Art competition

Pouto and Arapohue schools joined together to celebrate Matariki. The students were assigned into mixed groups and rotated around a set of activities including kite making, learning the art of the poi and painting stars. “Pouto School warmly welcomed our students in a traditional way, and they mixed well, sharing food and enjoying socialising. It was an awesome day full of fun for everyone and a great opportunity for school collaboration,” said Arapohue School principal Diana Russek.

Grandma was thrilled, along with her little sister when young Angel Rose Neho joined strapping pig hunters and crusty fisherman to take out two children’s prizes at the Paparoa Hotel wild boar contest. Angel Rose won fishing gear for the average weight snapper as well as second place in the children’s snapper contest with the same fish. Proceeds from an auction of the fish caught in the competition went to Paparoa School, although the prospect of a greater boost in school funding was prevented after Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries red-carded a plan to auction the 16 wild boars caught.

The children’s paintings will be on display for the public to vote on at the Dargaville Arts Association’s Winter Art Fair being held at the old ANZ building from July 6-18, and thereafter at the Muddy Waters Gallery, corner of Parenga and Kapia Streets, Dargaville. The children’s Matariki painting event was sponsored by Fosters Home Decorating, The Kaipara Lifestyler, Dargaville Arts Association and for first, second and third prizes by Wrightsons Real Estate.

Poppies for Gallipoli by Ann Morgan

Beth Dalebrook, originally from Maungaturoto, now lives in Whangarei, and went to visit her friend Mary Corker on a day she was knitting red poppies.

“Mary is 93-years-old and doesn’t have an idle bone in her body, she is always doing something like knitting toys and clothes for underprivileged children or coats for sick penguins,” said Beth. “She was knitting poppies for anzac day and inspired me to do the same.”

Beth knitted 98 red poppies in total which she gifted to the Maungaturoto Rotary Club, to do with as they pleased.

“It was a pleasure making each one, and I thought it was for a very good cause. Lest We Forget. It was done as a labour of love.

“I went to Gallipoli about 20 years ago, and found it to be a very moving experience. It is a trip I will never forget.”

Rotary passed some of the poppies on to Bryce and Anne Cullen of Kaiwaka who were booked on a cruise to Gallipoli. They watched the commemorations marking the 100th anniversary from the ship and landed the day after.

“When we got to the shore we had time to take in the geographical size

Celebrating Kaipara’s art by Ayla Miller

Artists will soon put their best artwork forward to be judged in the Gilmore Brown 2015 Kaipara Art Awards.

The awards will allow the Dargaville Arts Association and Mangawhai Artists Inc to promote art in the region.

“The vision for the awards is to become the premier art event in Northland. They will provide a vehicle for the members of the two groups to exhibit works, enter a competition which is judged at the highest levels nationally, and to be exposed to the work and competition of other artists,” said Mangawhai Artists Inc chairman, John Pickworth.

“We are seeing the evolution from a grassroots operation, to something that is evolving to a premier awards event.

“It will also give us the chance to showcase the very best of what we

have, not only in artistic endeavors but also tourism and our products.”

There will be three categories consisting of painting and drawing, adornments such as jewellery and clothing and three dimensional art.

First prize is $300, plus a trophy which is awarded to the winner of each category. There is also a people’s choice award.

Entry forms are available from The Kauri Museum website. The artworks will be exhibited at The Kauri Museum from August 8 until September 18.

Entry forms must be received by the Kauri Museum by July 31 and the judging will take place on the evening of August 7.

“We placed poppies at the pine tree at Lone Pine, the tombstones at the mass grave, some on named memorial stones, a couple on guys from Southland and Otago and at Chunuk Bair — the final position the Kiwi’s reached.

Time for change by Ann Morgan

Matakohe School is farewelling principal Margaret Hutchinson at the end of this term, after 15 years of service to the community.

“That’s fifteen years of commitment and dedication, along with a passion for seeing children achieve their goals,” said teacher Helen Reynolds.

“She has a can do attitude when it comes to educating children, and her success at Matakohe School stems from her belief that anything is possible, all it takes is hard work and good organisation.”

Ms Hutchinson said she would like to thank the community for the support they have given her over the

years. “I have enjoyed my time here and believe the school is in a strong position to grow.

“I am happy to give my support in any way I can in the future, and Matakohe will always be important to me.”

“I wish you all the very best.”The staff, board, students and

community members both past and present wish Ms Hutchinson all the best in her new position as Principal of Maungaturoto School.

Ladies night attracts numbers by Ayla Miller

One hundred and sixty tickets were sold for Foster’s Home Decorating’s second annual ‘ladies’ night’ in Dargaville on June 25 for an evening of style, sophistication and specials, exceeding the previous years turn out.

