The Landlady Building Opinions

I t has been a very busy week at Landlady Towers. For a start, The SmallDaughter started secondary school, which now involves me getting up anhour earlier than I have done for the last ten years in order to furnish her

with boiled eggs, soldiers and hot tea prior to her long bus journey to school.It is now Wednesday and I am absolutely exhausted as, in preparation for myforthcoming holiday to Ibiza, I ‘practised’ going out over the weekend andmanaged to go to bed at 5.30am and 7am respectively on Friday andSaturday. I now feel like a distant relative of Count Dracula and am dying foran early night.

I also have a New Boyfriend here in Brighton, which has put something of aspanner in the works with what has been going on in Cuba. I was supposed tobe going back to Cuba in October, but have had to postpone my trip until nextyear, which has upset quite a few people on the other side of the pond, yetmade The New Boyfriend here very happy. It is true that you cannot please allthe people all of the time, especially in matters concerning the heart, where itseems to me that you can and should please one person at a time.

It has to be said that The New Boyfriend does not help with the lack ofsleep, as an early night for him is equal to something approximating 2am,which is definitely the middle of the night for me. We are slowly narrowingthe gaping abyss between our respective bedtimes, but I fear I might be inmy coffin – Dracula style in fact – before the matter is fully resolved.

To make matters worse, it is that time of year when I have a changeover of student lodgers and leap from Summer Students to the more permanentWinter ones, who appear from all over the globe with just about everything but the kitchen sink in their copious amounts of luggage. Fortunately, I had a couple of days grace after coming back from Portugal which enabled me topaint and polish both of my letting rooms to perfection. One of my new Frenchgirls moved in today and she and her mother have been going up and down thestairs moving her belongings in for the past twohours. The room is so tiny, I fear that inorder to fit everything in, she will beaiming for a new world recordin space management in the style of ‘how manyelephantscan you fit intoa Mini?’

With all thisactivity and solittle sleep, I amglad that I’m soongoing on holiday toIbiza, which is just thelocation to get loads of rest and relaxation.Yeah, right. follow me on twitter @robert_nemeth

Memory Day onSaturday 29September will

see artefacts, newspaperclippings, photographs and,indeed, memories collectedfrom local residents tocelebrate the history of The Level in Brighton, which is soon to undergo amajor renovation.

My own memories of TheLevel, as a student livingjust off Elm Grove, were notentirely positive. I wouldoften walk across this grimpublic space on my way intotown and generally found itto be unwelcoming andgrimy. The dark tree-linedborder with the Lewes Roadseemed particularly unsafeand nothing like the grand continentalboulevard that it could be with the right lighting.That was twelve years ago and little haschanged. A refurbishment is well overdue.

If all goes to plan, work will start in October ona grand project that will involve both restoringand remodelling. I particularly like the idea of thereintroduction of symmetry to the southernareas of the park, and the rejuvenation of theRose Walk. Best of all appears to be aninnovative water feature within the children’sarea that will use both the original boating lake and its two bridges for anentirely new purpose. The list of improvements is long and is available forperusal at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/thelevel.

The project has not been without hiccups along the way. Planning permissionwas granted to move the skate park into the centre of the Level but the idea wasopposed by thousands of residents for quite sound reasons. A gorgeous skatepark is proposed though, which I hope to review once its concrete has set.

Cricket is often mentioned in the history of the Level and it is said to havebeen played there since the middle of the 18th century. The Level was formallylaid out in 1822 by Amon Henry Wilds (architect of Park Crescent and HanoverCrescent nearby, along with many other famous local compositions) and HenryPhillips (the renowned landscape gardener). Some of Brighton’s oldest residentsmay remember the boating lake being constructed in 1927.

Whilst it is unlikely that many will recall that year, others will certainly haveall kinds of other memories of The Level or items of memorabilia that those witha passion for the area would find fascinating. Please do share them.

Distracted Dad Mama MaloneRichard Hearn is killing time in the Booth Museum

L et’s spend some time in my favouriteBrighton museum, the Booth Museum ofNatural History on Dyke Road. I never

tire of its calm weirdness and evocativeeccentricity. Yes, you have to make it pasttheir anti-pushchair steps, and a big bear thatserves as a taxidermist’s version of a bouncerto a nervous child, but if your kids are stillkeen, you’re in for a treat.

