Editor’s Note

From the GM's Desk …….

Unlike the United States or for that matter even Europe, the Indian refilling

Industry takes a larger share of the aftermarket than the remanufacturing

industry. However, the refilling industry is by and large unorganized. This has

led to association of a poor image in the minds of Indian consumers particularly

the corporate consumer. OEMs are quick to capitalize on this.

The cover story this month looks at various aspects of organized and

unorganized refilling. We look at three major market movers in the organized

refilling sector and how they are changing the perception of the Indian

consumer.

The need of the hour is moving the unorganized segment to the next level. This

can be achieved through proper training.

Recharge India takes the first step in this direction by printing and publishing

the Remanufacturing Instructions, in Hindi. We hope to bridge the gap by

delivering the technical instructions in the language that many more people,

particularly the people who actually do the remanufacturing will understand.

We are sure that you will enjoy this issue.

Sincerely

Cover Story

First of all, cartridges that are ONLY refilled are referred to in the

industry as "drill and fill" cartridges. This unflattering term describes

what is typically done. That is, the cartridge is drilled or in some cases

opened, filled with toner and then closed. You might be thinking "what's

wrong with that?” The problem with it is that inside that cartridge are

parts that are built to last just a certain length of time, very little longer

than the toner in the cartridge is expected to last - the manufacturer is not

going to put in more expensive parts which last longer than the amount

of toner. These parts are things such as drums, wiper blades, doctor

blades, sealing foams, magnetic rollers and more. Things that the end

user, are unfamiliar with. That is, until they fail and render the cartridge

useless. If the cartridge is only refilled, and these important parts are not

replaced, then it is highly likely that these parts will fail leaving you with a

cartridge that is not suitable for use. This is what is called a “mid-cycle-

failure”

Failure can be anything from printing not looking as crisp or as sharp as

the original cartridge, to vertical or horizontal streaks, spots and/or

smudges, extremely light printing and a variety of other problems. If

the seals in the cartridge have failed toner can even leak into your

printer/copier which can result in needing to have the machine (printer)

cleaned and serviced.

A properly remanufactured cartridge has had all of the internal

components replaced. So you get not only a cartridge that has been filled

to capacity with high quality toner but it also has a new high quality

drum, new wiper and doctor blades, new foams that seal the cartridge,

etc. As a result, your cartridge is like new with the exception of the plastic

shell of the cartridge, everything else has been replaced. Now you no

longer need be concerned about anything in the cartridge failing, it is all

new!

A refilled/recharged cartridge CANNOT measure up to the quality you

get from a remanufactured cartridge. There is a marked difference

between the two processes.

Unfortunately, the consumer weighs everything in one basket. The

consumer does not really understand the difference. The sad part is most

of the unorganized refilliers and so called remanufacturers also are

unaware of the importance or the impact on the quality. The consumer is

often deceived, by those that claim to remanufacture but are, in fact, only

refillers. They land up purchasing cartridges that are not satisfactory and

are not aware that they are probably only getting refilled/recharged

cartridges.

Don't be confused by the jargon.

People often use the terms like recycled, reconditioned, refurbished etc.

either through lack of knowledge or to confuse.

Remanufactured Cartridges Versus Refilled CartridgesWhat's the difference?

The difference is huge! The following definitions and explanations should clarify things.

Actually there is no such thing as a “recycled cartridge”

Recycling is taking a product or material at the end of its useful life and

turning it into a usable raw material in order to make another product,

thus diverting it from the waste stream or from ending up in a landfill (see

landfill definition).

So, technically speaking, when the cartridge is at the end of its useful life

(having been refilled or reconditioned many times) then the unusable

parts such as plastic of the shell, the aluminum of the magnetic sleeve,

the rubber and steel of the PCR etc. are sent to be recycled (to be turned

into raw material for another product).

In the context of the remanufacturing industry, the term “Recycled” is a

generic term that does not necessarily refer to the process or technology

used to manufacture a product. Both remanufactured cartridges and

refilled cartridge (a cartridge that is recycled using open-n-fill method)

can be labeled as recycled cartridges despite huge differences in their

recycling processes. The same applies for reconditioned or refurbished

cartridge.

