F acebook, you either love itor you hate it. I still love it,I like being able to chat to
friends and family, it keeps mein touch and to some extent outof trouble, filling my sparemoments with silly word gameswith which I become obsessed.
But it does have a fewsurprises and the other daythere was a big one. An oldfriend kindly posted aphotograph of me from aroundnineteen years ago. Now I don’tmind old photos and I don’t mindthis one, but it was rather asurprise to see it on the worldywidey web.
It dates back to an eventorganised by the excellent MrPaul Kemp and back then heregularly ran an Alternative MissBrighton competition. I admit tohaving been a little the worsefor drink when a dear friend andcostumier persuaded me thathe should make a costume andthat I should enter. I agreed andthen immediately forgot. A fewweeks on he called me to afitting and the rest is, as theysay, history.
The event was amazing andthe costume huge. Few saw it inadvance so when I was finally led on stage by two near naked boys, blindfoldedand on cruxifixes the crowd went mad and I won. It was a very special momentand one that I will never forget, well not now that the pic is on Facebook.
The original Alternative Miss World was conceived by artist Andrew Logan. Imet him a few times back in my Chelsea days and have always loved hisglamorous slant on life. Coincidentally Andrew Logan’s film The British Guideto Showing Off will open in cinemas on November 11 with an exclusive 'DressUp' preview of the film at the Duke Of Yorks on 6 November.
How I wish I still had the costume so that I could go along wearing it. How Iwish that had I got the costume it would still fit me. Life is such a drag!

A s much as I ammotivated by the topicsof planning and
architecture, there is nothingthat gets me more riled thanthe subject of populationgrowth and its impact onhousing supply.
It is hard to pinpoint thepositives of a growingpopulation; whether thatgrowth is locally, regionally ornationally. In a developedcountry like ours, a growingpopulation is not a symptomof a problem as it is in partsof Africa – but it can be a realproblem in itself.
When it comes to housinglocally, the solution appearsto be simply to build as manyhomes as is humanly possiblein locations that might well beput to much better use. Toad’sHole Valley, on the way out ofHove, is one such spot butany green area could be upfor grabs ultimately. Brighton& Hove City Council is, afterall, making plans for another11,000 homes.
There is often an argumentagainst new homes concerning infrastructure. There won’t be the schools,hospitals and roads. I agree but I would just say build each of these things. My concern is that an increasing population is unsustainable but also thatwhat has been built in recent years (presumably to house as many people as possible as cheaply as possible), has been dreadful – and what is plannedwill be worse.
It is sad that people fear new buildings and, on the whole, would alwayschoose green spaces over them. It doesn’t have to be like this. I can’timagine ever campaigning for Brunswick Square or Terrace to be knockeddown to be fields again. But think of some of the less imaginative buildingsin the suburbs around Brighton & Hove. There was clearly huge pressure forhousing after the Second World War which led to the construction of homesthat I would, to be perfectly honest, happily replace with grass.
I am keen to see a surge in how much is built locally but am quite specificabout what it should be. I’d much rather see converted houses turned backinto what they were designed to be – proper family homes. Alongside this, Iwould be fascinated to see a return to the construction of purpose-builtblocks of flats of a type not seen since the 1930s.

M y life has changed significantly since thedeath of my mother. I have joined a gym, I have started to learn Arabic and I have
started to watch Downton Abbey. The latter is themost shocking thing of all. I am also spending farmore time than is healthy on the telephonearguing with auctioneers and grandfather clockspecialists. My mother’s will, which was recentlyread to me by my cousin, who is executor, leftmoney to various people and organisations, thenthe rest of the estate to be split equally betweenmyself and my three children. At the funeral, Iwas approached (somewhat inappropriately, Ithink) by a relative who asked for a nest of tablesfrom my mum’s living-room. Later, anotherrelative equally brazenly asked if I had any plansfor my mum’s tumble-dryer.
This, I have to say, is the beauty of having anexecutor, because all such enquiries have to gothrough him. In the meantime, I am trying to helpas much as possible by getting individual itemsvalued. The famous grandfather clocks seem tobe a sticking point, as for some reason many of
those who work in the grandfather clock industry, such as it is, seem to havea deeply unpleasant disposition. For example, I telephoned one such businessin The North yesterday and, if I hadn’t backed down, would have ended uphaving a Jeremy Kyle-worthy screaming match with the chap on the otherend. Bearing in mind, I am no grandfather clock expert and have no idea oftheir value, the conversation went something like this;
Me “Hello, I have a couple of grandfather clocks to sell.”Mr Grumpy “How much do you want for them?”Me “Erm. I don’t know. I have no idea what they’re worth.”Mr Grumpy “I expect I can give you something in the low hundreds.”Me “But you haven’t seen them.”Mr Grumpy “Well, I don’t want to. Time is money. I’m not coming to see them
and give you a value just so you can sell them to someone else.”Me “Who else?”Mr Grumpy “Just someone else, after I’ve come out and valued them.”Me “So it’s a bit of a chicken and egg situation then? I would like to sell them
to you, but you won’t value them, so I don’t know how much to sell them for?”Mr Grumpy “That’s about the long and short of it, yes.”Me “Right, erm, well, I’ll get back to you then.”I bade him good afternoon and hung up, although I was tempted to ask for
the telephone number of the deeply mysterious ‘someone else’, who clearlypaid more than Mr Grumpy for grandfather clocks in The North. And quitefrankly with that attitude, I’m not surprised that grandfather clock sellers arebeating a hasty retreat. I phoned my oldest friend earlier today. He’s becoming a dad for the firsttime in about five weeks. He moved house two months ago, and he’scurrently methodically taking his DVDs out of their boxes and putting
them in plastic sleeves. He doesn’t know, does he? Just get into bed, I want to tell him. Get into
bed, get yourself four and a half weeks of solid sleep. Because once the babycomes, there won’t be another chance.
