded. After the freshened carbs are installed I can then evaluate the state of the engine. The transmission is currently a 4 speed, 902/0 and I have purchased a 5 speed from a ’68, 902/02. This is a direct replace-ment with no modifications required except the gear shift knob. I love those “dog leg” shift patterns. As far as electrical, a complete going over and repairs done where needed will take place for dependability and safety.

Body and Paint My jealous neighbor came over to see what I was working on and said, “I certainly hope you plan to change the color!” He went on and on longer than he should have. Anyway, it is Bahama Yellow. Some love it and some don’t. I myself am partial to yellow and luckily the Porsche 912 came in about 7 shades of yel-low. Time will tell as to what I decide. I am open to suggestions on color and paint processes.

RUST!! Yes, it has some, as they all do. Although the 911/912 didn’t rust as bad as the 356, it still has its issues. This car has not been driven on salted roads so the fender wells, rocker panels, and doors are all good. But the battery has leaked causing some front end decay, and the rear window has leaked causing rear pillar and hat shelf damage. Also, because water can get trapped on the floor because of the original rubber mats, a “felony hole” has formed on the driver’s side. All this is very repairable with available panels and my years of being a metal artist, designer and metal arts teacher make this work routine. I am designing an aluminum cart to raise the chassis to be able to work on it more easily. More on that later.

InteriorIt needs it all. Seats, headliner, door panels, carpets (no more rubber mats), and the most expensive, the dash pad. Bill Ford of Prescott, Arizona is redoing the original leather steering wheel. I will have the instruments rebuilt and the original Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio too. A set of inertia reel 3-point seat belts will be installed for safety.

Wheels, Tires, Brakes, SuspensionThe car currently sits on very old tires, and cracked and worn “aftermarket” rims. Thanks to Ron Reagan’s excellent article on N-spec tires I purchased a set of Pirelli P6000 N-2, 185/70-15 tires. I have ordered a set of Fuchs replica wheels and alloy lugs. I will let you know how I like those; they are suppose to be a “spot on” copy. The brakes need new discs and calipers rebuilt with new brake lines too. I am upgrading the single circuit brakes to dual circuit for, again, safety. This car came from the factory with the optional front anti-sway bar and the Koni style suspension. This is a big plus and new components (ball joints, bushings, etc.) will be installed throughout.

I know this sounds like a daunting process but now that I am semi-retired, the work progresses at a noticeable pace. Oh, and is anyone interested in a very sweet 1983 Mercedes 240D?

2014 is my last year of Vintage racing. Mardi and I decided in late 2013 that we would only attend two events in 2014,

Steve Earle’s Sonoma Historics at Sonoma Raceway in mid-May and the first weekend of the Monterey ReUnion car happening in August at Laguna Seca. The following is my story of Mardi and my week at the Sonoma Historics from May 14th to 18th.

I race a 1962 Lotus 23B, with a 1674 cc, Lotus Twin Cam motor. The Lotus is classified as a Sports Racer. Jack Brabham, three times Formula One Driving Champion was the original owner/driver. Brabham drove the Lotus in the 1962 USSRC series at Riverside and Laguna Seca.

My class is made up of cars built from 1960 to 1966. The class consists of cars with engines from 1600cc to 5000cc, and under two litre cars such as several Lotus 23Bs, Elva Mk 6, 7, and 8s’, plus a lotus 19, 3700 cc, and several early Chevy engined Can/Am cars which are 5 – 7 seconds faster. I am competitive with the other Lotus’ and Elvas. My class also contained 1964 to 1970 FIA cars which are 10- 12 seconds faster, consisting of several Porsches, a 908/6, two 910s, and a 917K, and a Ferrari 312P. The FIA Porsches and Ferrari are faster in a straight line. But under braking and corner-ing I am competitive and can close up on them until we get to the straights.