Refurbishment is the process of maintenance or minor repair of an item,

either aesthetically or mechanically.

Servicing and/or renovation of older or damaged equipment to bring it

to a workable or better looking condition. Refurbished goods are of older

model and usually in worse condition than reconditioned.

Servicing, readjusting, and recalibrating equipment or instruments to

bring them to near-new or original operational level. Reconditioned

goods are of later model and usually in better condition than

refurbished.

Remaking of something back to its original specifications, by carrying

out repair or replacement of parts as necessary.

Rebuilding, repairing, and restoring an equipment or instrument to

meet or exceed Original Equipment Manufacturer's (OEM)

What is recycled cartridge?

The term “recycling” is defined as follows:

performance specifications. Sold and serviced usually by third-parties,

remanufactured items carry a warranty different from the one provided

by the OEM.

So, although some people still think of them as the same, there is a big

difference between remanufactured and refilled cartridges. A refilled

cartridge has been drilled out and refilled with new toner inside which is

also known as "drill-n-fill" method. Since the drum and other parts are

not reconditioned or replaced, refilled cartridges can cause many

problems. Recycled cartridges using "drill-n-fill" method may damage

your equipment. In fact, refilled cartridges have given the

remanufacturing industry a bad reputation.

Remanufacturing process involves disassembling, cleaning, refilling

toner, replacing appropriate components, print testing and repackaging.

Remanufactured cartridges are those that have been remanufactured for

one more cycle of use. Remanufacturing process involves disassembling,

cleaning, refilling toner, replacing appropriate components, print testing

and repackaging. A good remanufactured cartridge meets or exceeds the

quality standards of a new cartridge.

1. Completely disassembled

2. All components inspected, separated and cleaned

3. New drum installed

4. New wiper blade installed

5. New magnetic roller installed

6. Toner container filled with new toner to originalspecifications

7. Toner container sealed with pull-out strip to prevent leakage

8. Cartridge reassembled and tested on proper equipment

9. These cartridges are in effect are rebuilt from the ground up.

Although chips on cartridges is a vast subject in it self and can not be

possibly covered here, the article would not be complete without

touching this subject, at least superficially.

Smart chip are installed in some cartridges by OEM manufacturers to

keep track of printer functions as well as to make life harder for recyclers

and remanufacturers. Compatible chips are used by remanufacturers

and they are available for almost every cartridge that uses chip. And they

work as well as OEM chips. It is important to make sure that you are using

chips which are not just copies but are covering you under the IP Law. In

a remanufactured cartridge the chip is always essentially changed with a

compatible one. As technology progresses, the chips are getting smarter

and are doing much more than just sensing the cartridge presence or

page counts. The chips now awaken latent features in printers,

distinguish the regions and are communicating two ways to do

calibrations in color and would do a whole lot more in future. It is

important to choose a proper chip vendor, if you want your

remanufactured cartridge to have the same functions and features as the

original.

What differentiates the remanufactured Cartridges?

A remanufactured cartridge is a cartridge that has been

chips which are not just copies but are covering you under the IP Law. In a

remanufactured cartridge the chip is always essentially changed with a

compatible one. As technology progresses, the chips are getting smarter

would do a whole lot more in future. It is important to choose a proper

chip vendor, if you want your remanufactured cartridge to have the same

To conclude what differentiates the remanufactured cartridges from

everything else is the process, the equipment and last but not the least -

the attitude. If you want to peddle an inferior product labeling it as a

superior product, you are hurting yourself and the industry as a whole.

The consumer will get educated today or tomorrow and start the weeding

process. As an industry, we need to be clearer in our perceptions so that

we can project ourselves better. The consumer should be in a position to

make an informed choice between the two.

Future Gr aphics Imaging Cor por at ion Releases

‘Comprehensive System Solution’ for HP CP3525/CM3530

Los Angeles, CA – FGIC is pleased to announce a first-to-market release

of a ‘Comprehensive System Solution’ for the HP CP3525/CM3530.

This ‘comprehensive solution,’ which is one of three released in just two

days, includes an OEM-like sub-6-micron chemical color toner

specifically designed for this engine and a co-engineered OPC, chips,

patented doctor blade cleaning tool, and sealing system.