I’m wise now. I wasn’tjust before The Boy wasborn. We too had justmoved house and Iprioritised creating a herbgarden outside our backwindow, digging over awhole new area, plantingmint, thyme, oregano androsemary. I don’t think Iventured outside foranother eighteen months.
I should have just doneall those things I’d beunable to do once thebaby was born. Sat downwith a massive cup of teaknowing I wouldn’t beinterrupted. I could havegone to the cinema,watched anything Iwanted. Ventured out,carrying only a fluttering£20 note in my hand. (No wipes, no emergency raisins, no changing bag).Read a ruddy book while drifting in and out of sleep.
These are the important jobs to do in the next five weeks, while you stillhave the chance. (Yes, I know your eight-month pregnant wife might havesomething to say about some of these suggestions, but this isn’t a rational,selfless list; this is from the heart.)
Apart from the herb garden, I also mistakenly prioritised getting a smalllow wall built at the front of our garden, and adding a sink in the downstairsloo. Both kind-of useful but I’d have been better off having a leisurely mealwith my partner without having to field questions about Harry Potter, orreading something that won The Booker rather than something involving flapshiding animals.
When I told my wife this was my theme, she started chipping in with loadsof ideas. When it comes to ‘Things to do if you weren’t a parent’ she’s playedher joker. Her suggestions? Go to a park, shout out to all the bored lookingparents “I’m going to the pub” and then run away. Go to a farm and not haveto mimic every animal or point out every tractor. Or just not go to a farm.Enjoy your whole day without having to wipe someone else’s bum. Have oneof your rooms monochrome (because you can.)
I could go on, but the editor says I have to keep it to 450 words. Anyway,I’ve got to go outside and pick some rosemary. I say ‘outside’. It’s soovergrown through lack of care, it’s nudging up against the back window.
T he internet has told me to drink baking soda so I have. I wonder whatelse I would do if the internet told me to do it. I can hear my mum saying“Would you jump off a cliff if Google told you to?” No, I wouldn’t do that,
but I am willing to glug a bitter drink to make my face look less swollen. Yes, I’m still having allergy reactions. While conferring with Dr Google (he
tells me he is not a doctor and any advice he passes onto me is not his ownopinion nor is he responsible for any of my own actions after the passing onof information that he has sourced...) I’m led to a website that advises bakingsoda can help alleviate the symptoms of allergy symptoms from foodallergies, especially with chemical intolerances like I have.
After many weeks of avoiding wheat, dairy, tomatoes, chilli, potatoes, (I’m half irish, I can handle the rest; but potatoes!?!) I finally realise that ithas been the ‘natural’ food colouring in my dairy free margarine – E160a –Annatto. Think I have finally sussed it! Last night I devoured my long lostlove – a simple ham sandwich (gluten free over-priced roll and dairy freeannatto free spread) Oh, how wonderful it was to eat something normal like aham sandwich! I’ve been a rice-eating rake for weeks. I’ve lost weight justbecause I can’t be bothered to wash a pan up to boil rice that often... And I’mtoo vain, it seems, to start eating normal food again, in case my face swellsout again like elephant lady.
Elephants are good in storybooks, but no-one wants anelephant for a mum. My eyelidstriple in size and I look like acocky wannabe wearingmassive sunglasses on a darkrainy morning on the schoolrun. Little do they know I amhiding the beast face... Theantihistamines don’t work toreduce the swelling, but theyare an excellent cure for beingawake and focused during theday...The other day I fell asleepdreaming the doorbell wasringing, I was pinned to the bedunable to move. That’sprescription antihistamines.You fall asleep and dreamabout being asleep.
This means my flatconstantly resembles a scenefrom a burglary where theburglar had a few days to lookfor the hidden family jewels.Everything is pulled out and strewn everywhere. I can just about musterenough energy to put my sunglasses on for the school run and google‘blummin allergy’. So today when googling medical help (I’ve found the NHS limited for food intolerances help.) I found a site suggesting I drinkbicarbonate of soda to alkalize my body. I wonder what I will do next? Don’t worry, I won’t jump off that cliff if it tells me too... But I might fall off if Iam taking antihistamines and operating machinery!
