Issue 43 of our magazine travels by sea to the best tournaments around the world.

The voyage begins in the Atlantic, in Wellington on the Florida coast, for the last few days of the United States season, with the Open final and temperatures rising following three months of matches, with much at stake and victory for the English patron who won the British Open in 2011: Lyndon Lea and his team Zacara.

It continues in the European spring on the North Sea, on the beaches of Knokke, with the sun in place to give the go-ahead for the 14th Scapa Beach Polo tournament, with a remarkable continuance and prestige on the annual schedule of competitions.

We tour the town of Knokke with our camera in hand to reveal to you this unusual and renowned seaside resort, appearing on the map of tourist destinations thanks to its polo.

Crossing the English Channel, we arrive in England, where the sun takes a rest and we witness the Queen’s Cup in the rain, until the final day, when Dubai puts its hand up and writes its name in the history books of one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, with the uninterrupted presence of Queen Elizabeth II in a year of continuous celebrations which are no excuse for missing the polo.

The player Guillermo Terrera receives us at his stables to tell us about the past, present and future of his short but intense professional career, and is the protagonist of our front cover.

We also attend the Royal Windsor Cup, with the Al Habtoor family on the field and on the podium.

We the continue to Ibiza where the summer has just got underway, with the solstice on the tournament’s Saturday and awaking after Saint John’s Night to award the prizes to the world-class players taking part.

From the Mediterranean we then head up the Guadiaro River, where the polo is being played on both banks, to inform you of an August schedule crammed with matches, ensuring the continuance in Spain of days that only our beloved sport can provide.

Sun, sand, sea air and endless days to allow for more polo, more chukkas and, if necessary, extra time with a golden goal.

La edición número 43 de nuestra revista, viaja para llegar desde el mar a los mejores torneos salpicados por el mundo.

Comienza el viaje en el Atlántico, en las costas de Florida, en Wellington, durante los últimos días de la temporada de Estados Unidos, con la Final del Abierto y las tempe-raturas en aumento después de tres meses de partidos, con mucho puesto en juego y la victoria del Patrón inglés que fuera ganador de el Abierto Británico en 2011: Lyndon Lea y su equipo Zacara.

Lo continúa en la primavera europea por el Mar del Norte, en las playas de Knokke, con el sol instalado para dar permiso a la edición número 14 del Scapa Polo Beach, destacable por su permanencia y prestigio en el calendario anual de torneos.

Recorremos la ciudad de Knokke cámara en mano, para llevarlos a conocer ese bal-neario insólito y colmado de prestigio que el polo nos permite encontrar en el mapa de los destinos turísticos.

Cruzando el Canal de La Mancha llegamos al Reino Unido, donde el sol se toma una tregua y vivimos bajo la lluvia los partidos de la Copa de la Reina hasta el día del encuentro fi nal, donde Dubai dice presente y graba su nombre en la historia de uno de los más prestigiosos torneos del mundo, con la presencia ininterrumpida de Su Majestad la Reina Isabel II, en un año de festejos continuados, que no son excusa para faltar al Polo.

El jugador Guillermo Terrera nos recibe en la caballeriza para contarnos pasado, presente y futuro de su corta pero intensa carrera como profesional. Y es protagonista de nuestra portada.

También presenciamos la Royal Windsor Cup, con la familia Al Habtoor en las can-chas y en el podio.

Seguimos hasta Ibiza en el recién estrenado verano, que presume de solsticio en el sábado de su torneo y amanece de la noche de San Juan para entregar trofeos con la participación de jugadores de prestigio.

Por el Mediterraneo llegamos hasta el Rio Guadiaro con polo en ambas márgenes, para contarles el programa de un Agosto colmado de partidos, que nos asegura la per-manencia en España de jornadas que solo este, nuestro querido deporte, nos puede regalar.

The roster was now 11 teams with Piaget not start-ing in the Open, IPC Polo Director Jimmy New-

man having a trournament format with two division of 5 and 6 teams. The first division with five teams was named Bracket I for a straight round-robin game between Coca Cola, 2009 Champion Audi, La Ensenada, defend-ing champion Lechuza and Valiente II. The other division was split in two brack-ets of three teams playing each other, cross brackets. Division I had four games, four teams out of the five advancing to the quarterfinals; Division II had three games, four out of the six teams advanc-ing to the quarterfinals.

The tournament started on Thursday March 29 with a double header. In the first game, Audi had an 8-5 lead on Coca-Cola to win 15-11. In the second game, La Ensenada kept defending champion Le-chuza on its toes in the first half (7-5), four goals in the fourth chukker, one by each member of the Lechuza team, sounded the end of a close game, Lechuza up 11-5 then, winning 15-7.

Day II of the Nespresso U.S. Open Polo Championship on Saturday March 31st was the opening games for Division II of the two brackets of three teams. Zac-ara, ERG and Valiente I were winners. After the first week in the US Open, strong teams such as Lechuza, Audi, Valiente II in Division I, and Zacara, ERG and Va-

liente I were showing potential while oth-ers had to recoup for a chance to get to the Quarterfinals.

The second week of competition started with Audi defeating Valiente II 12-11 to take second place behind Lechuza in Bracket I.

Friday April 6 had only one game between Coca Cola and La Ensenada, both needed a win to stay in touch with the leaders. Co-ca-Cola won 15-8.

Now it was the turn for Division II with Bracket I & II to get back to the field with its second round of three games, two matches played on Saturday 7, one on Sunday 8.

After Valiente I and Valiente II split the first two tournaments of the 26 goal season

at International Polo Palm Beach it was time to start the 2012 Nespresso US Open

Valiente I played a superb game of patience and good distribution of the ball to lead ERG 9-3 at halftime, winning 18-8.

The day’s second game was played at 4pm with beautiful temperature on the Easter weekend, Alegria playing a super game to defeat a very determined Las Monjitas 8-6.

The game was close all the way, Alegria with an early goal in the sixth chukker to lead 8-5 and fitting the return of Las Monjitas only able to get one goal back, Alegria the winner 8-6. Tomas del Rio had an especially good game in defense for Alegria in the second half.

Easter Sunday was a big day for the tournament when Facundo Pieres wore the #1 shirt for Zacara, probably the first time in many years in the United States when a 10 goal sported the #1 shirt in a polo game. Zacara and Orchard Hill went neck and neck most of the match, trading the lead several times, though never apart from each other by more than a goal, until the sixth chukker when three goals by Facundo Pieres and one by Magoo LaPrida made the difference (4-1) for Zacara to win 15-12.

Earlier in the day, Coca-Cola and Lechuza traded the lead several times, Coca-Cola with a strong sixth chukker on 3 goals by Julio Arel-lano for the win 9-7 and Valiente II, with Santiago Chavanne replac-ing still out of commission Adolfo Cambiaso, took the lead early on La Ensenada, and carried it out through the end, winning 10-8.

This ended the second week of games and already one team La Encenada was out of the running for Bracket I witha 0-3 record, de facto qualifying the other four teams. Coca-Cola had evened out its record 2-2 with wins over La Encenada and Lechuza, Audi, Lechuza and Valiente II were home free with a 2-1 record.

The third week of qualifying games in the Nespresso U.S. Open Polo Championship started with Audi defeating La Ensenada 11-7 on Wednesday April 11.

Thursday 12 would be a big with four games played, three of them for Division II with all team vying for the 4 spots in the quarterfinals.

In the first two games of the day, Lechuza and Zacara defeated their opponents Valiente II and Valiente I 12-10 and 11-9 respectively, both teams taking first place on either side of the draw with the day’s wins.

In the afternoon games, ERG defeat Alegria 13-10 and Orchard Hill defeat Las Monjitas 7-5; both winners qualifying to the Quarterfinals.

So the last eight were set to play the quartertinals of the US Open on Sunday, April 15, a big polo day at IPC. In the first game at 10 am on field #2, ERG imposed on Audi 12-10.

Scott Wood, who had been suffering from an injury to his right eye, was replaced by Marcos Alberdi.

The second game of the quarterfinals was at noon on field #5, Le-chuza vs. Orchard Hill. Right off the bat, Orchard Hill was playing at 150 miles an hour gathering a lot of support from the large crowd.

This was a tremendous game, arguably the best game of the season for the raw speed, the quality of the ponies and the excellent execu-tion by the players.

Victor Vargas who, at speed and under pressure from Orchard Hill defenders, hit a marvelous, big, high shot to give his team the win 13-11.

The third game was at 2 pm on the Isla Carroll West field, Valiente II facing Va-liente I.

Starting the fourth, Adolfo was replaced by Pablo MacDonough and Valiente I continued on its momentum to outscore Valiente II 4-2 for the lead 9-7, 12-10 in the fifth and 14-11 to end the match, Va-liente II never letting up its pressure until the end, Pelon Stirling and Alejo Tarenco on all the plays, but Valiente I proved once again its depth in horses and deter-mination for the players, Polito Pieres and Miguel Astrada finishing the match on a high note.

The fourth match was on Piaget field at 4 pm, featuring Coca-Cola and Zacara. Wearing the #1 shirt, Facundo Pieres played one of the best games he ever played in Wellington with huge runs and beautiful goals in the first half to score six times for Zacara’s 7-3 lead on Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola came back from the break with renewed determination getting 2

goals back in the fourth, 8-6, but the a superlative Facundo Pieres backed by a well-turned out trio of Lyndon Lea, Ma-goo LaPrida and Mike Azzaro, turned up the heat once again to win 13-7.

Facundo was La Martina MVP and his mare “Elite” was Best Playing Pony.

Now on to the semifials played Wednes-day April 18. Spectators at IPC and inter-net viewers around the World were treat-ed to great semifinal matches for the 2012 Nespresso U.S. OPEN Polo Champion-ship on the day. Lechuza was the winner of the first semifinal defeating Valiente I 9-8 in overtime in one of the very best matches of the season

The second game was just as close in the last three chukkers, Sebastian Merlos tied it at 12-all early sixth, Zacara back ahead 14-12 with back to back goals, Tincho Merlos with one goal back.

Zacara defended very well on repeated plays on goal by ERG, keeping the one-goal lead for the win 14-13.

Sunday April 22nd was the big final on Piaget field at IPC between defending Champion Lechuza and Zacara. It was

Zacara’s time to take the 2012 Nespresso US Open Polo Championship home with a strong win over Lechuza 10-8. Mike Azzaro was MVP and Lelani was Best Playing Pony fpr Facundo Pieres, played in the 2nd and 6th chukker.

The teams were very close through the first half, tied at every digit, Zacara up by one, 5-4, on two goals by Mike Azzaro late third chukker.

Juan Martin Nero tied the game at 5-all early fourth, but Zacara was back on top in that chukker with 3 goals by Facundo Pieres, Magoo LaPrida and Mike Azzaro for 8-5.

Lechuza came back strong in the fifth, catching up with 2 goals from Sapo Caset to get back within one, 8-7.

Zacara was back leading by 2 on a goal by Magoo LaPrida early sixth chukker for 9-7, Lyndon Lea scoring a monster goal next for 10-7, Zacara. Sapo Caset got the goal back at 2:36 with a 40 yard penalty #3 conversion for 10-8, Lechuza with a strong push late chukker, Mike Azzaro and Facundo Pieres saving the day close to goal, Zacara now out of danger as time was running out on Lechuza. m

La lista contaba con 11 equipos y Jimmy Newman, el director de IPC Polo, se decidió por un formato de torneo con dos di-

visiones de 5 y 6 equipos. La primera división con cinco equipos se denominó grupo I y enfrentó en un torneo directo a Coca Cola, Audi (campeón de 2009), La Ensenada, el campeón previo Lechuza y Valiente II. La otra división se dividió en dos grupos de tres equipos que se enfren-taban entre sí con partidos cruzados. La división I tuvo cuatro partidos y cuatro equipos de los cinco pasaron a cuartos de final. La división II tuvo tres partidos y cuatro de los seis equipos pasaron a cuar-tos de final.

El torneo comenzó el jueves 29 de marzo con dos encuentros consecutivos. En el primer partido, Audi se puso por delante de Coca-Cola con 8-5 para acabar ga-nando 15-11. En el segundo partido, La Ensenada mantuvo al campeón anterior, Lechuza en tensión durante la primera mitad pero acabó venciendo Lechuza por 15-7.

El segundo día del Nespresso U.S. Open Polo Championship, celebrado el sábado 31 de marzo, supuso el inicio de los par-tidos de la división II de los grupos de tres equipos. Zacara, ERG y Valiente I fueron los vencedores.

Tras la primera semana del US Open, los equipos fuertes como Lechuza, Audi, Va-liente II en la división I, y Zacara, ERG y

Valiente I mostraban su potencial mientras que otros tenían que recuperarse para te-ner la oportunidad de acceder a cuartos de final.

La segunda semana de la competición comenzó con una victoria de Audi sobre Valiente II por 12-11 lo que lo colocó en segundo lugar tras Lechuza en el grupo I.

El viernes 6 de abril solo se jugó un parti-do entre Coca Cola y La Ensenada, ambos necesitaban una victoria para permanecer cerca del liderazgo Coca Cola consiguió la victoria por 15-8.

Llegó la hora de que la división II con los grupos I y II volvieran al campo con su se-gunda ronda de tres partidos, dos de ellos se jugaron el sábado 7 y el otro el domingo 8.

Valiente I jugó un partido soberbio con paciencia y una buena distribución de la bocha que lo pusieron por delante de ERG por 9-3 a mitad del partido y le dieron la victoria por 18-8.

