One of the perennial mission of the PG Department of English (Un-Aided) is to take the lamp
of education with the helping hands to the underprivileged communities. With such thought
in mind a humble initiative was planned by the Department and it was spearheaded by
Assistant Professors Mr. J. Athisayaraj Jebakumar and Mr. C. Sakthivel which was strongly
endorsed by the Head of the Institution.
This extension activity was aimed to make the learned teachers educate the needy.
The duration of this humane act included a week’s stay (from 10.06.2018 to 16.06.2018) at
Dieter Hueske Orphanage for Boys and Bergedorfer Orphanage for Girls to teach the
inmates and also simultaneous plans were made to teach the students of Kuppannur,
Vellarukanpalayam and Pullakaundanpudhur Govt. Schools as well. Proper authorization was
sought from the AEEO Tmt. Shrikala and from the Heads of the selected Orphanages and
Schools. The volunteering students were asked to get permission from their parents as well.
After getting the approval from the Head of the Department and the Institution and
clearance from the required Government bodies, the project was green lit. Students both boys
and girls numbering 10 were accompanied by Assistant Professors Mr. J. Athisayaraj
Jebakumar and Mr. C. Sakthivel.
Our students reached the Orphanage with the staff on 10.06.2018. Commencement of
teaching the students English and Life Skills began on 11.06.2018. The inmates at the
orphanages and the students in schools took part in this project with brimming enthusiasm
and joy. Our volunteering students found this activity the right platform with dual opportunity
to serve the society and sharpen their skills. Our students did not limit themselves to teaching
alone and extended their hands literally to help the orphanage children to sow seeds like
pumpkin, brinjal and fertilize the farmland and planted about 200 tomato saplings. They also
collected about 1000 coconut leaf-stalks from the farm house and arranged them in the boys’
orphanage. This help by our students under the supervision of our staff was highly
appreciated by the villagers. The students taught basic grammar to the students of
Government aided middle school, Kuppanur, Vellarukanpalayam and Pullakaundanpudhur.
Dr. Diwakar Thomas of the PG Department of English (UA) visited the two
orphanages and also the three Government schools. He taught the children how to introduce
oneself and Mr. Athisayaraj Jebakumar using a puppet taught the students the English
and Tamil Alphabets.
Dr. Diwakar Thomas, Mr. J. Athisayaraj Jebakumar , Mr. C. Sakthivel and all the 10
Students donated liberally and gave Non-vegetarian Lunch and Dinner. All the activities
came to a happy ending on 16.06.2018. An enormous ovation was given to our professors
and students by everyone at the Orphanages and the Schools with their management deeply
expressing their gratitude to the Management of our College and to our PG Department of
English(Un-Aided) for this laudable act of benevolence.
Our students departed from the premises and reached their respective homes on
16.06.2018. No doubt the students and the staff were benefitted by their visit and gained rich
experience. We thank our Principal Dr.V.Balasubramaniam , our CEO Dr.V.Chinnusamy and
