Leda fernehavenaolcom Lainie lksterninaolcom Jane janesklosetaolcom

The Class of 1966 Looking to Reunite

Jane KraidmanFor Leda Favale it is hard to believe that

50 years have gone by since her graduation from KCC

ldquoWhen I think of those wonderful days it seems like yesterdayrdquo said Leda ldquoLooking back on my years at KCC there are so many memories that come to mind and so many people I think of and would love to seerdquo

This is why Leda is excited about the prospect of a reunion for the class of lsquo66 Be-ing part of the first graduating class is a special milestone both in the studentsrsquo and the col-legersquos story

ldquoWe were the first of many firsts Every-thing we did was the first student council newspaper (what a thrill it was to see a copy of Scepter recently with its original name) dra-ma club chorus and so many other thingsrdquo recalled Leda ldquoOur situation was unique The teachers and students were all in this together and I forged many friendships while I was hererdquo

Ledarsquos accomplishments didnrsquot end there After KCC she attended Brooklyn College where she earned her MS in education and discovered a passionate career

ldquoI spent 34 happy years teaching kinder-garten Hard to know who had more fun mdash the kids or merdquo said Leda jovially

Leda retired 12 years ago and considers herself fortunate to have been traveling with her husband Such as life goes Leda like many others from her graduating class have lost touch over the years But she looks forward to a reunion to reconnect and catch up with her former classmates

ldquoWe shared such a unique experience of being the first graduating class of KCCrdquo said Leda ldquoKingsborough gave me a sense of myself and my individuality It allowed me to pursue interests I didnrsquot even know I had It was a great academic experience and it was just so much funrdquo

Jane Kraidman cherishes the education she had received at Kingsborough and the experiences she had mdash it had given her the opportunity to have the career she always wanted and the friendships that have contin-ued over the last 50 years

ldquoIf it werenrsquot for Kingsborough I would not have had the financial ability to at-tend collegerdquo said Jane ldquoItrsquos always a special feeling to know that I was part of the first graduating class We had a wonderful social life to add to the education we received here Everyone was motivated to come to school and be a part of thisrdquo

Perhaps this is why Jane chose to con-tinue her education at Brooklyn College and earn her Masterrsquos degree while teach-ing early childhood education at PS100 in Brooklyn

Jane was a classroom teacher and a read-ing coach at the school until 1985 In her career she became a trainer for early child-hood teachers and then eventually its coor-dinator in District 21 She even worked for three years with the Central Board of Educa-tion as well as being an instrumental part in getting the Family College Program started at KCC

ldquoAs a former student at Kingsborough it was gratifying to be a part of a program that allowed parents to attend the college while their children were in a classroom settingrdquo said Jane recalling what was an enticing aspect about working here

Throughout her journey in academia she also enjoyed an exciting life with her partner of 30 years Michael Miller Looking back she credits much of her lifersquos success to Kingsborough

ldquoI was so proud to attend KCCrdquo said Jane ldquoMy life could have turned out quite different if the school didnrsquot open that yearrdquo

What did Lainie Sternin love about KCC ldquoEverythingrdquo she recalls She was part of more than 200 students who have the bragging rights to be in the first class of KCC

ldquoBeing the lsquofirstrsquo in anything is exciting and anxiety provoking at the same timerdquo said Lainie ldquoBut we got to know each other fairly well which made it much more intimate than a typical college experiencerdquo

As a result she was able make friends with people from diverse backgrounds al-lowing her to become ldquoa more compassionate and accepting individualrdquo mdash an experience she wishes for all KCC students

KCC is where she first overcame her nat-ural instinct to ldquohang back and sit quietly in the cornerrdquo Given that everything was brand new she felt that they were all in the same situation helping her to adapt Lainie quickly joined clubs and organizations and became a very active student

She was involved in the creation and ini-tial layout of the yearbook was stage manager of the drama club and helped organize and create a house plan association

Lainie later attended Brooklyn College and received her bachelors in early child-hood education She taught for four years married and raised a family When her children were grown she attained addi-tional degrees including her Masters While attending college Lainie became the Com-puter Coordinator at a middle school in Great Neck where she taught for 22 years before retiring in 2008