I have written about The Booth Museumbefore in this column, just google the phrase“Richard Hearn stiff squirrel human skull” andit should either come top of the list, or you’llget arrested. (I’ve just realised, with myknowledge of Search Engine Optimisation, thatwhen this one goes online, it’ll supercede it.)

Since last time, The Boy’s knowledge andinterest in nature has shot through the roof;I’m saying “look, an owl!” to Youngest™whereas The Boy is informing him that it’s “aEuropean Eagle Owl” in a world-wearymanner, like a concert pianist asked to play‘Happy Birthday’.

The next section includes a turntable whereyou choose some exhibit to put under amicroscope. (Think of it as a kind of LazySusan where nothing is edible.) There is anempty place where you can choose to put yourown item. It’s going to be a coin, isn’t it?Youngest™ is surprised but The Boy guessesstraight away. “I’ll do something different,” Isay, getting my keys out, just as The Boy says,“Is it going to be your keys?”

This room leads through to the beautiful andobsessive butterfly and moth area. Lit, pinnedand labelled in neat rows, I find them strangelycalming; I’m not sure whether this puts mecloser to Damian Hirst or Hannibal Lecter.Luckily, the atmosphere is broken by The Boynominating his various favourites andYoungest™ – not wanting to be left out – shouting out “And mine!” after everyone of his brother’s choices.

In the skeleton section, I try and take a photo of The Boy and Youngest™ infront of the horse, but they both decided to make clippety clop noises andhorse movements which I felt was in poor taste. Back towards the front, andYoungest™ points to the lion’s head. “That’s scary!” he says, and then to thezebra, “That’s not scary”. It gets me thinking: why is that? Is it the stripes insome way?

I’m thinking idly that a good tip for serial killers such as Hannibal Lecterwould be to dress in stripes to appear more friendly, and then I realise thatthe moment I start thinking idly about giving tips to serial killers is a goodtime to call it a day.

A pparently I’m turning 40 in four months. My mother must have got thedate wrong, after all she was a hippie. I can’t be 40! Yesterday, a littlefive-year-old girl we’ve known for years, referred to me as “a sort of

teenage mum who’s nice to children.” The best compliment ever! Mainly thatshe considers me kind. But teenage? Amazing.

For me, the end of the world really is coming December 2012. There can’tbe life after 40 right? I imagine the clock will strike and I will just sit down,slumped, never to stand again. Sure, age is just a number, but I don’tremember anyone ever saying “that 40-year-old is pretty.” I’ve become thekind of idiot I usually condemn who now shallowly wants to be pretty. Irealise I will find ageing hard if I value being ‘pretty’. But I didn’t value lookswhen I was young, I was a tomboy til I was about 25. I rejected make up andskirts til I was in my 30s. I enjoyed the strength baggy clothes and trainersgave me. I liked knowing I could always run anywhere.

Perhaps this came from beingbullied at school, every day I didn’tknow if I was going to have to fight theboys. (The girls left me alone but theboys picked on me daily.) I guessthat’s why I never wore clothes thatattracted any boy attention! Everysingle day of my life I wore trainers Icould run fast in. Every single day, allday long, I was bullied and threatened.When I finally left, after three years of it, my teacher said, “I don’t know howshe put up with it for so long.” So she had noticed the bullying, but had saidnothing! Quite a different tack from today’s anti-bullying strategies.Sometimes they did what they threatened and I had to fight to protectmyself; they were big lads (one of them was 6ft at 12 years old!). Clotheswere important, I always wore trousers in case I needed to kick. Isn’t thatterrible for an 11-year-old girl?

I worry about my child having to deal with baddies, but I guess all you cando is give children the self-worth to deal with people in a strong, smart way.And good trainers. So for me, wearing mini skirts and lipstick is still fun, I’mstill exploring what it is to be a woman and what ‘attractiveness’ is. I don’twant to stop being a sexy female because I’ve turned a certain age. Do Iabsolutely have to? How about I promise just to never wear denim hot pants?At least I’ve come up with the title for my book: ‘How To Age Gracefully’.

I t’s nearly ten years since I first met the team at Soundhouse and wroteabout them. Back then they were pretty new to the scene here in Brightonand Hove but they were already gathering a following of fans. I remember

clearly interviewing some of their very happy clients and how they waxedlyrical about the work, the attitude, the manners and the cleanliness of theSoundhouse team. It almost became a joke, were they simply great builderscreating great loft conversions and extensions – or were they lifestyle gurus,coaching families into a peaceful way of living with their penchant for greentea and classical music on the radio?

