Iwas reading the new Peter Jamesnovel, Not Dead Yet, and it made merealise just how lucky I have been.

Lucky, of course, that I am not dead atthe hands of one of his murderouscharacters; lucky that I am not, for themost part, held in the same disdain ashis journalist Spinella too.

Parts of the new book take hisvillain and his hero into the majordome of the Royal Pavilion. It’s a spacethat is now closed to visitors, but onethat I was lucky enough to be taken toa few years ago. A spooky place,neglected but with an eerie history.The walls are covered in the names ofhospitalised soldiers from the timewhen the Pavilion was seconded as amilitary hospital. Perhaps their ghostswalk the corridors late at night.

This job certainly has its privileges,and I have been behind the scenes inmany places that the general publicare not allowed to go. Including thedark recesses behind the opulentproscenium arch of the Theatre Royal Brighton.

Now the Theatre Royal has come up with a splendid idea to fill the darkmonth when they do their annual updates and running repairs. There havebeen three events that take you, the public, backstage so far but there is stilltime to catch the final one.

The theatre does have its own famous ghost, the Lady in Grey. By allaccounts she is a placid creature, not a scary one, and some think that shemay be the ghost of Sarah Bernhardt, the great French actress who appearedat the theatre back in 1894, but it is more likely that it is the ghost of thetheatre’s most famous manager, Mrs Nye Chart, the legendary woman whoran the theatre from 1876 to 1892.

There are other ghosts too, a man and two children, spooky stuff and allthe more so when staged in the darkened theatre.

Apparitions (Friday 17 and Saturday 18 August) promises to be this – anempty theatre, out of hours and after dark, full of dark shadows, unexpectednoises, and fleeting glimpses of theatre ghosts – or is that just yourimagination? An atmospheric experience of stories and suggestion that willbring you out in goosebumps.

When I came back from Cuba four weeks ago, the dishwasher wasbroken. I had left The Big Son in charge of the house (and, moreimportantly given him a rent reduction in order to do so) and he had

promised that it would be immaculate when I returned from my holiday. On myreturn, I was less than delighted to discover a kitchen that could have featuredin an episode of the programme following the grime police around Britain.There were piles of filthy dishes everywhere and a dishwasher full of evenmore filth plus about three inches of stagnant, stinking water. The Big Son wasof course nowhere to be seen.

Even before I went to bed after my 10-hour flight, I felt compelled to clearthe kitchen surfaces of dirty dishes. I had not yet worked out that thedishwasher was completely broken, figuring the problem was more likely tobe one of human error. Later, having switched said machine on to do a fullcycle, during which itappeared to do nothingbeyond making a terriblegrinding noise and produceeven more filthy water, Irealised I would have to callout ‘the man’ to have a look atit. With a heavy heart andonly two hours sleep, Iemptied the dishwasher andhand washed all the dishesthat had been sitting there for– looking at the clumps offlourishing bacteria –probably about a week. Still,The Big Son was nowhere tobe found and the anger that Iwas hoping to direct at himwas waning somewhat.

A week later, ‘the man’ cameout to look at the machine,claiming it would need a newpump. Whenever any piece ofhousehold machinery needsrepairing at Landlady Towers,it is always totally normal forthe requisite part to cost morethan the machine itself andthis is exactly what happenedwith the dishwasher. At £250,the new pump would be only£30 cheaper than buying abrand new dishwasher. The dishwasher man declared the machine not worthfixing and took it away, leaving a sad gap in the kitchen units. I decided to buya new dishwasher in the end and, after a month of washing up after threechildren and at least four lodgers, I have finally ordered it and hopefully, it willbe arriving next week. The Big Son and I bumped into each other in the kitchenearlier this week and he was carrying piles of filthy crockery which,presumably he’d been storing in his room for the past month. I was a littlealarmed, yet not entirely surprised, when he asked where the dishwasherwas. Full marks for observation then. The Landlady has a handful

N umber 33a BrunswickSquare is a whole hiddenhouse, not a flat as the

letter in its name suggests. It issituated in the north-west cornerof the square, tucked out-of-viewto the side of No. 33.

I first saw No. 33a when myfriend, the late Mike Robins, livedthere. When I have written aboutit before, it has been in thecontext of both its uniqueposition and also its sheer size.I’ve always been intrigued as tohow such an incredible house,with a hidden front door but nofront windows, could come intoexistence. A great pile of historicdocuments that were recentlyshown to me by resident NealeThibaut offered some clues.