Of all her memories at KCC her fondest one was meeting her husband They met in 1964 and married in December of 1968

ldquoI made some wonderful friends at KCC several of whom are still part of my life If it werenrsquot for Kingsborough I wouldnrsquot have met my husband but more importantly I wouldnrsquot have found my voicerdquo said Lainie

ALUMNI RECEPTION SERIES - MAY 16 2015Alumni met with Tony Nominee Jarrod Spector after his performance in A Little Help From My Friends at the Leon M Goldstein Performing Arts Center

President Herzek Honors the Inaugural Members of the 1963 SocietyLast September the Kings-

borough Community College Foundation launched ldquoThe 1963 Societyrdquo to recognize the sustained annual support of Kings-boroughrsquos most distinguished do-nors This past April KCC invited the founding members of the soci-ety to a special inaugural breakfast reception hosted by President Farley Herzek

This event provided a wonder-ful opportunity for donors to con-nect with one another and share inspiring stories about the impact Kingsborough made on their lives Among the members attending the event was Francis Koch rsquo77 who has supported KCC through decades of service and has helped build the My Turn Program KCCrsquos

tuition-free educational program for individuals 60 years or older

ldquoWhen my husband died I was devastated Kingsborough saved my liferdquo said Koch ldquoIt gave me purpose My work with the My Turn Pro-gram and being in the classrooms with all the young students felt good mdash it kept me youngrdquo

It is the prolific support and

philanthropy of our donors that make a profound difference not only for the students but for Kings-borough as a whole

ldquoI believe in educationrdquo con-tinued Koch ldquoAnd I want to sup-port what I believe in My time and service to Kingsborough gave me a meaning for my life Kingsborough has been good to me and I believe

in paying back and this is my wayrdquo We invite you to join the ldquoThe

1963 Societyrdquo by making a leader-ship-level commitment today For more information or to make a donation today please visit wwwkbcccunyeduThe1963Society or contact Dr Elizabeth Basile in the Office for College Advancement at 718-368-4539

The 1963 Society

Four decades after its creation and placement on KCCrsquos campus the mystery of a perplexing sculp-ture has been solved With the help of the alumnus artistrsquos friends its maker was finally revealed ldquoThe Ten Commandmentsrdquo sculpted by Marty Resnick rsquo72 received rec-ognition on October 30 2014 with the installment of a commemorative plaque

The corroding sculpture made of scrap metal stands about eight feet tall and is anchored into the ground near the T1 building It has survived both the widespread construction of the college around it and Hurricane Sandy Yet until recently no one at the college knew or remembered its origin

ldquoWhen Marty planted that in 1973 he wanted to show only two of the Ten Commandments above ground He wanted the illusion of this thing sinking into the groundrdquo said Howard Fields one of Resnickrsquos friends since high school

Resnick attended KCC in the late 1960rsquos and early 70rsquos He met Ken Gordon rsquo71 there who along with Fields was a driving force behind this memorial The three became very close during that time and would remain lifelong friends

According to Gordon Resnickrsquos sculpture was influenced in part by the final image of the original 1968 movie ldquoPlanet of the Apesrdquo which showed the Statue of Liberty buried up to its waist on a beach The play-fulness in its construction reflected Resnickrsquos humor and personality

When Resnick passed away in August of 2013 Gordon and Fields assiduously worked to honor Resn-ickrsquos memory They reached out to the college and discovered that KCC knew little about the sculpture and Martyrsquos connection to it

After months of collaboration with KCC administrators a plaque was installed Afterwards Gordon and Fields held a memorial with a group of Resnickrsquos old friends by the

sculpture near which they had once hung out and played music together Gordon and Fields played the hobo-song ldquoBig Rock Candy Mountainrdquo on their guitars which was one of Resnickrsquos favorites

According to Gordon Resnick knowing that the sculpturersquos original inscription and message on the back had practically worn away mdash he wondered if its continued existence might be compromised if it was misconstrued and seen solely as a religious artifact and not as the

more secular think-piece that it was The ecologically conscious piece constructed from materials found on the campusrsquo former Maritime Sta-tion makes this sculpture literally made of KCC itself