El segundo partido del día se jugó a las 16:00 con una agradable temperatura durante el fin de semana de Pascua. Alegría hizo un partido soberbio para derrotar a Las Monjitas por 8-6. El par-tido estuvo igualado en todo momento, pero Alegría marcó un gol a principios del sexto chukker que lo puso por de-lante con 8-5 y tras un intento de Las Monjitas que acabó en gol, Alegría re-sultó vencedor por 8-6. Tomás del Río realizó una defensa brillante para Ale-gría durante la segunda mitad.

El domingo de resurrección resultó un día excepcional para el torneo cuando Facundo Pieres se puso la camiseta nº

1 para Zacara, ya que probablemente era la primera vez en muchos años en Estados Unidos en la que un jugador de 10 goles llevaba una camiseta de nº 1 en un partido de polo. Zacara y Orchard Hill estuvieron a la par durante la mayoría del partido, intercambiando el liderazgo en varias oca-siones, aunque sin separarse por más de un gol hasta el sexto chukker cuando tres goles de Facundo Pieres y uno de Magoo

de que empezara el Nespresso US Open de 2012.

LaPrida marcaron la diferencia (4-1) para que Zacara triunfara por 15-12.

Al comienzo del día, Coca-Cola y Lechu-za se turnaron el liderazgo varias veces, Coca-Cola hizo un sólido sexto chukker con 3 goles de Julio Arellano para lograr la victoria por 9-7 y Valiente II, con Santiago Chavanne sustituyendo al ausente Adolfo Cambiaso, tomo ventaja sobre La Ensena-da desde el principio y la mantuvo hasta el final, ganado por 10-8.

Esto finalizó la segunda semana de parti-dos con La Ensenada descalificado del gru-po I con un récord de 0-3, lo que supuso la calificación de facto de los otros cuatro equipos. Coca-Cola igualó su marca 2-2 con victorias sobre La Ensenada y Lechu-za. Audi, Lechuza y Valiente II volvieron a casa con un récord de 2-1.

La tercera semana de los partidos clasi-ficatorios del Nespresso U.S. Open Polo Championship comenzó con Audi derro-tando a La Ensenada por 11-7 el miércoles 11 de abril.

El jueves 12 iba a ser un gran día con cua-tro partidos, tres de ellos para la división II con todos los equipos rivalizando por los 4 lugares en los cuartos de final.

En los dos primeros partidos del día, Le-chuza y Zacara derrotaron a sus rivales Valiente II y Valiente I por 12-10 y 11-9 respectivamente, ambos equipos ocuparon el primer lugar en ambos lados del cuadro con las victorias del día.

En los partidos de la tarde, ERG derrotó a Alegría por 13-10 y Orchard Hill derrotó a Las Monjitas por 7-5; ambos ganadores pasaron a cuartos de final.

Así pues, los ocho últimos estaban prepara-dos para jugar los cuartos de final del US Open el domingo 15 de abril, un día de polo sensacional en IPC. En el primer par-tido celebrado a las 10:00 en el campo nº 2, ERG se impuso a Audi por 12-10

Víctor Vargas recibió un pase adelante y a gran velocidad y presionado por los defen-sas de Orchard Hill, realizó un tiro tremen-do y elevado que dio la victoria a su equipo por 13-11.

El tercer partido se celebró a las 14:00 en el campo Isla Carroll West y enfrentó a Valiente II y Valiente I. Al comienzo del cuarto chukker, Adolfo fue sustituido por Pablo MacDonough y Valiente I siguió aprovechando el momento para superar a Valiente II y demostró una vez más su buen hacer con los caballos y la determinación de sus jugadores con Polito Pieres y Miguel Astrada acabando el partido a lo grande.

El cuarto partido se celebró en el campo Piaget a las 16:00 y enfrentó a Coca-Cola contra Zacara. Facundo Pieres, que llevaba la camiseta nº 1, jugó uno de sus mejores partidos en Wellington con unas tremendas carreras y seis hermosos goles en la primera mitad que le dieron el liderazgo a Zacara por 7-3 frente a Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola volvió del descanso con deter-minación renovada, consiguiendo 2 goles en el cuarto chukker (8-6) pero el mítico

Facundo Pieres tuvo el respaldo del afi nado trío Lyndon Lea, Magoo LaPrida y Mike Azzaro, lo que dio la vuelta a la situación una vez más para conseguir la victoria por 13-7. Facundo fue el juga-dor más valioso de La Martina y su yegua “Elite” fue el mejor caballo jugador.

Las semifi nales se jugaron el miércoles 18 de abril. El público del IPC y los espectadores en Internet de todo el mundo vieron ese día unos grandiosos partidos de semifi nal en el Nespresso U.S. OPEN Polo Championship de 2012. Lechuza fue el ven-cedor de la primera semifi nal derrotando a Va-liente I por 9-8 durante la prórroga en uno de los mejores partidos de la temporada.

El segundo partido estuvo igualado en los últimos tres chukkers. Sebastián Merlos empató a 12 a principios del sexto chukker y Zacara volvió a po-nerse por delante 14-12 con goles seguidos, uno de ellos de Tincho Merlos. Zacara se defendió muy bien contra las repetidas jugadas de gol de ERG, manteniendo la ventaja de un gol para vencer por 14-13.

El domingo 22 de abril fue la gran fi nal en el cam-po Piaget del IPC entre Lechuza, el campeón del año pasado y Zacara. Esta vez fue Zacara quien se llevó a casa el Nespresso US Open Polo Cham-pionship de 2012 con una sólida victoria sobre Le-chuza por 10-8. Mike Azzaro fue el jugador más valioso y Lelani, que montó Facundo Pieres en el 2º y 6º chukker, el mejor caballo jugador.

Los equipos estuvieron muy igualados en la pri-mera mitad con un empate a cada tanto. Zacara se adelantó por uno (5-4) con dos goles de Mike Azzaro al fi nal del tercer chukker.

Juan Martín Nero empató el partido a 5 a prin-cipios del cuarto chukker, pero Zacara volvió a ponerse en cabeza en ese chukker con 3 goles de Facundo Pieres, Magoo LaPrida y Mike Azzaro por 8-5.

Lechuza volvió con fuerza en el quinto chukker, empató con 2 goles de Sapo Caset y consiguió uno más (8-7).

Zacara fue líder de nuevo con 2 goles gracias a un tanto de Magoo LaPrida a principios del sexto chukker alcanzando los 9-7.

A continuación, Lyndon Lea consiguió un gol ex-cepcional que puso el marcador a 10-7 para Zaca-ra. Sapo Caset marcó un gol a los 2:36 al convertir un penalti nº 3 de 40 yardas que produjo el 10-8. Lechuza hizo un gran esfuerzo al fi nal del chukker, pero Mike Azzaro y Facundo Pieres salvaron el día cerca de portería, Zacara estaba fuera de peligro ya que el tiempo corría en contra de Lechuza. m

In Wellington in the weekend of April, Grand Champions Polo Club hosted the YPO 2012 Challenge Cup, a 10 goal tournament for members of the

Young Presidents Association, a worldwide organization of Presidents of companies under 50 years old, with 100+ employees and revenues above $100 millions. Then, the regular members tournament called the GCPC Challenge Cup.

Four teams entered, all players mounted by Marc and Melissa Ganzi, qualifi ers were played on Friday, the fi nal on Sunday. Both Friday games was very close, Power Horse defeated Aqua Caliente 8-7 on a penalty goal by Adrian Laplacette, In the other game, Audi Polo Team defeated Canada 7-6, Audi with a 3 goal lead in the fi fth 7-4 on good plays by David Krantz and Lucas Lalor, Canada coming back strong in the sixth with two goals by Robin Melton and

Jason Crowder, Canada unable to tie and force the overtime.

In the YPO fi nal, Power Horse took a 4-1 lead at halftime on good team play by Melissa Ganzi, Walter Scherb, Adrian Laplacette and Juan Bollini. Power Horse was ahead by 4, 6-2, at the start of the sixth, Lucas Lalor and Jeff Hall with a goal each for a 6-4 fi nal score, Power Horse.

En Wellington durante un fi n de semana de abril, el Grand Champions Polo Club celebró la YPO 2012 Challenge Cup, un torneo

de 10 goles para miembros de la Young Presidents Association, una organización internacional de presidentes de empre-sas por debajo de los 50 años, con más de 100 empleados e ingresos superiores a los 100 millones de dólares. El torneo de miembros regulares se llama GCPC Challenge Cup.

Cuatro equipos se inscribieron, todos los jugadores tuvieron monturas de Marc y Melissa Ganzi, los partidos clasifi catorios se jugaron el viernes, la fi nal el domingo. Los dos partidos del viernes estuvieron muy igualados, Power Horse derrotó a Aqua Caliente por 8-7 en un penalti de Adrian Laplacette. En el otro partido, Audi derrotó a Canada por 7-6, Audi tli-deró por tres goles en el quinto chukker (7-4) con excelentes jugadas de David Krantz y Lucas Lalor. When the tide goes out and the beach widens, there is enough space to turn the sand into

a polo field and the sea into a grandstand, absorbed in the afternoon’s matches in Knokke.

It is an unusual mixture of sand castles built near the horse’s legs, players putting on their boots while spectators take off their beach wraps to watch the game in their

bikinis, lightweight orange balls that end up in the sea and which a distracted bather returns to the umpire for a throw-in.

It is a fusion of entertainment and sport, fashion and competition, of parties at night and polo by day. This is the essence of Scapa Beach Polo in Knokke.

In this year’s competition, the 14th, 6 teams with handicaps up to 12 goals took part. The tournament has gone from strength to strength. The field, the terrace, the number of teams, the crowds and also the expectation it generates have all grown.

On the beaches of Albertstrand, face to face with the imposing art deco casino building, stands a huge marquee where Scapa have set up their centre of operations. Between the casino and the marquee Scapa have their catwalk, where their team of models parade their latest collections twice a day.

After the marquee and heading out to sea, there is a terrace on which to spend the day among friends, watching the polo and sampling delicacies served by a group of teachers from Kapellen, leaving their classes for a weekend to uncork bottles of champagne to the sound of the music selected by DJ Eric Powa.

And between this terrace and the sea, the field is set up on the beach to the rhythm of the tides.

A gallery from the street to the sea, for three days of fashion, parties, dinners, music and a polo spectacle, where taking part is not enough.

Between matches children and girls in bikinis race on the sand, there are fashion shows, carriages and, in the background, the sea and its sailboats and motorboats, whose crews stop to watch the polo without leaving the water.

In the evening a dinner is held for the seven hundred tournament-goers, with over 300 kilos of meat cooked and served by Argentine grill chefs who also know all about horses.

The final

Three-chukka matches in which every minute counts and a final that this year featured the teams Loewe and Scapa Sports.

The first chukka ended 2 goals to 1 in favour of Scapa, with goals from Santiago Cernadas and Michael Redding. Loewe, more organised in the second period, scored the goal that drew the match level as it entered the third and final chukka.

In the third, David Bernal, responsible for all of his team’s goals thus far and was selected as the player of the tournament, scored to put his side ahead, and Santiago Cernadas, with a penalty goal, levelled the match once more, before Bernal responded again with another to bring victory for his team, Loewe.

The Tom Tailor team finished fifth after beating Land Rover, and Merit, winners of the 2011 Scapa Beach Polo, finished third after defeating Pommery.

An informal prize ceremony, full of enthusiasm, jokes, euphoria and colour, is a tradition in Belgian tournaments.

The only time when silence added to the volume of a speech was when, with a great deal of emotion, the mayor of Knokke, Count Leopold Lippens, thaned Michael Redding for the years of polo in the area, pointing out that he has always given generously to the town and never asked for anything in return.

Speaking exclusively to La Bocha by Snoopy Polo, the mayor remarked on how “polo is a way for the town to use the coast and sea for sport, which has always meant a healthy mind in a healthy body. Like all water sports that use the coast. Because when young people are not using these resources, you become an old town full of old people. Knokke is young and will be ever younger”.

The Scapa Sports models that over the course of the tournament featured in the fashion show, competitions and games with Scapa prizes, awarded the prizes to all of the players, eagerly awaiting the moment when the champagne respects nobody, not even the youngsters, models some of them, who applauded and climbed onto the podium to take part of a closing photograph for the tournament with the last rays of sun of a long weekend that seemed incredibly short. m

Es esa la esencia del Scapa Beach Polo in Knokke.

En esta, la edición número 14, participa-ron 6 equipos de hasta 12 goles de hán-dicap. El torneo ha ido de menos a más, ampliando la cancha, la terraza, el núme-ro de equipos, la cantidad de espectadores y también la expectativa que genera.

En las playas de Albertstrand, cara con cara con el imponente edificio art decó del Casino, se levanta una inmen-

sa carpa donde Scapa instala su cen-tro de operaciones. Entre el Casino y la carpa, la pasarela por donde dos veces al día, desfila la plantilla de modelos de Scapa con sus últimas colecciones. Después de la carpa y rumbo al mar, una terraza donde pasar el día entre amigos, mirar el polo y degustar manjares que sir-ven un grupo de maestros de Kapellen, que dejan las aulas por un fin de semana y se dedican a descorchar botellas de cham-pagne al ritmo de la música que selecciona el DJ Eric Powa.

Cuando el mar baja y la playa se hace ancha, queda el espacio necesario para transformar

la arena en cancha y el mar en tribuna, que presencia absorta los encuentros de las tardes

de Knokke.

Y entre esa terraza y el mar, la cancha, que se instala en la playa respe-tando el ritmo de las mareas.

Una galería que va de la calle hasta el mar, para brindar por tres días, moda, fiesta, cenas, música y un polo-espectáculo, donde participar no es suficiente.

Entre partido y partido carreras de niños por la arena y de chicas en bikini, desfiles de modas, carruajes y de fondo el mar surcado de ve-leros y lanchas, cuyos tripulantes se detienen para mirar polo sin salir del mar.

