The President’s Pen Dear Angus Friends, On behalf of the Kansas Angus Association and myself I would like welcome everyone to Kansas that is attending the National Angus Convention and espe-cially the tour.

As Kansas Angus breeders we are excited to have the opportunity to host a preconvention tour on Monday, November 2nd. There will be three stops showcasing Angus breeders across the state displaying their best cattle! We are very proud of our heritage of George Grant making Kansas the birthplace of Angus in 1873. So we hope you enjoy fall in eastern Kansas and our hospitality in the heart of cattle country. The holidays are fast approaching and I hope you will include the CAB gift boxes in your gift giv-ing! Anyone who is special enough to receive one will truly enjoy it. The American Angus Auxilia-ry has the Angus gift barn for those unique gifts to give those Angus friends and family. The Kan-sas Angus Auxiliary have the bootjacks with special engravings on them that are also a great item to give. Supporting the Auxiliary’s make those scholarships possible for our youth. Check out the websites and Auxiliary booth while you are at convention. As the year starts winding down and 2016 is on the horizon may the Lord richly bless you and your family this Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Notes & News from Anne Follow Us to Kansas After 11 months of planning , I am very excited to welcome nearly 200 Angus enthusiasts to Kansas - the US “birthplace and first home ” of Angus cattle for the “Follow Us to Kansas” National Angus Convention & Trade Show pre-tour . On November 2 , five buses full of Angus enthusiasts will embark on a tour that will take them to three diverse Angus operations as well as a view of the unique Kansas Flinthills. Besides visiting the host ranches– Mill Brae Ranch, May Way Farms and Chair Rock participants will view cattle from eight KAA members who have joined the hosts to showcase their genetics, enjoy great food and have the opportunity to meet and network with Angus breeders from across the US as well as attendees from Canada and South Africa. An event such as this is not possible without the sup-port and dedication of the hosts and sponsors, I extend a big thank you to our host ranches, spon-sors, bus hosts and those that are displaying cattle. Appreciation also goes out to the many KAA members that chose to advertise in this issue making it possible to print extra copies to serve as a “tour guide” for all tour participants and to be distributed at the Convention. Finally , thank you to the American Angus Association for giving us the opportunity to host the first pre-convention state tour. It has been a great experience working with AAA staff , especially Becky Weishaar, director of Creative Media and Jeff Mafi, regional manager to plan to the tour. The “Tour Guide” is on pages 12-14, even if you are not attending the tour I think you will enjoy coming on the tour with us via words and photos. Follow Us to Kansas, Welcome Home

Angus industry News and information provided by the American Angus Association ® & Certified Angus Beef , LLC.

CAB Achieves Record Sales for 9th Consecutive Year Consumer demand for original brand of beef leads to opportunities for licensed partners Certified Angus Beef LLC reported record sales of its signature Certified Angus Beef® brand for the ninth consecutive year, marketing 896 million pounds of product in fiscal 2015, ending Sept. 30. It’s also the 11th straight time the brand’s network of more than 17,500 licensed partners achieved year-over-year growth. The 1.6 percent increase represented an additional 14 million pounds of product. “In spite of tight supplies and record high prices for a big part of the year, these results continue to drive home the fact that consumers’ purchasing decisions are not based on price alone,” said brand president John Stika. “Rather, it is a price-value decision that they make. Especially as food costs rise, consumers are willing to pay a slight premium for brands that deliver consistently higher quality.” Monthly sales records and category growth Three of the brand’s five best sales months in its 37-year history – Au-gust, July and May– were in fiscal 2015, each exceeding 80 million pounds and reflecting a promotional focus by licensed partners during summer grilling season. For eight months in fiscal 2015, sales exceeded those for the same month in fiscal 2014. Sales of premium steak items (middle meats) totaled 206 million pounds, while sales of end meats grew by more than 14.5 million pounds. Ground beef sales increased 3.5 percent, illustrating the enduring appeal of premium burgers and ground beef’s versatility and convenience in home-cooked meals. The brand’s Prime extension grew by nearly 2 percent, to achieve its highest level of sales since it was introduced in 2000. The brand’s Natural line also saw steady growth of 1.4 percent. Success across divisions Foodservice partners blazed the trail for growth with a sixth consecutive year of divisional record sales. In fiscal 2015, foodservice sales totaled 330 million pounds – a 10.6 percent increase. Nearly two-thirds of li-censed foodservice distributors purchased more branded product than they had a year ago, demonstrating the brand’s ever-growing relevance to chefs, restaurateurs and patrons. Quality-focused retailers continued to represent the largest portion of brand sales: 41 percent, totaling 367 million pounds sold to shoppers. Grocery partners featuring items in its circulars, helping answer the “what’s for dinner” dilemma, enjoyed the most sales. Brand partners in 52 countries tied its record, set last year, by matching the 120 million pounds sold. Licensed partners in Mexico, the Middle East and Central and South America, in particular, demon-strated notable success in marketing the brand’s premium beef to dis-cerning restaurant and retail customers. Marinated fajitas, marinated tri-tips and precooked pot roast were key items driving growth of branded value-added products to its second highest level in the brand’s history. With sales of 23.5 million pounds, an increase of 6.5 percent over last year, processors responded to growing demand for high-quality conven-ience meals for both foodservice and retail customers. Family farmers and ranchers focus on supplying quality beef The family farmers and ranchers raising quality Angus beef that meet the brand’s 10 exacting standards are its foundation; their efforts enable licensed processors, retailers and restaurants to continue meeting con-sumers’ growing demand. A variety of factors, including a historically small total U.S. cowherd, caused the number of Angus cattle to decline more than 8 percent this year. However, thanks to an overall, higher-quality herd, the supply was there to accommodate record brand sales. In fact, ranchers achieved a record-high acceptance rate (cattle meeting all of the brand’s standards) of 27.5 percent, which translated to an addi-tional quarter-million cattle qualifying for the brand, or an additional 64 million pounds of branded product available. “That kind of improvement

