keeping families close
Annual Review 2014-2015
“ There’s a sense of sanctuary here. It doesn’t take away the fact that you have a problem, but it sure makes it easier to deal with.”
– Charles Nyabeze, Sudbury, Ont. | Stays at the House with his four-year-old son, Abel, who is being treated for leukemia
“ There are very few places in a hospital that don’t feel ‘hospital-ish.’ Living there can be very draining. So the Family Room was our escape when we needed to be close to our daughter.”
– Bhaskar Murthy, Toronto, Ont. | Used the RMHC Toronto Family Room at SickKids for five months
while his daughter, Eesha, was in treatment
“ I like it here.”– Jack Morgan, 12, Kingston, Ont. | Stayed at the House while recovering from brain surgery
missionTo provide a “home away from home” for seriously ill children and their families to heal better together

Keeping families close
“ I audibly exhale when the House gates close behind me. For being so central, this place feels so set apart. When we’re here, we can be at peace and concentrate on what matters most: helping Chayse and our whole family heal.”
Stacey Richard, with her husband Delanie, parents to Chayse, 12, Jordan, 9, Bailey, 8, and Dixie, 2 | From Spruce Grove, Alta. | The Richards stayed
at the House for 41 days while Chayse recovered from brain surgery.
More than just a place to stay, the House is where families can continue the routines of normal life – cooking and eating together, having fun participating in our wide range of innovative programs and even going to school.
Ormey and Raymond Shim, parents to Rayne, 9, and Saphirra, 2 | From Ottawa, Ont. | The Shims stayed
at the House and Rayne attended our school while Saphirra underwent cancer treatment.
...in our HouseAnnual Review 2014-2015 32 Annual Review 2014-2015
That’s our top priority at Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto.
Whether they are staying at our House or visiting one of our Family Rooms across the Greater Toronto Area, we know that families who stay close to their seriously ill children are able to heal better together. RMHC Toronto provides them the “home away from home” that research confirms brings normalcy to their lives, eases their stress, reduces their financial burden and enables them to be more involved in their child’s clinical decision-making and care.
The impact of RMHC Toronto expanded dramatically in 2014-2015. We were delighted to support a total of 3,132 families in our House and Family Rooms. That’s a 50 per cent increase over the previous year. Our Family Rooms experienced a more than 100 per cent increase in the number of visits. With the demand growing, we opened two new Family Rooms at Rouge Valley Centenary in December 2015 and plan additional ones over the next two years. We’re extending our mission and having an impact on families in numbers we could have only dreamed of just a few years ago.
Throughout this Annual Review, you will meet some of the remarkable families we help keep close. RMHC Toronto made their lives better at a time when they felt their world had been turned upside down. You will also read about the innovative programs we offer families and the generous people who make everything we do possible. In addition to the time and talent people shared with us, we are fortunate that donor contributions increased over the previous year.
We offer our heartfelt gratitude to our outstanding volunteers, donors, supporters and staff who provide RMHC Toronto with the foundation to reach an ever-growing number of families in need.
Sincerely,
Joseph Cooper Stephanie KarapitaChair of the Board Chief Executive Officer
executive message
Keeping families close.
...in our Family Rooms
“ The Family Room was our place to go when we needed a shower, a meal, or just to zone out from the intensity of our situation. Family Rooms are desperately needed by the families who use them.”
Anshu and Mohit Grover, parents to Rhea, 4, and Suchan, 2 | From Toronto, Ont. |
The Grovers used the RMHC Toronto Family Room at SickKids while Rhea was in the hospital.

Annual Review 2014-2015 98 Annual Review 2014-2015
Our volunteers, partners and donors are the heart of RMHC Toronto. We honour their contributions.
VolunteersThe invaluable commitment of time and talent by our 463 volunteers last year made it possible to provide our families with high quality programs and services. Volunteers bring smiles to families and smooth out some of the bumps in the difficult journeys they face. Volunteers support all areas of RMHC Toronto including our Family Services
team at the House, food programs, activity programs, the RMHC Toronto School, special events and our Family Rooms. We are fortunate and grateful for their dedication and compassion.
With special thanks RMHC Toronto said “goodbye” to Jane Marco in September 2015 when she retired after more than 11 years as CEO. Jane led the organization during a period of exponential growth, spearheading the construction of the current 81-family House and the creation and growth of Family Rooms throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Under her leadership, RMHC Toronto grew enormously and serves thousands more families today than when she joined us. We are grateful for and humbled by her many contributions and wish her the best as she enjoys the next phase of her life.