Por la noche cena con setecientos concurrentes y más de 300 kilos de carne cocinados y servidos por parrilleros argentinos que también saben y mucho, de caballos.

La Final

Partidos de tres chukkers, en lo que cada minuto cuenta y una final que este año fue protagonizada por los equipos de Loewe y Scapa Sports.

El primer chukker terminó 2 a 1 a favor de Scapa, con goles de Santia-go Cernadas y Michael Redding.

Loewe, más organizado en el segundo período, marcó el gol que dejó el partido en empate para entrar en el último y decisivo chukker.

En el tercero David Bernal, autor de todos los goles de su equipo y ele-gido mejor jugador del torneo, marcó un gol que los puso por delante y Santiago Cernadas, con gol de penal igualó nuevamente el encuentro para que Bernal definiera con un gol más, el triunfo del torneo para su equipo, Loewe.

El equipo de Tom Tailor se ubicó en quinto lugar tras vencer a Land Rover y Merit, ganador del Scapa Beach Polo 2011, quedó en tercer lugar al vencer a Pommery.

Una entrega de premios carente de formalidad y sobrada de entu-siasmo, bromas, euforia y colorido, como es tradición en los torneos belgas.

El único momento en el que el silencio aumentó el volumen del dis-curso fue cuando, con mucha emotividad, el alcalde de Knokke- Heist, Count Leopold Lippens, agradeció a Michael Redding los años de Polo en Knokke destacando que siempre le ha dado a la ciudad y nunca le ha pedido.

En declaraciones exclusivas para La Bocha by SnoopyPolo, el alcalde remarcó que: “el Polo representa para la ciudad el uso de la costa y el mar, para el deporte, que siempre ha significado mente sana en cuer-po sano. Como todas las actividades acuáticas que utilizan la costa. Porque cuando la gente joven no utiliza esos recursos, te vuelves una ciudad vieja de gente vieja. Knokke es joven y será aún más jóven.”

Las modelos de Scapa Sports que a lo largo de los días del torneo fueron protagonistas del desfile, los concursos y los juegos con premios de Scapa, entregan los premios a todos los jugadores atentas al mo-mento en que el champagne no respete a nadie; tampoco a los chicos, modelos algunos, que miran atentos y aplauden para subirse al podio a participar de una foto de cierre de torneo con los últimos rayos de sol en un fin de semana largo, que pareció tremendamente corto. m

clouds on its side, Knokke

wins the day over many tourist

destinations, offering much

more than just endless beaches,

water sports and dinners with

the sun setting over the sea.

T hese 12 kilometres of beach on the North Sea have been the perfect excuse for building a town imbued with elegance, good taste, a family

atmosphere and a strong fascination with art in all its forms.

Certain rules, which have governed the town for many years, offer an architectural discipline of mostly white houses, which double the high value of the land on which they are built and boast perfect gardens, with no electronic contraptions or objects obstructing the visual harmony. This is through choice, but the law.

Thanks to some streams that only meteorologists can understand, it has the driest climate in Belgium, with 160 days of sunshine per year that make it the promised land for Belgians.

But prudently, it is also ready to cater for tourists on the other days, when the beach is not on the agenda, and it provides a wide range of options, with shops worthy of the world’s great capitals.

Its maze of bike lanes means that practically the entire town can be visited on two wheels, so that tourists can enjoy, in slow motion, the perfect gardens, immaculate houses and the seafront promenade dotted with bars, restaurants and life.

Knokke hosts an annual rock and pop festival, ‘Kneistival’, a fi reworks festival, a folklore market and an international photography festival, with exhibitions on the streets and indoors.

This is just a some of what is on offer, because its openness to the new, to the young, to the creative and the beautiful, is what makes it stay alive. Because it is long-lived but not elderly, very elegant but not stuffy, exclusive without being pedantic.

Back in action. After a time away from the major tournaments, with remarkable resilience, Guillermo Terrera is

winning matches again in England, where he answers some questions for La Bocha by SnoopyPolo.

A brother to many sisters, ‘extremely single’, as he puts it. Born in General Belgrano, Buenos Aires province, where ‘Tatita’, Guillermo Terrera senior, introduced him to polo at 10 years of age.

When in Argentina he now lives in Monte, where he watches his horses, of which he is visibly proud, grow in number and quality.

He has won the Copa Potrillos, the Deauville Gold Cup, the Prince of Wales and other important tournaments.

He has played polo in Argentina, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, the USA, the UK, Spain, France, Switzerland, Russia, South Africa, India, Thailand and China.

And he’s only just started.

His plans for the future, which include the possibility of competing in the Argentine Open, are in keeping with the human being and the player that his words reveal.

What is Guillermo Terrera like as a player? Could you describe yourself ? What are your positive traits and the things you don’t like about yourself, and what is your role on the field?

As a player I always give it my all on the field; I don’t mind being told what to do and I play hard but clean. If I had to tell you the things I don’t like about myself on the field, I’d be here a very long time! [He laughs]

My role depends on the team I’m playing in

and my position. When I play with better players than me, I try to adapt to their game. When I play with 9- and 10-goalers, they take on more responsibilities and it becomes much easier. And when it’s my turn to be the best player in the team, I try to be the one who takes on these responsibilities that I am talking about and to organise my team-mates as best I can.

This year will probably be your debut in the Argentine Polo Open in Palermo. When do you think a player is ready to play in the Argentine Open?

I’ve never played in the Open and to really know whether you’re ready to be there, I think you have to play and experience it. I suppose that being prepared for the Open is about your ability to organise yourself: the horses, the support team... and to be playing at a high enough standard for you to be invited to play in it.

In September I’ll play in the qualifying round for the Open with Chapa II,

alongside El Ruso and Pepe Heguy and Nachi Duplessis.

In February I was asked to play and I’m organising everything so that it all goes to plan.

I feel fortunate and grateful for the invitation.

Are you well mounted? What qualities should a horse have to play in the Open?

I’m fanatical about horses and breeding; I’d say it’s the reason I play polo: to have good horses and to breed well.

I’m putting a lot into making sure I have good horses here in England and in Argentina, which is difficult but not impossible. If one day a horse that I’ve bred becomes one of the stars of the Open, it would be an enormous source of satisfaction for me.

This is the first time I have come to play here in Europe with all my own horses and so far they have been responding very well.

When I play a horse, I like to be able to feel its strength, an agile body and light in the mouth. Basically, an ace! [He laughs] But there aren’t many of those.

Do you think there are some players who are winners and some who are losers, regardless of the team’s circumstances? Those who win in adverse conditions and those who lose with everything in their favour? If so, in which of these groups would you include yourself ?

In all sports there are people who get better when the pressure increases, who looking back in time and at their career were always pivotal at the decisive moments for their team or for themselves. I don’t think a sportsman should be branded a loser because he makes a mistake at

a key moment. Personally, I’ve made mistakes that have cost me a match or a tournament, and things have also gone my way and I’ve had the pleasure of winning. To do something, whether good or bad, you have to be there at that moment.

Your organisation is primarily in England. Why? How is a structure set up so that you are an organised and easy-to-hire professional? Are you?

I was fortunate enough to travel for the first time, in 2002, with an organisation like the Black Bears, and with players like Eduardo and Javier Novillo. I learned a lot, both on and off the field. It was very important to me because it gave me a knowledge base on what a first-class organisation consists of and how it can be achieved. After that trip I realised many things that I started to copy and as I continued travelling I drew my own conclusions. So far I’ve set myself up pretty well and I have a good organisation here in Europe. Its proving to be a bit harder in Argentina because my aim was always to be as organised as possible over here, but

now I can start to think about leaving one or two good horses to play with over there or to take a few.

I like how things are going, because it’s never easy and when they start taking the direction you have always been looking for, it’s incredibly satisfying. Now I’m waiting to play some that I have bred; to help me I have Lolo, who knows a lot and always gives me good advice. And also my old man, who’s an all-round ten-out-of-ten. While he’s there I know I can travel and concentrate on my polo without worrying because he’s so organised. Although we have some arguments because we don’t always think alike, I like the relationship I have with my dad.

What qualities make a player a good professional?

From organising your stables to your lifestyle, it all influences your performance on the field.

For me it’s about enjoying myself as much as possible, without giving up the things you like outside of polo but without

becoming distracted from your job. To be a good professional, I think you need the same thing that you need for everything in life, and which for me is the most difficult thing to achieve: BALANCE.

In 2011 you had to deal with some serious health problems. How did you discover what was happening and what was your initial reaction? How do you fight and win these battles? What lessons does one learn in these situations?

I was playing the Polo Tours in Argentina and I didn’t feel very well. I started doing tests until they told me there were complications. With each test that went by I started to realise it wasn’t just flu. The day they told me what I had I was left speechless, with a knot in my throat and waiting for the doctor to tell me he had got the wrong patient, that it wasn’t me. But that feeling was short-lived because soon the treatment started and from the first chemo everything went on from there. To tell you the truth, it went well thanks to my family and friends, the ones who were there and the many who were away

who called to talk to me and make sure everything was okay.

I had time to think and do things I never do, and I decided to stop doing things I didn’t like and start doing more of the things I like and enjoy. It’s difficult sometimes, but I try to stay calm and start to have a good time again and look ahead. For the time being I’m well and I’m going to do my utmost to remain so.

Is life as it was? In what way has it changed?

In general everything is as it was before: I’m continuing with the same projects, the same dreams and objectives.

One thing I did change was the way I approached these, with more patience and doing things as well as possible so that they gradually work out. I’m very anxious and things do not always arrive when you want, but I improved because I learned to wait a bit and enjoy the waiting more. [He cheerfully admits].

In your view, who’s the boss when it comes to looking after the horses?

In my humble opinion, to get the most out of the horses you have to work as a team and all agree to follow one system. Grooms, vets and players are all very important.

The shoeing is also important for performance, but the other three have to agree on how to approach the care of the horses.

Monte, London, Sotogrande, Buenos Aires?

General Belgrano!

That’s where my oldest friends are; I have a great time when I’m there. But if I had to choose one from the other four places, I would go for Monte, because that’s where I have my little ranch, La Matera, which is where I live and enjoy everything that my job gives me.

Who are your unconditional allies in polo? And in life?

In polo it’s my horses, and in life my friends and family.

What did your parents insist on?

I always saw my father as a hard-working type, persevering and happy to fight to achieve something. My mother always gave me peace of mind; she was always making sure those around her felt at ease and were well fed, because you have no idea how good a cook she is! [He laughs]

But most of all, I am very grateful to have the family and parents I have. They were never very ‘insistent’ about anything. I’ve always done what I have thought best, which is how I’ve done stupid things and they made it known that I had done something bad.

What would you insist on with your children?

I haven’t thought about that yet.

I have seven nephews and for now I’m happy with that. m

ganar partidos en Inglaterra donde contesta a las preguntas de La Bocha by SnoopyPolo.

Hermano de muchas mujeres, “solterísimo” como el mismo se define. Nacido en Gral Belgrano, Pcia. De Buenos Aires, dónde “Tatita”, Guillermo Te-rrera (padre) lo inició en el polo a los 10 años.

Vive hoy en Monte, cuando está en Argentina y allí ve crecer en número y calidad su caballada de la que se lo ve muy orgulloso.

Ha ganado la Copa Potrillos, la Copa de Oro de Deauville, la Prince of Wales, entre otros torneos importantes.

Ha jugado al polo en Argentina, Perú, Chile, Bra-sil, Colombia, USA, UK, España, Francia, Suiza, Rusia, Sudáfrica, India, Tailandia y China.

Eso es sólo el comienzo.

Los planes para el futuro, entre los que cabe la posibilidad de disputar el Argentino Abierto, son acordes al ser humano y al jugador que dejan ver sus palabras.

¿Cómo es Guillermo Terrera como juga-dor? Podrías autodefinirte? Cuáles son tus características positivas y cuales las cosas que no te gustan de vos y cuál tu rol en la cancha?

Como jugador siempre dejo todo adentro de la cancha, no me molesta que me digan lo que tengo que hacer y juego fuerte pero limpio. Si te tengo que decir las cosas que no me gustan de mi adentro de la cancha la respuesta sería muy larga! (se ríe)

Mi rol, depende del equipo en que juegue y en que posición. Cuando juego con jugadores mejores que yo, trato de acoplarme a su juego. Cuando juego con 9 y 10 de handicap ellos asumen mas respon-sabilidades y se hace mucho mas fácil. Y cuando me toca ser el mejor del equipo trato de ser yo quien asume esas responsabilidades de las que te hablo y ordenar a mis compañeros lo mejor que puedo.

Probablemente este año sea tu debut en el Abierto de Polo de Palermo. ¿Cuándo crees que un jugador está preparado para jugar el Argentino Abierto?

Nunca jugué el Abierto y creo que para saber real-mente si estás preparado para estar ahí, hay que jugarlo y vivir la experiencia. Supongo que estar

preparado para el Abierto está relacionado con la capacidad de organizarse: los caballos, el equipo de trabajo… y con estar jugando el suficiente nivel como para que te inviten a jugarlo.

En septiembre jugaré la clasificación para el Abierto con Chapa 2, junto al Ruso y Pepe Heguy y Nachi Duplessis. En el mes de Febrero me pro-pusieron jugar y estoy organizando todo para que salga todo como esperamos. Me siento afortunado y agradecido por la invitación.

¿Estás bien montado? Qué cualidades debe tener un caballo para ser caballo de Abier-to?

Soy fanático de los caballos y de la cría, te diría que esa es la razón por la que juego al polo: tener buenos caballos, y criar bien.