doesn’t happen by chance,” said Stika. “It’s a reflection of the efforts of the entire community who intentionally focus on targeting the Certified Angus Beef® brand for the past several years based on the economic signals that have come from the consumer. Our brand continues to help those who raise Angus cattle preserve a life they’re passionate about, and we remain committed to helping ranchers sustain what they have built for the next generation.” The Certified Angus Beef® brand’s 17,500 partners worldwide generate an estimated $6.9 billion in consumer sales annually. Founded in 1978 by real Angus ranchers, it was created with a shared belief that still drives the brand today: that its customers can taste the pride that goes into every cut. Chefs, retailers and consumers rely on the brand to bring Angus beef with unrivaled flavor, tenderness and juiciness to the table. For more information, visit www.CertifiedAngusBeef.com, read the brand’s blog at www.GoRare.com or look for the brand on Facebook, Twitter, Insta-gram, Pinterest and Periscope First-Ever NWSS Angus Pen Heifer Show Entries due November 20 For generations, the carload and pen Angus bull show has been a unique tradition at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo. New this year, exhibitors can enter their registered-Angus heifers in the competition that ranks their ability to present a uniform group of cattle. The first-ever NWSS Angus Pen Heifer Show will take place Jan. 16, 2016, down in the Yards. “We’re really looking forward to hosting the pen show for Angus heifers this year,” says Jaclyn Clark, American An-gus Association events and education director. “The breed’s leading maternal traits will be on display as breeders take part in this one-of-a-kind competition.” For specific details on the bull or heifer carload and pen competitions, please reference the official rules and regulations. Nov. 20 is the ownership and entry deadline for all participants in the carload and pen show, Super-Point Roll of Victory (ROV) and junior Angus shows. No late entries will be accepted, and exhibitors can sign up online at www.nationalwestern.com. KJAA Members, Winter is almost here ! As we make our way into the busiest time of year with calving, holidays, and finals for students, it is hard to believe 2015 is coming to an end. They say that before something new can begin some-thing else must end. Looking ahead to next year, set your goals higher than they were this year. I challenge you to work with your cattle more, find a new contest to try this year at nationals, and make new lifelong friendships. I also encourage you to remember what this season is about and to spend more time with the ones you love. I hope to see you all January 23-24, 2016 in Hutchinson! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Follow Us to Kansas National Angus Convention Tour Participate in a day of ranch tours before attending the National Angus Convention. Last fall, the inaugural Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show proved to be one of the industry’s must-attend events for its membership, education and trade show venues. This year, partici-pants will have the added opportunity to see some great cattle. The Kansas Angus Association (KAA) will host a tour Monday, Nov. 2, prior to the official start of the convention, which is slated for Nov. 3-5 in Overland Park, Kan. The Kansas Angus Tour will allow attendees to spend a day visiting area Angus farms and ranches. Buses will depart at 7:30 a.m. from the Overland Park Convention Center’s courtyard level parking lot. There is also a “drive yourself “ option with thiose tour particiapnts meeting the tour at Mill Brae Ranch at 9 a.m. All tour guests are required to register. “The state of Kansas is home to several prominent Angus operations, and we are looking forward to showcasing their programs as part of the preconvention tour,” says Jeff Mafi, Ameri-can Angus Association regional manager for Kansas and Oklahoma. The tour will make three tour stops: Mill Brae Ranch, Maple Hill, Kan.; May-Way Farms Inc., Baldwin City, Kan.; and Chair Rock, Greeley, Kan. .

