Healthcare Occupations

Certified Electronic Health Records Technician NEW!This certification is a great career option for those who want to join the healthcare industry but prefer no hands-on care. Employment for those with experience using Electronic Health Records is expected to increase by 20 percent, much faster than the average for all occupations through 2018. This course will teach the administrative skills needed to work in the front office of a medical facility, in addition to how to assemble patients’ health information including medical history, symptoms, examination results, diagnostic tests, treatment methods, and all other healthcare provider services. Course includes management of electronic health records software, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health data requirements and standards, clinical classification and coding systems, data analysis, healthcare reimbursement methods, HIPPAA and quality improvement methods. The program contains a non-paid work-based component, as well as a healthcare provider CPR certification. Students will take NHA’s Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist exam at the end of the class. High school diploma or GED required. Testing fees are included in tuition. Books extra. Dental Assisting/RadiographyThis program prepares students for a chair-side position in a dental office. The course introduces dental anatomy, terminology, dental specialties, chair-side assisting, laboratory procedures, infection control, sterilization procedures, dental instruments and mixing dental materials. The course also offers a 7-hour initial training course for a Dental Assistant Radiographer. This is the first step to obtaining a Dental Assistant Radiographer’s certificate in Ohio. BLS Healthcare provider CPR and First Aid and Safety included. Books extra. Must have the Hepatitis B vaccination series started. Class size limitedto 20 students.

Healthcare OccupationsMedical Coding and BillingThis course is an introduction to medical coding and billing. Students will learn how to complete and submit the varied claims required in the medical field. You will learn to use the ICD-9 CM, CPT-4 and HCPCS. In addition a variety of payment systems are presented: DRG, RUGSIII and APC. Prerequisite: Medical Terminology.

Advanced Medical CodingThis course is designed for students who already have knowledge of coding but want to take it to the next step. Students will embark on a comprehensive study of the principles of medical coding and billing management. Advanced EMT Procedures New rules and protocols may require you to assist more highly trained EMS personnel in the administration of advanced life support procedures. New skills can enhance your capability as an EMT and a “team player”. The most common are: assisting with or intubating, applying ECG electrodes, assisting with IV fluid therapy and assisting with the application of CPAP.

Emergency Medical Technicians/Ambulance EMT-BThis course is required for certification as an EMT-B in the State of Ohio. The curriculum is designed to prepare an individual to serve on ambulance services and fire departments. The 130-hour course includes clinical experience at local hospitals and ambulance services. Prerequisites: 18 years of age, high school diploma or GED, driver’s license and not been convicted of, plead guilty to or had judicial finding of guilty to crimes listed in OAC 4765-8-01. Course covers reflexology theory, history, zone therapy, sense of touch, techniques and applications, confidentiality, safety and sanitation, anatomy and physiology, table of disorders, essential oils, and exam prep. Online ClassesOur online instructor-led courses are open to everyone! We offer over 300 classes under the following course departments:

How to get started:1. Visit our Online Instruction Center at www.ed2go.com/lcjvsae2. Click the Courses link. Once you choose the department and course title you are

interested in, select the Enroll Now button. Follow the instructions to enroll for your class. You will choose a username and password that will grant you access to the classroom.

Financial AidFinancial Aid may be available to help pay tuition and other education expenses. Each funding source has different eligibility requirements. Call today for an appointment!

Pell GrantsMany of our students have tuition and books paid for through some type of financial aid. Programs of 600 hours or more are Pell Grant eligible. What is a Pell Grant? It is a federal grant that provides money to individuals to assist with expenses. It does NOT have to be repaid. Who is eligible? Grants are based on income, family size, etc. and have various guidelines. Listed below are examples of aid students in the Medical Assisting Program received. Students enrolled in programs that are fewer than 900 hours have pro-rated grants.

Family Size: 4Family Income: $35,000Pell Grant: $1,245

Family Size: 3Family Income: $18,000Pell Grant: $1,405

Family Size: 5Family Income: $45,000Pell Grant: $1,195

THESE ARE ONLY ESTIMATES OF AWARDSHow do I apply for the Pell Grant? Complete the free form. We will be glad to assist you in completing it. You will need your Federal Income Tax Return or income information from 2009. Call for an appointment.

Other Financial AssistanceYou may qualify for a variety of tuition assistance programs offered through the Employment netWork and its partners. The Employment netWork provides services for job seekers, workers and employers in the community. Many programs are eligible for ITA Grants. For more information, call the Employment netWork at 440.324.5244.

Payment PlansFor the student’s convenience, payment plan arrangements may be made by speaking with an Adult Career Center Secretary. A valid VISA, MasterCard or Discover must be presented. The deposit for the class is required for registration. The first payment is due prior to the first class meeting. The refund policy remains in effect for payment plan students. For students not choosing a payment plan, classes are to be paid in full prior to the first meeting of class.