Today the sculpture has sunk over a foot deeper into the ground becoming more and more like Resnickrsquos ldquoPlanet of the Apesrdquo vision ldquoMarty used art to be thought-pro-voking and like him this sculpture is part-enigma part-puzzle and pure-Martyrdquo Gordon fondly added

ldquoThe 1963 Societyrdquo recognizes donors who make an annual leadership-level gift Membership in the giving society allows you to play an important role in the financial well-being of Kingsborough while also making a powerful statement about your commitment to the collegersquos mission of providing an affordable high-quality and transformational educa-tion to its students Society members enjoy a wide array of benefits including invitations to members-only events and special college communications

Remembering Abe Ginsberg A Longtime Devotee of KCCA beloved Student Publica-

tions contributor passed away this past April Abe Ginsberg 96 gave over 25 years of his life to Kingsborough He worked with countless students all over campus and was an expert pho-tographer who covered hundreds of events

Abe and his wife Miriam 88 both enjoyed successful careers in their respective professions After serving during World War II on B-17 flying fortresses in the Army Air Corps Abe found a passion for photography and went on to become a professional photographer Miriam graduated from Brooklyn College and later NYU and would go on to become a successful social worker

After their fruitful careers they both found a new home at Kingsborough

ldquoWe chose to spend our re-tirement with the My Turn pro-gram at Kingsborough to keep our minds active and continue to take courses that had meaning to usrdquo explained Miriam

During their time at the

college Abe taught students about photography The dark room at Student Publications be-came his place of operations as he continued to channel his passion for photography while also pass-ing it on to his students He pho-tographed almost everything at the college and became the chief photographer of Scepter the KCC campus newspaper of record Ac-cording to Miriam because of his skills professionalism and kind-ness former KCC president Dr Regina Peruggi often called on Abe to take her photograph

ldquoThere are people you meet that want to rush past you but that wasnrsquot their style mdash they were genuinely nice peoplerdquo said Paul Winnick director of event tech-nical services who worked with Abe on hundreds of events

Abe and Miriam were both political activists and first met at such an event in upstate New York They married on January 28 1951 Their marriage of over 64 years is a testament to the kind of people they were

ldquoHe was a special personrdquo

said Miriam ldquoNo couple sees eye to eye on everything but we were always able to talk about things He was very kind soft-spoken and a good listener We accepted each other for who we were and only positively influenced each other He had the same mentality for everyone else mdash he truly liked peoplerdquo

ldquoWhen I think of those wonderful days it seems like yesterdayrdquo said Leda ldquoLooking back on my years at KCC there are so many memories that come to mind and so many people I think of and would love to seerdquo

Today the sculpture has sunk over a foot deeper into the ground becoming more and more like Resnickrsquos ldquoPlanet of the Apesrdquo vision ldquoMarty used art to be thought-pro-voking and like him this sculpture is part-enigma part-puzzle and pure-Martyrdquo Gordon fondly added

college Abe taught students about photography The dark room at Student Publications be-came his place of operations as he continued to channel his passion for photography while also pass-ing it on to his students He pho-tographed almost everything at the college and became the chief photographer of Scepter the KCC campus newspaper of record Ac-cording to Miriam because of his skills professionalism and kind-ness former KCC president Dr Regina Peruggi often called on Abe to take her photograph

ldquoThere are people you meet that want to rush past you but that wasnrsquot their style mdash they were genuinely nice peoplerdquo said Paul Winnick director of event tech-nical services who worked with Abe on hundreds of events

Abe and Miriam were both political activists and first met at such an event in upstate New York They married on January 28 1951 Their marriage of over 64 years is a testament to the kind of people they were

ldquoHe was a special personrdquo

said Miriam ldquoNo couple sees eye to eye on everything but we were always able to talk about things He was very kind soft-spoken and a good listener We accepted each other for who we were and only positively influenced each other He had the same mentality for everyone else mdash he truly liked peoplerdquo

ldquoWhen my husband died I was devastated Kingsborough saved my liferdquo said Koch ldquoIt gave me purpose My work with the My Turn Pro-gram and being in the classrooms with all the young students felt good mdash it kept me youngrdquo