When building a large square,in this case in the Regency style,a decision must be taken on howto treat the corner buildings(there is a similar conundrumwhen it comes to ordering kitchenunits). A diagonal façade servesNo. 33 whilst a secret door withinthat building’s porch serves No.33a behind. No. 33a was certainlynot original to the square but I dowonder whether it was built on orsplit from No. 33.

There was certainly a school in one or both of the houses from the 1830suntil the 1890s. The fee was 100 guineas per year (with an extra 6 guineas forlaundry). The use had certainly changed by 1898, at which point a complaintwas made about a hotel being in operation. Again, it is hard to tell if this appliedto one or both. The strange thing is that the deeds suggest that the current No.33 is smaller and a different shape, and that nothing existed on the spot whereNo. 33a currently sits. It is strange because street directories of the day givethe names of No. 33a’s residents.

John Bacon, a local property developer who bought No. 33a in 2004,remembers it well. He purchased it as four large flats that had each been dividedinto bedsits from the resident landlady who had owned the building since beforethe Second World War. After much restoration work, it ended up as seven self-contained flats with three new quite special houses (61-65 Brunswick StreetWest) in the large garden behind.

There aren’t many places in ourhouse I haven’t stood in sincebefore becoming a dad but we are

replacing the shelves in the alcovewhich were built a month before TheBoy was born.

The Boy, now almost eight, stood inthe alcove while I unscrewed batons oftwo by one. I felt that I was in some sortof Alcove Pre-Parenthood TimeMachine™. (I’m registering this one. It’sgold dust.) My pencil scribbles on eachbaton and choice of rawlplugs had asense of history. Even if they merelysaid ‘this way up’ or were a red/yellowchoice respectively, they hinted at anearlier, more innocent, time.

I stared at my own handwritingwaiting for a time-shift spark, just as, inmuseums, I become fascinated by aletter written by Charles I before hisexecution or a postcard home by a FirstWorld War soldier. Yes, my comparisonsare facetious and I apologise now.

My dad had helped me construct theshelving then, and he accompanied meto IKEA to bring back its replacementthis time. He is the Go-To Man for thatparticular alcove. Perhaps, if it really isan Alcove Pre-Parenthood TimeMachine; when he steps into it, I don’texist. This column might disappear in apuff of smoke.

Where (and when) was I? Having been to IKEA – the air filled with the smellof anticipation and chipboard – I am later alone with the boxes which depict aman looking sad carrying the item I’ve just bought. I think of it as a warning.Then I notice a picture of two men looking a lot happier. This seems to beabout friendship. It’s nice of IKEA to get in on the act of social cohesion. Oh,hang on, it needs two people.

There were slight hiccups in its construction. Midway through theconstruction, I had to stop because of other emergencies, and Youngest™and The Boy decided the exposed dowling could serve as pegs in a pretendshop. Bits snapped. Ironically, we therefore had to visit a real shop to getreplacement dowling.

Later – and I think this is why two fit, strong people are so happy on the side of the box – there was lifting to be done. My wife and I did managethis, eventually, and I feel we both deserve at least an honorary bronze in weightlifting.

Once in place and fastened to the wall, the technical DIY phrase thatkept coming to mind was: “That’s not going anywhere.” In any space ortime. Which is good for safety, but I’m not sure it’s going to be my AlcoveTime Machine after all.

Ifinally made it to Arundel. The land of dreams! Well, mainly the land ofcastles, lidos and cream teas. We went for the castle but discovered 1957.It was like going happily back in time. There was a butchers, a bakers (and

no candlestick makers) but loads of cake shops and most importantly a shopthat sells teapots made in the shape of toilet cisterns.

There was a pub closed till 5pm, a pub that didn’t take card payments, anda pub that only sells ready salted crisps... 1957 was awesome. It’s nice tothink there are still places that aren’t open 24 hours, have their own butchersand the most addictive thing sold on its street corners is cream cakes.

The castle is huge. Of course a castle is huge! What was I thinking...? Ittook hours to view, up steep hills and up thin staircases (that I’m sure someof the tourists could not fit up). I was knackered after the first mount fromthe ticket office to the castle gate. I don’t know how those 11th century typesdid it. I was tired just holding my five year old’s hand up a hill, never mindracing up pinging arrows at knights in turrets.