Host Ranches Mill Brae Ranch, Maple Hill, Kan. Mill Brae Ranch sits on the northern edge of the Flint Hills, which stretch from Kansas to Oklahoma. The largest area of tallgrass prairie in North America, the rolling Flint Hills still remain intact due to the bedrock near the surface. “We burn the prairie every year from early April on to May, and that’s unique to this ecosystem because the grass thrives on the fire-management practice,” says Mark Nikkel, Mill Brae Ranch managing part-ner. Nikkel says he is excited for people from across the United States to visit the Flint Hills and see what Mill Brae Ranch offers. Guest displays at Mill Brae are: Kansas State University, Alcove Cattle Co., Cline Cattle Co., Mill Creek Ranch and Sunflower Genetics. May-Way Farms Inc., Baldwin City, Kan. Just a few short miles down the road from Mill Brae, the tour setting will change from rolling hills to an urban landscape at May-Way Farms Inc. Owner Jason Flory and his family manage cattle from a 10-acre fescue pasture to 1,000 wide-open acres in the Flint Hills. “A lot of the breeders on display at the May-Way stop will be more of the fescue, cool-season-grass cattle managers,” Flory says. “Participants will see a large contrast of management with a short amount of miles on the tour.” Flory and his family have been involved in the Angus business for 15 years, getting their start in showing cattle. “I think any time fellow cattlemen can network and learn, it’s a great opportunity,” Flory says. Guest displays at May-Way Farms Inc. are: New Haven Angus, Bar S Ranch, Grady Dickerson and April Valley Farms. Chair Rock, Greeley, Kan. Exclusively an artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET) pro-gram in cooperation with Gardiner Angus Ranch of Ashland, Kan., Chair Rock has a unique facility that caters to the growing operation. With han-dling facilities designed with guidance from renowned animal behaviorist and Colorado State University Professor Temple Grandin, Chair Rock is able to move animals through their facility quietly and efficiently with mini-mal stress. Not only is Chair Rock growing with superior genetics, but also with their family. Three families are involved in the third-generation ranch, including the founder, Bill; son Carr; and grandson Chandler.

Follow Us to Kansas Guest Cattle Displays The host ranches and the Kansas Angus Association are excited to wel-come guest cattle displays by KAA members at Mill Brae Ranch and May Way Farms. The guest displays give more members the opportunity to be involved in the and offers a unique way for the KAA to showcase our di-verse Kansas Angus genetics and producers. Displaying at Mill Brae Ranch, Maple Hill

Alcove Ranch is located in the northern Flint Hills near Blue Rapids,

Kan., where they started their registered Angus herd in 1991. Today, they run a strictly registered cow-calf herd with approximately 50 breeding cows. Alcove Ranch relies on artificial insemination (AI) program and em-bryo transfer to capture new genetics to meet herd goals. Their annual bull sale will take place March 19, 2016.

Cline Cattle Company was founded in 1997 by brothers Lance and

Austin Cline of Onaga, Kan. Cline Cattle Company has purchased females from the breed’s most-respected and proven cow families, and has used AI and embryo transfer extensively to accelerate their program. Today, they run approximately 125 head of registered Angus females and hold an annual fall bull sale and spring female sale.

Kansas State University, Purebred Beef Teaching Unit is

home to nearly 300 purebred Angus, Hereford and Simmental cows on 4,000 acres of native bluestem grass. The herd provides an opportunity for hundreds of students to learn about breeding programs for genetic im-provement and practical experience in seedstock marketing. A portion of the cattle are merchandized in the annual Legacy Bull and Female Sale held the first Friday in March.

Mill Creek Ranch, owned by the Dave and Diane Breiner family, is

located in the northern Flint Hills of Kansas. The Angus cowherd originat-ed as Hillsdale Angus Farm in 1946 by Dave’s parents, Vic and Sally Breiner of Norton, Kan. Today, Mill Creek uses AI and embryo transfer extensively to produce moderate birth weight, high performance breeding stock with added carcass value.

Sunflower Genetics LLC has produced commercially oriented bulls

for profit-driven customers for more than 35 years. Owned by the family of Steve and Mary Gleason in Maple Hill, Kan., the operation is home to 350-plus registered cows consisting of Angus, SimAngus and Simmental. Calv-ing ease, growth, carcass traits and overall productivity are their ultimate goals. Sunflower Genetics hosts an annual production sale every third Friday in March.

Mill Brae Ranch

Chuckwagon “Campfire Coffee” Upon arrival at Mill Brae Ranch tour guest will be greeted with the sights, sounds and smells of authentic chuckwagon coffee brewed over a native Kansas hedgewood fire and a selection of fall favorite muffins. This morning treat is sponsored by Harper Industries Inc.- DeWeze. Be sure to visit the Deweze display at Mill Brae.