Adele Tonkin came away with the grand prize consisting of Maxwell and Williams home decorating items worth $900.

“There were lots of specials and we had 30 percent off store wide, including many items at half price,” said owner Arron Foster.

“We had lots of positive feedback and everyone had a good time.”

Attendees were placed in the draw to win spot prizes when they purchased their

tickets as well as having the opportunity to test their homeware knowledge and be in to win additional prizes.

Chair of Commissioners

In early June the Local Government Commission advised that it would not proceed to push for a single Council in Northland. This means that Kaipara District Council will continue as our local government body, and that elections for the Kaipara District Council will take place next year, October 2016.

One single Council for Northland would have led to consistency of council policy throughout Northland, consistency of dialogue with central government, and alignment on strategic matters. Some of this is important if the region is to lift its performance overall.

We know that much of Northland does not do well in terms of well-being. Of the sixteen regions in New Zealand, we have the lowest life expectancy, the highest dependency ratio, the highest unemployment rate, and the lowest early childhood enrolments. The recently published report published by the Salvation Army, “Mixed Fortunes”, documents the various social indicators.

Relative to the Far North, Kaipara performs well. In fact, the further north one moves, the worse the well-being. However, as part of Northland, Kaipara sits alongside the other Councils – the Far North, Whangarei and the Northern Regional Council determined to contribute to changing the landscape.

Last week, elected members from three Councils, and the Commissioners from Kaipara District Council, met to further explore how we can together lift our region’s performance. Lifting economic performance is important. Our region holds 3.5 percent of the population, yet contributes to just 2.5 percent of New Zealand’s GDP. We need to make it easy to create jobs in Northland.

• The public sector, including local and central government must assist by supporting the private sector, by way of investment in the roading network; by region wide connectivity to the internet – high speed broadband in our towns, and rural broadband outside of these centres; and by making the regulatory framework simpler and easier to work with.

• Central government funds public education. Northland needs to lift participation and success in the education space, from early childhood through to tertiary.

These initiatives, and others that we are discussing, are easy to write, yet challenging to deliver. What is pleasing about the meetings of minds of those belonging to the four Northland councils is that we are at last acknowledging collectively the public sector’s responsibility to address such matters. We have assigned each council work to do, so that we can engage with central government and begin a strategic, long term journey to deal with the issues of Northland.

Gaming Machines

Last week Commissioners received submissions on the Council’s policy on gaming machines. Council is the decider of the number of gaming machines in the District. Having heard the submissions, we decided to continue with the “sinking lid” policy adopted by previous elected members. This means that new licences will not be provided for any extra machines in the District, and that if any venues forgo their licences, this will mean that the total number of gaming machines in the District will decrease.

Saluting volunteers.

It is great to see the Rotary Club of Maungaturoto and Districts and the Lifestyler saluting the service of passionate community volunteers in our District. Thank you Joanna Roberts, Terri Donaldson and Robyn Bruce, and those many others who do so much for our communities.

I should also note the pending departure of Dargaville High School Gateway Coordinator Claudia Guthrie-Oehlinger  to Vanuatu with Volunteer Service Abroad. She has been selected for a 2 year assignment in Vanuatu/Santo where she will be assisting with literacy programs. If you wish to support her with a donation to support her work, check out www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/ClaudiaGuthrie-Oehlinger

Art fair exhibits local talent by Ayla Miller

Soon art lovers will have the chance to view an even wider range of works from the Dargaville Arts Association, with their upcoming Winter Art Fair, held in the old ANZ building from July 6 to July 18.

The fair will serve as a temporary extension of the Muddy Waters Gallery.

“It will allow people to see work they wouldn’t normally be able to see and it gives the artists a bit of room,” said committee member Peter Boyd.

There will be a variety of different painting, crafts, sculptures and jewellery on offer, created over the last couple of years and available for purchase at reduced prices.

It is the first time the association has held the Winter Art Fair but if it goes well they will consider making it an annual occasion.

“It is a chance to remind people what the artists have on offer, to build more interest, and show that we have a huge turn over of work on a fairly regular basis.” There will be painting demonstrations by art association members, and visitors can leave their details if they are interested in art workshops for children and adults in the future.

The doors will be open during the same hours as the Muddy Waters Gallery on the corner of Kapia and Parenga Streets, Dargaville — 10am-4pm and entry is free.

Winter hours for market by Ayla Miller

Stall holders at Dargaville Riverside Produce Market have battled the chilly winter evenings for long enough and from July 2 the market hours will change to noon until 4pm to beat the shorter daylight.

The market, held every Thursday in the Ad Focus carpark on the corner of Totara and Kapia Street, will be five years old in October and has from 16 to 24 stalls depending on the season.

