Great Killarney community spirit and support

Recently Killarney hosted two fundarisers to support the Cancer Council through “The Biggest Mornig

Tea”. Thanks to the tremendous work of the Year 11 EALD class, Ms Forsyth, Ms Adlard and the

students across the school, nearly $800 was raised through a student morning tea. Staff then ‘chipped

in’ the next day to support this venture too with the school raising over $850 to assist this organisation.

A great effort Killarney and well done especially to Year 11 EALD class, students and staff.

Wearing it with pride

All students have been adressed again recently at the school assembly and also in year meetings about

wearing the Killarney uniform with pride, and behaving respectfully in the school community and

extended community. The School uniform shop, located onsite at Killarney, stocks all of the

requirements to comply with the expected uniform policy, except for footwear. Footwear

requiremenst are stated clearly in the uniform policy on the KHHS website, with student safety an

important focus. Compliant footwear is essential to complete the expected uniform each day.

If there is a reason why your son or daughter cannot arrive at school in all of the required pieces of

uniform, please supply them with a note of explanation to take to their respective Deputy Principal

before they start their period 1 class. (Ms Woskanian years 7, 9, 11 and Ms Baker years 8, 10, 12)

This is an important step in our uniform process in our endeavour to support Killarney as a uniformed

school.

It also lovely to hear and read about our students interacting respectfully and with care, within the

wider community. A most recent email received by the school this morning reads:

Subject: Student Compliment

To Whom It May Concern,

I had the pleasure of interacting with one of your students this morning at my local coffee

shop.

I had bought 5 coffees, more than I could carry in one trip back to the car. She addressed

me by ma’am and politely asked if she could help me to the car with the rest of the drinks.

She is a fine example of today’s youth, and a credit to her family and your school (whilst

wearing the Killarney heights high school jersey) I believe she may be in year 12. I got a

quick glimpse of her jersey as I was in my car and I think it read ____ ___ ______.

Kind Regards,

Community member

As the Deputy of Year 12 I am extremely proud that the values we support in this school of “Respect,

Connect and Aspire’ are moving with our students into their own worlds.

Developing leadership in our staff One of Killarney Heights High School’s strategic directions is to develop inspiring teachers and leaders who use and reflect on evidence based teaching to foster motivated and successful students. Last week, the school executive team joined for a whole day workshop on Instructional Leadership with education consultant Brian Miller. He has been the Principal Project Officer for the Leadership and High Performance Directorate for the Department of Education and author of multiple resources for schools, amongst many other valued roles in Education. Brian was impressed with proactive approach to valuing our leaders and enhancing their role in our school to improve educational outcomes. The day included discussion of how the Head Teacher role has evolved in our profession, and how we are moving forward as a school in leading change to teaching and learning. What this means, is that our Head Teachers do so much more than administration, speaking to students if they did the wrong thing or chairing meetings for the faculty. As an executive team, we are leading and modelling to our teachers improved strategies in assessment, building curriculum, using feedback to have a better understanding of our students and to provide students with feedback to make greater connections with their own learning. It is exciting to have such a dynamic team of teachers leading in our school.

As you may be aware the latest Netflix series, ’13 Reasons Why’ has just released season 2. This show is graphic and propagates ideas that could put young viewers at risk. The portrayal of characters is problematic and information is inaccurate and unhelpful. The creators of this show did not adequately consult suicide prevention groups, despite the second series displaying warning signs on the advice of mental illness organisations. Parents need to be made aware of the content of this show and the dangerous implications it can have on young people. Unfortunately, the show romanticises suicide by portraying the main character as living on after death through narration, written notes and recorded messages. In this Special Report, Dr Carr-Gregg highlights the areas of the show that concern the mental health community. He hopes that parents will have a conversation with their teenagers about the content, should they choose to watch it. The SchoolTV series topics aim to further educate parents and families about current issues confronting teenagers, allowing for a conversation to be started. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.