Most aftermarket toners for this engine are

conventionally produced, which not only

incurs greater costs for the supplier, it also

results in poor yield and overfilling of the waste

hopper. Lab testing at FGIC has consistently

demonstrated outstanding results for yield,

background and image density.

The HP CP3525 is positioned for the SMB

channel and replaces the CP3505. The

CM3525 is a new addition to the growing HP line of color MFPs.

Since CSS was started in May of 2006 it has help launch over twenty-five

high-quality first-to-market matched systems of critical engine releases.

But CSS is not only about quality matched systems, it is also about the

requisite support and education necessary to help remanufacturers build

and sell to diverse markets all over the globe.

The ‘Comprehensive System Solution’ for CP3525 is in stock now and

ready to ship from convenient FGIC locations around the globe.

Because the OEM has a swivel element on its OPC

drive gear axle, FGIC also developed a specialized

element with ease.

The HP P2055 is a low-cost 35ppm SOHO printer

that replaces the P2015. The P2035 is even lower-priced ($199) 30ppm

market just a few months, but already are becoming widely popular in the

marketplace. Starting prices of just $159.00 USD for the P2035 (30 ppm)

and $349.00 USD for the P2055 (35 ppm) make these an excellent value.

OEM cartridge prices are $89.00 USD for the low yield and $163.00

USD for the high yield, giving remanufactures plenty of room to make a

good margin. Plus the all in one cartridge design makes the learning

curve very simple.

Refilling the world with hope

Printing is an integral part of every business and individual's life today.

With increasing computer penetration in India, there is a greater

demand for printers and peripherals as well. Over the last few years, in

2005, India was ranked as the 18th highest IT spender and it is expected

to move up to the 13th position in 2010. This projection itself shows the

growth the country is experiencing and the potential it offers.

This industry has a rich history of over 20 years in India when it all

started with refilling printer ribbons. Evolving to what it is today, it has

presence all over the country and has filtered down to every village as well

employing lakhs of people in the bargain. The scope of this industry has

now expanded to Inkjet and laser toner cartridges and now, even digital

printing. While this industry has generated tremendous employment

and entrepreneurial opportunities, they are also sensitive to the

environmental demands of today's day and age.

Back in 2005, the print market was projected at Euro 12.81 billion (Rs

Page 20: June-2009

Industry News

69,315 crore) by 2008, a growth of 47.5 per cent from 2003. Of this, the

refilling industry is estimated to be over Rs 1,400 crore, with a year-on-

year growth at over 20 percent in India. The CAGR (compounded

annual growth rate) of the refill industry in India is estimated to be at

12.8 percent for FY 2008-09. This translates to one in five printer

cartridges being perhaps being a refilled one.

The price of a printer cartridge has fallen a great deal in the last few years.

Consequently, so has the price of refilling. Despite the fall in the price of

manufacturer's products, there is still a huge difference in the price point

of a refill cartridge. Creating awareness about this and the fact that using

a refilled cartridge doesn't affect the printer are the keys to ensuring that

this industry flourishes further.

A great many myths exist about using refilled cartridges. With the right

source for refilling the cartridges, however, there is no threat to the

printers. One of the biggest benefits that a refilled cartridge offers,

however, is that of protecting the environment. Across the world, over

900 million empty cartridges are thrown into empty pits every year.

What's worse is that this number is continuously rising. Research has

shown that a laser printer cartridge takes over 450 years to decompose

naturally. More than 3.4 litres of oil is needed to manufacture one single

laser cartridge. In one year, if the world's discarded cartridges were

stacked end-to-end, they would circle the earth more than three times!

But by reusing and refilling cartridges, we could bring down this number

dramatically.

That this industry is here to stay is evident from the recent entry of a

global player in the field. However, what is often missing in these cases is

the knowledge of local business set ups and what really will work for the

franchisees. Our future rests in the hands of success of various businesses

and an environmental health that is not possible if we continue to use

and consume as we do now. Reduce, reuse and recycle is the way of the

future. And the cartridge refill industry is showing the way.