The truth was clear to see in the quality of the work they were doing, andthe happiness they spread followed on. So much so that ten years down theline some of those original clients have moved homes and commissionednew work from Soundhouse. The work ethic they employ is second to none.Every client I have met, and I have met many, will give you the same story.Soundhouse are clean, Soundhouse are efficient, Soundhouse will offer goodadvice and Soundhouse will also listen to what you want and do their verybest to meet your demands – and all for a budget you have agreed inadvance. In fact, head man Nick is likely to say that in a Soundhouse quote itis easier to write down what is not included in the price than what is.

One of the things Soundhouse have built a great name for is handling a jobfrom start to finish, from design and architects’ drawings through planning,building regulations, build and finish. They can and do genuinely take thepressure off you, the client. They also have great design ideas that they will applyto your build where appropriate; ways of saving space, creating space even;innovative concepts; a keen eye for new materials and products and a deepsense of practicality. For them, design and function have to go hand in hand.

They continue to apply a green attitude to the way they work, seldom usingskips or wantonly sending things to landfill when they can be re-used orrecycled, and they clean as they go, never leaving a mess at the end of the day.

This time round I visited two homes where Soundhouse projects are comingto completion. The first is a fabulous extension to a 1930s detached home inHove Park. From the front it retains all of the period detail that makes it sospecial, and inside, in the front rooms, that detail continues: oak panelling,stained glass...but when you pass through to the rear of the property you seeboth the scale and the quality of the project. Several smaller rooms have beenknocked into one and the whole has been extended behind a sweeping wall ofglass seven metres wide that folds back and opens onto the mature garden.There are four clear areas of activity: a family dining area, a rather granderdining space, a super kitchen and a relaxing TV lounge with wood burningstove. There are elements of old and new, sleek modernity with retro stylingand furnishing. Owner Jacqui is delighted with the result; more than satisfiedwith Soundhouse, and for a second time, as this is a repeat client.

The second home I visit is a largeVictorian villa where owner Vicki isbusily running two businesseswhile looking after a young familyand dealing with major buildingworks. Vicki is delighted with herextensive loft conversion.Soundhouse have not onlydelivered what they asked for butmore, by changing a hip roof into agable end and creating more roomthan they could hope for. “Whilstthey worked I was amazed by thequality and detail of the work, somuch so that it was sad to see theincredible timber work covered up.They also accommodated my loveof old things; a vintage bath,reclaimed doors, antique tiles –and also our desire for timber

framed sash windows. The work isalmost finished now and I can’timagine what it will be like to nothave the team here. Each one ofthem is a craftsman of the highestcalibre and the transition from ourold house to our new extension is seamless.”

Given the accolades, the successstories and repeat customers onemight expect that Soundhousewould have expanded and taken onmore work. But that hasn’thappened and it seems it never will.Nick is quite clear on that: “I like theway we work, the close knit team ofprofessionals that we have aroundus and the fact that I can begenuinely involved in all of theprojects we take on. If we were toexpand I could not guarantee thatlevel of attention, nor could Iguarantee that I could find buildingprofessionals that share myenthusiasm for doing a job properly.

“We like to be able to offer thesame quality of Service to each andevery client and by staying smallwe can do that. I have also kept thisas a pretty tight ship. We have nohigh street office or sign writtenvans and by keeping our overheadslow, but always employing realcraftsmen, I know we can offerquality work at a sensible price. Iknow we will never be the cheapestfirm doing the kind of work that wedo, but I am confident we are notthe most expensive and that wedeliver a job that in terms of qualityis up there with the highest priced ifnot better. The number of peoplethat come to us time and time againis testament to that.

“Word of mouth and carefulmarketing have kept us busy for tenyears and we can see no end to thatdemand. Property expansions are agreat and affordable alternative tomoving, and with moving costsalone coming in at around £25,000,an extension is a very competitivealternative – plus, you keep yourneighbours, local schools andamenities – if you’re happy whereyou live, why move? Expand.”

Nick and the team are clearly notin the business of cheap ‘quickfixes’, the work they do looks goodand lasts. He and his team are ahappy bunch with few changes overthe ten years they have workedtogether. Nick continues to drive hisvintage VW truck for business andhe claims it is his therapy too,tinkering with it whenever he has amoment. He also continues to seaswim, completing his Alcatraz swimfor charity and planning anotheralready.