Le estoy poniendo muchas ganas para tener bue-na caballada acá en Inglaterra y en Argentina, eso cuesta caro, por pero no es imposible. Que algún día, un caballo de mi cría sea de los buenos del Abierto, sería una enorme satisfacción.

Aquí en Europa vengo a jugar con todos caballos míos por primera vez y la verdad que, hasta ahora, vienen respondiendo muy bien.

Cuando juego un caballo, me gusta sentir que esta con fuerza , que este ágil de cuerpo y liviano en la boca. En fin, que sea una maquina! (risas) pero de esos hay pocos.

Crees que hay jugadores ganadores y per-dedores, más allá de las circunstancias del equipo? Aquél que gana en condiciones ad-versas, aquél que pierde teniendo todo a favor? Si lo crees, en cual de esos grupos te incluirías?

En todos los deportes hay personas que mejoran cuando la presión aumenta, que mirando atrás en el tiempo y en su carrera siempre fueron protago-nistas en los momentos decisivos para su equipo o para ellos mismos. No comparto que se diga que un deportista no es ganador porque comete un error en un momento clave. En lo personal, he cometido errores que me han costado un partido o algún tor-neo y otras veces, las cosas me salieron bien y pude disfrutar de ganar. Creo que para hacer algo bien o mal, hay que estar ahí, en ese momento.

Tu organización está principalmente cen-trada en Inglaterra. ¿Por qué?; ¿cómo se arma una estructura para ser un profesio-nal organizado y fácil de contratar?; lo sos?

Tuve la suerte de haber viajado por primera vez, en 2002 a una organización como Black Bears y con jugadores como Eduardo y Javier Novillo. Aprendí

mucho, tanto dentro como fuera de la can-cha. Fue muy importante para mi porque me dio una base de conocimientos de lo que es una organización de primera y de como manejarse para lograrla. Después de ese viaje me di cuenta de muchas cosas que empecé a copiar y a medida que seguí via-jando sacando mis propias conclusiones. Hasta ahora que me he armado bastante bien y tengo una buena organización acá en Europa. En Argentina me cuesta un poco más porque mi prioridad siempre fue estar lo mejor montado posible acá, recién ahora puedo pensar en dejarme algún caballo bueno para jugar allá, o llevarme alguno.

Me gusta como se vienen dando las cosas, porque nunca es fácil y cuando van agarrando el rumbo que siempre buscaste, es una satis-facción personal muy linda. Ahora estoy esperando poder jugar algu-no de mi cría; lo tengo a Lolo que sabe mucho y siempre me aconse-ja bien. También a mi viejo, que tiene todo 10 puntos. Estando él se que puedo viajar y ocuparme de mi polo tranquilo porque es muy organizado. Aunque tenga-mos alguna discusión porque no siempre pensamos igual, me gusta la relación que tengo con mi papá.

¿Qué cualidades hacen a un jugador buen profesional?

Desde la organización de tu ca-balleriza, hasta la forma de vida, todo influye en el rendimiento dentro de la cancha. Para mi se trata de pasarlo lo mejor posible, sin dejar de hacer las cosas que te gustan además del polo, y sin desconcentrarse de lo que es tu traba-jo. Creo que, para ser un buen profesional se requiere lo mismo que para todo en la vida, y que para mi, no es fácil: EQUILI-BRIO.

En 2011 te tocó enfrentarte a serios problemas de salud. ¿Cómo te ente-raste de lo que ocurría y cuál fue tu primera reacción?; ¿cómo se pelean y se ganan esas batallas?; ¿qué se aprende en esos momentos?

Estaba jugando los Polo Tours en Argen-tina y no me sentía muy bien. Me empecé a hacer estudios hasta que me dijeron que estaba complicado. A medida que iban pa-sando los estudios yo mas o menos me iba imaginando que no era un gripe. El día

que me dijeron lo que tenía me quede sin palabras, con un nudo en la garganta y es-perando que el doctor me diga que se ha-bía equivocado de paciente, que ese no era yo. Pero esa sensación duro poco porque en seguida empezamos con el tratamiento y a partir de la primera quimio todo fue para adelante. Te digo la verdad, la pase muy bien gracias a mi Familia y amigos, los que estaban allá y muchos de los que estaban de viaje que llamaban para hablar un rato y saber que todo iba muy bien.

Tuve tiempo para pensar y hacer cosas que nunca hago, y decidir dejar de hacer cosas que no me gustaban y empezar a ha-cer más de lo que me gusta y disfruto. A veces es difícil, pero cuando eso pasa, trato de tranquilizarme y empezar otra vez a pasarla bien y pensar para adelante. Por ahora vengo bien y voy a ponerle todas las ganas para seguir así.

¿La vida sigue igual?…, ¿en qué cambió?

En general todo sigue igual, sigo con los mismos proyectos, los mismos sueños y ob-jetivos. Lo que si cambié fue la forma de encararlos, con mas paciencia y haciendo las cosas lo mejor posible para que se va-yan dando de a poco. Soy muy ansioso y las cosas no siempre llegan en el momen-to que uno quiere, pero mejoré porque aprendí a esperar un poco y disfrutar más

de la espera. (Confiesa entre risas).

Para vos, ¿Quién manda en el cui-dado de los caballos?

En mi humilde opinión, para que los ca-ballos rindan al máximo hay que trabajar en equipo y estando todos de acuerdo en seguir un mismo sistema. Petisero, veteri-nario y jugador son muy importantes para que los caballos anden bien.

El herraje es muy importante también para el rendimiento, pero los otros tres tienen que estar de acuerdo en como encarar la cuida.

¿Monte, Londres, Sotogran-de, Buenos Aires?

Gral. Belgrano! Tengo ahí mis amigos de toda la vida, la paso muy bien cuando voy. Pero si tengo que hacer un ranking de los otros 4 lugares, me quedo con Monte porque ahí es donde ten-go mi campito, La Matera, que es donde vivo y disfruto de lo que me da mi trabajo.

¿Quiénes son tus aliados in-condicionales en el polo?, ¿y en la vida?

En el polo son mis caballos, y en la vida mis amigos y mi familia.

¿En qué insistieron tus pa-dres?

De mi padre siempre tuve una imagen de un tipo trabajador, constante y que no tiene problemas de luchar para conseguir algo. Mi madre siempre me transmitió mucha tranquilidad, ella siempre está pen-diente de que los que están a su alrededor se sientan a gusto y que estén bien alimen-tados porque no sabes cómo cocina!! … (se ríe)

Pero más que nada, estoy muy agradecido de tener la familia y los padres que ten-go. Nunca fueron muy “insistidores” con nada. He hecho siempre lo que me parecía a mi y así es como me he mandado ma-canas y ellos me hicieron saber que había hecho algo mal.

¿En que les insistirías a tus hijos?

Eso todavía no lo pensé. Tengo 7 sobrinos y, por ahora, con ellos, estoy bien. m

With the spectator and polo enthusiast in mind, my goal in the following is to dissect

and advise the two best teams of the Argentine Open to bring us closer to achieving a fl awless spectacle on the polo ground, to rival if not to beat the best game of polo ever seen. First, lets look at the players one by one:

Ellerstina

Facundo Pieres – the ‘Explosive One’: An individual super power with skills that can determine the outcome of any game.

Gonzalito Pieres – the ‘Ultimate Team Player’: Relentless worker with exceptional team-play skills.

Mariano Aguerre – ‘Anong the best # 3’s playing today’: A lot of mileage with an uncanny ability to read plays and position himself within the fi eld.

Nico Pieres – the ‘Dark horse, the Spirited One’: The strong-willed apprentice. An unknown quantity who has a bright future ahead of him..

La Dolifi na

Adolfo Cambiaso – the ‘#1 player’: Undoubtedly the best polo player in the world and getting better with age. His key asset nowadays is his ability to adapt his playing technique and style depending on that of the team he is playing with.

Pablo McDonough – the ‘Stylist’: A stylistic player with incredible ball control . Sometimes he only needs to have 2 x good chukka in a game to make a difference.

Pelon – an ‘Icon in the Making’: A solid 10 goal player that is yet to reach his full potential. He has the ingredients and making to become one of the great players of the current game.

Nero – the ‘Silent Giant’: The architect of ‘master-pieces’ on the polo fi eld with an effortless combination of motion, grace and power.

Now, knowing the individuals in question I would like to offer my opinion on each team in turn in their quest for victory:

Ellerstina

To mould these players into a team capable of beating one of the best teams in the history of polo,, my advice to the team is to determine :(1) what is the best line up for the team and (2) to ‘defi ne’ each players role. These are of paramount importance if they are to succeed.

I would like to suggest the following line up – (1) Nico ( 2)Gonzalito (3) Mariano Aguirre and Facundo at back.

Why you ask? With this line up you are organizing the team from the back to the front with the power

coming from behind. Facundo the explosive powerhouse that he is has passes & backhanders that can result in any defence play becoming one of attack.

Aguerre would then have the space and ability to disperse the ball in turn, to two of the world’s fastest polo players up front, namely Nico and Gonzalito. Aguerre would also have tremendous goal capacity and as back up Facundo behind using him as an attacking back.

Gonzalito, we know moulds to any situation and the only thing he needs to grow into being one of the greatest ever # 2 in history, is for his team mates to use him more.

Finally, Nico, obviously the youngest player, is a natural forward. With his youth, strength and quickness and some discipline he could be a nightmare for any back who has to try and contain him.

La Dolfi na

In order for La Dolfi na to maintain their crown and title as the world’s # 1 polo team in my opinion it is crucial that Adolfo continues to lead the team and that he continues to show a more humble and team spirited manner as seen in recent times. If he disciplines himself to play more offensively it will be a delight for any polo enthusiast to watch this team in action.

My synopsis for each team would be

Ellerstina

Ellerstina’s Achilles heal would be their need to grow mentally in order to reach their full potential. They must play as a team not as individuals. The goal is to peak at the right time with the focus on the Open Final and not in the tournaments before..With Aguirre joining the team, he will act as patriarch fi gure to his team mates guiding the team in the way that they require so that they can indeed fl ourish as they hope. In turn Aguirre will have to dig deep to fi nd the power necessary to ensure his style of play has the wanted affect on the fi eld.

La Dolfi na

For La Dolfi na the key is that Adolfo most position himself more forward, stretching his team more and allowing Pelon & Pablo space in the centre of the fi eld so that they can defi ne their roles better. Nero at back, with his team more spread out I believe will become the Emperor of defence. I am also certain that Pelon, given the chance will grow into the ultimate #3 player.

He just needs to identify his function on the pitch as a distributor and his timing, the distance and his reading of the game. Right pass, right timing to right player.I make it sound so easy! ❍

Teniendo siempre presente al espectador y al en-tusiasta del polo, mi objetivo es analizar y acon-

sejar a los dos mejores equipos del Abierto Argen-tino cómo aproximarse a conseguir un espectáculo impecable en el terreno de juego y cómo luchar por lograr el mejor partido de polo nunca visto. Primero, echemos un vistazo a los jugadores de uno en uno:

Ellerstina

Facundo Pieres: el “explosivo”: Un súper poder in-dividual con capacidad para determinar el resultado de cualquier partido.

Gonzalito Pieres: el “jugador de equipo defi nitivo”: Un trabajador incansable con unas habilidades de juego en equipo excepcionales.

Mariano Aguerre: “uno de los tres mejores jugado-res actuales”: Mucha experiencia con una sorpren-dente habilidad para leer jugadas y colocarse en el campo.

Nico Pieres : el “caballo oscuro”, el “brioso”: Un aprendiz con una fuerza de voluntad inacabable con un futuro alentador por delante.

La Dolfi na

Adolfo Cambiaso: el “número 1”: Sin duda alguna, el mejor jugador de polo del mundo que con los años mejora. Su característica clave es la capacidad para adaptar su técnica de juego y estilo al equipo con el que esté jugando.

Pablo McDonough: el “estilista”: Un jugador con estilo y un control increíble de la bocha. A veces solo necesita un par de buenos chukkers para marcar la diferencia en un partido.

Pelón: un “icono en ciernes”: Un sólido jugador de 10 goles que aún tiene que alcanzar todo su poten-cial. Posee todos los elementos para convertirse en uno de los grandes jugadores de la escena actual.

Nero: el “gigante silencioso”: El arquitecto de obras maestras en el campo de polo con una combinación natural de movimiento, gracia y potencia.

Ahora, tras conocer a los jugadores en cuestión, me gustaría dar mi opinión sobre cada equipo y su bús-queda de la victoria:

Ellerstina

Para dar forma a estos jugadores y convertirlos en un equipo capaz de derrotar a uno de los mejores equipos de la historia del polo, mi consejo es: (1) esta-blecer la mejor alineación para el equipo y (2) defi nir el papel de cada jugador. Esto tiene una importancia primordial si quieren tener éxito.

Me gustaría sugerir la siguiente alineación: (1) Nico ( 2) Gonzalito (3) Mariano Aguerre y Facundo en la parte de atrás.

Se preguntarán por qué. Con esta alineación se organizaría al equipo desde la parte trasera a la

delantera, con la potencia llegando desde detrás. Facundo sería el motor explosivo, ya que con sus pases y reveses puede hacer que una jugada defensiva se convierta en una ofensiva.

Con esto Aguerre tendría el espacio y la habilidad para dispersar la bocha hacia dos de los jugadores más rápidos del mundo situados en la vanguardia, es decir Nico y Gonzalito. Aguerre también tendría una tremenda capacidad de gol y como respaldo Fa-cundo desde detrás podría servir de ataque trasero.

Sabemos que Gonzalito se adapta a cualquier situa-ción y lo único que necesita para crecer y convertirse en el segundo mejor jugador de la historia es que sus compañeros de equipo lo usen más.

