Membership NewsThe past year since May 2015 has seen us welcome a number of new faces with seven full members

joining plus one junior member in the pipe band section. On the other hand we lost six members through retirement for various reasons plus health issues for one couple. As previously reported we also lost two Life Members, Arthur Hassell and Adelaide Lammie and they will be hard to replace. We currently have 114 adult members and two junior members.

139th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGOn Monday 9th May 2016

Mr Ferrier welcomed 25 Members (Including Council Members) to the meeting. Apologies were received from 11 Members.

Mr Ferrier said it had been a busy year, and thanked the Council, Pipers, Drummers, Dancers and Convenors for all their hard work and the membership for their support.

Secretary’s Report: - stated it had been a busy year, hosting the E M A S S, AGM in November 2015 and the Summer outing on 4th June 2016. The Summer Outing is a fun day for all the family with various events throughout the day. She hoped it would be as well supported by Leicester as it is by all the other counties. There had been a slight glitch with the E mail bulletins with emails being returned as undeliverable. Would members advise her if they did not receive their e mail bulletin or of any changes to email or home address. Mrs. Moyce and Mr. Harrison were thanked for all work on the Bulletin, and Mr. Gregory for his work on the new website. The membership and Council were thanked for their support.

Treasurers Report: - The results for the year show a surplus of £145 in 2014/2015, compared to £34 in 2013/14. All events this year resulted in a small surplus. The cash funds are in a healthy position. 2 shares were purchased from the RBWF 200 Club, (no return this year) The Mauchline Church restoration fund and Abbots Road South UR Church both received £100.00 as our charity donations.

Membership Report: The membership numbers are fairly steady. There are 114 Adult Members and 2 Junior members. We had welcomed seven new members; six members had resigned. Two members died Mr. Arthur Hassell and Mrs. Adelaide Lammie. The society has been saved both time and money thanks to members using e mail addresses for the Bulletin and paying the Annual subscriptions by Bankers’ standing order. Dr MacKay congratulated one of our Life members on reaching her centenary.

Charity Fund: Avenue Road school was nominated as a charity for this year. Further suggestions would be most welcome.

Election of Officers and Council Members.

Go on Flora you can do It !!Four female members of

the society gathered at a function held at the Y.M.C.A. hall, on the 21st January 1950 and on that occasion Flora (surname unknown) tried her skill at playing the bagpipes. In spite of being encouraged by those close by it would appear that this particular musical session was not being taken seriously as those present found the whole experience rather amusing.

On the extreme right is my late mother, Esme Hatfield but sadly I am unable to name the other two ladies either side of Flora. Perhaps someone can fill in the blanks for me?

The Haggis Supper and Presidents NightOn 19th March the Presidents Night and Haggis supper was held at Countesthorpe Village

Hall. It was pleasing to see so many attend. The evening started with Mr Carl Wilkinson greeting our guests from Bedfordshire, Corby,

Derby, Huntingdon & Peterborough, Northampton and Rushden. Mr C Wilkinson then piped in the President Murdo Ferrier and his Lady Mrs Gina Ferrier

President of East Midlands Association of Scottish Societies. After a few word of welcome from the President the evening got under way with the dance Highland welcome with nearly all up on the dance floor.

The evening continued with a variety of entertainment of Ceilidh and English dancing music provided by Mr Peter Scatterty, a song from Mrs Carmel Dorward, the pipes and drums of our Society and dancing display by the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society Leicester branch.

During the interval from all this enjoyment the guests had their fill of Haggis from Mogerlys of Dumfries, after it had been piped in, in the usual manner and addressed by Dr Hugh Mackay.

Catering was provided by Rival Catering, with a quiz to test the brains provided by Mr C Harrison. To ensure a smooth transition throughout the evening of the various entertainment the master of ceremonies were provide by Mr Brian Stevens and Dr Hugh Mackay.

Thanks were expressed to all those who had assisted in setting up the function and clearing up afterwards.

The evening concluded with Auld Lang Syne and wishing all a safe journey home.

Your Summer Recipe::-- KEEPING FISH SIMPLEServes 4:- Eggs are omitted from this carbonara recipe and just cream is used to bind the

Bacon, Parmesan and Leeks. Ingredients:-

4 x 175g (6oz) Sea Bass Fillets, Skin on, Salt and Pepper, Flour, for dusting, Olive Oil, for cooking, 2 Large Knobs of Butter, 6 Rashers of Streaky Bacon, (cut into thin strips). 3 Leeks, cut into thick slices, 150ml (5fl oz) Double or Whipped Cream, 2 Generous Tablespoons Grated Parmesan Cheese

Method:- Dry the Sea Bass on kitchen paper, season with

salt and pepper and lightly dust the skin with flour. Heat the olive oil in a non stick frying pan and add a large knob of butter. Once it begins to sizzle, place the fish in the pan skin-side down. The fish may need to be gently pressed down with a fish slice because the skin tightens in the heat, slightly curving the fillets. The sea bass will take 6-7 minutes to crisp and colour before turning it and removing from the heat. The residual heat in the pan will continue the cooking process.

While the fish is frying, heat a large saucepan on top of the stove and add the bacon. Fry for a few minutes until golden, the spoon the strips on to a plate and pour away the excess fat in the pan. Add the remaining butter and, once melted, stir in the leeks along with 3 tablespoons of water. Cover and allow the leeks to steam for a few minutes until tender.

Pour the cream over, simmering until lightly thickened, then spoon the Parmesan cheese and bacon through the sauce. The leeks are now ready to serve with the sea bass on top.

PS:- Salmon, Cod, Turbot, Tuna and John Dory will all very comfortably substitute for the Sea Bass. The leeks can also be cut into long strips resembling tagliatelle.

Problems with Bulletin Circulation

We experienced some minor problems when circulating the last issue of the Bulletin to our e-mail readers. Several bulletins were bounced back. Unfortunately, the message when they were bounced back were not always helpful, in that it did not tell us what the problem was or if the e mail address were incorrect.

Please would members let us know if they do not receive their e-mail copy of the bulletin. We can then find out why and correct the fault.

Would all members please notify us of any change of e mail address or any other changes in their contact details.

We would be most grateful for your co-operation. Many thanks. Gina Ferrier

Tribute to a Century Celebration

Mrs Phyllis Moyce (known as “Phyll” to her friends) with her two sons Colin & Graham, celebrating her 100th birthday on the 3rd February 2016, at a special family dinner which was held at the Belmont Hotel in Leicester on Saturday the 13th February 2016. It was a surprise as she was only expecting close family, but we were able to get 29 relations to join us, and we did have a lovely meal and a great time was had by all.

Phyllis has been a member of the Leicester Caledonian Society since 1951 and has held several positions, one being the President from 1998 – 2004, and presently continues to act as the editor of the Society’s bulletin which is produced by her elder son Colin.

She continues to remain active, living and looking after herself and is an avid crossword addict and also reads a lot. She continues to regale family members with her many memories which are interesting and entertaining to listen to, also shows great interest in all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, The pride she shows in her family is enormous and as it continues to grow her Christmas card list gets bigger and with friends her overall card list is in excess of a hundred.

Colin & Graham