Our Sonoma week started Wednesday. We ar-rived at Sonoma Raceway mid-morning to park our trailer, set up our pit space, and register. Wednesday was a REALLY hot day, up to the mid- nineties

Our Vintage Race WeekendBy Skip Quain, PCA Quest Member

As my knees gave out several years ago. McGee Motorsports located at the raceway, prepares my car and supports me during the weekend. Mardi handles keeping the Lotus polished to a high sheen, and organizes the pit and trailer. But, her main jobs are to keep us on schedule for the entire weekend. She is invalu-able in getting my face shield clean, having my gloves, balaclava, helmet, and driving glasses in the car prior to each session. During each session she works with the McGee mechanic to time me and my competitors.

Thursday was a test/practice day with heat as hot or hotter than Wednesday. We were the first group on the track to shake the car out after eight months resting in my garage. During

the first session I found a slight vibration in the front suspension, and as I pulled into the garage the clutch slave/master cylinder gave up. The Lotus’ gearbox is a five speed non-synchro Hewland. I use the clutch only when I start. During the race I shift without using the clutch.

We solved the vibration problem, raised the tire pressures 2#, bled the clutch slave cylinder, and went out for our second session. In this session I practiced with several cars in my group, two Lotus 23Bs, and the Lotus 19; and several Elvas plus all the Porsches and the Fer-rari. I got the Lotus down to competitive times, 1:57-1:59. Coming into the garage my clutch slave cylinder gave out again. As I ran only the morning session the McGee guys started to work on the clutch problem, changed to fresh tires and cleaned up the car for the remainder of the weekend.

It is 6:45 AM and the coastal fog lingers in the canyon below the still empty parking lot, cloaking the serpentine asphalt road course

that winds around the still mossy green hills laden with morning dew. One is compelled to pause there in the filtered light for a moment to take in the uniqueness of the location and its beauty. And then the realization comes that what Cypress Point is to golf, Laguna Seca is to motorsports.

An hour later the paddock is abuzz with the sound of pneumatic tools as last minute preparations are made to the cars that will be running in the day’s first event as well as the voices of crew-members and race fans, both fueled on what appears in the cool onshore breeze to be seemingly superheated coffee.

Friday had two short practice sessions. The new tires were sliding and had a lack of grip. My times were 2 - 3 seconds from my practice times on Thursday, and not where I wanted them. For the second practice we raised the front tire pressures and softened the rear shocks. The Lotus was still sliding and lacking grip. We left the settings as is, and prepared the Lotus for Saturday’s qualification race.Saturday’s race was for eleven laps. Because of my off pace times on Friday I was gridded 4 – 5 places lower than I expected, 18th. We use a rolling start behind the “Pace Car”. The Pace car pulls off half way down the front straight. We hold position until we see the Green Flag, and off we go. I gained several places on the start, and but lost contact with rest of the field. The Porsches and the Can/Am cars pulled away and I raced with several of the slower Elvas and Lotus’. On the first lap the Lotus 19 spun in front of me in the middle of turn 11. Fortunately I missed him by about 18’ and continued on. The Lotus still was sliding, and over steering. A Can/Am car, who had a bad qualifying session and was gridded behind me, passed me going into turn 7.

After ten laps the Porsches started to lap me. First going into turn 11 the 908 passed me, but I pulled up on him under braking, and tried to repass on the exit but he accelerated up the track. Next was the Ferrari, then the 917K going into turn 7. He passed me coming out of the carousel, and pulled ahead, but I pulled up inside under braking. The 917K went around the outside of the turn, and I took the inside. Not wanting to cause an incident with a multi-million $ car, I backed out of the power and he pulled away. The slower 910 finally got me going into turn 10 after trailing me for over a lap and a half. I finished 15th.

The McGee guys and I discussed the tire issue, and decided to switch back to the older tires for Sundays race. The older tires were faster in practice and more stable. Sunday was much cooler. I was gridded 15th, and had a good start. A Bobsy/Porsche spun in front me coming out of the carousel on the first lap causing a bit of confusion as to which way he would reenter the track. The “old” tires were really working. I passed an Elva on lap three going into turn 7, and a Lotus 23B going into turn 9. The Lotus is strong under braking, and

I make most of my passes in braking zones. As the race continued, one of the Can/Am cars dropped out as did one of the 910s.