Year 7 Excursion to Flat Rock and Forestville

On Tuesday 29th May, Year 7 spent a

lovely day investigating different

aspects of Killarney and Forestville,

trying to find out what makes this

area one of the most liveable in

Sydney. Students walked to Flat Rock

Beach and by practising their

Geography skills, discovered that the

natural beauty of Garigal National

Park, provided local residents with a

place for recreation and enjoyment.

This is in contrast to the Forestville

shops, where students interviewed a

local resident, counted cars and

conducted a shop audit to measure

the resident’s access to amenities

and facilities.

Overall we are very proud of the Year 7 students who made this day an exceptionally good one with

their excellent behaviour and community minded spirit.

Band Program-Big Band Blast Weekend at Port Macquarie 1st-3rd June 2018

What a blast at the Big Band Blast. A chance to rub shoulders and learn from the best jazz clinicians in the land. Great opportunities to perform in a music festival environment and hang out with your band mates for the weekend. What could be better? The Killarney Heights High Band Program had its annual pilgrimage to Port Macquarie for the Big Band Blast. Students from the Big Band and the Stage Band were able to immerse themselves in jazz music and be inspired. The weekend included fantastic performances by our bands at the festival venues led by conductors Nic Jeffries and Lachlan Hamilton. Some of the highlights included great solos by Wilton Lander and Irisa Yates. Our two vocalists Hannah Greenland and Tcharli Taylor were also in fine voice. The students also got to attend workshops with the likes of Trombone legend Ed Wilson and Cat Empire trumpeter Ross Irwin. They also got to see these masterful musicians in a brilliant concert on the Saturday night. Then each day it was back to the seriously cool backpackers to relax hit the games room and enjoy a bbq. Thanks must go to the conductors and especially to our fantastic teachers, Dennielle Woskanian and David Bryant for giving up their time to make it all happen. Also well done to the parents who made the journey up (and braved the chill). Thanks to the students as well. They were superb representatives of the school. Can’t wait for next year’s Blast in Port!

TAS students have been busy designing, creating and manufacturing as they work through their different context areas this term.

Year 7 is into the second area of study in their Technology Mandatory course, having completed an ‘Egg Drop’ Design Process and Engineered Systems project in Term 1. They will now work through a rotation of Food Technology, Metal Jewellery and Textiles projects for the rest of the year. They are currently completing a common assessment task on an Innovation Case Study, due in Week 8, to be submitted via Moodle.

Year 8 is also working through the rotation of Food Technology, Wood/Electronics, C02 Dragsters and Textiles projects. They have a common assessment task due in Week 10, where they will submit their product and portfolio from either Term 1 or Term 2.

8TEC1 class are currently trialling the new Agriculture and Food Technology unit called ‘Grow and Thrive’, which the TAS faculty is preparing for implementation in 2019, to reflect the requirements of the new Technology Mandatory syllabus.

Stage 5 elective classes have been engaging in exciting projects and completing a high standard of work. This has included recent Food Technology practical examinations where a range of dishes have been safely and hygienically made and presented to industry standard.

Stage 6 students, particularly Year 12 Design and Technology, Software Design and Development and Industrial Technology Multimedia have been working hard on their Major Projects, with August due dates for submission to NESA fast approaching. Best wishes to these students in managing the

development of their practical and portfolio work to completion.

Working safely Personal safety, risk management and safe work procedures are at the centre of all teaching in Technological and Applied Studies (TAS) subjects. It is the first thing considered when planning a lesson. The NSW Department of Education has mandated controls for many work practices in TAS subjects. This includes advice on equipment used in technologies including textiles, timber, metal, food, plastics, electronics and agriculture. The NSW Department of Education clearly outlines footwear requirements in schools:

‘Substantial footwear appropriate to a practical activity should be worn. Footwear such as thongs, open weave type shoes, soft slip on shoes, shoes with openings at toes or heels, mesh joggers, fabric shoes, shoes without a heel, platforms or high heel shoes should not be worn’.

