Rediscovering Islam When was Islam discovered?

The common theory is that Islam was discovered by a man called Muhammad ibn Abdillah who is considered to be the last prophet, in 610 CE.

He is an Arab by race from the respected Hashimite clan of the powerful Quraysh tribe.

Page 6: Knowing Islam Session - 2013

Rediscovering Islam Contrary to the common belief:

Muslims believe that Islam was revealed to other Prophets and Messengers who came before Muhammad;

Say, [O believers], "We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to

Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses and Jesus

and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are

Muslims [in submission] to Him.“

Quran, 2:136

What is it’s message?

Islam and Muslims What makes a Muslim?

A person who accepted the commandments of God;

A person who puts God commands into practice.

Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are

for Allah , Lord of the worlds. No partner has He. And this I have

been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims.“

Quran, 6: 162 - 163

Knowing the Divine Is there a Supreme and Divine being? How do we know whether God exist or not? How do we relate to God? What are the features of God?

“Behold! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and day - there are

indeed Signs for men of understanding”

Quran 3:190

God revealed Himself and part of His characteristics to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), in chapter 112, verses 1 – 4:

Knowing the Divine

1. “Say: He is Allah, the One and Only;

2. Allah: the Eternal, the Absolute;

3. He neither begets nor is born;

4. And there is none like unto Him.”

If God (from now on we shall use the name He introduced Himself to Prophet Muhammad i.e. Allah) is beyond our imagination, howdo Muslims know Him?

“And Allah has the most (beautiful) excellent Names (attributes), so call on Him by them” …

Quran, 7:180

“Allah - there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names.”

Quran, 20:8

Perfection

The essence of Islam covers three main spheres:1. Faith: which establishes the belief system;2. Deeds: which form the basic acts that a Muslim would have to

observe in his lifetime;3. Perfection: to ensure constant consciousness of Allah’s presence.

Knowing Islam Session, with Muhammad Taufiq bin Abdul Majeed

Page 17: Knowing Islam Session - 2013

There are 6 articles of faith for Muslims:1. Belief in the Oneness of God;2. Belief in the Angels;3. Belief in the Sacred Books revealed to

prophets and messengers;4. Belief in Prophets and Messengers;5. Belief in the Last Day;6. Belief in the Will of God.

“Alif, Lam, Meem. This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah - Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer,

and spend out of what We have provided for them, And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was

revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith]. Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the

successful.”

Quran, 2 :1 - 5

Islam: Then and Today Can Islam be applied today?

Or is it a religion that suits the simple life of Bedouin Arabs in the 7th and 8th century?

Do we need the system that Islam introduced to mankind?

Or have the modern and scientific discoveries took over the relevance of religion?

Changing Name It is not compulsory for you to change your name if it has a

positive and good meaning to it;

However, due to the context that we’re living in, we would recommend you to have a Muslim/Arabic name paired with your name;

E.g. Brad Pitt / Angelina Jolie would become: Muhammad Brad Pitt / Nur Angelina Jolie Badrul Pitt / Anisah Jolie Etc.

For Singaporeans, the format of the name that you have chosen can be inserted in your IC. However, do note that your current name remains while the Muslim name is in an alias.
