Knox ran their annual Obedience and Rally‐O trial on the Friday before Grand Final.  A record number of entries were received, especially in the higher levels of obedience (Open, Utility and Utility Excellent).  We had a huge number of club members entered, all with varying degrees of success and not‐quite success.  A few spits of rain didn’t dampen competitors spirits

 Geoff & ‘Spencer’ in Utility.

The Utility class is a very high level of obedience.  Tim & ‘Zuri’ have selected to do the Food Refusal exercise. Gordon, the Judge, approaches ‘Zuri’ with some tasty food.  Tim must remain facing away from the dog.  He has no idea if ‘Zuri’ will succumb to the delicacies on offer!    Photos by club members Kristy, Norm and Julz

An event like this cannot run without the help of many people. I would like to especially thank the following people:- Norm, for all his assistance preparing for the trial, organising the equipment beforehand, marking out the grounds the night before and all the work he did on the day. Marg, for organising everything in the Kitchen. Yummy hot food for lunch and amazing desserts. Trevor, for all the help with the club database and preparing the pass cards. Pat, for organising the ribbons and trophies, especially the Rally Champion ribbon that got such a big “oooooh” at presentations. Maybe no more glass trophies tho!!!! And then there are the helpers, who just turn up and no matter what job you give them, off they go and do it and the volunteers who stewarded in the cold and rain. I would like to thank the club for the opportunity to be Trial Secretary. It certainly gives a different perspective to Competitions!

AGILITY NEWS    by Norm Morcom

Knox Obedience Dog Club Page 6

Victoria has two agility trials each year which are regarded as more prestigious than others. They are the Dogs Victoria State Trial and the Royal Melbourne Show.

They both happen in September and we have a report from each in this month’s Agility News. We unfortunately have limited space, so only special highlights can be reported.

TOP DOG STYLE AT STATE TRIAL It was cool and drizzly at the State Agility Trial on September 1st. But that didn’t dampen spirits. A highlight each year is the Top Dog competition when Victoria’s 15 best performing dogs over the previous 12 months are chosen to compete against each other. Everything else stops while everyone gathers to watch the action. The skills demonstrated are magical. Alois Schnider and his border collie Chloe participated and put in a fabulous jumping run to finish in 3rd Place, a full 2 sec clear of 4th and only 0.06 sec behind 2nd. In the regular trial events for mere mortals, Knox ODC had 18 members competing. We think that makes our club the most active in agility if we exclude the four specialist agility-only clubs.

BLOWN ON, BUT NOT BLOWN AWAY, AT ALTONA Trials at Altona have a habit of delivering challenging weather. September’s event was no exception. The strong winds and rain meant most competitors worked out of their cars rather than gazebos or tents. Most dogs seemed to be less affected by the squally conditions than their handlers were. It takes more than rain to dampen canine enthusiasm for an agility run.

ROYAL MELBOURNE SHOW Agility at “The Show” (aka “The Royal”) has a very different atmosphere to any other trial. You compete in front of a large spectator audience watching from tiered seating and there’s a commentator on a PA system. The ring is also adjacent the mechanical “rides” area, with all its noise. So your dog has to be very focused. Our club members achieved some stunning results. Denise Basile and her sheltie Bella took out first place in both excellent agility and excellent jumping. Meryl Birchall and her young toy poodle Indi took out first place in both novice agility and novice jumping. And then they all contributed to a Knox trifecta in the novice gamblers event when Meryl and Indi came first, Heather Donaldson with Delta came second, and Denise with Bella came third.

LITTLE DOGS FLY AT MOORABBIN (but their international takeoff wasn’t at the airport)

At the Moorabbin agility trial our agiliteers had the opportunity to run courses under UK-based international judge Lee Gibson, who is renowned as an international competitor, instructor and judge. While in Australia he gave seminars for our judges. Lee’s course layouts at Moorabbin had a subtly different “feel” to what we’re used to. While technically challenging, they were free flowing and rewarded dog-handler teams who had advanced skills.

Our club members continued their recent habit of achieving great trialling success. It was particularly our small and medium sized dogs who starred. Highlights were: • Denise Basile with Bella: three 1st Places • Meryl Birchall with Indi: three 1st Places and a 2nd. • Meryl Birchall with Raulf: two 1st Places plus a 2nd and a 3rd. • Margaret Keil with Lucille: two 1st Places • Nola Williams with Saphie: a 1st and 2nd • Norm Morcom with Pearl: two 1st Places

DOGS LEARN BETTER WITH REWARDS Most dog training these days is on the positive side. Reward based training systems using food and praise work very well without traumatizing or asserting dominance over the dog. In the last decade the emphasis on force and “breaking” a dog has shifted and we are encouraged to use praise and treats. Part of the reason for this change is a better understanding of how we want our dogs to learn, so that we end up with a stable unaggressive dog that is safe around family.

Reward based training is enjoyable for the dog and handler. Rewards may be food, toy or verbal praise like “Good Dog” when the dog performs the wanted behaviour. If the dog is not rewarded for unwanted behaviour, then they stop doing it. If we use food as a lure, we need to progress one step at a time.

1. Hold the food so the dog can see it 2. Hold the food so the dog cannot see it 3. Keep food in a treat bag or pocket and

use as a quick reward.

The dog learns that the food is not always visible, but is always available. Do not get stuck in one way using the food, move on quickly. The next step is not to carry the food on you, but have it placed around your training area. Do not let the dog see where you placed the container with food. Often dogs will only do anything when they see food, but otherwise pack it in. This happens when the handler uses food to get the dog to work, then take the food away and ask dog to work again without reward. The dog learns that he will only get the food if he can see it with his own eyes. You should never “disengage” from your dog when you are training. Your concentration should be wholly on your dog and includes rewarding. If you need to talk or pay attention to something, then finish your dog by giving him a release word, so he knows training is over. Training that relies on reward-based method when properly followed will develop the dog’s manners and enhance the relationship between dog and handler. Seems like a better deal to us!

Any dog showing visible signs of any disease or injury will be asked to leave the training ground and to seek veterinary advice. A dog that has bitten, or in the opinion of the training panel shows an extreme tendency of unprovoked aggression towards people, must be muzzled. Members have the right of appeal against muzzling if it can be proved, beyond doubt, that the dog was provoked. Removal of a muzzle will be decided by the committee, at the recommendation of the Training Panel.

YELLOW BANDANAS The Knox Obedience Dog Club has available Yellow Bandanas to identify dogs that may need a bit of space around them.

The reason for needing one could be:

• Nervousness

• Recovery from an operation (i.e.: convalescing)

• Unsociable to people or other dogs

When approaching a yellow bandana dog please make sure your dog doesn’t go running up to it freely, just as the handler of the yellow bandana dog should be mindful of the space around their dog at all times.

If you feel that your dog needs a Yellow Bandana, ask your instructor to accompany you to the Office, where an assessment of your dog will be made by your Instructor and the Supervisor of Training. Ongoing Assessments will be made while your dog requires the Yellow Bandana.