This is NSW DET policy, under Workplace Health and Safety legislation.

Killarney Heights High School Uniform Policy requires all students to wear solid, black, fully enclosed, safe, shoes. Parents need to be aware that there is an important Workplace Health & Safety aspect regarding the shoes your child wears at school. The school is not prepared to breach DET policy.

This applies to ALL students in Years 7 to 12, studying Technology (Mandatory, Industrial-Timber/Engineering/Graphics, Textiles & Food), Hospitality, Construction, Engineering Studies and Design and Technology. If a student is required to enter workshops, kitchens, Textiles rooms, Science labs or the school garden they MUST have a SUBSTANTIAL PROTECTIVE shoe that COVERS the top of his/her foot.

Please be aware that a student will not be allowed to participate in practical or sporting activities if the supervising teacher deems his/her footwear to be unsafe. In this situation, the student will be expected to carry out appropriate alternative work provided by their teacher.

If a student repeatedly fails to complete mandatory practical activities, due to unsafe footwear (or any other reason), it can mean he/she does not meet all required outcomes in the relevant courses. This can have serious ramifications for ROSA and HSC students (note that Technology is mandatory in Years 7 & 8).

Please refer to the school website for the Killarney Heights High School general uniform policy and support the school by ensuring that your child is wearing the correct footwear to school.

Industrial Technology Multimedia Excursion to ABC Studios

Term 2 is the time when Year 11 have the opportunity to experience

the multimedia industry firsthand.

We travelled by train and bus to Ultimo into the ABC studios. First

stop was discovering how the 7:30 report was created. A tour of the

studio and a behind the scenes explanation of how the control room

ran was included.

Next on the agenda was exploring the ins and outs of 702 and Triple J radio.

The tour was followed by watching the 24 hour news and learning about the technology behind

lighting, automated camera movements, green screens and weather maps. We then visited Hair &

Make Up and chilled in the Green Room before concluding in Studio 22. It was ready for the filming

of Q&A. The amount of lighting was amazing!!

We finished the day with a walk around UTS – looking up and appreciating the architecture. A great

day out.

Primary Links Science Program

As part of an exciting collaboration between Forestville Public School and Killarney Heights High

School, Year 5 students will be visiting our high school science laboratories to experience learning

activities and practical investigations using specialised equipment. These visits will occur twice this

term and again in terms 3 and 4. During these visits, a group of Year 9 students who show particular

aptitude and enthusiasm in Science will mentor the primary school students.

During the first visit, our Year 9 students helped the Year 5 students to conduct investigations

observing the stomata on the leaves of eucalyptus trees under microscopes. Each group created

their own slide, viewed the stomata under different magnifications and then drew a scientific

diagram of what they saw. The Year 5 students thoroughly enjoyed using the microscopes and our

Year 9 students did a wonderful job guiding them through the method and demonstrating how to

focus the microscope.

What a magnificent week it has been for Killarney Heights High School sport! We have seen some

outstanding displays of athletics, AFL and knockout sports.

AFL

Students from Killarney Heights High School have been selected to play in an upcoming representative

carnival for the North district for AFL. The students are Cameron Laytham, Zac Lisle, Emily Roach, Erin

Quarford and Tea Lisle. This is an outstanding achievement and we wish them all the best for the

upcoming carnival.

Zone Athletics Carnival

First of all, I would like to congratulate and thank all of the students who participated in the carnival

yesterday. The spirit, sportsmanship and determination to achieve outstanding results was amazing.

A special mention must go to the 17’s+ boys’ who demolished every throwing event and most of the

running events for the day. They were great role models to the junior students on the day, absolutely

dominating the competition. The catch cry for the day was ‘doing it for the points’ which was evident

as the boy’s collected almost every first place on the day. They were; Ben Kabealo, Alex Willet, Ethan

Rogers and Gerard Lang.