As the race went on, the two cars directly ahead of me in my class, that I am competitive with, were too far ahead to make a run so I dropped my pace, and held position. On lap ten I was passed by the first 908/3, then the Ferrari, then the Can/Am car followed by the 917k. I finished eleventh out of twenty one cars. The two cars directly ahead of me were the only cars in my class ahead of me.

In Vintage car racing, time at the track is not the only item on our agenda. Steve Earle and his team provided each driver and his guest a great lunch each day. I wisely chose Mardi as my guest. There are many great places to dine in the Sonoma area. Mardi, I and several fellow racers joined together each evening for some great food and camaraderie.

We slept in Monday and returned home. We left the car at McGee’s to fix the clutch problem, sort out the front suspension, and prepare for Monterey in August.

IMSA Strips Porsche Of Laguna Seca GTLM Podium FinishBy Tim Cronin, SVR Member

Notwithstanding the high level of activity at the Porsche factory trailers and pit garages, the fans have extraordinary access to both the cars and the crew members, who are surprisingly approachable. If they don’t have their heads in the engine compartment or other recesses of a car, the factory folks thoroughly enjoy answering questions and discussing the myriad facets of their white RSRs. Porsche pilot Patrick Long took close to 10 minutes to talk to a nine-year old kid, explaining the complexi-ties of the 911 RSR.

Wandering through the paddock it quickly becomes apparent that this openness and friendliness is the rule rather than the exception amongst the various team personnel; they are visibly happy to be at Laguna Seca and equally

pleased to have the fans there as well. The sole exception is the large inflatable structure housing the Corvette facility where security is as tight as Lockheed’s Plant Nine in Palmdale.

With the day’s first event, the focus shifts to Laguna Seca’s 2.3 mile natural terrain road course and three days of practice, qualifica-tions and, finally, championship races that included dedicated events for Mazda MX5 Miatas and Lamborghinis, as well as the IMSA’s Continental Sports Car Challenge, the all-Porsche 911 GT 3 Cup series, and the Tudor United SportsCar Championship [USCC].

The GT3 Cup series and the Tudor USCC were of particular interest to Porschephiles, and Sunday’s championship races were more than entertaining.

GT3 Cup racing features semi-professional drivers and privateers competing in GT3 Cup 911s, giv-ing them a venue to develop the requisite skill set for an eventual career in the Tudor USCC. The GT3 Cup series is divided into two classes: the Platinum Cup, featur-ing the Type 991 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars, and the Gold Cup, comprised of older Type 997 GT3 Cup cars exclusively, with each class featuring a Masters Championship for drivers 45 and over. The 911s in this class proved to be the most colorful, sporting outrageous livery that ranged from seemingly gold and silver plated cars to a shark-mouthed competitor that was highly reminiscent of a 1970‘s Navy F-4 Phantom fighter plane.

Sunday’s championship final deciding GT3 Cup race was an “argie-bargie” affair as the 21 car field sustained multiple spin-outs and contacts that repeatedly brought out the yellow flags. When the dust literally settled, Michael Lewis secured his second championship in the GT3 category only a few hours after taking his first win. Joining the podium ceremonies was David Calvert-Jones, who netted a Masters Podium result with his fourth place overall finish.

As exciting as the GT3 Cup racing was, the Tudor USCC events remained the marquee program.

Unlike the Daytona, Sebring, and Long Beach USCC events, IMSA split the Tudor USCC Grand Prix of Monterey into two separate two-hour races on Sunday: one race for the Prototype Challenge [PC] and GT Daytona [GTD] class cars, and a second race for the Prototype [P] and GT Le Mans [GTLM] class cars. These two races constituted Round Three of the GTD series and Round Four of the GTLM series, respectively, for the 2014 USCC season. In contrast to the Sebring USCC race, these two races may have been caution-free, but they were far from action free.

In Sunday’s first race of the day, the GTD event, the Porsche 911 GTD teams battled Audis, BMWs, SRT Vipers, Aston Martins and Ferraris and emerged with a podium finish and the season driver points lead.