The Refill Industry: A Rejuvenating Industry

About a decade or so ago, computers started becoming the norm around

India. As the use of computers grew, so did the use of printers and

peripherals which gave rise to a whole new industry. One of these was the

cartridge refill industry.

Pioneers are success stories because they possess a vision, a foresight that

others don't. B B Somani, the founder of AbbeeFill is one such man.

Starting with humble settings, he has today set up a business that spans

geographies and businesses. The simple mantra that has seen AbbeeFill

meet with its stupendous success is one that allows their consumers to cut

costs and retain quality. B.B. Somani, CEO, AbbeeFill recalled how the

idea of starting a refill cartridge business clicked when he was working as

an accountant. Since then, it has flourished and today, AbbeeFill has

come from a small room to now having a full fledged factory in Himachal

Pradesh.

But it hasn't always been smooth sailing. “There are no disadvantages of

using a refilled cartridge,” says Somani. “We don't complement

manufacturers we compete with them. The manufacturers are selling

their products at exorbitant prices. For example, HP sells their inkjet

cartridges between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,400. Most fall in this range whereas

the same cartridge can be refilled for Rs 100 or Rs 150. There is a huge

cost difference. The refilling does not affect the performance, it will give

similar or at times better output. But the customer is still not aware of

these benefits,” he adds in typical firebrand fashion!

Busting more myths, Somani adds that cartridges can be damaged when

being refilled. But that happens when those working with the cartridges

are not properly trained. “Today, the entire market is abuzz with

unorganized activity. So even if there are users who have understood the

advantages, they end up going to the wrong places. There is always a

possibility of the customer being cheated because it is not possible to tell

whether something has indeed gone wrong. But Abbee refilling assures

quality and now because of our initiative we are gradually organizing this

sector,” he adds.

For long, the computer peripherals sector in India has been an

unorganised one. But thanks to the efforts of Somani, at least one

segment has the chance of getting organized.

“We have launched an ad campaign that will make people aware of the

pros and cons of this service. This is how we plan to approach an

individual customer and explain to them what are the advantages of

refilling,” says Somani.

Although it may seem that the company is on commercial overdrive, they

are also aware of their environmental responsibilities. “An inkjet or laser

cartridge takes three-and-a-half litres of oil to manufacture. It is a precious

resource and it will be better for our future if this is used economically. It

takes 800 years to decompose! Therefore, by not refilling, you are making

way for more and more cartridges to be used and increasing pollution,”

adds Somani explaining the hazards of not refilling. While it is well and

good for major printer manufacturers to warn users against the uses of

refilled cartridges to ensure higher sales, they seldom take into account

the massive burden this will put on the environment.

But it isn't only the environment that will be 'saved'. “Saving is the biggest

advantage. There are massive savings because refilling saves the customer

from buying a new cartridge every time the ink gets over. Refilling allows

re-use of the same cartridge for at least five cycles. If one can re-use, it saves

you the cost of buying,” says Somani. All of us can easily calculate the

money saved by refilling to further emphasize the point!

AbbeeFill is also a consumer-friendly company in the sense that despite

the efforts of most manufacturers, they are able to continue to service

their clientele. “To save their market share, they (major printer

manufacturers) have come up with a new strategy whereby they continue

to launch new printer models often. The design of the cartridges also

changes with every model. So till we do our homework on the new

product, they have earned their profit,” says Somani. But AbbeeFill is up

to the task and have shown tremendous speed and adaptability in

ensuring that their customers do not suffer due to these practices.

Track Engineers, India’s leading solution provider for Cartridge

Remanufacturing and Refilling industry have come up with new

equipment for the ease of refillers. This new equipment is a drill fixture.

Using this you can easily drill the hole in the cylindrical toner cartridges.

hole instantly as the cartridge sits in the fixture easily. After you fix the

cartridge and drill the hole, the waste cut out material of the toner

cartridge does not fall into the cartridge.

You can then remove the old toner powder, fill the new toner powder and

fix a label to seal the cartridge. Indigo Prints Smart Pvt Ltd the associate

Company Profile

K.S. Liew has a clear picture of where he wants the Jadi Imaging Group of

Companies to eventually land in the aftermarket landscape.