Not to be outdone, the girl’s 17’s+ relay team consisted of Tea Lisle, Brooke Challoner, Maya Challoner

and Nina Von Huben.

The girls broke through and won their relay on the final event of the day. The girls should be very

proud of their efforts and will now progress to the regional carnival to defend their title!

Maya Challoner showed exceptional determination and class to obliterate her competitors in the 100

metre final! An integral part to the athletics team, Maya showed what she was capable of and beat

her opponents from Mackellar and Willoughby Girls! Well done Maya!

Kyle Fisher had all eyes on him during the carnival with a final jump in the high jump. He had already

beaten the opposition and was jumping against himself to smash a record that stood from 1976!

Kyle showed the winning mentality required and jumped a new zone record at 1.77 metres. Kyle also

broke the record for 15’s boy’s triple jump and long jump. Certainly a star on the rise and one to look

out for at the next Athletics carnival. Congratulations Kyle!

Toby Dreyer showed his exceptional range of talents as a sportsman, by winning the discus by 10

metres more than second place had thrown! He also went on to win the 200 metre dash and place in

his shot put event. With such a busy schedule it was great to see Toby in full flight live at the track.

Sport

21 | P a g e

The Zietsman brothers showed who was boss at the carnival, dominating the throwing events in the

17’s boy’s discus and javelin and the 15’s boy’s discus and javelin respectively. A fantastic effort as we

look forward to what the future holds for next year!

The true test of grit and unwavering strength came from Cameron Laytham. His races in the 1500m

and 800m were a sight to behold. Starting with a flash of speed early, his customary racing style, led

the field early on and continued to race with his exceptionally fast travelling speed around the course.

Due to the early blitzkrieg, he broke his opposition’s hearts and went on to finish 1st in both of his

races.

Finally, a special mention to Alex Willett who competed in almost every event in his age group. His

ability to bring out the best in the athletes around him and lead the school to significant wins in high

jump, long jump, javelin, shot put, hurdles and second in the 17’s relay and discus. He has definitely

left a mark on the athletics sports program here at Killarney Heights High School.

Congratulations to all the competitors yesterday. If students have progressed through to the regional

carnival they must pick up a note from the PDHPE staff room for further instruction.

Thank you to Sabina Walters who came along to our P&C meeting on Monday 21st May and gave a

very thorough presentation on the Parent & Student Portal, School Website and Moodle - all great

tools that KHHS staff, students and parents can use. This is a great presentation for new parents to

the school as high school can quite often be unknown and a steep learning curve for both students

and parents.

The Parent Portal gives you access to the daily notices, your child's timetable (which they all lose at

some point!), school calendar, your child/rens attendance, activities and school reports. If you have

not discovered the parent portal, don't hesitate, contact the school for your logon key and get going.

The P&C aim to run this and other information sessions throughout the year for parents. If there is

something you would like to learn more about or have a suggestion for a topic that you think other

parents would benefit from please don't hesitate to contact the P&C via emai:

[email protected]

Allocation of P&C funds for the 2018 school year was also voted upon at the last meeting. It is the aim

of the P&C to fund additional resources and amenities across a variety of quality learning curriculum

and faculties. This is done in consultation with the school principal, executive team, teachers, students

and the parent body. In 2018 the P&C has voted to contribute funds towards these projects:

Ongoing upgrade of the Science Labs

Outside table tennis table

Opera Express

Outside seating for canteen area

New furniture for the library

Planting Party

Thank you to all the parents and students who came along to our Planting Party on Sunday 3rd June.

The aim of the day was to plant out the garden bed on the street side in front of the new office building.

The wonderful Diana - who heads up the grounds committee on the P&C - sourced all the plants and

created the planting plan for the site, utilising plants already in the gardens to help keep costs down.

The garden matches those around it and I think we can all agree from the pictures below showing

before and after what a great difference this will make to the school frontage. By planting this garden

bed out with volunteers from the school community and using plants from other garden beds we

saved the P&C $5000. Not bad for a couple of hours work.
