This weekend it is our Open Day and, again, I am absolutely sure that we will all contribute and show how proud we are of each other and of our school. Today I have heard the prefects practising their speeches, seen students, who will be guides, practising their route and helped staff put the finishing touches to displays; I would like to thank in advance all the staff and students involved for making this an excellent day. Next Saturday, 7th October, is our 4+ and 7+ Open Morning and we will also need student helpers and guides for this event; I will send out a separate message next week. HEADTEACHER’S NEWS

Mr Stubbs has experienced the pleasure the IAPS Headteacher Conference on Wednesday to Friday this

week, listening to the wisdom of the great and good about the future of education. I wish him a safe flight

home and I look forward to what he has to report back.

Back in the world of the Junior School, life is busy as usual. Students have been immersed in their lessons and

continue to take part in the full extracurricular programme that we offer. I was especially impressed with Ria

(UIJ) who took part in two major golf tournaments during the summer holidays. Ria won at Celtic Manor in

the Kids 2017 British Championship and she came third in the Wee Wonders 2017 British Championship

Grand Final well done Ria, a fantastic performance and I suspect that we will hear more about her successes

at golf in the future. Chigwellians have been demonstrating their sporting talent at home too. The U13’s did

exceptionally well at Bishop’s Stortford College this week and we wish them good luck next Saturday in the

regional round of the ISFA 6-a-side competition here at Chigwell. The UII football team are also progressing in

the IAPS national football tournament and we wish them the best of luck in the coming games. Unfortunate-

ly, the U13 girls narrowly lost their hockey match to Ipswich in the ISHC cup; it was a very close game. Howev-

er, the U12 girls’ hockey team did very well when they competed against Forest School on Tuesday.

This week also saw the first of our catering committee and school council meetings of the year. It was fasci-

nating to hear the students give their opinions and fresh ideas as to how the School can make steps forward

to make life even better at Chigwell.

This weekend it is our Open Day and, again, I am absolutely sure that we will all contribute and show how

proud we are of each other and of our school. Today I have heard the prefects practising their speeches, seen

students, who will be guides, practising their route and helped staff put the finishing touches to displays; I

would like to thank in advance all the staff and students involved for making this an excellent day.

Next Saturday, 7th October, is our 4+ and 7+ Open Morning and we will also need student helpers and guides

for this event; I will send out a separate message next week. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Finally, I would like to remind everyone to follow @chigwellschool on Twitter for up to date tweets about

daily life here in school.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Book of the Week: The Abominables by Eva Ibbotson

A hundred years ago, in the Himalayan peaks of Nanvi Dar, the daughter of an English earl is kidnapped by a huge hairy monster.

In a secret valley Agatha Farley is introduced to a family of motherless yetis and de-votes her life to their upbringing. She teaches them to speak, tells them stories and insists on polite manners.

But as the decades pass, tourists come to the mountains, a hotel is built and yeti-hunters arrive. Agatha knows that there is one place in the world where they would be protected - her ancestral home at Farley Towers. When a boy and his sister stum-ble upon her hidden valley, she knows she has found the courageous people who will carry out her plan.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

This year we are once again supporting the local homeless

charity, Streets2Homes. For more info, please do visit

their web site.

Pupils are invited to bring in Harvest gifts any day next week—a letter from Mr Stubbs

has been Chigwell Posted to you giving further details.

All donations should be taken to the Chapel.

LII WRITING WORKSHOP

On Wednesday some of our LII and UII pupils attended a workshop for National Poetry Day.

They worked with poet Kate Williams on poems linked to woods and forests.

Please read their recipes below for Winter Wood:

10,000kg of timber

A sprinkle of disintegrating leaf litter

A handful of wildlife

A pint of amber

Stir it up with a jug full of rain

Add a herd of deer

Add a bottle full of sound

A hill full of moles

A planet sized ball of moss

Boil in a campfire for a split second.

Chiji LII

A RECIPE FOR A WINTER WOOD

MIX

A pot of whiskers A necklace of green

A jug full of mud

STIR

Adding a pinch of fur Ripped from a bear

FREEZE

With a breeze And a scream of thunder

SET

On a beach But don’t let the badger reach!

SERVE

With terror And a sprinkle of rain.

Max LIIT

A RECIPE FOR WILD WOOD

WARNING: if made wrong Or stirred too long

Unnatural things will appear They’ll make you scream or shed a tear

MIX

A pair of whiskers

ADD

A pinch of fear

CRUSH

A pot of eyeballs extracted from a deer

STIR

A splash of brown

BLEND

A sting of nettles

KNEAD

A slice of mud dipped in a flood

WHISK

A grave of haunts

ADD

A panic of hoots

POUR

A gasp of wind sprinkled with some roots

……………………………………………………………………………….

And if you want some more glam

Listen to this section and sprinkle with rabbit fur and

spray with peace for decoration.

Now finish your snack because you won’t want to

come back to this creepy wood.

Holly LIIA

Mix together:

A nettle of green

A sky of blue

Add in a drop of dew

A pinch of a silk knot.

Blend in pointy ears in a pot

Then add a rumble of thunder

A large sprinkle of wonder

A river of rain

A boiling pan of pain

A scurry of tiny paws

Add a mouthful of razor jaws.

Freeze in an icy stream,

Decorate with a piercing scream.

Serve spooky with furry tails

And a handful of gnarly brown nails.

If you want more spice

Sprinkle the stench of the muddy air

To make it taste nice.

Kayla-Rae UIIJB and Lucy UIIK

The Scouts started the year with two "taster sessions", allowing last year's troop to demonstrate

to potential new recruits some of the skills they have learned. After building a rather impressive

collection of bonfires last week, they shared the delights of a campfire this week, teaching the

third formers all our favourite songs!