“Our vision is to be the biggest independent toner manufacturer in the

world by 2015,” said Liew, executive chairman and group CEO of Jadi.

“With our globally competitive high-quality products, we are optimistic

that we can further expand our operations and achieve our vision.

” Jadi has set its course to bigger things with acquisitions, growth and

extensive R&D work.

Helped formed by Liew, Jadi got its start as a joint-venture company in

1992 called Technitone to produce toner. In 1999, Liew incorporated

Jadi, acquired Technitone’s assets and took over the business.

The Jadi Imaging Group of Companies comprises the following: Jadi

Imaging Holdings Berhad (JIHB), the holding company which is listed

on the Malaysian stock exchange; Jadi Imaging Technologies Sdn. Bhd.

(JITSB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of JIHB, which manufactures black

toner in Malaysia; Jadi Imaging Technologies Co. Ltd., a wholly-owned

subsidiary of JIHB, which manufactures black toner in China; Jadi

Imaging Solutions Sdn. Bhd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of JITSB, which

manufactures color toner in Malaysia and Jadi Imaging Supplies

If we acquire a sizable competitor and continue growth, we

could easily push up our production capacity to more than

12,000 (metric tons) by 2015. At that point in time we could

claim the biggest in terms of production capacity.

Company Profile

Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of JIHB and a sales and distribution

company in the United States.

Earlier this year, the group was running six production lines, with an

annual production capacity of 5,400 metric tons. In 2008, Jadi produced

just over 3,000 tons of black and color toner. Jadi has looked to bolster

production and efficiency by investing in automated material handling

and centralized dust collection systems in its factories.

“If we acquire a sizable competitor and continue growth, we could easily

push up our production capacity to more than 12,000 (metric tons) by

2015,” Liew said. “At that point in time we could claim the biggest in

terms of production capacity.”

Color capacity for Jadi is about 500 metric tons. Earlier this year, the

company was running at about 60 percent capacity for color, though that

figure is expected to increase since Jadi’s second color line has only been

up and running since last summer.

Reaching that goal starts in the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia,

where Jadi’s main factory and headquarters are located. Across the road

is Jadi’s R&D center and another manufacturing facility.

Jadi is also expanding its reach in the Kuala Lumpur area, where a

260,000-square-foot piece of land was purchased near Port Klang, a

thriving Malaysian port. A warehouse and an R&D center for Jadi’s

chemically produced toner work will occupy the area.

In China, Jadi moved into a new factory this year in Suzhou. The factory,

with one line, produces black toner for the Chinese market.

Jadi has approximately 187 employees, about 150 of which are based in

Malaysia. Eleven of those employees are in research, where Jadi is

pushing a large agenda.

Jadi allocates 3 percent of its revenue each year to R&D.

“Our biggest advances in R&D have enabled us to formulate, develop

and manufacture color toner as well as the high-value black toner,” Liew

said. “In addition, among our ongoing R&D projects is a joint project on

chemically produced toner, which we are conducting with the chemistry

department of the University of Malaya, the premier university in

Malaysia.”

Liew said the company is in the process of designing and fabricating its

own CPT line. “We’re looking to scale that up by the end of this year,”

Liew said.

The company has channeled its attention to R&D to fuel its growth in

responding to what Liew calls a “technically more complex market.” Jadi

is conducting more technical training.

“We conduct both independent research as well as joint research with

our strategic partners,” Liew said. “Our ongoing R&D focuses on both

developing new and higher-quality products to meet the constantly

changing and exacting demands of the industry; and also on improving

the quality of our existing products, including identifying alternative raw

materials to bring down the cost of these products or meet the specific

requirements of different segments of the market.”

Jadi, which is the lone toner manufacturer in Malaysia, holds ISO

9001:2000 certification. In the past, Jadi has been honored as an

Enterprise 50 Award winner, which honors companies that are crucial in

Malaysia’s economy.

“We have also succeeded because of our commitment to providing

consistently high-quality products and services that meet or exceed the

expectations of our worldwide customers,” Liew said. “Our proactive

approach in engaging in regular dialogues, including technical

discussions with our customers, has enabled us to better understand the

needs of the market in general and our customers in particular.”

