President’s Message

The IIT Bombay Heritage Fund has come a long way since it was founded back in July 1996 to fund and promote education and research among students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Thanks to your generosity as donors, IITBHF has raised over $24 million over the years to support IIT Bombay’s “Tryst with Excellence”.

IITBHF has funded many important and impactful projects at IIT Bombay over the years. Please visit the alumni website at http://www.iitbombay.org to learn more about how alumni contributions are being put to effective use. IIT Bombay was ranked #1 in India and #30 in the world in the U.S. News & World Report’s World’s Best Engineering and IT Universities rankings. And in recent years, an impressive 2/3rd of the top 100 JEE rankers, considered the elite group among engineering aspirants around the country, have been selecting IIT Bombay over any other IIT campus. IIT Bombay continues to be a leader in research and in collaborations with industry and academia, such as the MoU signed with Applied Materials which will give $1.5 million over the next three years for cutting-edge research in the area of semiconductor technology.

Major projects on campus supported by alumni contributions via IITBHF in the past year include the Victor Menezes Convention Center, Syntel Gymnasium, and Wadhwani Research Center for BioScience and BioEngineering. IITBHF also provided funds for many other important initiatives including named scholarships, Research and Teaching Excellence awards, Student Merit Excellence Awards, Chair Professorships, Faculty Development Fund and the Student Conference Travel Fund. The HATS (Hostel Alumni Stewardship) and YFA (Young Faculty Award) programs have been very popular with alumni donors, and they are making a big impact on hostels and in recruiting top notch faculty.

However, our alma mater is also facing many new challenges in its efforts to maintain high standards of excellence. In the next 3 to 5 years, the student population will go from 3,800 to over 8,000. At the same time, the faculty strength will have to grow from 450 to over 800. This explosive growth means that new infrastructure is needed including hostels, departments, lecture halls, faculty housing, etc. Likewise, recruiting new faculty members is becoming difficult making it important to support initiatives such as the Young Faculty Award program.

At a challenging time like this, it is imperative that we, the alumni, help our alma mater in every way we can … through monetary contributions, personal time, access to our contacts, etc. Alumni support is critical in fulfilling IIT Bombay’s vision of being amongst the top ranks of technical universities, known for its outstanding undergraduate programs and for its contributions to research.

Please join your fellow alumni in building a global network of IIT Bombay alumni, students, and faculty by participating regularly in IITBHF activities. Not only will you help your alma mater, but you will also help your own career and business prospects while renewing old friendships and making new ones.

Hostel Alumni Team Stewardship (HATS) is an alumnus driven initiative that enables IIT Bombay alumni to reconnect with the Institute via their old hostel by

· Helping the mess workers· Improving hostel facilities· Organizing annual re-unions for hostel alumni· Engaging hostel students with an aim that they become future model alumni.

A program “Make Hostel My Home” has been launched where elected student body would conduct periodic audits of the hostel facilities to develop an actionable correction plan and post photos on the web for full visibility. H7 and H4 alumni are also piloting a project called STARS,-Student Achievement in Research & Scholarship, a program that enables an alumnus to assist/support a team of high achieving student and his research / project advisor. Find out more about HATs by visiting:- http://www.iitbombay.org/initiatives/hats/Home

Young Faculty Awards (YFA) is another alumnus driven initiative that attracts top-notch young faculty to IIT Bombay and helps in supporting IIT Bombay’s “Tryst with Excellence” and continued global technological leadership. As IIT Bombay enters a rapid growth phase, it is expected to reach a maximum capacity of 8000 students by 2014. YFA will help in ensuring that there are enough faculty members to maintain a healthy student-teacher ratio. The program was launched as the Legacy project of the Class of ’82 which collected pledges to the tune of USD 1 million (realized~ USD 600K). Class of ’83 and ’84 have also decided to contribute to this project and it is hoped that other batches and individuals too will join this. Program implementation is carried out by IITB in close consultation with LAC (Legacy Advisory Committee) comprising of alumni. So far YFA has helped recruit 59 new faculty members across departments and specializations. To find out more about these faculty members log on to http://www.iitbombay.org/initiatives/young-faculty-award/list-of-yfa-awardees

Faculty Alumni Network (FAN)The Faculty Alumni Network is a coalition of IIT-B alumni with backgrounds as university faculty, researchers at public/private institutions, and administrators, committed to helping IIT-B become a world-class research and teaching center. FAN members promote the IIT-B cause through initiatives such as:· Collaborating with IIT-B faculty and students on research

programs· Promoting institutional connections between IIT-B and

universities abroad· Helping IIT-B with faculty recruitment, information

dissemination, and interviews· Hosting IIT-B faculty on sabbaticals & visits; mentoring IIT-B graduate & undergraduate students· Serving in advisory capacities to IIT-B units, as well as to its leadership

FAN members have hosted IIT-B faculty during sabbaticals in the USA. IIT-B’s Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management has now become the leading partner in India for UCLA’s Business and Information Technologies Global Project, which has 20 partners in 16 countries. Other FAN efforts have led to seed funds for fourteen joint projects between faculty at Washington University in St. Louis and IIT-B, from the McDonnell International Scholars Academy and the McDonnell Academy Global Energy and Environmental Partnership. Senior academic administrators on the FAN team have provided guidance on models and best practices used in leading US universities, and helped establish parallels for governance, faculty development, and R&D at IIT-B.

Collaboration Between IIT Bombay and IndustriesOne of the most active academia-industry collaborations currently going on at IIT Bombay is that with Applied Materials Inc. The research collaboration between the two institutions has existed since 2005 and has been a comprehensive one, involving:

Sponsored research projects – projects in the area of advanced semiconductor devices, energy generation and energy storage are ongoing with faculty members from the Dept. of Chemistry, Dept. of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, Dept of Electrical Engineering Dept of Energy Sciences and Engineering for the past 5 years

Infrastructure development – Applied Materials donated state of the art semiconductor manufacturing equipment (market value $7.5 M) in 2007, to form the Applied Materials Nanofabrication Laboratory at IITB. MoU’s have since been signed to expand this collaboration in the area of renewable energy by setting up a wet chemistry lab and equipment donation towards proposed National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education, planned to be set up at IIT Bombay.

Researcher Exchange - IIT and Applied Materials have supported faculty members and students visiting the company’s Santa Clara campus, as well as AMAT engineers visiting IITB, for short durations of a week to extended periods of several months.

The funding from AMAT to IITB in support of these various initiatives has been about half a million dollars per year for the past five years. The research collaborations have resulted in over 35 publications, including 25 jointly published by IITB and AMAT researchers in leading journals and conferences. In addition to these research collaborations, AMAT has also been a sponsor or co-sponsor for several conferences and student events at IITB like Techfest. Recently, AMAT has set up a solar powered LED lighting system along IITB’s main avenue between Main Building and the Arch as a statement of AMAT and IITB’s joint commitment to sustainable development.

This outstanding example of academia-industry collaboration has been made possible by a pro-active attitude from IITB, top management of AMAT, the outstanding contributions from IITB alumnus Pravin Narwankar, and timely help from IITBHF in facilitating the donations of equipment.