Por último, Nico al ser el jugador más joven es ob-viamente un delantero natural. Con su juventud, fuerza, rapidez y algo de disciplina, podría ser la pesadilla de cualquier defensa que intente pararlo.

La Dolfi na

En mi opinión, para que La Dolfi na mantenga su corona y el título de número 1 del mundo, es crucial que Adolfo siga liderando el equipo y que continúe mostrando una actitud más humilde y mayor espíri-tu de equipo como hemos visto últimamente. Si se obliga a jugar de forma más ofensiva, hará las de-licias de cualquier entusiasta del polo que vea a su equipo en acción.

El resumen para cada equipo sería:

Ellerstina

El talón de Aquiles de Ellerstina es su necesidad de crecer a nivel mental para alcanzar su máximo po-tencial. Deben jugar como equipo, no de manera in-dividual. El objetivo es llegar a lo más alto en el mo-mento correcto, centrándose en la fi nal del Abierto y no en los torneos anteriores. Al unirse Aguerre al equipo, actuará de fi gura patriarcal frente a sus compañeros guiando al equipo de la forma necesa-ria para que puedan crecer como esperan. Por su parte, Aguerre tendrá que esforzarse por buscar la potencia necesaria para garantizar que su estilo de juego logra el efecto deseado en el campo.

La Dolfi na

Para La Dolfi na, la clave es que Adolfo se coloque más en la delantera, haciendo que el equipo se esti-re y dando espacio a Pelón y Pablo en el centro del campo para que puedan defi nir mejor sus papeles. Con Nero atrás y su equipo más disperso, creo que se convertirá en el emperador de la defensa. Tam-bién estoy seguro de que Pelón, si tiene la oportuni-dad, crecerá para convertirse en el jugador número 3 defi nitivo.

Sólo tiene que identifi car su función como distribui-dor dentro del campo y mejorar el ritmo, la distancia y las lecturas del partido. Pases correctos, en el mo-mento adecuado al jugador óptimo.

One is Gustavo Gómez, who is 40 years old and has spent 14 with Adolfito.

He is from Lobos and started out in polo alongside ‘Chochán’ Garrahan, through his father, Juan Gómez.

He was an assistant to the trainer Pipa Gómez, to whom he is not related despite sharing the same surname, and he decided he wanted to groom for polo when he started work at La Dolfina. He was there for four years without travelling until 2001, “the year when I travelled to England for the first time, working for Adolfito with Zorrino, and it was very a good experience. You learn a lot from him.”

Gustavo is referring to the groom who currently looks after Gonzalo Pieres junior’s horses, who before worked

for Gonzalo Pieres senior and who, in between, groomed for Cambiaso.

In these 14 years with Adolfo Cambiaso he has travelled to the United States and England on numerous occasions and won rugs for turning out the best horses in the competitions. He knows the 10-goaler as well as anyone, spending days with him at the stables and sharing countless matés; in fact it is him that prepares their gourds on the mornings when they sit round to take stock.

“Adolfo always comes along and wants you to sit and have a maté with him; we chat, he comments on things, he tells us things that have to be changed, and we like him to tell us. If a horse is being tricky and we have to reduce its feed, whether it was better or worse, but he always tells us clearly. He’s a guy who always sticks his neck out and tells you what he wants”.

There’s also ‘Araña’ (Spider), or Martín, from General Belgrano. He’s 35 years old and has worked for La Dolfina since 2001. A former Pato player, he reached a handicap of four goals and there learned his trade with the horses, before moving onto polo.

Outside, manning the barbecue is Irineo ‘Neo’ Salvador Sánchez, from Chaco in Argentina, who is 40 and has also worked

in polo for 14 years. He lives in Cañuelas and grooms for La Dolfina, where he started his career in polo, always alongside Gustavo.

The gems that Cambiaso plays with pass through these men’s hands every day.

They usually look after around 20 horses and up to 30 during the Argentine season.

They have their favourites, and they always have.

They remember the names of their mares; for Gustavo it was Niña Bonito (Pretty Girl) and Diosa (Goddess), while for Araña his memories are tinged with sadness as he recalls Aiken Cura, the stallion at the Santamarina ranch which displayed unique qualities from a very young age and which, after being acquired by Cambiaso, realised its full potential.

Aiken Cura played his first open in 2004, and in 2005 he played two to three chukkas per match in the Triple Crown, receiving the Lady Susan Townley prize for the best horse in the tournament and the AACCP prize for best product of a registered player, a prize that a stallion had never won in the final.

Impossible not to remember him, because he ended his career with a broken bone during the 2006 Open in an extra chukka.They recall this dreadful experience with something Adolfito said that summed it up: “Do whatever it takes to save that one!” he shouted... and they tried everything. He was treated by the vet Dr Hugo Amusquibar of the San Isidro Clinic, but despite his attempts they were unable to save him and he died in February 2007.

They remember La Nona, Noruega... and so many others...

And amid laughter they recall La Olivia, with an anecdote taking place in the Hurlingham Open: arriving at the ground, they got the horses off the truck and realised they had forgotten

her. “Adolfito started making a list and wrote her name first, but we didn’t have her; we’d left her at the stables... ‘What do you mean she’s not here?’ He asked...” they recall amid laughter.

“...They are things that happen when you’re in a rush. Fortunately, they won!” says Neo, the man from Chaco, who is the one who remembered the forgotten horse.

The exception that proves the rule must be this anecdote. When it comes to high-goal polo, not much is forgotten; the standards are very high and perfectionism is the common denominator among the 10-goalers. It is a ten that they normally share with their team, with their men, with those who feed the horses, make their beds, adjust the bandages and saddle up. The men who also grill the meat and prepare the maté, making the stables more of a home than a place of work. m

Uno es Gustavo Gómez, que tiene 40 años y 14 con Adolfi-to. Es de Lobos y empezó en el polo junto al “Chochán”

Garrahan de la mano de su padre, Juan Gómez.

Era ayudante del domador, Pipa Gómez, con quien, a pesar de compartir apellido no es familiar, y quiso cuidar para polo cuando empezó a trabajar en La Dolfina. Allí estuvo 4 años sin viajar hasta que llegó el 2001; “En ese año viajé a Inglaterra por primera vez, ya trabajando para Adolfito con Zorrino y fue una experiencia muy buena. Se aprende mucho de él”.

Dice Gustavo refiriéndose al Zorrino, el petisero que actualmente cuida los caba-llos de Gonzalo Pieres hijo, que trabajó antes para Gonzalo Pieres padre y que en el medio, cuidó para Cambiaso. En estos 14 años junto a Adolfo Cambiaso a via-jado a Estados Unidos y a Inglaterra en numerosas ocasiones y ganado mantas de mejores caballos. Conoce al 10 como po-cos, con el comparte días de caballeriza y muchos mates, que como cuenta orgulloso, el mismo ceba en las mañanas de mateadas y balance.

“Adolfito viene todos los días a la caballeri-za, quiere que te sientes a tomar mate con él, charlamos, comenta cosas, nos dice co-sas que hay que cambiar y a nosotros nos gusta que nos lo diga. Si una caballito está bravo y hay que bajarle un poquito la co-mida, si anduvo mejor o peor, siempre lo dice bien. Es un flaco que va siempre de frente y te dice lo que quiere”

También está el “Araña”, se llama Martín y es de General Belgrano. Tiene 35 años

y desde 2001 trabaja en La Dolfina, es ex jugador de Pato, donde llegó a los 4 goles de hándicap y dónde aprendió una prime-ra etapa con los caballos, que se completó con el polo.

Afuera, haciendo el asado está Irineo “Neo” Salvador Sánchez, que es del Cha-co, Argentina, tiene 40 años y también 14 de polo a sus espaldas. Vive en Cañuelas y cuida en La Dolfina donde empezó a tra-bajar en el polo, siempre con Gustavo.

Por las manos de estos hombres pasan cada día las joyas que Cambiaso juega.

Normalmente cuidan unos 20 caballos, que en Argentina en la temporada llegan a 30.

Tienen sus favoritos y siempre los han te-nido.

Recuerdan nombres de yeguas, para Gustavo la Niña Bonita, la Diosa, para el Araña, el recuerdo se mezcla con algo de tristeza, cuando habla de Aiken Cura, el padrillo de la cría de Santamarina que de-mostró desde muy joven cualidades únicas y que al ser adquirido por Cambiaso des-plegó todo su potencial.

Aiken Cura jugó su primer abierto en el año 2004 y en 2005, jugó en la Triple Co-rona entre dos y tres chukkers por partido logrando el premio Lady Susan Townley como mejor caballo del torneo y el de la AACCP al mejor producto jugador ins-cripto, premio que nunca había ganado un padrillo en la final.

Imposible no recordarlo, cuando ade-más, terminó su carrera con una que-

bradura durante el Abierto de 2006 en un chukker suplementario. Recuerdan el mal trago con una frase de Adolfito que lo define todo: “A ese sálvenlo como pue-dan!” gritaba… y así lo intentaron, de todas las maneras. Tratado por el Vete-rinario Dr Hugo Amusquibar de la Clí-nica de San Isidro, pero a pesar de los intentos, no pudieron y Cura murió en Febrero de 2007.

Recuerdan a La Nona, a la Noruega… a tantos otros…

Y entre risas recuerdan a La Olivia, con una anécdota ocurrida en el Abierto de Hurlingham cuando al llegar a la can-cha y bajar los caballos del camión se dieron cuenta que se la habían olvidado: “Adolfito se puso a hacer la lista y la es-cribió primera pero no la teníamos, nos la habíamos dejado en la caballeriza… “¿Cómo que no está?” preguntaba… “se quedó…” cuentan entre risas.“…Son co-sas que pasan cuando salís apurado. Por suerte, ganaron!...” dice Neo, el Chaque-ño, que es quien recuerda a la olvidada.

La excepción que confirma la regla debe ser esa anécdota. Cuando de alto polo se trata, los olvidos son pocos, la exigencia es muy alta y el perfeccionismo el lugar común que agrupa a esos señores clasifi-cados con 10.

Un diez, que normalmente, comparten con su equipo, con sus hombres, con los que dan de comer, hacen camas, ajus-tan vendas y colocan monturas. Esos que también hacen asado y ceban mate transformando la caballeriza en un sitio cálido, con poco de oficina y mucho de hogar. m

It’s 2.45 pm on the Windsor Polo Guards’ clock, the sun is piercing through the menacing clouds. It’s hot and under the Cartier tent, who are the main sponsor of the Queen’s Cup,

the champagne is fresh. Adolfo Cambias with 3 hours left to go, is still sending Polo balls and is having his photo taken by young fans, as he is the best player in the World. This year, Dubai’s polo team, the Cambiaso white team and Nachi Heguy, is up against the Ayala blue team with Gonzalito Pieres and the Neo-Z John Paul Clarkin. In the middle of the field, the Oman riders finish the presentation parade. The Guards Horses follow them out with all the clapping.

Only 5 minutes to go, and Arana and Gustavo, Adolfo’s trusty petiseros, invite him to ride Cautiva. At 3pm, the presentation of the teams : Iñigo Zobel, Ayala’s patron, Gonzalito pieres, John

Paul Clarkin and Tomas Garbarini, which makes a total of 22 Handicaps. On the Dubai side, Rashid Albwardy, Igniacio Heguy, Alec White and Adolfo Cambiaso.

First Chukker, who beautifully sends the ball, Heguy gets away, and resists a collison with Clarkin’s mallet, followed by Garbarini, who is pushing his house, and takes the lead from Heguy and crosses the line. The umpire Julian Appleby choses 30 yards ... Nachi Heguy scores a goal, 1-0 for Dubai. Cambiaso is juggling with the ball, dribles and loses it, Gonzalito Pieres takes over, who draws after going straight for 60 yards. 1-1. All of a sudden, Adolfo takes the ball into a mallet forest, a forest of legs and heads off alone to score with Boy, his alezan horse. 2-1

The match domainated by Cambiaso’s horses becomes more balanced, Ayala replies illico to Dubai, the giant Clarkin

on misses an opportunity and races in canter, giving a draw of 2 everywhere at the end of the Chukker !

Second Chukker, Alec White, a young Australien, Handicap 2 passes like a high speed train to serve to Nachi Heguy: 3-2. It’s the wake up call for the “small” players who get their level higher, stimulated by the 4 stars. Tomas Garbarini, h3, opens in back on JP Clarkin who is marking for Ayala. 3-3. reaches only 3 meters from the goal posts and hits the pole. 1 minute later, Peter Wright, the second referee of the match, whistles a fault from Gabarini on Heguy. Nachy Heguy scores a penalty from 30 yards, 5 to 4. Like in a practice with a flabbergasting facility, Adolfito takes the ball on the throwin and goes off on his own standing up in the stirrups, in Manbo’s saddle and scores Dubai’s sixth goal. At the end of the Chukker, Gonzalito Pieres misses a penalty, but succeeds the next after Cambiaso does a fault which crosses the line. 6-5 at the break.

Whilst the thousands of watchers are invited by Greg the speaker to repair the ground by filling up the holes, the Guards Polo Club flag is making it’s way up the matt, signaling the Queen and her husband’s presence. The Queen, with a powder blue coat and matching hat sits in the Queen’s Box; the match may start again!

Fourth period : Gabarini tries to stop Cambiaso who misses the young Argentin scoring, and scores. 7-5 for Dubai. Less than a minute after, Nachi Heguy scores, as if it had been carried by the Queen’s smile and the cheers from the public. 8-5. An immediate counter attack from John Paul Clarkin who attempts in parallel billionaire’s goals, between the horse’s legs, fail. It will be Gonzalito who once more scores a goal from 30 yards from Ayala. 8-6. Adolfo Cambiaso before the end scores for Dubai. 9-6.