“We hope the new hours will encourage people to come down in their lunch breaks. Hopefully it will work better and attract more clientele,” said Ad Focus owner Debra van Leeuwerden.

“We have a hard core group of regulars who we really appreciate support from.

“It is quite social, people can come down and catch up with friends. We also have a space reserved for a community stall which is free. If you are fundraising for anything you can use it for one week.”

Debra was motivated to offer the car park of her business because she believes there is nothing better than fresh produce.

“Some of this produce was picked this morning and you can’t get fresher than that,” she said.

Gala exceeds expectations by Ayla Miller

Ball gowns, bowties and generosity were on the menu at the Casino Royale themed charity gala dinner and auction, held to fundraise for the Mangawhai Activity Zone, where $42,000 was raised, more than double the original goal.

“We were blown away,” said one of the eight organisers, Jo Lee. “People came in their glad rags, and really got into the whole bond theme. There were about 280 people including the volunteers and it was an awesome atmosphere.”

The money will go toward establishing family barbeque areas at the Mangawhai Activity Zone and it is hoped they will be up and running this summer.

“We raised a lot more money than we expected and as a result there is more in the kitty for other facilities which MAZ will decide how to spend later.

“It made us realise what an awesome community we live in. It really couldn’t have gone any better. Thank you to the community, the sponsors and the

Making bacon in Mangawhai by Ann Morgan

Dan and Angela Klink have owned the Mangawhai Meat Shop for the past three years. He was taught the traditional way to make manuka wood smoked bacon and ham during his apprenticeship with original store owner Alistair Cooper.

Dan’s parents then purchased the store, which he managed before travelling to London and working for an award winning butcher. He then moved on to Melbourne, Australia, learning from another award winning Italian butcher, who taught him how do things the Italian way, particularly sausages.

On his return, he bought the business from his parents and he and Angela work with a team of two apprentices.

“We won a silver medal for our smoked kransky in 2012, and a gold for our french style, toulouse sausage in 2014 in the New Zealand Sausage Competition and we have been asked to enter the New Zealand Bacon competition which is nationwide,” said Dan.

“We have entered our old style middle and hot smoked streaky bacon.

It is good to enter competitions for the experience and it helps get our name out there. Come on in for good old fashioned country service — butchery like it should be. We can also courier meat anywhere in the country.”

They are situated at Shop 4, Mori street, Mangawhai or phone 09 431 4564.

Welcome to MangawhaiHome for Mangawhai artists by Ann Morgan

The Mangawhai Artists Inc has been established for more than 10 years and has now secured a home to call their own in the original museum building.

“We have been trying for some time to establish a home base here and we have finally got it, we are delighted,” said president Jan Grover.

“It is down in the village next to the hall, and will be used as our head quarters and for members exhibitions which will be continually changing. There will always be something bright and new to see.

“We would also like to introduce an annual members exhibition. There have been art trails in the past but we have never been able to hold exhibitions for long lengths of time. This building opens up so many opportunities for us.”

The plans for the future are to build an art centre next to the new museum building.

“Receiving access to this building in the meantime is brilliant as it will give us experience in running a centre and exhibiting,” she said.

The official hand over is on July 14, and it will be administered by the

village hall committee. The artists will be cleaning it up and getting it ready, there is a lot of work to be done on it before a public opening .

Creating the Puriri track by Ann Morgan

The Mangawhai Walking Tracks Charitable Trust are building a new track which winds through part of the Brynderwyns, and the aim is to have it completed in early spring.

“It is a loop track to the Kauri dam, which is on the Tanekaha Falls Track. We are calling it the Puriri Track and it will form a loop back from the dam, taking in some fantastically huge puriri trees. Walkers will venture through some really terrific forest.” said chair Gordon Hosking.

“It will form part of the walking weekend next year.

“The Tanekaha Loop is around nine kilometres long, making a comfortable five hour walk.

“We have various walking tracks such as the Cliff Top walk along the coast. They all have great views, and are regarded as pretty spectacular. The tracks are open all year round.

“We recently opened the Mangawhai Park — Thelma Road track, but

unfortunately we had to close it soon after it opened due to damage from the new subdivision being built.

“Once the subdivision road is completed we can re open it.”

The trust are also replanting part of the Mangawhai Heads area that was destroyed by fire at the end of last year.

“Project Crimson, which is a trust established to protect and restore pohutukawa and rata, have provided some very large pohutukawa trees to be planted in the area that was destroyed.

There is a group who meet every friday morning to walk and anyone is welcome to join.

For more information contact Gordon Hosking on 09 431 5779.

We are the future of the trades by Andy Bryenton

Education is not all academic studies and doctoral theses. For many young people, gaining an apprenticeship provides the chance to get ‘hands on’, under the instruction of a master tradesman.

