JAN-MAY 2012

Food is central to the identity of New Orleans. This culinary arts college, located in the Warehouse Arts District, draws on the city’s rich gastronomic traditions yet aims to be a center for innovation, a research-driven institute for higher learning. The building is organized into three volumes: “craft,” “critical analysis” and support. These volumes are scaled to the neighborhood context, creating a continuous street edge open to the public. A dynamic brick skin wraps them from inside to out. Garage doors open up to allow public functions to take place, like farmers markets on a rainy day. The sunken demonstration laboratory anchors this circulation core. The informality of this space - where the line is blurred between circulation and gathering, and which is constantly on display, reinforces the mission of the school at every moment. From this vantage point, the daily operations of the school become a public performance. The walkways themselves, and the custom roof trusses above, form physical connections that invite the user to reflect on the symbolic connections between the functions of the school - the mind and the hand.

1414 town lake pool & grill

This project establishes a new activity node on the underutilized eastern fringe of the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail in downtown Austin, Texas.

The design finds harmony in the ritual of lap swimming and the rhythm of the water. The proposed lap pool, bathhouse and cafe are drawn together by a steel shade canopy. The sectional relationship of the program is meant to provide a visual connection to the layering of activity on the site, creating moments of pause and momentum. Careful consideration was given to the progression of space from the trail to the pool, considering the meditative preparation for swimming and the slow return back. Swimmers pass through the cool concrete of the bathouse, and then back into sun for an open-air shower; they pass underneath the bathouse on a grand, slow staircase in their descent to the water’s edge.

2020 ross island recreation center

This project explores the reclamation of a decommissioned aggregate quarry on the Wilamette River in downtown Portland, Oregon. The concept is one of nested spaces - a reoccupation of an island within a city, of the water within the island, of the space within a track. In all cases, the relationship between edge and interior strengthens both places.

The proposed rugby field, 800-meter track, steeplechase course, and community performance hall are concentrated to preserve wildlife habitat, creating nested conditions. From this vantage point, a view of the central business district skyline enhances the relationship of island to whole. The site is graded to flood the existing quarry machinery, creating a pedestrian path at safe distance to explore the island’s past. The trail connects by footbridge to a bike trail on the waterfront.

2424 lighting los piletones

As part of a four-week design-build project in Villa Los Piletones, an informal settlement on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, our team outfitted a community-based nonprofit with a renovated children’s library and soup kitchen. The lighting design team prepared new lighting plans for both spaces and created signature fixtures for each based on found materials. The city’s ubiquitous fruit crates were broken down and reassembled into elegant chandeliers that cast dramatic shadows on the dining room’s tall ceilings. In the children’s library, piles of discarded books were folded into playful sculptures that spiral around a pendant light. In this nook for very young readers, stories seem to fly off the shelves into life.

This project presented an interesting challenge: to incorporate an ice rink, toy train depot, playground, and children’s pool into Austin’s beloved Zilker Park. The resulting scheme combines these elements into a land bridge that addresses pedestrian connectivity across the divided site. The berms that support the bridge are oriented towards important vistas, creating a place to watch soccer games to the north, and grassy seating for moon tower gazing to the south. The gesture of the bridge creates a linkage between Town Lake and Barton Springs, iconic water sources of the city. The playfulness inherent in our figure-ground perception of the horizon inspired the site interventions. In the way a child moves around a playground - climbing to the top of a slide, crouching low in the grass to look at a bug - the project attempts to make visitors look again, to look in a new way at this special Austin landmark.ZILKER PLAY BRIDGE

The 2013 Gerald D. Hines Urban Land Institute Competition asked teams to plan the redevelopment of 12 blocks in downtown Minneapolis near Vikings Stadium. We took the position that the new Vikings Stadium was too valuable to sit unused 44 weekends a year. We envisioned a new Vikings Park as the centerpiece of a new urban trail, pulling the stadium into the fold of downtown to create a unique community focused health awareness, education, recreation destinations, and unique outdoor experiences. By actively involving residents to establish the character of the neighborhood, the design empowers Minneapolitans to become H.E.R.O.es of Downtown East.H.E .R .O .es of downtown east

4848 CENTRO DE SALUD DEL CENTRO HISTORICO

critic : wilfried Wang

oct-dec 2011

Situated in Quito’s UNESCO world heritage district, this health center re-imagines the traditional masonry courtyard building to suggest a new era of social equity and openness to health. The joints between tilt-up concrete panels introduce a new level of porosity to the street, allowing what is typically a private garden to become a peaceful public retreat. The building is something of a geode that has been cracked open – the brightness of reflected light inside, with a worn and solid shell on the outside. Those cracks reveal the interior at key moments to the street, suggesting accessibility and inviting curiosity. The more private spaces occur where the wall is more solid. A series of small landscape moments throughout the building establish intimacy within an open environment. These places stand as a foil to the grand plazas that constitute the Centro Historico’s public space.