In the fifth Chukker, Gonzalito Pieres scores 4 goals and Adolfo Cambiaso 1, the 2 teams are at a draw of 10-10, at the end of this extraordinary period, the sexiest of the final.

The sixth and last period is a résumé of the Finale, Gonzalito’s and Adolfo’s “Mano a Mano”, and they both score a goal; 11-11. Nachi Heguy has a fault, so Gonzalito Pieres hits next to him, and it’s finally Adolfo Cambiaso who gives the “puntilla” to Ayala, who is rolling on the ground opposite the “Maestro” Cambiaso and his cuadrilla. Dubai wins 12-11.

El reloj de Windsor Polo Guards marca las 14:45 y el sol atravie-sa unas nubes amenazadoras. Hace calor y bajo la tienda Car-

tier, principal patrocinador de la Queen’s Cup, el champán está fresco. Adolfo Cambiaso, con 3 horas por delante, sigue fi rmando bochas y se hace fotos con los jóvenes afi cionados, ya que es el mejor ju-gador del mundo. Este año, el equipo de polo de Dubai, el equipo blanco de Cam-biaso y Nachi Heguy, se enfrenta al equipo azul Ayala con Gonzalito Pieres y el neo-zelandés John Paul Clarkin. En mitad del

campo, los Oman Riders acaban su desfi le de presentación. Los Guards Horses los si-guen fuera con todos los aplausos.

Sólo faltan 5 minutos y Araña y Gustavo, los fi eles mozos de cuadra de Adolfo, le invitan a montar a Cautiva. A las 15:00 se realiza la presentación de los equipos: Iñigo Zobel, el patrón de Ayala, Gonza-lito Pieres, John Paul Clarkin y Tomas Garbarini, lo que supone un handicap to-tal de 22. En el bando de Dubai, Rashid Albwardy, Ignacio Heguy, Alec White y Adolfo Cambiaso.

En el primer chukker, la bocha se despla-za con belleza. Heguy se escapa y resiste el choque con el taco de Clarkin, seguido por Garbarini, que empuja con fuerza, se pone por delante de Heguy y cruza la línea. El árbitro Julian Appleby elige 30 yardas... Nachi Heguy marca un gol, 1-0 para Dubai. Cambiaso hace malabares con la bocha, dribla y la pierde. Gonzalito Pieres la recoge y se dirige derecho a las 60 yardas. 1-1. De repente, Adolfo mete la bocha en un bosque de tacos, piernas y cabezas que deja atrás para marcar con Boy, su caballo alazano. 2-1.

El partido, que estaba dominado por los caballos de Cambiaso, se equilibra y Ayala responde ante Dubai. El gigante Clarkin no pierde una oportunidad y corre a medio galope para conseguir un empate a 2 al final del chukker.

Segundo chukker. Alec White, un joven australiano con un handicap de 2, pasa como un tren de alta velocidad para servir a Nachi Heguy: 3-2. Es un toque de atención para que los “pequeños” ju-gadores aumenten su nivel estimulados por los jugadores de 4 estrellas. Tomas Garbarini, h3, se abre en la parte pos-terior hacia JP Clarkin que marca para Ayala. 3-3. Después, todo va bien para los azules de Ayala. Una bocha olvidada por el patrón de Dubai, Rashid Alwar-dy, cae en manos de Gonzalo Pieres que cabalga a medio galope cerca de las tablas y marca desde las 60 yardas. 4-3. Cambiaso responde al momento galopando con Chester que, cerca de las tablas, logra el empate para su equi-po. 4-4 en un ángulo muy cerrado. Un

hermoso y potente gol del mejor juga-dor del mundo. Tercer chukker: Iñigo Zobel, realiza un golpe precioso desde el centro del campo que se queda a solo 3 metros de los postes de la portería y da en el palo. 1 minuto después, Peter Wright, el segundo árbitro del parti-do, pita una falta de Gabarini contra Heguy. Nachi Heguy marca un penal-ti desde las 30 yardas, 5 a 4. Como si estuviera en un entrenamiento, Adolfito atrapa la bocha con una facilidad pas-mosa en un saque de banda y escapa por su cuenta sobre los estribos de la silla de Mambo para marcar el sexto gol de Dubai. Al final del chukker, Gon-zalito Pieres falla un penalti pero logra el siguiente después de que Cambiaso cometa una falta al cruzar la línea. 6-5 en el descanso.

Mientras que Greg, el presentador, in-vita a miles de asistentes a reparar el te-rreno llenando los agujeros, la bandera del Guards Polo Club sube por el más-til, indicando la presencia de la Reina y

En el quinto chukker, Gonzalito Pieres marca 4 goles y Adolfo Cambiaso 1, los 2 están empatados 10-10 al final de este extraordinario tiempo, el más intere-sante de la final.

El sexto y último tiempo es un resumen de la final, un mano a mano entre Gon-zalito y Adolfo, en el que ambos marcan un gol: 11-11. Nachi Heguy comete una falta y Gonzalito Pieres golpea junto a él. Finalmente es Adolfo Cambiaso quien da la puntilla a Ayala, que se encuentra al otro lado del campo frente al maestro Cambiaso y su cuadrilla. Dubai gana por 12-11.

Según Nachi Heguy: “La victoria es de Adolfo, él solo marcó la diferencia.”

Adolfo Cambiaso: “La final ha sido ver-daderamente una película de Alfred Hitchcock hasta el último momento.”

Todo estaba preparado para la ceremonia de Dubai. La Reina Elizabeth II felicita a Adolfo, que hace una reverencia y da las gracias a su Majestad. Unas diez cáma-ras de televisión y otros tantos fotógrafos están interesados en el logro de Adolfito, que una vez más ha jugado en la tercera dimensión. What made our father such a good polo teacher was the incredible way he could take control of a

big group of very different people and tune them into his way of thinking and polo coaching. Every Summer for over 20 years clients would come to learn polo at Whitfi eld Court in Ireland. They hailed from a wide variety of backgrounds and nationalities, but the Major had a gift for imparting his knowledge to everyone, regardless of where they were from or what they did. I personally witnessed several cases where people who had never ridden a horse in their lives came

to the polo school and just fi ve days later they were able to participate in chukkers, having mastered the basics of the sport thanks to my father’s teaching. A phenomenal achievement given how diffi cult and intimidating polo can be to most adults wishing to learn the game.

One of his greatest attributes was that he was always trying to improve the state of the game and the attitudes of players and patrons in general. He always felt that coaching needed to be a fundamental part of the sport at every level, as it is with virtually any other sport. He felt strongly that polo should be a real team sport, with

all four players on a team participating equally to the best of their abilities. In his mind, he felt that the top professionals had too much power to infl uence the game and that the patrons needed to understand their own value on the fi eld of play, rather than just letting the professionals dictate everything. By introducing coaching at every level he felt that the pressure would be taken off of the professionals and they would be free to concentrate on their own game, while patrons would benefi t from having an outside perspective that would enable them to greatly improve their role and enjoy the sport more by increasing their participation.

From a personal perspective (David) he did everything he could to help and encourage me with the sport. He started to teach me the game when I was only 10 years old and passed on his love and enthusiasm for the game. When I was at school in England he arranged for me to have the use of two polo ponies at Guards polo club and was very supportive when we started a polo team at school. When I then went on to Bristol University he sent me four ponies to use at the Beaufort Polo Club. My best memories are from 1992 when we entered a family team into the two most competitive polo tournaments in Dublin. Dad, Sebastian and I played with Australian fi ve goal player Robert Cudmore in the 8 goal tournament in June and then the three of us played with seven goaler Horacio Fernandez Llorente in the 12 goal tournament in August. We won both tournaments and dad hugely enjoyed being able to play with his two sons, while being very proud that he was able to mount both teams with ponies from his own breed.

I caught the polo bug when I was 13 (Sebastian) and I remember clearly sitting at the tactical talks he used to give to clients at the polo school week after week in the Summer months. I remember how he used handle diffi cult clients who tried to ask too many questions, rather than just taking his advice at face value, by saying to them “you must surely be a lawyer”! I enjoyed watching the surprised reaction of clients to this statement and from then on they would refrain from asking more silly questions and would begin to listen to his lessons! After fi nishing school when I was 18 he lent me four lovely ponies to play and groom in Cirencester and after that I was very fortunate to be able to start a high goal career in England. The many telephone conversations I had with him over this time greatly helped to keep me grounded and he often gave me a lot of very useful advice. Like David, I greatly enjoyed being a part of our successful family team back in 1992. In addition, one of my fondest memories is of playing with dad in the arena when

he was 72 years old and off 2 goals. His vast experience was very apparent as he was able to consistently outfox younger players with his tactical knowledge.

Our parents met at a lunch given for the players of the British Army Polo team by the Argentine Polo Association at the club in San Jorge. Our mother was very attracted by our father’s bald head and she tapped him on the head with a polo whip in order to get his attention. He was so shocked that someone could be that daring that he immediately fell in love! She has lots of wonderful memories of all of the family trips that we did together to Florida, Mexico, Kenya, Argentina, etc, where dad went to teach polo clinics year after year.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I am now a fully qualifi ed Coach and i am carrying on many of his methods and teaching techniques and also following his dream to try and bring coaching to all clubs, teams and individual players. m

During the production of POLO VISION (a book and video on polo techniques) I spent a few weeks with him and his family in Waterford. As I did when I provided photos and videos for his famous clinics at Palm Beach in the late eighties and early nineties. In this time I learned things from him that I remember to this day, proof that he teaches people not just how to play polo but also how to approach life.

I remember the Major used to say that horses should have rear-view mirrors so they can be ridden along the game lines, just like they were needed in life, so we know where our problems are coming from. A term to which he attached great importance has been etched on my memory: ‘ADJUST’

In life and in polo, the message was to adapt to each situation.

Today, when I read the exquisite contribution from his children and see David, Sebastian and María Inés’ willingness to play a part in La Bocha by Snoopy Polo, I imagine that he must have given his family the team spirit that he advocated so much. They have provided plenty of evidence of this, by sending everything they had within their reach to make sure the man who showed that ‘charity begins at home’ received all the recognition he deserved.

From someone who had the good fortune to enjoy some good times with him, days of work that left their mark on polo and life itself.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Hugh Dawneys passing and I suspect there will be many more, who like me have been lucky enough to have enjoyed his inspirational teachings on the Polo Fields. I remember like it was yesterday attending a Polo clinic at Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in Florida almost 20 years ago and I can today say it was the one most infl uencing experience that got me to take up and continue playing this wonderful sport. There can be no doubt that this kind (and spirited Major) has played a very important role in the development and growth of the sports popularity throughout the World over the last four decades. Today all Polo “afi cionados” have benefi tted in one way or another from Major Hugh Dawney’s contributions to the sport over the years and his legacy will undoubtedly live on. m

Lo que hacía de nuestro padre un profesor de polo tan bueno era la forma increíble en la que podía controlar un gran grupo

de personas muy distintas y adaptarlas a su forma de pensar y de enseñar polo. Cada verano a lo largo de 20 años, los clientes venían a aprender polo en Whit-field Court (Irlanda). Venían de diferen-tes origenes y nacionalidades, pero el Mayor tenía un don para compartir sus conocimientos con todo el mundo, inde-pendientemente de dónde fueran o de lo que hicieran. Yo mismo he visto varios casos en los que gente que jamás había montado en su vida, llegaba a la escue-la de polo y en cinco días podían jugar chukkers, ya que habían dominado lo básico del deporte gracias a las enseñanzas de mi pa-dre. Se trata de un logro fantástico dado lo difícil e intimidante que puede ser el polo para la mayoría de los adultos que quieren aprender a jugar.

Uno de sus mayores atri-butos era que siempre in-tentaba mejorar el estado del juego y las actitudes de los jugadores y los pa-trones en general. Siempre creía que el entrenamiento debía ser una parte funda-mental del deporte a todos los niveles, de igual forma que lo es prácticamente en todos los deportes. Es-taba convencido de que el polo debía ser un autén-tico deporte de equipo, con los cuatro jugadores del equipo participando igualmente al máximo de sus habilidades. Creía que los mejores profesionales tenían demasiado poder para influenciar el juego y que los patrones tenían que comprender su propio valor en el campo de juego, en lugar de simplemen-te dejar que los profesionales lo dictaran todo. Al introducir el entrenamiento en todos los niveles, creía que se aliviaría la presión sobre los profesionales y que éstos podrían concentrarse en su propio juego, mientras que los patrones se bene-ficiarían al tener una perspectiva externa que les permitiera mejorar enormemente su función y disfrutar más del deporte al aumentar su participación.

Desde una perspectiva personal, dice Da-vid, hizo todo lo que pudo para ayudarme y animarme en el deporte. Comenzó por enseñarme a jugar con solo 10 años y me inculcó su amor y entusiasmo por el juego. Cuando estaba en el colegio en Inglaterra, lo organizó todo para que yo pudiera usar dos caballos de polo en el Guards Polo Club y me prestó su apoyo cuando creé un equipo de polo en el colegio. Después, cuando fui a la universidad de Bristol, me envió cuatro caballos para que los usara en el Beaufort Polo Club. Mis mejores recuer-dos son de 1992, cuando inscribimos el equipo familiar en los dos torneos de polo más competitivos de Dublín. Papá, Sebas-tian y yo jugábamos con el jugador de cin-co goles australiano Robert Cudmore en el

torneo a 8 goles de junio y, después, los tres jugamos con el jugador de siete goles Ho-racio Fernández Llorente en el torneo a 12 goles de agosto. Ganamos ambos torneos y papá disfrutó inmensamente al poder jugar con sus dos hijos. También se enor-gullecía de que pudiera montar en ambos equipos con caballos criados por él mismo.