It’s a better way for some to learn, and it’s one big way that all the businesses on these pages are helping the Kaipara community.

By providing opportunities to those willing to learn, they keep talented youth in the Kaipara. They create jobs in a real way — not the nebulous ‘job creation’ often ascribed to the government. By proving that they have the skills to teach, these businesses prove to their customers that they are both invested in our region and equipped with top-level knowledge.

All manner of industries have rigorous modern training programs in place to foster ‘new blood’ in the trades, and

many go above and beyond to ensure that their apprentices are armed with a huge toolbox of skills. For example, Newman Engineering host weekly study nights for apprentice engineers, fitters, turners and fabricators. This forum allows the theory portion of their training to be shared, and is attended by apprentices from Farrand and Mason - a firm with their own huge commitment to training, having graduated 50 engineers since their founding.

In the electrical trade, a qualification can take over three years, comparable to a bachelor’s degree. Laser electrical currently have two apprentices learning the trade, with one having just graduated

Laser Electrical are dedicated to the future of their trade, training a trio of young electricians

to fully accredited professional. C & C Electrical and Davison Electrical have a similar commitment, ensuring that the ‘sparky’ trade will be strong here for decades to come.

Local plumbing, roofing, drainlaying and gasfitting experts Plumbing and Heating have their own trio of up and coming tradesmen — Josh is in his third year, with Ethan and Sean in

their second year of what can be a 4-5 year program. While Sean, as an adult apprentice, is codifying skills he has gleaned from hands on experience, all must balance theoretical and practical work to master the complimentary trades of their employer.

Glazier Kevin Sowter of Window and Door Services has trained his entire team from apprentices to fully-

fledged masters of their craft. Dustin and Shannon are now fully prepared to tackle any task in the world of windows, doors and glass — and all have passed not only their grades but also stringent police checks for security purposes.

In the realm of automotive repairs, Dargaville Ford have a passion for ongoing training, reflected in their uptake of Ford’s worldwide training program. Young apprentice Adam is making stellar progress toward becoming a Master Tech, joining a team of others who have attained or are working toward this top qualification. At Morfett Autos in Dargaville and Quik Autos in Wellsford

the story is the same. Young people with a hunger for knowledge are making their mark, and will one day be at the forefront of keeping our road fleets rolling.

It’s not only in the ‘heavy tools’ trades where apprenticeships work. Just ask the team at Jean Johnson’s busy Ray White real estate office, where on the job training has seen many of the staff attain new qualifications. Even here, at your local newspaper, we are taking the future of our craft very seriously indeed. New leaders for Lions by Ann Morgan

The Northern Wairoa Lions club have had a change of presidency with Jean Johnson completing two years in the role. She is replaced by Judy Dysart and Marylyn Wordsworth, who are sharing the position.

The Northern Wairoa Lions Club committee farewelled Jean Johnson after two years as president

travelling out of the district to different zones and meeting other members. The club have had lots of different events and the year has been good. We have

raised a great deal of funds for other community organisations, this is what the Lions do. I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.”

“Jean is very efficient and she came up with a lot of fresh and innovative ideas to help us in the community during her time as president,” said Mrs Dysart.

“She is very positive and she was the instigator of many events such as the fashion parades and antique fairs which raised money for NEST and other organisations. We also saw an increase in membership with her as president and this allowed us to accomplish more work in the community. “We would have loved her to continue as president but she is very busy. She will still be an active member and we wish her well in the future.”

The rest of the committee stays the same.

“I had a very interesting time being president,” said Jean.

“It was very busy and I met many different people. There is a lot of

A Vegas wedding by Ann Morgan

Dargaville weaver Susie Petersen recently returned to the USA with her partner David Bellamy for a well deserved break from their busy year farming. He surprised her in Las Vegas and they got married.

Susie came to New Zealand from the USA to work at the America’s Cup in the 90’s and stayed.

She eventually moved to the Kaipara to work as an artificial insemination technician and met David, when working on his cows.

“It’s not every day you meet the man of your dreams with your hand up his cow’s bottom,” said Susie.

David woke up one morning on the holiday and asked if she thought they

should get married and she said yes.“It was a bit early in the morning for Elvis so we chose a little chapel that had a horse and carriage out front and within less than two minutes we said ‘I do.’

“It was a no fuss, shorts and t-shirt, just us and our celebrant Jean Claude occasion.”

They met up with some friends afterwards in San Diego a few days later and had cake and champagne to celebrate.

The little white chapel David and Susie said ‘I do’ in

“Now that we are back home in New Zealand, we are thrilled to be

married and are sure it will be happy ever after.”