I felt sick at onepoint and had toleave the five year oldand my boyfriend tofind a seat. They wentup the Castle Keep tothe flag and laterfound me sitting in aroom of buffaloheads. Me on a benchwith a line of elderlypeople. The elderlypeople looked at melike I hadn’t earnedthe seat. I almostpointed at my hair:“It’s the humidity! Look, myfrizzy hair is weighing me down!”

I saw a young lad having to sitdown after feeling dizzy; thesecastles weren’t meant for theheat I guess. They are incrediblystuffy. All the air is encouragedto be kept in, perhaps. I tried toimagine being there in the 12thcentury with no 13.5 tog duvet, (I am the kind of woman who wears thermallong johns in bed in the summer – I actually did this week). My boyfriend nowunderstands that I really do ‘feel the cold’. Well, this particular day I wasreally feeling the heat!

Most of the seats had rope over them (so you wouldn’t sit in the oldchairs), so anything not roped off I sat on it. The five year old loved the daytrip. It was a surprise! When she asked where we were going on the train, wejokingly told her we going to visit a sewer. Well, that backfired as she didn'tthink this weird, after all, five year olds talk about poo constantly! So I’m notsure if going to see a castle rather than a sewer was better or worse. Butnumber one summer day trip: done. Good parent points: 10. Next trip: sewer?Not on a hot day though...

Anyone with children can tell you that, from the minute they’re born, teenytiny babies require an awful lot of stuff. And the amount of stuff growsdisproportionately alongside the child – wooden trains, Puffles, Lego,

Moshi Monsters – you might think that this improves when they reach teenageyears, but no. And this proliferation of things needs space and a place to live sothat Junior has room to play with whatever takes their fancy that day, orsimply to be able to trot into bed (if only) without impaling their tiny feet onthe edge of toys. What do kids need from a bedroom? This week, LatestInteriors takes a deep breath and ventures into the children’s room...

Go to sleepSmall babies, up until the ages ofaround one (or when they startwalking, whichever comes first) don’tneed very much in terms ofaccommodation. A peaceful space tosleep is the one essential – thoughthis can be a cot or Moses basket inMum and Dad’s room to begin with.Cots with adjustable mattress levelsare useful as you keep the mattresshigh (for easy access) when baby islittle, and move it down as they getolder to prevent climbing out. If youwant something that will last, then acot bed – which converts to a juniorbed later – might be the perfectsolution. Look out for models withunder-unit storage. A pre-walkinginfant’s storage needs will mostly be for feeding, clothing and nappyparaphernalia – as well as somewhere to keep the buggy (this can be wheregood understairs storage comes into its own).

Other things to consider include a good, comfy chair (for those late-nightfeeds), and black-out curtains or blinds (well, you never know).

From toddler to tweenagerRooms for older kids need a little bit more thought.Sleeping areas need to be quiet, comfortable, andrelaxing – forget bedroom TVs, and think instead ofmaking a space that’s practical, safe and clean, aswell as appealing and personal to your child. Bunk-style beds, with a lower storage, work or play area,are brilliant if space is tight. Central lights can becolourful, but don’t forget a night light (or a stringof fairy lights) for those little souls that worryabout the dark.

And storage. Again. Toy storage isabsolutely essential – as soon as Juniorstarts moving around, bits of wood andplastic will invade every corner of yourhome. Start off with simple baskets andboxes if you like (toddlers love to unpackthem), but as things progress a good-sized toy box can be a godsend. Modular,multi-level units with pull-out boxes arebrilliant for putting it all away (don’texpect it to stay there).

Terrible teensTeenage bedrooms are the biggest challenge. As well as accommodating toys andtreasures from early childhood (you may never get to throw that dog-eared teddyaway...), the teenage bedroom needs clothes storage, grooming space (includinga good-sized mirror), audio-visual storage, and then some. Teen rooms are allabout the teen. Information technology is an essential component of teenage life– include desk space and take the need to house and manage any hardware intoaccount (even if they use a laptop from their bed). Provide a comfortablesleeping area, thick curtains, plenty of wall-space and Blu-Tack. And, if you wantto splash out, consider soundproofing. Well, don’t say we didn’t warn you...