Me picó el gusanillo del polo cuando tenía 13, dice Sebastian, y recuerdo cla-ramente sentarme en las charlas tácticas

que él solía dar en la escuela de polo se-mana tras semana, durante los meses de verano. Recuerdo cómo se encargaba de los clientes difíciles que hacían demasia-das preguntas en lugar de aceptar sus consejos diciéndoles “Seguro que eres abogado”. Yo disfrutaba viendo la sor-presa de los oyentes ante esta frase y a partir de ahí, se lo pensaban antes de ha-cer preguntas innecesarias y empezaban a prestar atención a sus clases.

Tras terminar el colegio cuando cumplí 18, me prestó cuatro caballos preciosos para que jugara y los cuidara en Ciren-cester y después fui muy afortunado al poder empezar mi carrera en el polo en Inglaterra. Las muchas conversaciones

que mantuvimos a lo largo de este periódo me ayuda-ron enormemente a mante-nerme centrado y a menudo me dio muchos consejos úti-les. Al igual que David, tam-bién disfruté mucho al jugar en el equipo familiar en 1992. Además, uno de mis recuerdos más gratos es el de jugar con papá en la arena cuando él tenía 72 años y 2 goles. Su amplia experiencia se hacía evidente al superar continuamente con sus co-nocimientos tácticos a juga-dores más jóvenes.

Nuestros padres se cono-cieron en un almuerzo or-ganizado por la Asociación Argentina de Polo en el club San Jorge para los jugado-res del equipo de polo del ejército británico. Nuestra madre se sintió muy atraída por la cabeza calva de papá y le dio un toque en ella con una fusta de polo para lla-mar su atención. Él se sintió sorprendido de que alguien pudiera ser tan atrevido que

al momento se enamoró. Ella conserva muchísimos buenos recuerdos de todos los viajes familiares que hicimos a Flori-da, México, Kenia, Argentina, etc. en los que papá enseñaba polo en clínicas año tras año.

Ahora soy entrenador cualificado y sigo muchos de sus métodos y técnicas de ense-ñanza y, además, sigo su sueño de intentar acercar el entrenamiento a todos los clu-bes, equipos y jugadores individuales.m


IN MEMORIAM

Durante la producción de POLO VISION (libro y video sobre técnicas de Polo) compartí unas semanas con él y su familia en Waterford. También aporté fotografía y vídeos a sus famosas clínicas en el Palm Beach Polo a fi n de los ochenta y principios de los noventa. En ese tiempo, aprendí de él conceptos que aún recuerdo, como prueba de que no solo enseñaba a jugar al polo, sino también a enfrentar la vida.

Recuerdo que el Mayor decía que en el caballo serían necesarios los espejos retrovisores, para poder manejarse por las líneas de juego, como eran necesarios en la vida, para saber nuestra ubicación frente a los problemas. Me ha quedado muy grabado el término en el que él hacía tremendo hincapié: “AJUSTAR”.

En la vida y en el polo, el mensaje era adaptarse a cada situación.

Hoy, cuando leo el exquisito aporte de sus hijos y veo la predisposición de David, Sebastian y María Inés en colaborar con La Bocha by SnoopyPolo, pienso, que ha dejado en su familia la consigna del trabajo en equipo que tanto predicó.

Muestras han dado de eso, al enviar los elementos a su alcance para que no falte el reconocimiento a quien supo demostrar eso de “la caridad bien entendida…”

Desde quien tuvo la suerte de compartir y disfrutar con él, días de trabajo que dejaron huella en el polo y también en la vida.

Me entristeció profundamente saber acerca del fallecimiento de Hugh Dawney y creo que habrá mucha gente que, al igual que yo, tuvo la suerte de disfrutar de sus motivadoras enseñanzas en las canchas de polo. Recuerdo como si fuera ayer asistir a un seminario de polo en el Palm Beach Polo and Country Club de Florida hace casi 20 años y, a día de hoy, puedo decir que fue una de las experiencias que más me han infl uido para animarme a seguir jugando a este magnífi co deporte. Sin duda alguna, este amable y enérgico Mayor ha jugado un papel fundamental en el desarrollo y crecimiento de la popularidad de este deporte en todo el mundo a lo largo de las últimas cuatro décadas. Hoy día, todos los afi cionados al polo disfrutan de una forma u otra de las contribuciones del Mayor Hugh Dawney al polo a lo largo de los años y su legado continuará vivo sin ninguna duda.m

On a rainy Berkshire afternoon, Les Lions overcame Talandracas by 11 goals to 9.

It was well deserved, thanks to their dynamic and open game, and their ability to take advantage of their penalties. With the right idea, but a

questionable way of going about it, their case was brought to court under the title ‘The candidate who only defeats himself ’.

They had to prove that they wanted to win, that they were the architects of their own destiny.

Facing them were the champions of the

2011 Queen’s Cup: Talandracas, also beneficiaries of 40 and 60-yard penalties, on that cold and raining morning 48 hours earlier.

Between them, the rain, an infallible feature of the season, makes for difficult field conditions and a crowd committed to the party but without celebrations.

Different needs, urgency needed. For Les Lions it was a matter of obligation, while Talandracas were hopeful that they could

in some way appropriate their opponent’s desire for victory.

The first News came in at the start of the match. Sebastián Merlos, one of the top 5 players in the world, received a mallet to his upper-right jawbone, up near the nose, which presaged a nocturnal suture in London. The adversity brought the best out of him; it took away accuracy, but not the overwhelming spirit that he is known for and which occasionally hurts him.

Agustín Merlos was intermittently in tune, but with his fire-power intact and worthy of admiration: Les Lions were in control on the scoreboard.

The Gladiators of Passion, Lucas Monteverde and Milo Fernández Araujo, kept it simple, hitting long and putting pressure on the backs, avoiding mistakes, waiting for those of their rivals... and it worked pretty well, but they failed to be effective over the last 30 yards, something they miss and must resolve.

I want to emphasise the sportsmanship and competitive spirit of Joachim Gottschalk, as well as his good reading of the game, and Mr Carmignac for his enthusiasm, and the efforts of both to be competitive, adding lustre and prestige to the match.

Matt Perry and Chris McKenzie limited themselves to doing what they had to, with the obligation not to fail, a mission impossible, though this did not prevent them from standing out at times and providing glimpses of a massive future for both of them in every competition that is a credit to polo.

LES LIONS tinged the afternoon with blue, winning 11-9; the precise, ironic even, explanation for the result, is that they got the tactics right in the last three minutes.

Lucas Monteverde’s departure due to injury in the dying moments, the arrival of the beloved and skinny Gaztambide, and nevertheless they managed to level the score on 9 each.

ganando 11 a 9, la explicación exacta, hasta irónica del resultado, es que jugó correctamente en lo táctico, los últimos tres minutos.

La salida de Lucas Monteverde por lesión, cuando el partido agonizaba, el ingresó el querido flaco Gaztambide y a priori de lo pensado lograron igualar el escore en 9.

Dos penales surgidos de la obtención de la bocha donde se gana y se pierden los partidos, los throw - in, dejaron caer el telón azul sobre el Berkshire Club.

This Dutchwoman living in the south of England worked as a model in Antwerp and played

enough polo to fall in love with its colours, its smells and its traditions. Today, married to

Chris Bethell, she combines both worlds, designing and making exclusive jewellery in a

magical setting.

Ambersham is not an imaginary place, though it could easily be mistaken for one. It is a hamlet that is real enough to house the

polo fields of the same name, where the majority of the matches in the British Gold Cup are held, two miles from Midhurst, West Sussex, and about three quarters of an hour from London.

It is reached through a maze of narrow lanes in which you can easily get lost if you are not familiar with them, but arriving at

the destination has its reward: the thousand shades of green of the countryside and the rolling landscape, the afternoons of polo in which the setting changes with the weather, crisp and clear mornings alternating with golden, radiant ones, perfect for a picnic and some high-goal polo.

A house overlooks the fields, and in the house, lives a jewellery maker who is the protagonist of this story: Nicci Bethell.

Born in the south of Holland, Nicole

got into polo in Antwerp and arrived in England after meeting the man who is now her husband: Chris Bethell.

Chris, as a player, enabled her to experience from close up the atmosphere that inspires the jewellery she makes in her own workshop, with all the qualities of its creator: finesse, warmth and exclusivity. She knows the materials that polo is made of and uses them in her work: leather, horsehair, silver and gold are combined in unique works of art.

What is it like for a Dutch girl living in the English countryside?

For a city girl like me, life here is very different. At first it was a bit difficult to adapt, but then my children were born, Inez (13) and Max (11), which helped me become part of local life and meet some lovely people. If there is one thing that has never changed in my life it’s the horses, and I can’t imagine life without them.

When the kids started school, I had time to do “something creative” and working with precious metals was something I learned at West Dean College in Chichester, where I had the pleasure to started my courses with Barbara Christie. She then invited me to do further studies with her in London which I did for the next two years. She has been my great inspiration ever since.

How do you approach your work? Like a hobby, a business or a way to express yourself ? What is it you like most about it?

My creations are a way for me to express

myself. I’m inspired by people and places. Sometimes it’s fashion, but most of all it’s polo people, who have an incredible sense of style. I love seeing the way they dress and how they combine their wardrobe; when I design my jewellery I often imagine a person wearing it.

The best thing? Receiving a request for a commission from someone. I love creating a special piece, which is not alway easy but certainly the most rewarding.

As Nicole speaks she conveys her passion for what she does. Asked who her jewellery is aimed at, she tells me that it is for anyone who loves their individuality. Nothing is repeated in her designs, everything is unique and personal.

How long does it take you to create a piece?

In reality, it depends on what type of piece it is and the materials being used. I love working with gold, especially 18 karat, for its warm colour and the way it reacts to heat. A gold ring with no stones can take over a week from the moment I start designing it until it’s finished, but

production itself takes no longer than two days.

Nicci receives special requests from customers for the most part from the polo world, and she dreams of expanding her business and going beyond London and Antwerp with her samples; but she also dreams of using her creations for charity work.

“Perhaps create a small symbol to help raise money for good causes. At the moment I am creating a bracelet for the James Wenthworth-Stanley Memorial Fund, a charity run by Clare Milford-Haven, mother of James and Ambassador of Jaeger Le Coutre who sponsors Polo.These things give my work a whole new meaning.”

In the mean time, Nicci is enjoying her days in these fairytale surroundings, which become the epicentre of world polo for a few weeks every year.

Inez and Max are growing up living an outdoor life, in which the hours go by to the sound of bells marking the end of chukkas and the workshop at home where jewellery is born. m

Me inspiro en gente o en lugares. Algu-nas veces en la moda pero sobre todo en gente del polo que tiene un estilo increí-ble. Me encanta ver la manera en que se visten y como combinan su vestuario, muchas veces cuando diseño alguna de mis joyas puedo imaginarme una perso-na usándola.

¿Lo mejor? Recibir un pedido de alguien; me gusta muchísimo crear una pieza es-pecial, algo que no siempre es fácil pero sin duda, es reconfortante

Nicole habla y transmite pasión por lo que hace. Al preguntarle para quién van dirigidas sus pie-zas, me dice que es para todo aquel que ame la

individualidad. Nada se repite en sus diseños, todo es único y personal.

¿Cuanto tardas en crear una pie-za?

En realidad, depende de que tipo de pie-za y de los materiales que use. Me gusta mucho trabajar con oro, especialmente de 18kt. Por su color cálido y la forma que reacciona al calor. Un anillo de oro, sin piedras puede llevarme más de una semana desde el momento de diseñarlo hasta dejarlo terminado, pero la produc-ción en sí no dura más que dos días.

Nicci recibe pedidos especiales de su clien-tela que proviene en la mayoría del polo, y sueña con ampliar su negocio y llegar más allá de Londres o Amberes con sus muestras; pero sueña también, con utili-zar sus creaciones para obras de caridad. En este momento estoy creando una pul-sera para la Fundación James Wenthwor-th-Stanley Memorial, dirigida por Clare Milford-Haven, madre de James y emba-jadora de Jaeger Le Coutre, patrocina-dor de polo.

Esas cosas le dan a mi trabajo, un signifi-cado completamente nuevo.”

The Royal Windsor Cup, sponsored for the last six years by the UAE-based Al Habtoor Group, is one of the

most prestigious trophies at Guards Polo Club. It dates from 1955, the same year as the club’s inauguration, and is one of the top medium-goal tournaments in the British sporting calendar.

Sixteen teams entered this time round, and competition was fierce, although in the end it boiled down to Clarita Black – whose patron is a Guards member, Chris Mathias – and El Remanso/ Loro Piana, put together by the Hanbury family.

Having been led onto the field at Smith’s Lawn by the band of the Scots Guards, the teams gave the large crowd a game to remember. Clarita Black, who received half a goal on handicap, had been victorious in all their previous matches and by the end of the opening chukka were ahead by an enviable 5 ½ -1. The crowd settled down to watch what, at first, appeared to be a walkover, particularly as Clarita had brought in 20-year-old Jack Richardson as a subsitute for Ed Hitchman, who had been injured in a game a few days previously.

Richardson, from Knepp Castle Polo Club in Sussex, turned out to be the star player, and quite rightly was named Most Valuable Player of the match. His skill proved invaluable and, with the help of Tom de Bruin, he held the field for Clarita Black right up until the third chukka.

Then, all of a sudden, El Remanso/Loro Piana fought back. Charlie Hanbury and Argentinian super-star Eduardo Heguy narrowed the gap to 5 ½ – 4 by half-time. As it happened, the difference was to remain the same for the rest of the game, both sides managing two goals each and, on the last bell, Clarita Black ahead by an extremely close 7 ½ – 6.

