Brave Heart By Bill and Roxanne Gallagher

Six years ago, our son, Patrick, was born with a rare medical condition, one that caused fluid to back up into his kidneys. Two days after he was born, Patrick was air lifted to Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital where he was found to be too frail to have the errant valve repaired; however, doctors performed surgery which allowed the kidneys to drain, preventing any further damage. Our family spent 85 nights at Hershey Ronald McDonald House® as Patrick bravely faced many surgeries, complications, and hospitalizations. He was ultimately put on the list for a kidney transplant on

November 12, 2010 and a mere three days later we learned they had a match. We were elated and at the same time devastated; nothing was prepared, no money was saved, medical bills made sure of that. After the transplant we celebrated Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, and New Years Day at our “home away from home,” a pleasant respite from the daily hospital and lab visits. A recent expansion allowed for the creation of a well-equipped playroom, where recovering kids spend many happy hours just being kids, free from hospitals, doctors, and shots, if only for a few hours. Their parents are nearby, in the new dining room, drinking a cup of coffee and sharing some friendly conversation. Our story has a happy ending and we thank God for this House, for the fine people who run it, the volunteers, the meals, and the friendships. Words can’t describe how much this has helped, like a refuge from a never-ending storm. We are going to miss the family we’ve come to know and love—they will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Food Check Out Week was celebrated on Tuesday, February 15, as members of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) delivered a wagon load of food, supplies, and cash to the Ronald McDonald House. PFB Board Member, Chris Hoffman, led the program as representatives from each county delivered donations totaling over $13,000.

Jane Lerch, shown left, and her friend Amy Settle, right, made a trip to tour the newly expanded Ronald McDonald House, bringing donations and supplies from The White Rock Civic Association. Jane began delivering magazines to Mechanicsburg Middle School in 2005 and was instrumental, along with Carlisle high school student, Spencer Cavanaugh, in the placement of a magazine collection container at McDonald’s on Walnut Bottom Road, in 2009. For a complete list of all 18 magazine recycling sites, please visit www. rmhc-centralpa.org.

All 47 branches of Members 1st Federal Credit Union will serve as collection sites for aluminum tabs to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central PA. The Recycling Center at Hershey’s Ronald McDonald House was also named for Members 1st as part of their generous contribution to the “Room To Grow” capital campaign. Members 1st Federal Credit Union’s first tab presentation took place on January 26, shown left to right, George Nahodil, Executive Vice President, Retail Delivery, Public Relations, and Marketing; Robert Marquette, President & CEO; Christopher Birch, Hershey Branch Manager; and Amy Leonard, RMHC® of Central PA’s Development Manager.

Employees from The Hershey Company exhibit their culinary skills and prepare a tasty dinner for House guests on Feb. 8. Shown left to right, Teresa Aguilar Lemus, David Brouch, Herbert

Ring, Jr., Kevin Austene, Laura Johnson, Michelle Bentley, Robert Blaszynski, Robert Hadley, Chef

Darren Belnavis, and Al Ferebee.

Before the snow began this winter, three community organizations joined together to plant a beautiful garden which graces the entrance of our newly expanded House. Hershey Nursery, led by Art Schiavo, a full-service local nursery serving Hershey and the surrounding area, donated most of the plants for the garden. Barbara Whitcraft, Horticulture Specialist at Hershey Gardens created the design for the garden and with the help of Linda Grudi, President of the Hershey Horticulture Society, organized the preparation and installation of this garden with society volunteers. Barbara Whitcraft also arranged a donation of 900 daffodil and tulip bulbs from Mr. Jeff Ellenberger of Dutch Mills Bulbs. These were planted in the fall and soon the garden will bloom in vivid color.

Amy Leonard, RMHC of Central PA’s Development Manager welcomes Dan McAllister, Board Member of Michael’s Way, during a visit to the Hershey Ronald McDonald House® on December 9. Mr. McAllister delivered a TouchTunes Jukebox which was donated to the House through the generosity of an anonymous donor who initially purchased it at a Michael’s Way auction and then kindly donated it to delight families. Michael’s Way, located in the Philadelphia area, is an organization with a mission to help the families of children with cancer cope with extraordinary household expenses.

Paula Faralli, Gala Committee Member, stirs the delicious squash soup she made in the kitchen.

Middletown resident, Lib Riemondy, shown left, sews cozy,

colorful blankets and donates them to the guests. Austin Stitzer,

center, was the recipient of one of these snuggly covers on a cold

February day, as his mom, Wendy Dobson, looks on.

Two years ago George Atanasoff was searching for a local children’s charity to bequeath a portion of his estate upon his death. Conferring with his lawyer, he was told about Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania and how we were in the process of a major expansion at Hershey’s Ronald McDonald House. His lawyer remembered hearing about the House from a former office friend, who happened to be the husband of long time House volunteer and former board member, Chickie Bayer. George remembered seeing an article about the expansion in a local publication. Because of this conversation, upon George’s death on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, RMHC of Central PA was bequeathed $25,000 from his estate. It has since become known what a truly remarkable and generous person George was. For

many years, two days a week, George, and his wife, Theresa, made sandwiches and took a bus to downtown Harrisburg to feed the poor. He also left considerable sums of money to two additional charities. To find out how you can leave a legacy to help families and children throughout our region, please contact Kathy Denton, Executive Director, at [email protected] or call 717-533-4001, ext. 151.
