Koondrook Primary School
Principal’s Report Wizard of Oz Tomorrow, Wednesday 20th June, we will be up bright and early ready to catch the bus as we head to Melbourne to see the stage show The Wizard of Oz. All students need to be at school by 6:45am. The bus needs to be left Koondrook by 7:00am. The Prep and Year 5/6 students will travel in one bus and the Year 1/2/3/4 students will be on the second bus. We will stop at Marong for a toilet stop, morning tea and a quick run around. When we get to Melbourne we will have lunch in the park before heading to the show. On the way home, we will be stopping at Calder Parkway for dinner. Students need to have up to $15 to buy their dinner. This needs to be given to the teachers in a named green envelope. The students will be able to choose from McDonalds, Subway and KFC. All students need to wear their full school uniform. They need to take fruit, morning tea, lunch, snacks and water bottle. If your child is likely to get bus sick please let the teachers know. I would suggest they take a travel sickness tablet and you give the class teacher one for the way home. We predict that we will be home at about 9:00pm but I will send text messages and update our Facebook page to confirm the time. Mates Royal Hotel Raffle Friday, 22nd June, will be our turn for the Mates Royal Hotel Raffle. The Cruse, Verhey and Faul families are rostered on to sell tickets between 5pm and 8pm. Raffle Winner Congratulations to the Sims family who have won the wood raffle. Thank you to everyone who supported the raffle, we raised $470.90.

Reports and Parent Teacher Interviews The teachers have been busy writing reports; they will be sent home next week. Parent teacher interviews will be held next term. Lions Club Speeches The students in Year 3/4/5/6 have been working on their speeches for the Lion’s Club Junior Public Speaking competition. The Year 3/4 topic is “Where is your favourite place to go in our community? How did you find it? Describe it to us. Why do you like it? What makes it special to you? What do you do when you are there?” The Year 5/6 topic is “You are a Travel Guide. Your job is to explore your local area – as if you’ve never seen it before! Document what you find. Tell us all about your discoveries and why we should visit.” The children will be delivering their speeches to members of the Barham/Koondrook Lions Club on Thursday 28th
June. It can be very nerve wracking doing public speaking and we wish them all the best. Winners will then go through to compete against children from other schools at a later date. End of Term Friday June 29th is the last day of Term 2 with Early Dismissal at 1:35pm. School resumes for Term 3 on Monday July 16th.
Curriculum Day On Friday 10th August there will be no school for students. All staff members will be attending professional learning in Swan Hill with teachers and staff from the whole of the Southern Mallee Network in Swan Hill. Head Lice We have had another case of headlice/nits at school. Please check your children’s hair and treat if necessary. Here is a website that has some answers about headlice - http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/principals/spag/health/Documents/ScratchingforAnswers.pdf Leave Kate Donehue will be taking leave from June 27th until July 27th. She is travelling overseas and we wish her safe travels and a great experience. Sophie Lake will be teaching in the Prep room in Kate’s absence while Janice Flood will replace Sophie’s time in the 1/2 room. Amanda Bradford

5/6 Class News We seem to be rushing towards the end of term, two weeks to go! Last week was EXPO week and I congratulate the students on their endeavour in exploring economics and business skills. Students explored a variety of concepts including: -
• why individuals cannot have all the items they want and therefore have to make a choice,
• the way societies use natural, capital and human resources to satisfy the needs and wants of present and future generations
• what are goods and services and
• make decisions, identify appropriate actions by considering the advantages and disadvantages, and form conclusions concerning an economics or business issue or event
• identify the reasons businesses exist and investigate the different ways they produce and distribute goods and services
In our reflective discussions many students have declared Economics and Business to be one of their favourite areas of study so far. I believe we have a few budding entrepreneurs in the class! Thank you to the families who were able to pop in for a look. It is awkward finding a time that suits everyone and we would appreciate any ideas you have. It is very pleasing to see an increase in the number of students consistently reading at home each night and completing their response to reading diary. Well done! My ideal is for all students to be reading for at least 20 minutes each day. Last Friday the 3-6 students watched the original Wizard of Oz movie in preparation for tomorrow’s excursion to the musical production. We will be doing some comparing and contrasting as part of our literacy studies as a follow up. The Lions Club Speeches are fast approaching. Any support from home in helping your child be ready would be greatly appreciated, as some students still have a bit to do. Jennie Callow