The Queen, who was present with Guards’ president the Duke of Edinburgh, presented the cup to Chris Mathias. She was accompanied to the presentation by Khalaf Al Habtoor,

founder of the Al Habtoor Group; Jock Green- Armytage, chairman of Guards, and the club’s chief executive Neil Hobday. Mathias’s pony, Eleonora, played in the first chukka, was named Best Playing Pony. Khalaf Al Habtoor also received a presentation, in tribute to his support of the tournament.

The subsidiary final for the Mountbatten Cup, which recalls the late Earl Mountbatten of Burma, a s founder-member of the club, was won by Tony Gerard’s Montana, which beat Emlor S, put together by Spencer McCarthy, by an equally narrow 7-5.

The day had started with an exhibition match between members of the Al Habtoor family, keen polo players from the UAE. Mohammed Al Habtoor’s Habtoor Polo, for which he had recruited his sons Ahmed and Habtoor and 6-goal international Guillermo Cuitino, defeated Rashid Al Habtoor’s Mahra Polo, 5-3. Rashid’s line-up included his sons Khalaf and Tariq and another well-known South American professional, Pepe Araya. It was a fast-flowing game and the young Al Habtoor boys have made great progress in the standard of their play since last season.

Among the Queen’s guests was Monty Roberts, well-known around the world as the ‘Horse Whisperer’. He is also the founder of Join Up, which works towards the ending of violence in training horses, and of which the Queen is patron.

The presentations included certificates to those who have made a significant contribution to Join Up, notably Mexican brothers Memo and Carlos Gracida, two of the most popular and successful polo players in the recent history of the game, both of whom reached the ultimate handicap of 10-goals at the height of their careers. A similar award was made to Adolfo Cambiaso. Best polo player in the world

Spectators also enjoyed a display of carriage driving, organisied by the British Driving Society, in front of the Royal Box. m

La Royal Windsor Cup, patrocinada los últimos seis años por el Al Habtoor Group, con sede en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, es

En esta ocasión se inscribieron 16 equipos y la competición fue feroz, aunque al fi nal se redujo a Clarita Black (cuyo patrón es miembro del Guards, Chris Mathias) y El Remanso / Loro Piana, reunido por la familia Hanbury.

Tras ser conducidos al campo de Smith’s Lawn por una banda de Scots Guards, los equipos ofrecieron a la multitud un

partido digno de recordar. Clarita Black, que recibió medio gol por handicap, había salido victorioso de todos los encuentros anteriores y al fi nal del chukker de apertura iba por delante con un envidiable 5 ½ -1. El día había comenzado con un partido de exhibición entre miembros de la familia Al Habtoor, unos competitivos jugadores de polo de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos. Habtoor Polo de Mohammed Al Habtoor, que había reclutado a sus hijos Ahmed y Habtoor

y al jugador internacional de 6 goles Guillermo Cuitino, derrotó a Mahra Polo de Rashid Al Habtoor por 5-3. La alineación de Rashid incluía a sus hijos Khalaf y Tariq y a otro conocido profesional sudamericano, Pepe Araya. El partido fue de ritmo rápido y los jóvenes Al Habtoor demostraron grandes avances en su juego desde la temporada anterior.

A total of six men’s teams battled it out for the Copa Air Europa, while four women’s

teams competed for the Copa Aeropuertos 2000. After three days of exciting matches, on Sunday 24 June, the men’s team sponsored by La Dolfina, comprising Cedric Schweri, Paolo Veronessi and Adolfo Cambiaso, claimed the trophy following an enthralling game against the Ciroc team, made up of Albert Scholl, Gautier Feneztraz and Andrea Vianini. It was the second time Cambiaso had won the Ibiza Beach Polo Cup after his victory in 2011. The Argentine player has participated in and won the most important polo tournaments on the planet and his presence in the Ibiza Cup raises the profile and competitive standard of the event.

In the women’s competition, it was the team sponsored by Air Europa and made up of Katie Jenkinson, Vicky Feneztraz and Hazel Jackson that claimed the Copa Aeropuertos 2000, after going up against Angela Robb, Klarina Pitcher and Lucy Taylor representing the team sponsored by Hotel Aguas de Ibiza.

In addition to Adolfo Cambiaso, stars like Nick Roldan, Nina Vestey and the supermodel Jodie Kidd, a big fan of the sport, displayed their talent at the Ibiza Polo Club, which

recently became the first federated club in the Balearic Islands.

Nick Roldan, a member of the team sponsored by Atzaró, is considered the best player in the US. Like him, Nina Vestey, who plays polo every year in the English season, came to Ibiza for the first time to play at the new polo club.

In addition to these world-famous players, plenty of celebrities made sure they were at the event, which is now considered an unmissable fixture on the polo calendar, like the British singer James Blunt, who was enjoying a holiday on the island with his girlfriend, or the Spanish singer Soraya Arnelas.

Ibiza is the perfect place for playing and developing polo due to its climate, location and allure for people all over Europe. Known for its parties and nightclubs, the island also offers an idyllic setting in which to relax or enjoy an exciting sport like polo.

With this third event, the Ibiza Beach Polo Cup has consolidated itself on the world polo calendar as another occasion for lovers of the sport to add to their list. The next polo event in Ibiza takes place in October, with the first Sunset Beach Polo tournament to be held in San Antonio. m

Nick Roldán, que participaba en el equipo pa-trocinado por Atzaró, está considerado como el mejor jugador de Estados Unidos. Al igual que él, la polista Nina Vestey, que participa todos los años en la temporada inglesa de polo, acudía por primera vez a Ibiza para jugar en el nuevo club de polo.

Además de estos deportistas de renombre inter-nacional, han sido muchas las personalidades que no han querido perderse este evento, con-siderado ya como una cita ineludible del polo, como el cantante británico James Blunt que acudió acompañado de su novia, aprovechando sus días de vacaciones en la isla, o la cantante española Soraya Arnelas.

Ibiza constituye un entorno idílico para la práctica y desarrollo del polo por su clima, ubicación, y el atractivo que supone para los ciudadanos de toda Europa. Conocida por sus fiestas y clubes nocturnos, la isla ofrece también un paisaje idílico del que poder disfrutar para descansar o disfrutar de un deporte tan apasio-nante como éste.

Con esta tercera edición, el Ibiza Beach Polo Cup se reafirma en el calendario polístico mun-dial como otro de los eventos a tener en cuenta para los amantes del deporte. Será en octubre cuando tenga lugar la próxima cita con el polo de Ibiza, en el primer Sunset Beach Polo, que se celebrará en San Antonio. m

As the bonfi res of Saint John’s Night die out on Spain’s beaches,

the lights of the local fairs start to come on, houses and bars

and restaurants open up for the summer and for the endless

days that start by the sea and end with afternoons of polo and

parties.

The 340 road between Malaga and Cadiz, just over its intersection with the Guadiaro River, there are polo fi elds on each side of the river:

On one side Los Pinos, where the Santa María Polo Club holds the Sotogrande high-goal season, and on the other, the Río fi elds, where the medium-goal tournaments take place.

Between the towns of Guadiaro and San Enrique, very close by, and under the Puente de Hierro bridge, the fi elds of the same name host the low-goal tournaments.

In late July and throughout August the pace of the polo is unstoppable.

Few tournaments in the world give players the opportunity to take part in so many matches in such a short period of time, and provide the sponsor with an uninterrupted presence not just on competition days but also in the social scene that continues until the early hours on the fi eld.

Nine teams are involved in the High-Goal competition which begins on 27 July and ends on 1 September with the fi nal of the Gold Cup.

Las Monjitas, Ellerston, Dos Lunas, Ayala and Scapa never miss it, HB are returning and El Rosario and Leones are joining the fray for the fi rst time. The matches are held every afternoon on fi elds numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4.

It will be an opportunity to see players of the stature of Juan Martín Nero, Facundo Pieres, Agustín Merlos, Eduardo Novillo Astrada and Marcos Di Paola in action, among many others.

The Medium-Goal matches will take place at the Río fi elds; eight teams in this case will compete for the Bronze, Silver and Gold Cups until the end of August.

These are Santa María Johnsmith, Isola-Esperanza, Woodchester, Santa Quiteria,

Seguriber, Seven-Sevens, La Indiana and St Mesme.

In the Low-Goal, to be held at the Puente de Hierro fi elds, the participants will be Bisontes, Santa Quiteria, Silex, Gotzila, Capial and La Querencia. Though other teams are expected to confi rm their involvement, it is likely that there will be eight participants.

Like in previous years, the matches will be overseen by professional referees. Messrs Ferrari, Martelli, Diaz Alberdi, Boudou, Lopez Vargas, Vidal and Fernandez Llorente will come from Argentina to work throughout the tournament alongside British referees Peter Wright and Julian Appleby.

Together they will be responsible for maintaining as calm an atmosphere as possible in a season never free of controversy, resulting from the large number of hard-fought matches and the desire to win at all costs that professionals and patrons are imbued with.

Santa María Polo Club are tirelessly seeking new ways to ensure fair results.

This year the club has added possibility of a video referee to view the plays that result in contentious fouls as part of its ongoing quest to host one of the best polo seasons in the world.

The classic tournaments of the summer season will begin in July, including the Conde de la Maza Tournament, the Fundador Enrique Zóbel and the Toñanejo, for fi ve and twelve-goal teams respectively.

This year all the terraces on the main Los Pinos IV fi eld have been extended and raised a level, which will undoubt-edly make it more comfortable and provide better viewing for the specta-tors. Plenty of celebrities will make an appearance in Sotogrande, as they do every summer, to enjoy an afternoon of sport and entertainment, making the tournament an unmissable event over the Costa del Sol summer.

Cuando las fogatas de la Noche de San Juan se apagan en cada playa

de la costa española, comienzan a encenderse las luces de las Ferias,

las casas y las terrazas se abren al verano y a los días interminables

que comienzan junto al mar y terminan en tardes de Polo sucedidas

por fi estas.

En la Carretera 340 que une Málaga con Cádiz al pasar por su intersección con el Río Guadiaro, hay canchas a ambos lados del Río:

De un lado Los Pinos, donde se disputa la temporada de alto gol del Club de Polo Santa María en Sotogrande, del otro, las canchas del Río; allí, tienen lugar los torneos de mediano hándicap.

Entre los pueblos de Guadiaro y San Enrique, muy cerca de allí, y debajo del Puente de Hierro, las canchas del mismo nombre, albergan los torneos de bajo gol.

El ritmo POLO durante el mes de agosto y los últimos días de julio es imparable.

Pocos torneos en el mundo dan al jugador la posibilidad de participar de tantos encuentros, en un período tan corto de tiempo y al auspiciante, la de una presencia ininterrumpida, no sólo en las jornadas competitivas, sino en la vida social que continúa en las canchas hasta altas horas de la noche.

Nueve equipos son los protagonistas de el Alto Gol que comenzará el 27 de Julio y fi nalizará el 1 de septiembre con la Final de La Copa de Oro.

Las Monjitas, Ellerston, Dos Lunas, Ayala, Scapa son infaltables, Lechuza regresa, HB repite y El Rosario y Leones se incorporan. Con encuentros a disputarse diariamente en las canchas de número 1, 2, 3 y 4 por la tarde.

Esa será la oportunidad de ver en acción a jugadores de la talla de Juan Martín Nero, Facundo Pieres, Agustín Merlos, Eduardo Novillo Astrada y Marcos Di Paola entre muchos otros.

Los partidos del Mediano hándicap tendrán como escenario las canchas del Rio; ocho equipos en este caso disputaran las copas de Bronce, Plata y Oro hasta el fi nal del mes de Agosto.

Ellos son Santa María Johnsmith, Isola-Esperanza, Woodchester, Santa Quiteria, Seguriber, Seven-Sevens, La Indiana y St Mesme.

Para el bajo hándicap a disputarse en las canchas de Puente de Hierro los participantes serán Bisontes, Santa Quiteria, Silex, Gotzila, Capial y La Querencia. Aunque aún se espera la incorporación de otros equipos que no han confi rmado su participación, es probable que sean 8 los participantes.

Se cuenta con un arbitraje que estará en manos de referees profesionales como en años anteriores. Los Sres Ferrari, Martelli, Diaz Alberdi, Boudou, Lopez Vargas, Vidal y Fernandez Llorente, que vienen de Argentina para permanecer activos durante todo el torneo y los británicos Peter Wright y Julian Appleby.

Serán todos ellos los encargados de mantener un clima lo más calmo posible en una temporada nunca exenta de polémica, como resultado de los numerosos partidos de una competencia extrema y el deseo de ganar a toda costa que invade el ánimo de profesionales y patrones.

El Santa María Polo, busca incansablemente nuevos medios para alcanzar resultados justos.

Este año se incorpora la posibilidad para el tercer hombre, de ver la repetición de aquellas jugadas que ocasionen fallos confusos en esa búsqueda constante de seguir siendo los anfi triones de una de la mejores temporadas de Polo del mundo.

El mes de julio comenzará con dos Torneos clásicos de la temporada de verano, como el Torneo Conde de la Maza, el Torneo Fundador Enrique Zóbel, y Toñanejo para cinco y doce goles de hándicap respectivamente.

Este año se ha ampliado y elevado a un nivel más todas las terrazas de la cancha principal Los Pinos IV, lo que sin duda ofrecerá mayor comodidad y mejor visión para los espectadores. Rostros famosos también se dejarán ver por Santa María Polo Club como cada verano, para disfrutar de una tar-de de ocio y deporte, consiguiendo que este torneo sea uno de los puntos im-prescindibles a visitar en los veranos de la Costa del Sol.