Jadi calls itself the biggest toner producer in Southeast Asia.

The company exports more than 90 percent of its toners to more than 50

countries, including those in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South

America, Europe and the United States. Approximately 65 percent of

Jadi’s toner is shipped to Asian markets.

Liew, who completed his higher education in the United Kingdom, was a

copy machine salesman in the late 1970s. In 1984, he founded Office

Business Systems Sdn. Bhd., a company that remanufactured, sold and

serviced copiers.

“We became the biggest distributor of reconditioned copiers in Malaysia

and we consumed a lot of toners ourselves,” said Liew, relating how he

got his start in the toner business. “In 1990, I considered making toner

Page 31: June-2009

ourselves because at that point toner was hard to come by.”

The company eventually bought toner technology from a Swiss company

and expanded its business.

Liew oversees a company management philosophy that includes

enhancing shareholder value, adhering to good governance practices, a

commitment to quality and investing in R&D.

Liew mainly though points to employees as being Jadi’s backbone.

“We believe our employees are our biggest asset as their skills and

collective contributions are critical to the success of our company,” Liew

said.

“We practice an open management style to encourage honest and

effective communications among our employees and seek opportunities

to allow our employees to continue to enhance their knowledge, skills

and creativity.

We seek dedication and loyalty from all our employees to enhance our

competitive position in the industry.”

Liew commented on the high degree of knowledge at Jadi, including

much staff expertise in the remanufacturing of cartridges. Though the

company has no plans to go into that side of the aftermarket, it has

conducted cartridgeremanufacturing training for customers in Malaysia,

Vietnam, China and India and aims to eventually expand that training to

other customers.

Expansion beyond its current framework is clearly on Jadi’s to-do list.

“Besides the organic growth we’ve been undertaking the past few years,

we are possibly looking at some more acquisitions, which we believe will

happen in the next couple years because there are a lot of cheap assets for

sale out there and they get cheaper by the day,” Liew said.

In Malay, one of the meanings of Jadi is “succeed.” Even in rough

economic times, the company is doing just that.

“While the economy is tight and challenging, we are still pretty optimistic

with our own growth because we feel we have the competitive edge to

compete and also take some market from our competitors,” Liew said.

The Lyra

Lyra recently released its updated toner cartridge forecast for the years

2007 through 2012. Despite the economic downturn, Lyra forecasts that

the total laser printer and MFP installed base and total toner cartridge

shipments and revenue will grow through 2012.

However, not all segments will experience growth, and the majority of the

growth will occur in the color and MFP segments.

The laser hardware market is slowly transitioning from monochrome to

color devices and from printers to MFPs, and the supplies market is

transitioning along with it.

Hardware installation trends comprise one of the largest factors that fuel

supplies shipment trends. Overall, the laser hardware market (excluding

high-end monochrome printers and MFPs and color production devices)

is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6

percent from 2007 to 2012.

The greatest growth will occur in the color hardware segment. However,

although the color laser hardware market is forecast to triple by the end of

2012, it will grow from an extremely small base. The installed base for

color will increase from only 2 percent of total laser hardware

installations to 5 percent.

Although laser hardware installations are growing, toner cartridge

shipments are not growing at the same rate. For the last several years,

print volumes per machine have been dropping, which affects toner

cartridge requirements. However, with increasing installations and

declining use, the monochrome toner cartridge market is still expected to

by Cortney Kasuba • Lyra Research grow throughout the forecast period.

From 2007 to 2012, Lyra forecasts a CAGR of 4 percent. Separating

printers and MFPs, it becomes clear that the greatest opportunity for

growth is in the MFP market. Although this market is smaller than the

printer cartridge market, its growth is forecast to be more substantial. In

contrast to the monochrome market, both installations and cartridge use

are forecast to grow for the worldwide color laser printer and color laser

MFP markets. This will have a positive impact on toner cartridge

shipments for the color laser segment. While the CAGR for

monochrome toner cartridge shipments is forecast to grow by 4 percent,

the CAGR for color (CMYK) toner cartridge shipments is forecast to

grow to just more than 12 percent. The majority of the cartridge growth

in the color arena is forecast to come from MFPs, especially A4-size

Machines.
