Proper Planning for Laundry Chutes

• Laundry Chute Sizes – typically 24” in diameter, but larger 30” are also common and have many advantages over the smaller chutes.

• Fire rating – the International Building Code specifies that the chute itself be installed/enclosed in fire-rated chase. The chase needs to be continuous to maintain the fire-rating. You will need either 1 hour or 2 hour fire-rating depending on your building stories. Your building architect should account for this fire rating compliance in your building plans.

Proper Planning for Laundry Chutes

• Laundry chute intake doors come with either a left or right hand hinge. You will want to decide which is more suitable by examining the location of the chute in the room.

• It is a must that Chutes are installed prior to drywall finishing.

Ideally, the chute will be installed with only 2 walls of your chase framed in. Often times there are 3 chase walls framed and your chute installer can advise you on the best installation practices.
