F irst, that family andfriends are moreimportant than ever.We have heard too

many stories of isolated seniorswho have suffered terribly fromconfine ment. Alternativecohabitation options must befound in order to build a supportnetwork around the mostvulnerable. Second, we havetamed techno logy at all costs.Even the “technonoodles” wereno exception. Bring on the Zoommeetings and videoconferencingevents. Finally, that medicine iscapable of great things. It wastouching and reassuring to seethe scientific community workingtogether to do some prettyamazing things.

Once again, as of this writing, the future is uncertain. Brightercertainly, but who knows whatFall has in store for us.

Luckily, we soaked up the sunand had some fun outdoorsthis summer. All of our walkshave been a great success, whether in the parks or indiscovery of our beautiful city. You also enjoyed our golftournaments and our urbanoutings. Our photographersChloé Charbonnier and OscarAguirre were present at someof these outings. Check out ourFacebook page (FADOQMontréal)and our website to see theresults of their work.

For the start of the newprogramming season, we are offering you a variety of activities. The computerworkshops are resuming. Andwe very much hope to be able

to present the dinner-show on October 1st as well as theplay on family caregivers onOctober 22nd.

You will also find in thisnewsletter two articles onseniors from cultural com -munities. As you can imagine, the language barrier canaccentuate feelings of isolationfor seniors who are not fluentin French. Ms. Louise Buzit-Beaulieu tells us about initia -tives to counter mis treatmentof English-speaking seniors andthose from cultural communi -ties. While Ms. Melba AlciraPalacio Rodriguez presents uswith activities organized forSpanish-speaking seniors.

A good start to the newprogramming season!

Your president, Jocelyne Wiseman

One of them is called “Montoit, mon droit” (My Roof, myright). It highlights thesituation of a 75-year-oldsenior, living in her home for17 years, whom the landlordwants to evict to rent to ayounger person at a muchhigher price.

The second play is titled“Celle qu’on ne voit plus”(The one we no longer see). It illustrates the situation of asenior with cognitive lossesresiding in a CHSLD. Thisperson is watching herfavorite soap opera and anattendant shows up in theroom, snatches the remoteout of her hand to watch thehockey game, and anotherattendant arrives anddemonstrates grossdisrespect and neglect.

The third play is “Quandl’amour fait mal” (When LoveHurts). It shows us the situa -tion of an elderly person whois financially and psycholo gi -cally abused by her daughterwho has substance abuseproblems. The senior talks to her friends and solutionsemerge.

During the past year, we alsocontinued training commu -nity workers with regards tothe mistreatment of peoplewith cognitive disorders. Inaddition, during the winterand spring of 2021, confe -rences on fraud and financialabuse (powers of attorney)were offered in French andEnglish. In the fall of 2021,these lectures will be offeredin Italian and Spanish. It isimportant to note that we are

Living the experience of learningFrench myself has inspired meto help others in learning thislanguage. So I set out to offer, at my home, a meeting place forSpanish-speaking seniors, inparticular from St-Léonard,Rosemont, Anjou and Rivière-des-Prairies. Thanks to theLouise de Marillac Foundation, I have created a range ofactivities and services to enable them to learn French;among others:

n

Coffee get-togethers: a meetingplace to forge bonds of friend -ship and respect.

n

Hands in action: craftingactivities using recycledmaterials

n

Technology brings us closer: useof the computer as a means ofcommunication; very useful inthese pandemic times.

n

Workshops for aging well:understanding and adapting tothe changes of the third age.

n

Once upon a time: reading ofstories in French in which theheroes are represented byseniors.

n

Language workshops: learningsimple and practical words tocommunicate in French.

In addition to these activities, I help Spanish-speaking seniorsin different ways, includingaccompanying them to theirmedical appointments, offeringthem a translation service ormaking friendship visits topeople living alone in their home or in a seniors’ residence.

Spanish-speaking seniors may have difficulty makingthemselves understood whenhaving their medication orgroceries delivered. Others live in solitude, experiencingpsychological distress. Some are victims of violence. With the support of the Louise deMarillac Foundation, I was ableto denounce the cases ofaggression towards seniors that I witnessed.

A PRECIOUS GIFT TO OFFER TO SPANISH-SPEAKING SENIORS: TIME!

The language barrier is achallenge for Spanish-speakingimmigrants and even more sowhen it comes to seniors.

Several reasons explain theirdifficulty in mastering French. Many arrived in Canada withoutknowing how to read or write, without having had access toeducation in their country.Others had to work from themoment they arrived here inorder to support their families. Finally, some people, oftenwomen, stay at home to takecare of household chores.

The changing fortunes of theatre

venues in Montreal between

1825 and 1930

BAnQ CHRONICLE

By Danielle LégerLibrarian in charge of collections at the National Library | BAnQ

The history ofMontreal’s theatresfeatures a kaleidos -cope of changingfortunes, as well

as fascinating achievements. The city had not one, but fourThéâtre Royals! Its first realtheatre, the Théâtre Royal-Molson, on the site of the

current Marché Bonsecours, was the hub of cultural lifebetween 1825 and 1844.The oldest theatre still in useis the Gesù, on De BleuryStreet, which also witnessedthe heyday of college theatre, starting in 1865. The nexttime you pass by the Théâtredu Nouveau Monde, think of

the Gayety, Radio City andComédie-Canadienne, eachof which succeeded the nexton the same spot.

Like the Théâtre Bijou, several of the theatres wereshort-lived. In 1878, thedowntown Crystal Palacewas dismantled and rebuilton the grounds of theProvincial Exhibition, at thefoot of Mount Royal. Between1895 and 1963, the ThéâtreFrançais on Sainte-CatherineStreet (now MTELUS) — Frenchonly in name — was mainlydedicated to English-languageproductions. As for theQueen’s Theatre, it offer edup a striking unsche duledperformance one evening inSeptember 1899: the buildingcollapsed with a bang.

In this photograph takenaround 1890, a streetcarpasses in front of Montreal’sfourth Théâtre Royal, locatedon Côté Street, where thePalais des congrès nowstands. Albums de ruesÉdouard-Zotique Massicotte,BAnQ collections.

Other vanished downtownlandmarks include theAcademy of Music, thePrincess and its neighbouracross the street, theOrpheum. In the early 1910s,Montreal’s neighbourhoodscame alive with the openingof the popular Arcade (now atelevision studio), thepleasant Chanteclerc (nowthe Rideau Vert) and the chicFamily (now the Corona).Theatre was also performedin amusement parks: theGuilbault Gardens, SohmerPark, and Dominion Park.

Social issues echoed throughthese emblematicinstitutions. In 1900, theNational Theatre became thefirst professional French-language theatre on thecontinent. Her Majesty’s

Theatre on Guy Streetresisted control by New Yorkentertainment magnates. TheSociété Saint-Jean-Baptisteturned to Yiddish theatregroups and the local Chinese,Irish and Italian communitiesto keep the MonumentNational afloat. In 1918, theSpanish flu epidemic forcedmany theatres to close. Acentury later, there isconcern about the resilienceof cultural venues: will theyall reopen when thepandemic is over? As thisstory unfolds ... so do ourhearts.