Andy Lally and John Potter co-driving the number 44 Porsche 911 clawed their way up from their 19th qualifying position to finish in a podium-worthy third position. Their win permit-ted them to take over the GTD point lead; Lally and Potter now have 87 championship points,

tied for the lead with Ferrari drivers Bell and Sweedler. Right behind Lally and Potter was the number 22 WeatherTech Porsche 911 piloted by Leh Keen and Cooper MacNeil, finishing fourth. Keen and MacNeil are now in fourth place in championship points, only five points from the lead.

The number 17 Falken Tire 911 RSR earned the best finish for a Porsche in the two hour GTLM race run later Sunday afternoon. Porsche factory driver Wolf Henzler started the race, running the privately entered 911 RSR as high as third before turning the car over to teammate Bryan Sellers. Sellers was able to bring the car home in fifth at the checkered flag, but team Falken would gain one spot in the race results by virtue of a penalty assessed, post-race, to the number 911 RSR GTLM entry.

The number 911 Porsche North America 911 RSR factory program car took the checkered flag in third position in the GTLM class, where Nick Tandy and Richard Lietz started the race. However, following a post-race review, IMSA officials, the sanctioning body of the champion-ship, applied a penalty for “on-track contact” with BMW Z4 number 55 in Turn 11 on the final lap of the race. The alleged contact occurred in what was a literal drag race between the RSR and Z4 from the apex of Turn 11 to the finish line. The penalty, the equivalent of a pit stop plus 60 seconds (80 seconds total), dropped the white number 911 car to ninth in the GTLM standings.

Porsche number 912 factory driver Michael Christensen sustained a first-lap shunt in Turn 3, spinning the car after three cars went into the gravel and one came back on the track

hitting Christensen’s RSR. Christensen raced his way back to ninth before pitting at the race’s midpoint. Patrick Long, Porsche’s only American factory driver, fought a damaged front end and a pressing SRT Viper GTS-R in the closing stages of the race. Long exchanged positions with the Viper before the checkered flag fell, leaving the number 912 in ninth place. Following the aforementioned penalty to its teammate car number 911, the 912 car rose to eighth in the final standings.

To say that the Laguna Seca experience was positive would be a gross understatement; the 2015 iteration of the Monterey Grand Prix cannot come fast enough. (The information contained in this article was derived from documents and press releases by Porsche AG [http://www.porsche.com/usa/eventsandracing/mo-torsport], and IMSA [http://www.imsa.com/series/united-sportscar/news]. I have decided/agreed to write a mini review of the new Porsche Macan. Before we get started, I’m putting a disclaimer in that re-

views are very subjective and not being a pro, will obviously have some biases built in. I love Porsche’s and I love my Porsche. We all have different cars, years, colors, interiors, etc. which doesn’t take away from our collective desire to own, drive and talk about them.

The Name There has been much fanfare on the new Porsche Macan and much written in auto journals including test track laps against the 911, on the much awaited SUV “sports car”. The name Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger and combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynam-ics – core characteristics of the new off-road car. Word names at Porsche have a concrete connection with the corresponding model and its characteristics: the name Boxster describes the combination of boxer engine and roadster, Cayenne stands for sharpness, the Cayman is snappy and agile and a Panamera is more than a Gran Tourismo, capable also of winning the La Carrera Panamericana long distance race.

Technical HighlightsDustin Aydt, Niello Porsche’s shop foreman and SVR member, presented a technical forum on the new car during the recent June concours held at Niello’s. The Macan is based on the redesigned 2014 Audi Q5. However, Porsche did not accept the Q5 at face value and its engineers dismantled every piece of the car and tested them against Porsche performance and engineering standards. Based on these results, the Q5 parts were accepted, revised or completely redesigned to meet Porsche’s more stringent requirements.

Key components that are pure Porsche consist of the V6 engines, existing PDK transmissions, suspension tuning, six caliper front brakes, Porsche interiors and instrument cluster and all of those great Porsche “gotta have” options with the price tag to go with it. The two big pure Q5 components in my opinion are Audi’s five-link front end, and the rear axle brakes, fitted with sliding calipers borrowed from the Q5. For those really interested in a Macan, and needing to get into the specific techy details, spend some time with Dustin. He’s a cool guy who is very knowledgeable.

