Five of Sox Top 30 prospects on Opening Day roster

The Chicago White Sox assigned 25 players to the Class A Kannapolis Intimidators to open the 2014 season. Right-handed pitcher Tyler Danish, the Sox second round pick (55th overall) in the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft, headlines an Opening Day roster that features five of Chicagos Top 30 Prospects, according to Baseball America. Danish (#10) is joined in Kannapolis by fellow top prospects 3B Trey Michalczewski (#19), OF Adam Engel (#22), IF Cleuluis Rondon (#26) and RHP Andrew Mitchell (#27). Both Danish, the 2013 Louisville Slugger National High School Player of the Year, and Rondon, whom the White Sox acquired in last seasons trade with Boston for Jake Peavy, are two of the 10 players that also spent time on the Intimidators roster in 2013. Ten members of the White Sox 2013 draft class will open the season in Kannapolis, including Danish, fourth rounder Mitchell, sixth rounder RHP James Dykstra, and seventh rounder Michalczewski, whom Baseball America tabbed the Best Power Hitter in the White Sox 2013 draft class. Catcher Omar Naraez, a Rule 5 draft pick from Tampa Bay this offseason, will also start the year with the Intimidators. A pair of former North Carolina collegians are coming to Kannapolis. Former Charlotte 49ers hurler Tyler Barnette is returning to the area after making his professional debut last season with Advanced Rookie Bristol. The right-handed pitcher, who was named Atlantic-10 Freshman of the Year in 2011, was drafted by the White Sox in the 14th round of the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft. Catcher Jeremy Dowdy, a former standout at Appalachian State, appeared in 31 games for Kannapolis in 2013. The Intimidators roster comprises 13 players who spent time on Roses Great Falls Voyagers team, which went 48-28 en route to a playoff appearance, in 2013. Outfielder Jacob Morris, who spent his entire professional debut in 2013 with the Voyagers, was named to the Pioneer League All-Star Team last season.

2013 SEASON REVIEW The 2013 season for the Kannapolis Intimidators marked the 19th year of professional baseball in Kannapolis and the 13th year as the Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. Between the lines, the team set several individual and team records, including the third no-hitter in Intimidators history. While the Intimidators finished 61-76, fifth-best overall in the South Atlantic Leagues Northern Division, manager Tommy Thompsons squad enjoyed a strong finish to the season. Highlighting the season, second baseman Micah Johnson ran his way into the record books with a franchise record 61 stolen bases in just 77 games before earning a promotion to Winston-Salem. Johnson finished with 84 swipes bags, best in Minor League Baseball and worked his way up to Double-A Birmingham by the end of the year, helping the Barons to the Southern League championship. Johnson was named to the South Atlantic League Annual All-Star Team, the first Intimidator to earn a post-season superlative in two years. On June 5, three Intimidators pitchers combined to throw the teams first no-hitter since 2010 and just the third no-no since the team became a White Sox affiliate in 2001. RHP Braulio Ortiz spun four strong innings before reliever RHP Adam Lopez tossed two blank frames of his own. RHP Joe Dvorsky secured the gem with a perfect inning as Kannapolis shut out the Hagerstown Suns, 11-0 (F/7), in the first game of a doubleheader. After the team went 27-41 in the first half, the White Sox sent reinforcements for the second half in the form of highly-selected draft picks. Shorstop Tim Anderson, the White Sox first round selection (17th overall) in the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft, made his professional debut with Kannapolis, batting .277 in 68 games. Anderson joined second-rounder RHP Tyler Danish (55th overall) and third-rounder CF Jacob May (91st overall) as the only trio of top three picks in the South Atlantic League by seasons end. Additionally, first baseman Keon Barnum, a supplemental first round pick in the June 2012 First-Year Player Draft, joined the team in the second half. The Intimidators managed a 34-35 record in the second half of the season. The Intimidators ended the 2013 season on the highest of highs on Sept. 2 against the playoff-bound Hagerstown Suns. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Jacob May lined the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to walk off the Suns, 4-3, on the final day of the 2013 regular season. The Intimidators trailed 3-0 before plating three runs in the bottom of the eighth to even the score. Mays home run (8) was the first walk off blast for Kannapolis since May 31, 2012. A franchise record eight Intimidators alumni made their MLB debut in 2013, including a pair of 2012 Intimidators pitchers Erik Johnson and Daniel Webb, joining Marcus Semien (2011), Miguel Gonzalez (2010-11), Jake Petricka (2010-11), Andre Rienzo (2010), Josh Phegley (2009) and Charlie Leesman (2008-09).

Rice hit for cycle in 2012

Right fielder Bill Rice hit for the third cycle in franchise history, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored to power Kannapolis past Greensboro, 14-5, on Sunday, July 15, 2012, at NewBridge Bank Park. Rice, who tripled to lead off the eighth inning to complete the feat, had the game-tying and go-ahead RBI early in the game before Kannapolis pulled ahead with an 8-run fifth inning. Rice connected on a second-inning home run to tie what was still a close game, then singled in the third to put the Intimidators ahead for good. He doubled in the fifth before his cherry-on-top triple to highlight his career afternoon. Rice, who joined the Intimidators on May 28 after batting .300 with the Atlantic Leagues Camden Riversharks, played in 60 games with Kannapolis, batting .293 (66-225) with two home runs and 15 RBI. The only other cycle in Intimidators history occurred on July 3, 2008, when Dale Mollenhauer went 4-for-5 against Lake County. Under the Piedmont Boll Weevils moniker, Tom Batson cycled on June 28, 2000 against Hickory, going 4-for-6. No opposing player has ever hit for the cycle against the Piedmont/Kannapolis franchise.

Opening Day Odds & Ends Kannapolis 4-6 on Opening Day since 2004, including a 9-2 win at Lakewood in last seasons opener on April 4, 2013. The Intimidators are 5-5 in the last 10 home openers, including 2-3 on the seasons Opening Day. This is the sixth time in the last 11 years Kannapolis has opened the season at home.

Since the Spartanburg Phillies moved to Kannapolis, N.C., for the 1995 season, a total of 77 players from the Piedmont/Kannapolis franchise have gone on to the big leagues (including 53 since the Intimidators became a White Sox affiliate in 2001), with a franchise-record eight more players making their big-league debut in 2013, surpassing the old mark of seven during both the 2009 and 2010 seasons. On Sept. 4, 2013, a pair of former college teammates made their MLB debuts as RHP Erik Johnson (pictured left) and INF Marcus Semien (right) took the field for the White Sox on the road against the New York Yankees. Johnson and Semien were both on the California team that went to the College World Series in 2011. The duo did not play for the Intimidators at the same time.