Lazy K-Bar Chuckwagon

The Lazy K– Bar Chuckwagon is owned by Don and Patty Kueck. The chuck wagon was a farm wagon, found abandoned in a tree row behind an old blacksmith shop in Kingman County, Kansas nearly 45 years ago. Don bought it for a whop-ping $25 and hauled it home. It became a restoration project that continues to this day. Don was able to sal-vage some parts, re-made others, and re-placed all the wood in the bed. Wagons like this were used on the cattle drives from Texas to Kansas in the 1870’s and served as mobile kitchens to prepare meals every day for the cowboys driving the herd. The chuckwagon cook was one of the most important members of the trail drive crew, and nobody dared cross him if they wanted to eat after a long day in the saddle. Some ranches still use the chuckwagon to feed their crews during spring works and fall round-ups. Don and Patty have lived north of Hutchinson, Kansas their entire married lives. Don was a county extension agent for 25 years, then served as a farm manager for 18 years. He is now re-tired. Patty works in administration for a non-profit agency that serves individuals with developmental disabilities. The couple raised Angus and Brangus cattle for many years. Their Lazy K-Bar Chuckwagon has made appearances at family gatherings, small town celebrations, cattle breed association events, western day festivals, and even a couple wedding receptions.

Displaying at May Way Farms, Baldwin City New Haven Angus was established in 1954, when Bill New

purchased his first Angus heifer as a 4-H project. Today, the opera-tion consists of 225 registered cows with both spring and fall calving herds. Managed by Brandon and Jennifer New, Damon New, and Bill and Loris New, they focus on selective breeding for fertility, structural soundness and consistently heavy calves at weaning.

Bar S Ranch became a registered brand by Frank Stielow

in 1946. Three decades later, his son Ken returned to the home-stead to raise his two children, Chris and Stephanie, who are cur-rently involved in the ranch. Stephanie and her husband, David Dickerson, have three sons who are active in the Kansas and Na-tional Junior Angus Association. Bar S Ranch sells around 200 bulls per year and is comprised of approximately 12,000 acres, 800 cows and a small feed yard. Grady Dickerson will also display.

April Valley Farms is a diversified farming operation in north-

east Kansas that includes 300 registered Angus cows, a swine farrow-to-finish operation, and 2,500 acres of corn, soy-beans and wheat. Edmund and Alice Theis purchased the main homestead in April 1956; today their sons, Mark, Larry and Jerry, are involved in the management and daily operations. Cattle are marketed through an annual production sale held the third Sun-day of March, as well as by private treaty.

It is hard to believe that yet another year has almost come and gone. As we begin to celebrate holidays with families and friends, we also begin to look forward to creating a list of year long goals and resolutions. Many of these are easy and others...a little more complex. Yet, together we can ensure that our Juniors are becoming successful young men and women into the next year. For the 2016 year, I challenge you to become a resolution and goal setting role model. By

keeping a positive approach to resolutions and goals, encouraging small steps forward and following up (no nagging) on progress of these Junior-driven ambitions, our Juniors will see what it takes to become successful. These successes do not have to be solely within the showring. I remember when I would set the immediate goal of winning showmanship that day, or simply beating a close friend. I never considered how those inner conversations would continue to drive my professional and academic growth. Setting goals is a practice that is utilized on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. It is a skill that we all take with us through life. As the winter show season falls upon us, I would like for us to set a goal, a resolution of sorts. That we, as an association, will make the effort to support and get to know our Juniors outside of the showring. Many times it is these connections that will last for years beyond the showring. These connections are what Juniors truly remember. Seeing Mr. Holder working as a time and scoreboard keeper during rival basketball games in Argonia. Visiting with the Molitor family as I rang up their groceries at the Kingman IGA. Those casual conversations to show that I was something more than the Santee girl who carried a show stick, or wore the crown. It is time for us to give back beyond the scholarships and showrings. I challenge you to get to know a Junior and adopt them for a year. Find their interests. Build a bond outside of the tack. It is time for us to help guide our Juniors into their futures. It is time for us to help our Juniors set a goal, lay out a positive, progressive plan, and locate communication opportunities. Opportunities away from the showring to “check-in” and see how their year and their goals are moving forward. You may not realize it yet, but perhaps there are Juniors in your area that work at a local farm or ranch - you pass them by everyday and you do not know it. But they do. They will tell you exactly when and where you cross paths on a daily basis. These are the moments that we must grab onto. Bill Gates once said that, “It's fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.” If we do not adopt and acknowledge our Juniors outside of the showring, we fail. Let us learn from these failures. This year, let us get to know our Juniors beyond the showring. The better we know about their personal interests, the better we can help them to become successful young men and women. Our Juniors are our future. It is time for us to invest time and attention devoted to just them.