SHORT-TERM PROGRAMS: 119 – 299 hours.Students must pay $100 at the time of registration with the balance divided into two installments. A valid VISA, MasterCard or Discover is required.

MID-TERM PROGRAMS: 300 – 599 hours.Students must pay $100 at the time of registration with the balance divided into four installments. A valid VISA, MasterCard or Discover is required.

LONG-TERM PROGRAMS: 600+ hours.Students not applying for the Pell Grant must pay $100 at the time of registration with the balance divided into seven installments throughout the year with the first payment being made prior to the start of class. A valid VISA, MasterCard or Discover is required. By signing the payment plan agreement, the student is obligated to make payments as scheduled. Students who withdraw are subject to Lorain County JVS Adult Career Center Withdrawal/Refund policy. Payment is required in full for any withdrawals after the refund period. Students receiving a partial Pell Grant will need to make payment arrangements for the tuition balance at the time the grant is determined.

Certificates of CompletionA certificate of completion will be awarded to each student who has attended 90% of scheduled classes and has satisfactorily completed the required work for the course.

Textbooks, Fees and SuppliesTextbooks and supplies are not included in course fees. Books will be purchased as a group the first night of class. Bookstore hours begin in August (M – Th, 4 – 8 PM). Students must provide their own hand tools when necessary.

AccreditationLorain County JVS Adult Career Center is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement. All teachers are qualified practitioners in their area of instruction and are certified by the Ohio Department of Education.

Cancelled ClassesThe Adult Career Center will cancel courses that do not attain the required minimum enrollment. The Center reserves the right to cancel, postpone or combine courses before or at the first class meeting. Attempts are made to contact all students whose courses have been cancelled. In the event a class is cancelled, a full refund will be given. Arrangements may be made to transfer to another course by contacting the Adult Career Center Office.

School ClosingsIf the high school sessions are cancelled at the Lorain County JVS, the Adult Career Center classes will also be cancelled. Listen to the local radio stations WEOL 930 AM and WOBL 1320 AM for closing announcements.

Child CareThe Lorain County JVS Adult Career Center is working with The Child Garden of Oberlin (located across the street on RT 58, next to Great Cuts) to offer evening child care. The Child Garden requires a minimum of 8 students enrolled in order to offer child care during evening hours. The Child Garden accepts ODJFS vouchers. Child registration fee waived for all JVS students and employees. Contact The Child Garden - Oberlin at 440.775.7057.

Withdrawals and RefundsIf a student finds it necessary to withdraw from a course, the student must contact the Adult Career Center to begin the refund process. Students receiving a Pell Grant must follow the federal refund policy. A $10 ADMINISTRATIVE FEE IS NON-REFUNDABLE, REGARDLESS OF WHEN YOU WITHDRAW FROM ANY CLASS. The refund policy is as follows after the $10 fee has been deducted. All programs: 100% refund prior to first class meeting.

Programs 600 hours or more:90% refund during the first week of class.80% refund during the second week of class. 70% refund during the third week of class. 0% refund during the fourth week of class. If a balance remains, the student is required to pay in full. Pell Grants only cover the % of class hours attended. A student withdrawing is responsible for the difference between the withdrawal policy and the Pell payment.

Programs of 119 – 599 hours:90% refund during the first week of class.75% refund during the second week of class. NO refunds after the second week of class. If a balance remains, the student is required to pay in full.

Programs of 20 – 118 hours:90% refund prior to third class meeting.NO refunds after start of third class. If a balance remains, the student is required to pay in full.

Programs of 5 – 19 hours50% refund prior to the second class meeting. NO refund will be issued after start of second class. If a balance remains, the student is required to pay in full. Programs of 4 or fewer hours: no refund after start of class.

PLEASE ALLOW FOUR WEEKS FOR REFUNDS TO BE PROCESSED.

Privacy NotificationThe Privacy Act of 1974 does not permit the Lorain County JVS Adult Career Center to share information regarding a student’s grades, attendance or other issues except with prior written permission.

Career Development ProgramsSome career development programs are Pell Grant or ITA (Individual Training Accounts through the Employment Network) eligible and require a high school diploma or GED. Some safety-sensitive education programs may require drug testing and/or background checks prior to admission. Career Development Programs include placement assistance and employability skills training. Books and tools are extra.

Employment OpportunitiesThe Career Services Office serves as a liaison between students and the employment community. An ongoing database of available employment opportunities is maintained and made available to job seekers. Job seekers are directed to potential employment opportunities based on their skills, training and experience.
