The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Spirit of Renew My Church

Dear Parishioners and Friends, For the past ten years, I have used my PASTOR’S COLUMN to share with you my thoughts about the “happenings” in our parish family, our Village of Lemont, our school, our Religious Education Program, the Archdiocese, the Catholic Church-at-large, and sometimes even the world. I have used my column as a way to keep you informed, to teach, to encourage, to offer hope, share faith, to challenge, and sometimes just to MUSE about the things in my heart and mind. This weekend will be the LAST INSTALLMENT of FATHER KURT’S COLUMN. I hope you didn’t miss a single one these past 10 years since they were each, in their own way, outstanding! Just joking. Beginning July 1 as many of you know by now, I will be starting my new responsibilities as the Vicar For Priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Father Brian will be assuming the pastoral duties of the new combined Church of St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick. I do wish him and you all the best in this new adventure. I want to take this opportunity to THANK YOU for the many ways you helped me bring the GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST to others in our parish family and beyond. Thank you for allowing me to share my reflections with you week to week. I hope you enjoyed reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them. I also want to thank our BULLETIN EDITOR, MRS. SUE RAYMOND. She always found a way to help me communicate my thoughts to you in a clearer manner for which I am grateful. In addition, she also improved the LOOK of our bulletin and made it more USER FRIENDLY over the years. KUDOS TO YOU, SUE. Next weekend, the BULLETIN will have a NEW LOOK combining news from St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick together with the layout being done through the PARISH OFFICE OF ST. ALPHONSUS. I am sure you will like the COMBINED PARISH LOOK equally as well. For information on how to submit an article for the new bulletin, you may contact the St. Alphonsus Campus Office at 630-257-2414. Last weekend, due to the very kind and generous efforts of Mr. JIM FIORE AND HIS FAMILY, the 9a.m. Mass was recorded. You will hear both Jim and I share thoughts about Father’s Day from our perspectives. I also share my official good-bye with all of you as well as my many THANK YOUS for these past ten years. If you would like to view this Mass in the future, you can do so by visiting our website (as of this writing it has yet to be posted). For next weekend’s Mass schedule and where these Masses will take place, you can turn to page 8 of this weekend’s bulletin as well as consult our web page.

www.stpatr ick lemont .org

I want to take this opportunity to PUBLICLY THANK our PARISH STAFF and ALL OF OUR WEEKEND PRIEST ASSISTANTS. You know I would not have been able to accomplish anything as a Pastor without your hard work, generosity, self-sacrifice, and genuine faith in our Lord. Thank you personally for your support and friendship over this last decade of our journey together. May God bless you many times over!!!! Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I assure you of mine. In a special way, please join me in prayer for the planned surgical procedure for Mrs. Sue Raymond, our Parish Secretary (the previous surgical date in March was canceled due to the Covid-19 restrictions). Sue will start her leave of absence beginning July 7th. Sue, may you heal quickly, and come back stronger than ever. All the best!!! Many of you over the last few weeks have asked for my new address. As of yet, I do not have a new parish address. If you wish to reach me, I can be contacted at the following address: Fr. Kurt Boras, Vicars for Priests Office, 980 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 1525, Chicago, Illinois 60611…. Office Phone: 1-312-534-1837. You can leave a message with our Office Manager, MRS. VANESSA VAZQUEZ. Next weekend, we will celebrate the FOURTH OF JULY. It will be very unique in the annals of our history. May we GIVE THANKS for the many blessings we share. May we pray for a cure to come quickly for the effects of the CORONA-VIRUS. May we pray for all those suffering physically, emotionally, spiritually and economically throughout our world. May we pray for an end to all war, violence, and hatred…. and most importantly, for the FREEDOMS WE SHARE, LET US GIVE THANKS, Enjoy the HOLIDAY and time well spent with family and friends…… BE SAFE….. BE WELL….. AND AS WE SAY IN THE SPIRIT OF ST. PATRICK, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN…… MAY GOD HOLD YOU IN THE PALM OF HIS HAND!!!!

With God’s choicest blessings for you and your loved ones always…

Confirmation/First Communion Update

Fortunately, the Dioceses of Illinois are beginning to reopen for Sunday and weekday Masses, each parish at its own pace. Reopening guidelines are also in place for baptisms, weddings, funerals and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. While we are taking steps to carefully consider 2020 First Communion and Confirmation dates, these dates have not yet been decided. Parents are asked to watch their emails from the Religious Education Program and/or the St. Alphonsus-St. Patrick School.

The Pro-Life Action League invites you to join the upcoming “Face the Truth” Tour, an annual pro-life public education initiative that reaches tens of thousands of people with the reality of abortion. From July 10-18, pro-life volunteers will hold signs at major intersections across Chicagoland, depicting the beauty of life in the womb as well as the horrible injustice done to the unborn victims of abortion. The Face the Truth Tour changes hearts and minds, guides post-abortive women and men to healing and peace and saves babies from abortion. For more information on this powerful pro-life campaign, including the complete Tour schedule, Visit: ProLifeAction.org.

Sunday Readings— June 28, 2020 The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading 1 2 Kgs 4:8–11, 14–16a One day Elisha came to Shunem, where there was a woman of influence, who urged him to dine with her. Af-terward, whenever he passed by, he used to stop there to dine. So she said to her husband, “I know that Elisha is a holy man of God. Since he visits us often, let us arrange a little room on the roof and furnish it for him with a bed, table, chair, and lamp, so that when he comes to us he can stay there.” Sometime later Elisha arrived and stayed in the room overnight. Later Elisha asked, “Can something be done for her?” His servant Gehazi answered, “Yes! She has no son, and her husband is getting on in years.” Elisha said, “Call her.” When the woman had been called and stood at the door, Elisha promised, “This time next year you will be fondling a baby son.” Responsorial Psalm Ps 82:2–3, 16–17, 18–19 R. (2a) For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. The promises of the L I will sing forever, through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness. For you have said, “My kindness is established forever;” in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness. R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. Blessed the people who know the joyful shout; in the light of your countenance, O L , they walk. At your name they rejoice all the day, and through your justice they are exalted. R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. You are the splendor of their strength, and by your favor our horn is exalted. For to the L belongs our shield, and the Holy One of Israel, our king. R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. Reading 2 Rom 6:3–4, 8–11 Brothers and sisters: Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him. As to his death, he died to sin once and for all; as to his life, he lives for God. Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.

Sunday Readings—Continued Gospel Mt 10:37–42 Jesus said to his apostles: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple—amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States of America, second typical edition © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Inc., Washington, DC. I would like to extend a great big thank you and recognize Mrs. Polly Trent for her dedication and hard work caring for our Mass linens for the past 5+ years (this is a guess, even Polly is not sure). She scrubbed, washed, ironed and folded countless purificators, towels, corporals and more in that time. Polly needed to step away from this ministry just last week, and expressed her gratitude for the honor of being trusted to do this intricate and sacred work. Just one of the many volunteers who care for our

church and allow us to celebrate Mass. God bless you, Polly. In turn, I would also like to thank Julie Farmer for agreeing to our “ask” to replace Polly. Julie will be caring for our linens and has already jumped in by taking our funeral pall to the dry cleaner and washing an alb from the priests’ alb closet. I hope she is not easily intimidated by all that necessary steam ironing. Secret: Some of us from my generation haven’t ironed in years! Thanks to you both, Polly and Julie. Sue Raymond