The Look and FeelThe car in the garage area was the Turbo Model (base price about $72K, optioned $87K). Is there really a base model of any Porsche (other than a picture)? It’s time for the personal (touchy/feely) tour. The Macan exterior style is definitely Porsche. With design influence from various models and clean lines, fit and finish is on par with all of the

Porsche line. Under the hood was the V6 turbo engine tucked nicely inside the engine bay. Opening the doors, ones first impression has to be its pure Porsche seats, console, gauges, etc. Being the Turbo model, the Macan comes standard with 18 way power seats which were a delight to sit and form to your comfort level. It was very easy to get comfortable in the front seats. All gauges were easy to view and the various controls and buttons were at a hand’s reach (you may need to read the manual to use some). Moving to the rear seats--well, is not for everyone, especially those over 5’9”. While the seats are good, leg room is iffy (based on the size of the front seat occupant), and the roof rake really limits head room. I’m only 5’10” and I could not sit in the back seat without hitting the headliner (also noted in professional reviews). Do you care? Who knows, but at $90K “I” would expect a 4 door car to seat 4 adults (Panamera, Cayenne). Finally the trunk, well space is pretty sparse. Although you could stack some luggage, it looks like 2 carryon bags laid flat next to each other would cover the trunk. Put another way, it would be an interesting day trip to a Tahoe golf course with four guys and their clubs.

The DriveNo it’s not Monterey, no tops down, no Hwy 1, but hey we need hills, mud, deep ruts, soft sand, ice and snow. After all, you are spending $70 -90K to get off road and test the true engineering of this new car, and don’t we need to feel like we can handle the Dakar Rally. Just kidding! I met with Pat Burns, Niello Porsche and after some chit chat where I asked Pat why the Macan? “The luxury crossover market is the fastest growing auto market and Porsche could not afford not to”. “That’s where the demand is.” His comments seem true as everything coming in is sold and there is a waiting list for orders. Some further research shows this segment grew 185% since 2007 and is projected to grow nearly 4% annually through 2024. The Turbo was not available so the test drive was in the Macan S (340 HP). Once inside If you’re familiar with the newer Porsches, then you’ll be right at home in the Macan. The PDK layout and center console are the same.

The drive consisted of straights, twists, turns, fast stops and freeway. On the way out I left it in standard drive mode and let the PDK do the work. That really didn’t last long. Not that the PDK didn’t do its job, it did, just not as fast as I wanted. Suffice it to say, you can feel real confident that the Macan with the PDK in drive will comfortably take you anywhere you want to go in normal driving. But hey, it’s a Porsche and aren’t they made to be driven? The Macan is really well balanced for an SUV with minimum body roll even in quick turns. Handling is more like our sports cars, I was surprised. Performance was good. Quick pick up from stops and good power out of turns. I had fun putting my foot to the floor again, again. Gas mileage? Hey, it’s a test drive!! The Turbo must be a blast! The Macan was easy to drive hard into and out of corners. While not a 911 or Porsche’s two seat models, it certainly is no slouch. Fast stops produced no brake fade and they were straight with minimal dive. I must say for an SUV, I was really having fun. Entering the freeway I was thinking, well probably not much, and the next thing I know we’re already cruising back. Very quiet cabin, comfortable ergonomics, you could have Google driving.

SummarySo did Porsche hit the mark? I don’t know. Folks buying this car will all have different criteria, wants and needs. Given Porsche’s major competition in this segment are SUVs from BMW (X3), Audi (Q5), Range Rover (Evoque), Mercedes (GLK) and Mercedes (GLA AMG 2015?), none can compete in the performance arena. I will say this. If you are in the market for a luxury Small Crossover SUV, go drive the competition, then drive the Macan. I bet I see you at one of the functions in a new Porsche.

The Macan is all Porsche. Back seat aside (my comments above), get on Interstate 5, put it in cruise control, turn up the tunes, sit back and comfortably cruise to Red Bluff. Then put the PDK in manual and stay with the gang running Hwy 36 (maybe the best 140 miles of twists and turns) over to the coast on the Eureka run. You choose. Go Porsche!

A special thanks to Dustin, Pat and Niello Porsche.
